8GB or 16GB Memory on Macbook Pro w/ Retina?

I'm about to retire my 17" Dell laptop from 2007 and upgrade to the new 15" Macbook Pro w/ Retina.  Woo-hoo!
So here's the million dollar question...is it worth it to pay the 200 bucks to upgrade the memory from 8GB to 16GB?  I've read that Apple now solders the memory into the computer, so once I pick my memory, I'm stuck.
It's been awhile since I've used a Mac on a day-to-day basis, so I'm fairly unfamiliar with how much memory newer systems eat up.  On an average day, I expect that I won't be doing much more than my e-mail on Outlook, surfing the web in Firefox, and doing some work in Word/Excel.  For that I figure 8 GB will be more than enough.  However, on rare occassions, I might need to fire up Photoshop to do touchups on photos or maybe even a little bit of light editing in Final Cut.
So what do you think?  Will 8GB do the trick, or should I suck it up and pay the extra 2 bills to bump it up to 16?

Pay the extra $$$ to get the max RAM your mb supports.
If you're keeping it for long term, then having the extra RAM would be beneficial to you since it's not user upgradeable.
You're coming from a Dell Laptop.  Rule of thumb when using windows, the more RAM, the better your computer will run.
Since applications gets more robust when they release a newer version, they tend to be more RAM hungry.
I remember when photoshop was happy with 4GB of RAM.  Now they're happier with 8GB of RAM.
It's better ot have it for " Just in case purposes ".
My .02 cents.

Hey guys. I'm going to buy a macboock pro for the first time and I have 1500/1600€ to spend. I will need to use programs such as illustrator, photoshop, after effects, premier or final cut pro and 3d programs like blender (3d modelling and animation). I don't know wich of this two macs to pick (the price is the same for both, at least here in Portugal), so help me here.
    Apple MacBook Pro 13'' i7-2,9GHz | 8GB | 750GB (MD102) vs Apple MacBook Pro 13'' Retina i5-2,4GHz | 8GB | SSD 256GB (ME865)

If nor money, nor space are a constraint, I would go for the Retina model with the i7 processor and the largest available SSD. And 16Gb of RAM, of course...
I would never consider a computer with an i5 processor and just 256 GB of storage!
And the Retina machines cannot be upgraded later, so better to order it at full specs...
So, as the package is now fixed (Retina, i7, 16 GB RAM, 1Tb SSD), the only choice now is between a 13" or 15" model.
If, as you said, space is not a problem, then go for the 15".... If you prefer the 13" screen, you will get the most powerful 13-inch machine available...
In both cases you wll get the maximum currently possible.... That is the only sensible choice when money is not a constraint...

  • 8gb versus 16gb RAM in Macbook Pro

Using a Quad core Macbook Pro in 64bit mode and wondering if its worth putting 16gb of ram in this machine? Will Logic performance be lightyears beyond 8gb?
    Anyone tried this?

    Hi
Yep, Apple's tech info may state that 8G is the maximum, but...they often do not update the info to reflect the 'true situation':

For example, Apple say the max RAM for my MacBookPro is 4g, yet (as long as I run OSX.6.3 or higher), it works fine with 8G in it.

  • IMac or MacBook Pro with retina?

I am having a crisis. I purchased both an iMac (2.7GHz/1TB/8GB) and a base 13" MacBook Pro with retina display. I purchased both with the intention of weighing out which one is best for me and returning the other. Both have great things about them in my eyes. I adore the big, bright screen of the iMac, along with the extra storage space and extra RAM (should I ever need it). I love the clarity of the retina display on the MacBook Pro, along with the portability and great battery life. I own an iPad, which will suffice for 85% of my mobile computing needs. On top of all of it, the iMac is going to be about $200 more expensive because of the sale I got on the MacBook Pro. Any and all recommendations will be greatly appreciated! Thanks for your time!

How important are the other 15% of your mobile computing needs?  The main point of decision is generally need for portability or what you use it for (for example, a professional photographer or graphic designer would prefer the larger screen of the iMac), someone who uses a computer for casual use can easily use the base model MacBook Pro.

  • Macbook pro 2014 retina 13 inch memory upgrade to 16gb which memory do i need to buy?

