8GB RAM and Oracle 9i RC2 SLES8-64

We have a Server with AMD64 and 8GB RAM running with the combination of Suse Enterprise-Server 8 and Oracle 9i RC2.
Is it possible to let the Database work with 6GB or more?
Is the Version 9i RC2 a 32bit or 64bit Database?

I am going to buy either a Mac Air or Mac Pro Retina 8GB RAM and 256GB. And as I have to still run Windows programs I will install Parallels 9. As the Mac are both 64bit machines does that mean I need to install Windows 7 64bit or just install 32 bit? (Going with Win7 as I hate Win8). And I will install Office Pro 2013 64 bit too or 32 bit or is that automatically selected by the underlying OS (I use Word, Excel and Access mainly for a membership database of a local club) ? I am not a power user so would appreciate advice on way to go

Again thank you.  If I only use word, excel and access in the Win environment and Mac OS for email and safari for internet do I need anti virus software . Ie my connection to the world is mac only and I use office pro only to ruin the club, newsletters, membership database etc. and of course anything I do there can drag/drop to the mac environ to email.  That's my understanding anyway.  Next will my existing .pst file copy directly into mac mail or do I have to runs translator  as I recall reading something about that ages ago when I started thinking Mac

I have a 2009 Macbook Pro with 1T hdd 8GB Ram and ran Maverick without problem...Yosemite installation has me completely frozen, nothing works but the spinning ball...I had to force shutdown last night, and haven't turned it on again...what do you advise?  During installation emptied cache, etc. Backed up using time machine, fortunately.

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

i recently received a mac book air 11 inch for christmas ... i beliehve it was bought in the states from my father i was unaware of the specs until i opened and read it... and i was wondering if i can still do the upgrade to 8gb ram and bigger flash drive.. is this possible and for how much? its only a week old.

Your 14 days are up, however you could take your case to Apple Inc. regarding same,
    however those are the stipulations.
RAM cannot be upgraded however, period, its permanent on the logic board after mfg.
As for the SSD (solid state drive), upgrading same is a bad premise 9 times out of 10.
No notebooks is a mass storage device, and you need an external HD for data redundancy and backups regardless.
data that is static on your SSD and not used very often has no logical reason to be ON the notebooks, and best saved on a superslim external HD ($60)
SSD are very expensive, even a small one,  HD are cheap as dirt and users are recommended to have one regardless for many good reasons.

  • Upgraded to 2x 8gb ram and registered 12gb only on my envy ultrbook 4

Just change the old 4gb ram with 2x of 8gb ram and only 12 gb ram registered.

    Manual says this:
Supports up to 16384-GB of system RAM

It is likely an issue of compatibility. Please provide whatever identification by part number that is on the old modules and the new ones and we can try to track it down.

  • 2.8ghz intel core 2 duo w/8gb ram and 240gb ssd

I have run across a lot of topics regarding upgrading your MBP late 2008 edition to 8gb of ram and that it is not possible. (only supports 6gb)
just wanted to let you all know that i just installed a brand new ssd, fresh install of 10.6, backuped my data, then installed 8gb of ram successfully...no hitches.
    thanks.

I have the same MacBookPro3,1 OS X seems to handle 8GB but with undefinable glitches. Windows does not know how to handle over 6. I even tried Windows 7 x64 with SP1 Integrated. The installer seems to work but takes literally 10 hrs and does not complete. With 6GB everything is fine on the windows side and it installs in 30 minutes. Also with 6GB OS X side is rock solid stable.
Personally, I opted for a Seagate Momentus XT 500GB for the HD with 4GB SSD buffer. After the Momentus XT I tried an Intel 320 Series SSDSA2CW120G310 2.5" 120GB SATA but there didn't seem to be any noticable speed difference between the SSD and the Momentus XT. Some reading revealed that this was because Apple designed the MacBookPro3,1 with a negotiated link speed at SATA 1 speeds to accomidate the ide DVD drive. The ICH9 chipset supports SATA II, but SMC firmware limits it to SATA 1 on the MacbookPro3,1s. I tried operating the macbook without the dvd drive to see if it would negotiate at higher SATA 2 speeds, but no go.
BTW - If you swap out the top case/trackpad with one from a MacbookPro4,1 you get all the multitouch gestures.

