8gb ram worth it for 32bit Vista?

hi-
I have huge files that are painfully slow to work with -ie 15,000 by 10,000 pixels, 1 - 1.5GB in size. I have the 32bit version of Vista, 4gb ram.
If I upgraded to 8gb ram, would it really be worth it? I know the faq says that PS can somehow utilize this extra ram, but would PS be "as snappy" as when it has enough ram in the first place? If actions that take 15 minutes with these files would only take as long as the ones with my 600MB files, then I would do probably it. Do u think this would this be a major performance upgrade or just a tiny one?
your thoughts greatly appreciated!

Go with x64 vista first then try the file again ( in a 64 bit environment you can set PS to use just over 3gb ) then if you need more RAM then get 8GB.
But, like Freeagent said, x64 bit is the only way you will be able to use 8gb.
I work with massive files ( 45000 x 12000 pixels @250ppi ) and I need 16gb to keep things in check.....with vista ( search index, prefetch/superfetch etc disabled), photoshop and the image loaded, Vista will take up 12-14gb of RAM.
So the more ram the better IMO.
You will see improvements in performance with 8gb in PS. One thing I have noticed since upgrading to 16gb is that save times are dramatically faster - what would normally take 15 mins to save now takes between 2 to 5 mins.
Even with 16gb PS still goes to the scratch disk so a fast dedicated disk ( pref Raid 0 or 10k / 15k drive) is good advice.

  • 4gb to 8gb ram:  Big help for LR?

I am running LR 4.1 RC2 on my Win7 64-bit 17.3" laptop.  Here are the basic specs:
    i3-330M 2.26ghz, 4gb, 500gb hd, 17.3" 1600x900 screen, Intel graphics (with latest driver)
Fortunately, I have not had the terrible performance problems that some people report, but it is still somewhat sluggish.  Occasionally, even when I am not doing anything the ram usage will go from 450-550mb up to about 2gb for no apparent reason.  Also, the cpu usage will go up.  It only does this from time to time, but something is going on in the background.  Maybe some of the times it is building previews in the background, but that is just a guess.  Also, I discovered that any use of luminance NR really slows things down,.  Now I wait until the last step before exporting an image to do that so that it doesn't interfere while working on that image in the develop module.
My laptop works well and except for LR is fast enough.  I am wondering if going to 8gb would be the biggest bang for the buck change I could make for LR?  Often that is the case, but looking at the task manager I usually have quite a bit of memory available, although when LR is really busy like exporting an image to a resized jpeg file the memory of the PC can be up to 95% usage.  That drops down though when LR is done.  The raw files I am working with are from 16mp and 18mp cameras and I don't do batch processing, just one photo at a time.
This laptop is 2 years old, but still running fine so I would only get a newer one with a faster cpu and more ram if I really thought it would help quite a bit -- or this one develops problems.  Changing from 4gb to 8gb though is relatively inexpensive.  What are your thoughts?  Thank you.

I agree with your statement that 20 GB is probably ample for caching up to 40,000 raw files in LR4 and LR3.6 (see why below). Even using large 21Mp raw files that will hold up to 33,333 images before over-flow (20,000/0.6).
I know this is going off topic, but I'm sure it's of interest. I also thought that LR4.1 PV2012 stores different ACR cache information than LR3.6 PV2010. What is interesting is that the "file size" of LR3.6 PV2010 created ACR cache files are identical in size to LR4.1 P2012 created files. Below is a screen shot showing a purged cache snapshot for three (3) Canon 5D2 MKII 21Mp CR2 raw files processed first in LR3.6, and then in LR4.1 in the same order.
    Cache0000000001.dat = Picture 1 in LR3.6 (530KB)
    Cache0000000002.dat = Picture 2 in LR3.6 (608KB
    Cache0000000003.dat = Picture 3 in LR3.6 (590KB)
    Cache0000000004.dat = Picture 1 in LR4.1 (530KB)
    Cache0000000005.dat = Picture 2 in LR4.1 (608KB)
    Cache0000000006.dat = Picture 3 in LR4.1 (590KB)
What is more interesting is that the ACR cache .dat files are not being updated after making multiple changes to the images in LR3.6 and/or LR4.1 Develop module, only the 1 KB 'Index.dat' file is updated. I had always thought that changes made in the Develop module were updated in the ACR cache, but apparently that's not the case. I went back and hit 'Auto Tone' on each of the pictures, with no change even after zooming in to 100% on each picture. I also tried switching to the Library module and back to the Develop module, hitting 'Reset' on image, and repeating the same 100% viewing. You can see below that the 'Date Created' for the .dat image files is same as the 'Date Modified' (i.e. NOT modified), only the tiny 1KB 'Index.dat' is updated.

