8GB RAM upgrade fails on Macbook Pro even though RAM is ok

I've bought two 4GB RAM sticks for my Macbook Pro (2.4 Intel i5 running 10.6.7) and they failed the Hardware Memory Test. I tested them individually and they passed and I retested my original RAM and it passed. I sent the RAM back and got replacements and the same thing happened. Both sticks in fail... put them in individually, they pass. Has anyone else experienced anything similar?

Do you see much performance improvement after the upgrade?
Hi t,
Although that question was asked in reply to my post, I suspect you're asking Paulos42 . . . .
One way to get an idea whether more RAM will help or not, is to check Page outs and Swap used. First, use your Mac as you normally would, the longer the better (checking this right after starting up isn’t likely to show you anything). After you’ve used your Mac for awhile (again, the longer the better), go to Applications > Utilities > open Activity Monitor > in the top menu at right, select All Processes in the drop down menu > near the bottom of the window click on System Memory. If Page outs is more that about 10% of Page ins, and/or Swap used is large, chances are good that adding RAM will help. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1342

  • Issues with sleep/wake feature after 16GB RAM upgrade in my MacBook Pro. Any thoughts?

Just installed a 16GB RAM upgrade in my MacBook Pro and now it doesn't wake up on it's own when I open the lid. I have to press the power button. It works fine with a smaller RAM upgrade.
I've tried putting in just one of the 8GB modules and the sleep/wake feature works as normal so there isn't a problem with the RAM modules that I've bought (Crucial.com). I've also put in a combination of Apple's original RAM and the new ones to make 10GB (8GB + 2GB), and the sleep/wake feature works on that too. Put both 8GB modules back in and the MacBook doesn't wake up when I open the lid, I have to press the power button to wake it up. The MacBook itself works fine, super fast and the memory is recognised on 'About This Mac', the sleep/wake issue is the only problem I'm having with the 16GB RAM.
Any thoughts on this? Has anybody else had this sleep/wake issue like this when upgrading RAM?

I upgraded my early 2011 MBP to 16 gigs with Crucial. My machine would not sleep properly, because when I tried to wake it, it would wake from its hibernate image file. This is the issue I've seen here in this list.
I tried all the suggestions I saw on these groups. Nothing helped. I contacted Crucial, who suggested that if their RAM was defective, they'd replace it per their warranty process. I needed some proof it was their RAM causing the problem.
I put the original 8 gigs RAM back in the machine (2 4 gig sticks), and it behaved normally. I then put one stick of Crucial RAM in, all by itself. The machine behaved normally. I put the other stick of Crucial RAM back in, and took the first one out. The machine would not properly sleep and wake from sleep. This proved that one stick was causing the problem, and the other was not.
    Defective RAM!
I then requested and received an RMA from Crucial to send the defective RAM back. They paid shipping. I got new sticks of RAM about a week later. These new sticks of RAM work properly. No sleep issues.
I'm surprised and disappointed to say that this is not the first time I've received defective RAM from Crucial. I've purchased from them for years, and had GREAT service and received high quality products. The past couple years my experience has been different.
I'm still pretty steamed about this, as I spent a great deal of time trying to diagnose the problem and fix it. I don't really have that kind of time to waste. My expectation was that their RAM was high quality, and unlikely to be at fault.
Perhaps this is just a bad batch of RAM. I get that. I can forgive them once. But this has happened twice in the past three years. I'll look elsewhere for my next memory purchase.
Keep in mind that their customer ratings are generally very high. My experience is probably  isolated.

  • CanoScan 9000F scanner won't work on my MacBook Pro even though it should be compatible with the Mac 10.7.2 OS.

My new CanoScan 900F scanner won't work on my MacBook Pro even though I've followed all instructions to make it compatible with the 10.7.2 OS. The USB connection isn't recognised. What else con I do?

I have a similar problem with a new CanoScan 9000F which I tried to use without any success on my desktop computer (Mac Pro 5,1) and laptop (Macbook Pro 1,2) both running OS 10.6. Problem is identical on both, viz:
        •    Scanning process appears to start, a message comes on the screen: Scanning do not open document cover followed by Scanning...
        •    This is then replaced by the message: Cannot communicate with scanner. Cable may be disconnected or scanner may be turned off. Check status. Scanner driver will be closed. 2.155.33
I've spent several hours on the phone with Canon support but having uninstalled/installed/reinstalled/updated/turned on/turned off/unplugged/plugged/restarted innumerable times, the problem is exactly the same. The scanner icon shows up in the Printer & Fax System Prefs (though without the little status lights) and shows as being connected in the USB tree. I think it's a problem with the scanner, Canon bods are suggesting the Macs are at fault and suggest I try connecting to a wintel (hawk, spit) and it's 100km to the nearest Canon service centre.
Any suggestions as to what might be the problem/s and what I might be able to do to fix it/them?
    Thanks.
By the way, bought the Canon to replace a HP Scanjet 8300 which I've used for 6 years almost without problems. Any that I have had have been fixed merely by turning the scanner off then on after a 10 second rest.

  • What is the limit with RAM upgrading on a Macbook pro (mid 2011)

I'm looking for a suitable upgrade for my ram, but I don't know if there are models that are incompatible with my Macbook Pro model.
    I have a 13 Macbook Pro 2.7Ghz from mid 2011.
I have a couple of possible RAM models to purchase such as:
    Corsair SO-Dimm 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-15000,1866MHz
    Kingston 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Are there any limitations regarding the speed I can install on my machine?

Max 16GB's of 1333MHz DDR3 SO-DIMM PC10600 204 Pin is the correct RAM for your computer.