  • Energy usage (watt) of MacBook Pro 2010 with 8GB Ram and i7

I think of buying a MacBook Pro with 8GB, i7
(and SSD, but that's not important because it consumes less than HDD)
What is the energy consumption (in Watt) in idle state with display on under
    1) OSX
    2) Win7 (I need this for my job)

Well, I need a computer professionally. At least now.
But I want to keep my environments impact at a minimum.
So I need precise data to evaluate what I do:
money is one thing, because it's usually very finite,
but even more important is recyclability, energy, ...:
    10 Watts difference (e.g. for 8GB instead of 4GB?)
will yield, over mac lifetime of say 10 years (the laptop
im am currently typing on is 8+ years old, but is slowly
going towards being obsolete, even with ISA SSD upgrade):
    10 h/d * 365 d/y * 10 W * 10 y = 365000 Wh = 365kWh.
I try to save energy, so this is approx my direct energy usage
of 1 year (I have no car, do not fly, have no refrigerator,
do not heat my appartement above 10 deg Celcius, ...
    but strangely I have a computer and I am a programmer ...).
For me, it's important. It is relevant for my decisions:
    5 Watts? I will be tempted by 8GB. 10 Watts? I don't know.
(I do setup work, so I use VMs a lot, so I need quite some
    memory for that ...).

If it were me, I'd save the $60 and get the 2.3GHz one.  Its only 4% slower in the specs and will be hardly noticeable  in use.  The only advantage to the newer one is the Haswell processor which might (note that it is only a might) give a little better battery life with a trade-off of 15% in raw performance.

  • Is the 13 inch powerful enough to run CAD and simulation software with 8gb ram and i5

Or would you need upgraded specs?

I got the 15" rMBP instead.
Call the local Apple Store and ask if you can test your software on their computers. I was allowed to do that. I did and that is how I decided.

  • Should I keep my MacBook Pro or exchange it for more Ram and SSD space?

    Hello,
I decided to purchase a MacBook Pro 15 inch with Retina display. I thought I would just bite the bullet and get it with the upgraded 16gb Ram and 512 SSD as I want this computer to last me at least 5 years. I don't know exactly what I will be using it for but potentially I will be running a small business with it as well as using it for photos, some videos and all the other things we all use everyday. This brought the total price tag up to about $2900 before tax. Way more than I wanted to spend, but again, I plan on this being my last computer purchase for at least 5 years...and this would be my only computer...not a secondary one but the primary one.
As I was asking the guy in Best Buy about any sales or discounts, he mentioned a MacBook Pro with retina display that was just retuned to the store by a lady that decided to go with a MacBook Air instead.  It had been opened but not used and was in perfect condition. The sales manager said he could sell that one to me for $470 off the normal price. The problem was, it was the base model and only had 8gb Ram and 256gb SSD storage. So, I had the option of buying the computer I wanted...that I know would last me for years and years, for $2,900 OR buy the base model for $1,729. What would you do?
I decided to buy the base model as it was just to good a deal to pass up. Now, 2 days later, I don't know if I made the right decision. I know that 256gb of memory is not going to last me very long...especially considering how much more space modern software takes up nowadays...and its only getting worse. My solution is to just buy an external hard drive and store everything I don't immediately need on it. But I don't know if I'm being realistic as maybe it will be a major pain to constantly have to carry around an extra storage device. Then again, even if I had the 512 SSD model MacBook, I would still eventually run out of space and need an external drive. Has anyone else relied on an external device for their daily computing needs? Is it a major nuisance or easy to get by with?
My bigger concern is that it only has 8gb of Ram and can NOT be upgraded in the future. 8gb ram is fine right now, especially with the flash drive and i7 quad core processor, but in a couple years, I'm afraid  it won't be enough and that ill be forced to purchase another computer. The sales manager said that because its a Mac and because of the "monster processor" that the 8gb of Ram will be more than enough for years to come. According to him, Macs require less Ram than PC's due to their operating system being much more efficient. (This is my first Mac so I'm a bit unfamiliar)
So this is my dellima, should I return the base model and buy the one I originally wanted or should I make do with the base model and be thankful for the great deal I was able to get?
Will the 8gb of Ram be enough in a few years? I realize that depends on what I'm using the computer for but, since I'm not sure what my needs will be in the next year, lets assume I'll be using it to run a small business as well as the typical storage of pictures and home videos, etc.
Bottom line, will the 8gb of ram be enough to prevent the need to buy another computer for another 5 years or so or do I need to suck it up, return the base model, pay the extra $1,100 and get the 16gb of ram I originally wanted?
Sorry for the long story, I just need some solid advice as money is tight and I want to make the right decision. I'd rather pay $1,100 extra now and not need to buy a new computer for 5-6 years than save the money now but have to buy a whole new computer in 1-2 years.  If however, the 8gb ram will still make for a solid computer in a few years, I will gladly save the money.
Thanks in advance for your help. ;-)