  • 8GB RAM - Worth it?

    Hi,
I have a MacBook Pro 13 as outlined below.
I will probably get a 500GB 7200rpm HDD upgrade soon and am looking to see if upgrading the RAM is worthwhile.
What I would get is the following -
    - http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?q=8GBSODIMM+DDR3+PC3+8500204-pin&hl=en&cid=9773633387901267768&sa=title#p
    8GB, 1066MHz, Crucial RAM.
Firstly, would it fit properly in my MacBook?
Secondly, using iMovie, Photoshop CS4 and everyday applications like iTunes, Safari, Word, would I see any increase in speed or productivity, or any differences at all?
    Thanks,
    Fred

Do a fresh restart of the computer and then run your photo editing apps and all the apps that you intend to run now. At the same time have Activity Monitor open and look at your "page outs". Forget the Page ins.
If you start getting a lot of Page outs then more RAM will speed you up. If you get few or zero Page outs then more RAM will do nothing for you.
The next question is how many Page outs are a lot. If after a good period of time as in an hour or so of constant photo editing or whatever you will be doing on the computer your page outs start to catch up with you page ins then you have way too many page outs. On the other hand, if you just gain page outs briefly and seldomly then you are fine as is.
The deal is this; whenever you are accumulating a page out the computer is spending time writing to disk that it would not have had to do at all if it had enough installed RAM. That is where your speed enhancement afforded by RAM would come from. You will have to be the judge of it because no body else does anything just like you do it in all likely hood. Then you can weigh the probability of speed increase against your expense for RAM and decide.
EDIT: When you have System Memory clicked in Activity Monitor, the green part of the pie chart is your free RAM. If it is large, adding more will do nothing but make that pie more green and at the expense of making your wallet less green.

  • Which 8GB RAM upgrade chips for 2011 Macbook Pro?

I purchased my 2011 MBP with 4GBs of RAM because it seemed to me that I could eventually upgrade to 8GB for under $100.  It's time to start shopping for the upgrade and I need your advice.  These modules from Corsair, for example, seem to be ideal:
Corsair 8 GB DDR3 Laptop Memory Kit CMSO8GX3M2A1333C9
There are also several other options from Crucial, Kingston, and G.Skill, all in the $80-$90 range.  I have the following question:
    1.  Which brand do you recommend?
    2.  Are there any compatibility issues with the brands I have mentioned?
    3.  Is it true that upgrading the RAM yourself doesn't void AppleCare warranty?
IMO, Corsair and Crucial make terrific RAM.  I have used them in my Win PCs for years and have had no issues.
Thanks in advance for your replies!

    I am getting these sticks
    KINGSTON HYPERX 8GB (2X4GB) DDR3 1600 NON-ECC CL9 SODIMM (KHX1600C9S3K2/8G)
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104253
for my MB Pro 2011 15".
Read good stuff about them. They run at 1600 MHz, which OSX should recognize, and i7 will support it too.
This Corsair ram would work too, though it's only 1333 MHz.
    http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-DDR3-Laptop-Memory-CMSO8GX3M2A1333C9/dp/B002YUF8ZG /ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
If you buy the Kingston, be sure to NOT buy the XMP model - (model number ends with 8GX) buy the model that ends wth 8G. XMP is an Intel Memory Profile thing, that you'll need access to BIOS to utilize. (you can't on your mac )
Kingston should be the fastest though, with lowest CAS latency (in short, faster memory access times)
    Enjoy