  • RAM upgrade on my Macbook Pro

    I have the following:
    Macbook Pro 15" version 8.2 (early 2011)
    Currently running 2 x 2Gb 1333MHz DDR3 RAM
    2.2 GHz Intel Core i7
    OSX 10.9.1
I edit photos on this laptop, and my software is very RAM hungry. It's slowing my Mac down very much. I want to upgrade the RAM, but am not sure how much I can increase by. I wanted to ideally increase the RAM to 2 x 8Gb cards. Could someone please tell me what the maximum amount is that i can increase my RAM?
    Thank you in advance.

You can upgrade to 16GB of RAM.
Around here, we tend to recommend Crucial or OWC RAM. It's guaranteed to work with Macs whereas some other RAM doesn't meet the stringent specifications for Mac RAM.
Visit the Crucial website and click on the System Scanner tab. You can download a small app which you can unzip and run. It will report your system specs back to Crucial and you'll be presented with the upgrades available for your machine.
    Good luck,

  • RAM Upgrade for 17" MacBook Pro (2.4 GHz, Core 2 Duo)

  • RAM upgrade for 2010 Macbook Pro

I have the 13" Macbook Pro 2010 unibody model which I bought in May 2010.  It has 4GB RAM installed when I bought it.  I purchased two (4GB) RAM DDR3 204pin 1333Mhz.  Will this be compatible?  I want to upgrage the RAM to 8GB.

Hey boss I checked MacTracker and for the Early 2010 13" MBP (your model) it showed these specs:
    2.0 or 4.0 GB PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMMs
    Max RAM 8.0 GB
For the late 2010 13" MBP it showed these specs:
    2.0 or 4.0 GB PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMMs
    Max RAM 4.0 GB
To answer your question no you cannot install that memory you mentioned.  It could cause damage to both the memory and to your macbook pro.
Download MacTracker it is a free app that shows specs for almost every Apple device made.
I hope this has helped you.

  • Airplay mirror imaging icon will not show up on my macbook pro even though i downloaded mountain lion. How do i get airplay icon to appear on my macbook pro?

i have a macbook pro (almost positive that its a 2010 version) and i got mountain lion. The BIGGEST AND MAIN REASON i bought mountain lion was so that i can do airplay, allowing me to mirror image what is on my mac to my Apple TV. my whole computer is updated as far as the displays and newer features but the small airplay icon will not show up on the top of my screen. therefore, not allowing me to mirror image what is on my mac to my tv... it is connected to the same wifi as my apple tv. idk what to do. could it be because my macbook pro is a 2010? desprately looking for help...please help me with this issue
    thank you

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Read > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5404 AirPlay Mirroring requires an Early 2011 or newer MacBook Pro, so your MacBook Pro isn't supported.
To mirror your MacBook Pro's display onto the Apple TV, you can use an application like Beamer or AirParrot even if AirPlay Mirroring isn't compatible

  • Why does Lexmark Printer Software Update v2.7 keep showing up as an update on my MacBook Pro, even though it's installed?

I use a Lexmark Pro901 & Pro915.  One printer I use at work and the other at home.  I've connected the printer cable to my MacBook Pro and both printers during the update and nothing changes.

Your post is incredibly hard to read, font is way to small.
If you used Boot Camp Assistant to create a partition to install Windows to you need a REAL Windows 7 or 8 install media and license key and you have to actually install Windows on your Mac. Boot camp is only for creating a partition to install Windows and starting the Windows install from REAL Windows install media.
That Windows install media has to be a DVD disc, if your Mac has a built in DVD drive (Apple does not allow Windows to be install any other way on Mac computers that originally come with a built in DVD drive), or from a USB stick with the actual Windows install files on it (Not an ISO of the Windows install files).
So the question is did you install Windows on your Mac? It doesn't look like it from the Option key boot and the list of available Boot Devices you posted.

  • Is a 16gig/RAM upgrade possible 13" MACBOOK PRO 2.9ghz if so is it worth it or am I better off with a 15" MBP?

Forgive me for trolling on this topic but I wanted to be a bit more specific and get properly eductated before I make a final decision.  I had a 17" and I f@cking hate it because of it's size.
I have been a mac guy for a few years but up until now I relyed on my tech/junior assistant to deal with all the tech stuff.  He has now gone and on his own leaving me to get all techy again.
A little about me and what I will use the laptop for.
I am a photographer/film maker. I run CS6 very often sometimes daily.  I usually have multiple picuture files open with multiple layers.  Some images can range to a size of 600mb+.  I shoot with cameras with no less than 18 megapxls.  On top of that I may also have FINAL CUT PRO and working on short films.  I generally have the habit of jumping back and forth between the two, plus get distracted with the web and stream videos. and the od video game (but not so much).
I keep reading that 16 gigs of ram is a possible upgrade on a 13" macbook.  Is it possible?  And if so, what sort of performance boost can I expect (in comparison to the 15" MBP?  Also, if so are there any glitches that may damage the computer?
    1.  I travel quite a bit I really prefer the portability of the 13" MBP and want to avoid having to buy te 15" MBP
    2.  I am attempting to be cost effective (which may be a futile attempt)
    All answers are welcome.
Thanks for your time and have a fine day Ladies and Gents.
    Cheers

Thanks mate but it doesnt, answer the question about performance.
In terms of screen real estate, I don't care much for it as I usually work relatively close to the pixel sizes and I generally work in very dum conditions so the antiglare is something I also dont care for.  If mac offered a Matt finish screen again it would be a dream lol.
Retina though sweet is really just a gimmick, stare at one screen, starred at them all, so I'm fine with the regular MBP.
    And size does matter.

A Mid 2010 MacBook Pro supports 16 GB of memory without any problem. Macs are "special" about memory because some brands work without any problem and others don't work. That's why I recommend you to buy the memory from OWC or Crucial in order to make sure that you get compatible memory > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_MacBook_MacBook_Pro/Upgrade/DDR3