    Generally (and in my opinion):
    1) do not buy any computer you cannot replace the hard drive and the RAM in.
    2) do NOT (EVER, EVER, EVER) purchase RAM or expended hard drive from any vendor (like Apple, Dell, etc).  they mark up the RAM
purchase the lowest machine that will work for you and upgrade the RAM and hard drive down the road.    Just look at the price Apple charges for the upgrade from 4GB to 8 GB:
Apple is charging the (4GB RAM + $100) for the 8GB upgrade.  You can easily get 8GB for $100.  later you should be able to get 8GB for $60.
Same thing for the hard drives:
Applis charging the price of (500GB + $100) for the 750GB drive.  I just bought a 750GB notebook drive for $99
I, personally, would return the retina notebook for a MacBookPro that you can upgrade the hd and ram

  • Problems deploying Windows 7 x64 computers with more than 8GB RAM

    SCCM 2012 R2 CU1
    Windows 7 x64
We have a weird problem after upgrading from SP1 to R2 CU1. We have built a Windows 7 64 bit image with the latest updates (currently September 2014 updates). It deploys fine to all computers. But after some days – don’t know exactly – guess after 4-7 days
    - we start getting errors on computers with more than 8 GB of RAM. The errors just start out of the blue. We didn't change TS, image or driver package.
The error shows in 3 different ways – depending of the computer model.
    1) BSOD – STOP 0x000000F4. Disk error.
    2) Task Sequence error 0x87D00269 when installing the first Application in TS. The error seems to have something to do with Management Point not found.
    3) Task Sequence simply stops after installing CMclient. No errors - it simply stops.
For instance we get the BSOD on the Lenovo ThinkCentre M93p. But on the ThinkCentre M83 we get the TS error 0x87D00269. M93p and M83 uses the same driver package. They consequently  fail every time after the error has begun. If we reduce (remove physically)
the memory to max. 8GB of RAM, they successfully run the Task Sequence.  We get the above errors on both Lenovo and HP machines with more than 8GB.
I made a copy of the production TS and started testing. I created a new driver package for M93p/M83. It contains only the NIC drivers. Now M93p an M83 successfully finishes the TS. Adding sata or chipset or MEI/SOL drivers to the package I get the 0x87D00269
error on both m93p and M83. At least not the BSOD on the M93p ;-)
Tried setting  SMSTSMPListRequestTimeout to 180 in the TS. Also tried putting in a 5 minute break before installing the first Application in the TS. Also tried putting in SMSMP=mp1.mydomain in the installation properties for the CMclient. It is still
    the same problem.

Hopefully this is a bug in translating the errorcodes? Just to be sure I checked all the SCCM serviceaccounts and none of them have expired passwords.  And again why only on computers with more than 8GB RAM.
Anyone else had problems rolling computers with more than 8GB og RAM?
Why does this happens after a few days? To begin with, it runs just perfect and then starts failing on all machines with more than 8GB. Without a change in TS, image and driverpackage. We have seen this pattern for the last 3 month after
updating our image with the latest Windows Updates. It all started after updating from SP1 to R2 CU1.
Why does it only affect machines with more than 8GB RAM?
How to get rid of the 0x87D00269 error?
Seems to be somehow related to driver installation mechanism in SCCM in combination with Windows 7 64 bit, +8GB RAM and SCCM 2012 R2 CU1 or perhaps just R2.
Any help or hints would be appreciated!
    Thanks
    Anders

We have the same workaround, using a x64 boot image resolved all our issues with WinPE 5.0.
    Machines with >4GB of RAM
Lenovo ThinkPad T540p failed applying drivers with 80040005
    Black screen/white cursor issues intermittently
No updates from Microsoft, they are still looking through the logs, but we have updated our boot images and all is well now. Our case it still open with Microsoft, they are researching the logs.

  • MacBook Pro 13" Late 2011, 16GB RAM and Apple Premium Service Center

    Hello all,
My dad has a MacBook Pro 13" Late 2011, it came with a 4GB RAM. When he got Parallels and installed Windows 8, 4GB RAM were not enough to even deal with Safari so he had to buy 16GB RAM from Cruical. Today when he went to Apple Premium Service Center here in Qatar (51 East) they refused to install the x2 8GB RAM and only installed one of them. They kept warning my dad that installing the whole 16GB can cause issues with the MacBook Pro HDD and can make it go faulty. I wanted to ask if installing RAMs can pose the HDD life to any danger. Because my dad uses his Mac for work and wouldn't like to lose any of his files against small additional speed.
    Thanks.

its very easy to do, here are step by step instructions with photos

  • 2008 macbook shutting down with 8gb ram

i have a 2008 MacBook, A1278, running Mountain Lion, 10.8.2.  I am trying to upgrade to 8GB RAM, in order to run xcode properly and it is shutting down on me after 1-2 minutes of use. I do have the newest boot ROM version.  I just bought a new logic board for it.  The hard drive was taken out of another computer (MacBook Pro, 2007), with Mountain Lion already installed.  Could that be a problem?
When I remove the 8GB ram and put in the 4GB (which the 2007 Mac had), everything works fine.
I know Apple only supports 4GB but i've been reading that w/the latest firmware update, I should be able to use 8GB.
    Thank you!