  • 8gb ram or 16gb for my CIS courses

I recently got used Mid 2012 13’ Non-Retina MacBook Pro in pristine condition. I have already upgraded the stock HDD to a Samsung 840 EVO 250GB SSD but I am hesitant to upgrade the RAM without some advice from those who have used the same programs I will be using.
My debate is between getting 8GB or 16GB for Adobe CS6 and other programs that will be included in my CIS degree (just starting off). Obviously 16GB would be better but it is also about double the cost. Will 8GB be enough or should I just bite the bullet and spend the cash?
I know I could scour the forums and maybe find an answer related but I’d rather have the question answered first hand from those who have been in the same position as me.
    OS X Yosemite Beta
    MacBook Pro (Non-Retina 13-inch, Mid 2012)
    2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
    4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    Samsung 840 EVO 250GB SSD

What I forgot to mention is that Macs are very selective regarding RAM.  Make certain that you install RAM withe proper specifications (204-pin PC3-12800 (1600 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM) and the best sources of Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.
    Ciao.

  • Will 8gb ram newly installed  for LP 8, crash a session  opened in LP 7

Hi, my LP 8 upgrade is en route, and I want to up my Ram capacity from 4.5 to 8gb to fully take advantage of LP 8's features. I've also read the posts and warnings against having more ram than LP 7 can deal with safely. My question is will I be able to open sessions in LP 7 made in LP 7 that were playing fine with 4.5gb ram, (ultimately as backups post LP 8 install) but in a system that now has 8 gb ram installed ? One never knows if you'd have to go back, and the word is LP 7 after upgrade can still run as usuall.

Here is what I suggest. An SSD is a must. If you want programs to pop open it is the only way. The one thing you do not tell us is your budget. I assume yiou realize that you have specced out at least a $1000 laptop. Maybe $2000. Look at the Probook 640 G1 with discrete Radeon HD 8750 GM graphics 1 gb.
    Configure your laptop
Include the SSD option and 8 gigs of RAM or even 16. You will not be disappointed.

  • Qosmio X300 14N - Nvidia Driver message: Driver are for 32bit Vista

    Hi,
I bought a Qosmio X300 14N with SLI 9800GTS. When i'm trying to install the last driver Nvidia Notebook 179.48 NOTEBOOK(recommanded on toshiba site)
I have the message that the driver i'm installing are for 32 bit version not for 64bit but i'm using a 32 Bit Vista version.
With the driver that i'm currently using i have some problems on framerate wich is completaly strange; Sometimes it will be very fast and sometime very slow.
It's very disapointed to have this type of problem with this type a computer. My last laptop computer was a Dell and i'm beginning to regret it.
Is there anybody that could have an idea on this problem ?

    Hello Gaudin,
I bought a Qosmio X300-157 and I've your same problems. When I try to update my Nvidia drivers, Vista doesn't allow me to finish the update because it say that my Windows version is not a 32 bit (while it is). I tryed several certified Nvidia drivers version from several sources but the result is always the same. I've also installed the new release of windows 7 (on a different partition) and when I update the driver I have the same problem again as in Vista. So I'm start to think that it's a Qosmio problem though it's unbelievable that a notebook like this payed more than 2000 euros can have this kind of problem.
I read that you solved the problem. Can you give me any suggestion? After the uninstalling of the driver how you can select the graphic card? Please help me because I'm going crazy!!!
    Thx in advance.
    Charly

  • Mac mini Late 2012 - 8 gb of ram worth it?

    Hello :)
Are 8 gigabytes of ram worth it for my my Mac mini?
I use it for Xcode and sometimes my Mac takes a bit too long for easy tasks.
    Or should I take 16 gb ?
    Thanks for answers

The Activity Monitor application can help you determine whether more memory would improve performance. If you often have memory pressure in the yellow or red zone, or if you often have more than a few MB of swap used, then you should consider adding memory.