I have bought resently a macbook pro 13inch retina. i went for 8gb ram and do CAD and 3d aplications. need to upgrade to 16gb ram. i do not find anywhere not even on apple store, where you can buy RAM but not still for new model. so question, anybody knows which memory i need? clearly 2x8GB moduls but which type DDR3? etc
    Greatful for any help
    Saludations Nicky

That MacBook Pro is perfect for you, and I don't think that you need a 15-inch MacBook Pro, even if it's more powerful than the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display. There are some important differences between the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display and the 15-inch MacBook Pro, like the graphic card or the processor, but if that MacBook works properly, continue using it

i have the macbook pro 13" retina display. Can I upgrade my 8gb ram to 16gb? my processor is 2.5Ghz intel core i5

To save space on the computer, Apple has decided to solder the memory onto the logic board on the MacBook Pro with Retina display and the MacBook Air, and that's why you can't add more memory after buying the Mac. This only applies to these computers, not for the other ones

    thank you.

A Mid 2010 MacBook Pro supports 16 GB of memory without any problem. Macs are "special" about memory because some brands work without any problem and others don't work. That's why I recommend you to buy the memory from OWC or Crucial in order to make sure that you get compatible memory > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_MacBook_MacBook_Pro/Upgrade/DDR3

  • 13" MacBook Pro with Retina 256gb SSD and 16gb ram?

So I have decided to go with a 13" MacBook Pro with Retina.
I am now deciding on how to customize it...
    My uses are:
Primary -> Writing. I am an aspiring writer/ future published author, and this unit will serve as a primary storage unit for on-the-go writing. The SSD will help in this capacity, tremendously, as well as battery life, as inspiration to write can happen anywhere. I found he typability to be easier on the MacBook Pro as well, rather than the Air.
    Secondary -> Music, videos, gaming.
Basically, I am aware that the crispness of the rPro is apparent. I am not worried so much by the music, or videos, or even browsing part, as I'm sure its quite speedy.
What I am thinking is the might of the 4gb ram, 128gb SSD storage.
Would it be more worthwhile, since I plan to use this for 5+ years, to go for the little bit extra and get the 8gb ram, 256gb SSD storage unit, for only $200 extra. This seems a minor fee considering the length at which I plan to use and keep this.
That being said, I still play some older games and whatnot, with the possibility of playing World of Warcraft in the future... That being said, and knowing that Macs are not gaming powerhouses (unless you wish to go 15"+), would it be worthwhile to splurge another $200 for the 16GB ram? What major differences would doubling the 8 to 16 do for me and the performance of this MacBook?
    Thanks in advance!
    Nick

Since it is not possible to upgrade the RAM after purchase (it is soldered to the logicboard), I would definitely opt for 8GB. The same goes for the SSD- I would opt for double the storage. Though it is possible to upgrade your drive in the future, it comes at the cost of installing it yourself and potentially voiding any Apple warranty.
It would not be worthwhile to spend another 200$ on 16gb of RAM, IMO for your purposes. The lack of a discrete GPU and a duel core processor is what will limit gaming performance. 8GB of RAM is enough, in itself.
Rather than spending an additional $400 dollars, either spend the extra $200 for the 8gb 256GB model, or consider the 15'' entry level model for $700 extra dollars-which would be plently powerful enough for your purposes.

  • I have a macbook pro 15" Retina Display with 2.6 ghz and 8gb of ram yet when i try to download a HD movie from itunes it says my computer doesn't support HD?

i have a macbook pro 15" retina Display with 2.6 ghz and 8gb of ram when i try to download an HD movie from itunes it says my computer doesn't support HD? i went to the support on the apple website and looked at the specs that a computer has to meet in order to play HD movies and mine is well above them. Why can't i play the movies?

That would at least partially explain it.
These MacBook Pros drew more power than the power brick could readily supply, and so would only run at top speed when the power brick was supplemented by the battery.
Though the applicable tech note has been removed, it stated:
"If the battery is removed from a MacBook or MacBook Pro, the computer will automatically reduce the processor speed. This prevents the computer from shutting down if it demands more power than the A/C adapter alone can provide."