Memory from your 2007 MacBook Pro probably operates at 667 MHz and is DDR2. The 2008 MacBook's bus operates at 1066 MHz and is DDR3. Memory from the 2007 MacBook Pro should not work at all in your MacBook.
I think your problem is incompatible memory but swapping hard disks from one computer to another could also cause problems. Fix the memory problem, but you should reinstall Mountain Lion, ensuring the hardware drivers it contains are correct for your MacBook. Boot OS X Recovery and install it.

  • Upgraded to 8GB RAM - Windows 7 64-Bit Not Using All of It

I just upgraded my 3.02GHz MacbookPro to 8GB RAM and in both Mac and Windows (64-Bit) it acknowledges that I have 8GB installed. However in Windows 7's task manager it shows:
    Total Physical Memory 8167MB
    Cached 4500MB
    Available 4557MB
    Free 91MB
and it shows I'm only using 3.51GB....Why only 91MB free? In Adobe Illustrator I am getting not enough RAM errors so it seems like Windows 7 is tapping out at the old 4GB ceiling. Anyone know if this is a setting that is easily modified so I can use all 8GB?
    Thanks!

  • 2014 retina 13" 8GB RAM enough?

This is a crystal ball question.
My wife just bought a 13" 2.4 GHz MacBook Pro retina with 256GB drive, 8GB RAM.  So the 2 week return clock is ticking.
This is one of the newer models where nothing can be upgraded.  After recommending going with more than the 128GB drive base model and getting the 256GB drive I was next concerned about RAM.  Now I am the owner of a 12 year old Mac so I have a slightly different take from your standard Apple Store salesperson who have a hard time conceiving keeping a computer more than 5 years or so.  Not that I feel modern computers are built like the old ones and that you'll see as many 12 year old models 12 years from now anyway.  Anyway, the one running in the Apple Store had the standard 8GB RAM and was only running a few basic applications but was already using 4 GB RAM (I checked Activity Monitor).  I mentioned this to the sales person and he said Apple had just increased the base RAM in new MBP models to 8GB in response to this.  He regarded having 8 GB was plenty for future use unless you're a power user and running FCP and Photoshop and lots of other things (maybe me but not my wife).
Apple seems to have been more tempered in its RAM requirements than in days of yore.  Still I seem to frequently use my 1.5 GB RAM on my G4 to its max. vs. the 256 MB RAM minimum recommended with the original Tiger OS install.  Mavericks tech. specs state 2GB RAM but it, along with a few modest applications open, jumped to realistically needing 4GB which doesn't strike me as much leeway for OSX 13 days.
My basic question is given that you can no longer upgrade new Mac hardware to adapt to new system and software requirements as you go along, is 8GB RAM really enough if you plan on keeping a computer out to Apple's nominal 5-7 year use expectancy?  My wife is the user and probably the biggest demand will be very occasional iMovie editing.
Unfortunately it's either 8GB or 16GB with a fairly notable price difference.
One consideration: Flash drives are faster than old ones.  When computers run out of RAM they may start using drive space.  On old computers this slowed things down because disk drives are slow.  On new computers maybe this isn't so much a problem because you're using chip memory for drive as well as RAM?

Boy, I am terrible at keeping track of old questions.  They aren't right in front of you like they used to be with the old forum software.
How long?  Well, at least the 4-7 years mentioned above.  Basically until it dies or can no longer be used on the Internet.  Lack of modern browser is what made me mothball my G3 back in 2006 but my 2001 G4 with Tiger is still viable thanks to TenFourFox.  My wife's use is less demanding than me except she doesn't have patience for workarounds sometimes needed with old machines.  Still, she doesn't play the game of chase-the-Apple when the latest and greatest is announced.
We stuck with what we bought.  She really isn't a power user.  Mostly Mail and browsing Internet one tab at a time. It's probably unrealistic but we may just try and stick with Mavericks for the life of the machine.  I still use 10.4.11 10 years on my G4 after it came out so it isn't impossible if you don't absolutely require the newest from Apple all the time.  No virtual machine (now if it were my computer...).  Maybe I'm old school but generally computers are happiest running their original OS or at most one or two upgrades later.  I don't see us constantly trying to keep up with Apple in its mad game of chase the upgrade.