  • Intel Core i5 or i7 and 4GB ram or 8GB ram for school usage and gaming Football Manager 2013

    Hi all,
I'm considering bying the new Macbook Air 13'' but i'm confused whether to go for the Intel Core i5 og i7 processor and with 4GB ram or 8GB ram? I will use it for school stuff, web browsing and for gaming Football Manager 2013. Which one should I go for?

i5 should be able to handle it, however as you know MBA isn't a gaming laptop. So you can't expect the best results. Will it run smoothly? Reading some of the reviews, it's not that terrible. However if you play football manager often I would upgrade to the i7. For occasional gaming, I would definitely stick with i5 because of better battery.
Tbh, I'm not much of a gamer. But I use Final Cut Pro, photoshop, and do other type of intense tasks.
I decided to go with the i5 for myself and spend the $150 on something else (like external drive, monitor).
Anyways to answer your question, it depends on how often you play. If you play 24/7 the upgrade will be worth it.
But for occasional gaming, again I would stick for better battery :)
(But external battery can be purchased vs you won't be able to upgrade to i7.... Just a random thought..)

  • Can't find drivers for ipod nano 8GB for windows vista HELP

I am trying to find the drivers for my ipod nano 8GB. I am running Windows Vista on my laptop. I have tried absolutely everything listed on this webpage and others. I have removed itunes and reinstalled it and still nothing. I downloaded usbstor.sys and usbstor.inf. I have gone into my computer and clicked on the ! next to my ipod in file manager and have gotten nowhere! This has been 5 days of frustration. I don't understand why apple would not just SUPPLY the software for the nano. I am beyond frustrated now. Can someone please help...

Something is going on with your Nano if Vista doesn't see it anymore. Did you use device manager and try to uninstall your Nano? Perhaps this will work. Once uninstalled, the next time you plug it in, Vista will see the Nano as a new device and install the proper USB drivers.
I'm not on my Vista computer right now...but here's an article to help you find device manager in Vista: http://kb.wisc.edu/page.php?id=5183
    Good luck!

  • Upgraded 2012 MACBOOK PRO 2.6Ghz 8GB RAM 750 GB an alternate for RETINA MBP 15 or NOT?How good is its potential, reliability ?

I am a student and an aspiring filmmaker.I am also into digital cinematography (Canon 550D) and now will be venturing into editing. I am in DIRE NEED of help
I have a few problems regarding the purchase of Macbook pro.I live in Kolkata(India).I have been waiting for the past 1 and a half years to buy a Mac but after the release of Retina Macbook pro 15.I am left confused. Its near unupgradability and unreparibility rumors, delayed delivery, and 1st generation hardware issues especially the lack of Optical drive made me reconsider my decision of buying one.
I want to know whether I can go for the top model of Non Retina - 2.6Ghz 8GB RAM 750 GB 1 GB Nvidea as an alternate choice for Retina MBP pro or NOT ?
1.I wanted to buy the Retina Base model. Though it is very recently launched and there is a big risk buying it because they say it is unrepairable and unfixable as 'everything is glued into the motherboard' dialogue scares me. Something goes wrong after purchase and they send it back to US, is what the Apple officials said. Moreover they don’t keep one on a demo at Apple stores in kolkata. I have searched almost everywhere and have been to many resellers in my city but no use.
NOW,I am very sceptical about custom ordering a Macbook 15 non retina with High-Res 1680X1050p from US.I don’t know how much custom duty or expenses I have to pay and is it safe or not. Time is also a factor. Sadly, I have to buy one in Kolkata (my city) it seems.
    2. I am opting for Macbook Pro 15,2.6 Ghz,8GB RAM. Buying it for the sole purpose of editing(audio, video, photos).I need something which is fast along with a good screen size. My original decision was to buy the 17inch but after the launch of Retina and the upgraded 15 inch, I am only looking forward to the upgraded models. Many say 13 inch is fast, but it features a dual core with a maximum of 2.9Ghz clockspeed. I on the other hand want a quad core i7 with good upgradability options and a good screen size. The 13 inch may be a favorite for many, but I want nothing less than a 15 inch. One good option I get with non Retina 15 is its upgradability, while many say Retina MBP 15 can be made upgradable in future but that time is yet to come and by the time the whole web becomes ‘retina friendly’ and all applications supporting its 2880X1800 resolution, I may end up waiting only. Yes the picture quality remains unbeatable when compared to Retina Pro and it will always be. Though friends, I am a student, I want something which is fast, can run almost anything and future dependable. Retina Mac book Pro in India is 2799 USD - Base model. I cannot pay that amount just for the screen. As far as speed is concerned, I plan to get an OWC SSD and a 16 GB OWC RAM in the future resulting in greater speed when comparing the configuration with Retina 15.That problem is solved.
My problem here is this: The web is filled with reviews and videos of Retina Macbook Pro and the upgraded Macbook Pro 15 is just no where, if you even find a few videos, they only feature unboxing videos of Macbook pro 15 (i7-2.3Ghz-4GB-500GB-500MB Nvidea).Other videos compare the 2.3ghz model with Retina 15 pro. They are not elaborate like the 15 Retina Pro reviews.
    1. I want to know about the real performance, potential, pros, cons of Macbook Pro 15 (i7 2.6Ghz 8GB RAM 750 GB 1GB Nvidea graphics).
So my question to you is what is your opinion on the 15 inch non retina ? HOW FAST do you think is the new upgraded 15inch non retina i7-2.6Ghz-8GB-750GB model really is ?I have read on many mac forums and seen on a particular youtube video that 15inch 2.3Ghz model takes an alarming 40 seconds to start because of traditional hard drive ! A normal DELL Inspiron starts at 15 secs max with i3+4 GB RAM and this particularly confuses me about the whole quad core processing and stuff and speed when running applications like C6,FCP,Lightroom etc is to be determined in regard to the model I want to buy.
    2. Is it necessary to buy APPLE CARE WARRANTY when buying a laptop from Apple. What are the benefits and how is it different form the normal customer care ?
    3. Please enlighten me on some nice headphones from Sennheizer under 90 USD.I am considering Sennheiser HD 439.I am not a bass freak and I want something to use for listening to voice, loud clear. In short, a headphone for all purpose. I heard the HD 449 is not that good compared to HD 439.They say it is Jazz oriented. Another confusion  !
Finally, If you know anyone who knows about this configuration (15inch 2.6 8GB RAM 750GB) and its performance than please help me out my friends. Any small detail, input, you feel like please let me know. Please help me be sure and satisfied am buying my Macbook Pro very soon and I am awaiting your response.

Well, are you talking about a 750 Hard Drive or SSD?  If SSD (quite expensive) it will certainly be as fast.  One option is to get the smallest HD they have and with the Non Retina you can upgrade the HD to an SSD later or now but save a little money.  Check with iFixit or OWC for instructions.  HD's do take longer to start up and load, but once open, the processor and video work just the same as on the Retina model.  The SSD speed is nice, but really not critical.  So you have to wait a minute for your computer to boot up.  The other big question is you need to find out if the non-retina model will take 16GB of ram.  According to OWC's site, it will, 16GB for 150USD.  Once you get programs open and resident in ram, everything will fly.

  • More detail and a reply for the CQ50 - 130US will not boot with 8gb ram post

The specs, on the web site say that the  max memory supported is 3GB DDR2 because the notebook was built with the OS Vista(32 bit) installed so that’s why the manual has the 3 GB max. memory supported limit. The 32 bit OS can’t address memory over 3.12 GB.   To my mind that is not a spec. but rather a tech. writer who made a mistake and copied the sales literature.  With Windows 7(64 bit) Pro. installed the OS can address up to192GB of memory if the system supports it.  Other Compaq and HP Notebooks can deal with 8GB of memory installed. That’s why I would think HP’s could easily fix this with a patch or use one of their other BIOS’s.
The difference between 4GB and 6GB is that with 6GB system runs faster and the display quality has improved.  I have set the cache size to large and the executive paging is set to off in the registry. The menu(System Properties - Performance Options – Advanced – Virtual Memory) is set to automatically manage the paging file size.

You should keep it in the original; thread you started.
