9.1 freezes if Vista UAC is on.

Running Vista SP2.  If User Account Contorl (UAC) is on, Reader 9.1 will open and disply the first page of ducument, then freezes and can only be closed via the task manager.   This happens both when running Reader as a stand-alone, or through Firefox or IE.  If I open Reader directly rather than by clickiing a file, it locks up right away.
The usual UAC warning does *not* appear. The reader opens fine and then locks up.
This also prevents 9.1 from being removed or updated while UAC is on.  It gets almost thru the process, then throws an error message (something about being unable to get something from V8) then stops.
This does not affect Reader v 8.  All works OK if UAC is turned off (but then I get that annoying reminder to check my security settings.)
Suggestins?

Turn UAC off and pray that Windows 7 fixes the problem.

  • Installation Freezes on Vista.

I've tried over 10 times to install the trial of photoshop cs3 on vista.
Ive disabled all programs on startup, switched to the classic view, and disabled the system restore. and the stupid installer keeps freezing at 8.46%
    please help me!!!!

    John,
Mine installed almost flawlessly on Vista. The only issue I had was that since I have a 64bit system, I had to tell it to install under "programs(x86)". If you are running 64 bit, that could be your issue.

I am having the same problem. The installer crashes when "Publishing product information". I can open iTunes even after the crash and it seems to be working fine, but I get the "install the 64-bit version" error when trying to connect my iPhone.
Sorry I don't have a solution for you, just wanted to let you know you're not alone.

With a minimal system, I would strongly recommend looking over the tips in this ARTICLE, which will help getting the very most from your computer, for an editing session.
There are several FAQ entries (accessed via the link to the right of the main forum screen), on optimizing Vista, one's computer, and also setup to help with video editing. I strongly recommend reading down those entries, as they are filled with great and useful tips.

  • Vista UAC - handle privileges elevation

    Hi guys,
I've been having some trouble with one of the application I have to maintain.
Some things that might be needed in order to understand my needs:
    - it is a java web start application
    - it embbeds a few Windows applications that we did not develop
    - it has to be able to run those embedded applictions. This requires elevation of privileges through a runtime.exec() call.
At the very first execution, since this is a java web start application, they will get the error saying "this operation couldn't be performed. you need to run this software as administrator".
Up until now, we tell our customers to "right click -> execute as administrator" on the application icon on the desktop, but I really don't like this.
I would prefer to ask for an elevation only for procedures needing those rights.
I know that one of the main issue is that the java VM is run with user privileges only, so any attempt to create a child process will end up with the very same privileges (leading to the error code 740 I always get for now when calling runtime.exec() ).
Is there a "sexy" way to implement privileges elevation programmatically in Java?
If not, is there a plan in the Java VM development to implement this kind of call? (please correct me if I'm wrong) Even though I realise this really is OS specific, it is impossible to do with the tools we have at hand currently. I also suppose that this UAC will have the same behaviour or a really close to the one in Vista in the coming Windows Seven.
Some things that would be pretty neat:
    - add the "Vista elevation needed flag" to the Manifest contained in a Jar file, as an OS specific parameter
    - add the "Vista elevation needed flag" to the JNLP file, as an OS specific parameter
Many thanks in advance for any help,
    Cheers
    Eric

Not quite sure how that helps?
The "manifest" in that isn't a java manifest. It requires a windows executable.
You can of course wrap a java app into a JNI C executable. Is that what you had in mind? That would work too. What I had in mind was the embedded Windows Applications the OP was referring to.
I did a test using jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe and it seems to worked.

  • LR 1.3.1 freezes with Vista x64

Forgive me if this has been covered. I searched, but could not find anything.
I just did a clean install of Vista 64 (moved from XP), and a clean install of LR 1.3.1.
LR is freezing any time I open a "choose folder" dialog box. Normally (on XP), LR would open the "choose folder" dialog, and let me browse around and select a folder (for save/open, etc). But on Vista x64 it completely freezes, and I have to kill the LR process.
An example of where this dialog is used:
When I launch LR, it asks me if I want to backup the library. From the backup dialog, I can "choose the location" of the backup. When I click to choose the location, the "choose folder" dialog box comes up. It does not show any contents within it (no directory structure is listed), and now LR is completely frozen - no way out.
Has anyone else seen this on Vista x64? Is this a known issue? Any ideas on how to fix this?
    Thanks,
    Mike

    A quick update...
Turns out that LR isn't frozen on the "choose folder" dialog box. It just sits for a long time, and then eventually displays the folders and everything works fine. The delay seems to be about 1-2 minutes, and then everything works.
And it doesn't happen every time I use that dialog box. But it seems to happen the first time I initiate that dialog from any particular module/function within LR (Export, Import, etc).

  • Itunes freeze on Vista 32Bit with Ipad2

    Hi All.
    I have the following:
    a. Ipad2 64GB wifi - 4.3
    b. Windows Vista 32 Bit Home Premium
    c. Toshiba laptop satellite with 4GB ram and 2+Ghz proc
    d. Itunes 10.2.1.1
It took me considerable time (6 hours +) to get Itunes to start running on my system - finally seeing 2 posts which I combined the solutions of, to get the Itunes working.
Now that it is working, I can sync my Ipod (non-touch) with Itunes - no problem there. However, using either the same cable, or the Ipad2 cable, and using any one of the 4 USB ports on the laptop, the Ipad2 does not get detected by my computer. In fact, I get an "autoplay" notification which clearly indicates that the cable is fine, the USB port is fine, and the Ipad & Itunes are fine.
So can someone please tell me what the problem is? This is the first time I am using the Ipad, never synced it before, except once by connecting it to a friends itunes to get it to start but pulling it out before it could sync.
I have tried the following solutions:
    a. Switched off wifi/ networks
    b. Reinstalled Itunes
    c. Restarted Ipad
    d. Restarted the laptop
    e. Tried logging in as a different user on the same laptop
    f. Tried using different cables
    g. Tried using other USB ports on the computer, and checked their power sufficiency (and since the Ipod works on them I am assuming they are fine)
    h. Used Vista updates
    i. Removed my antivirus software
    j. Shut down the windows firewall
    k. Removed the antimalware
    l. Removed my HTC sync software
I also ran diagnostics in Itunes just before it could freeze with ipad - it shows
    a. ipod support service is running, apple mobile device is running, USB ports verified.
    b. However, it shows that Itunes helper not running, and no ipod, iphone or ipad found (I had not plugged in my ipod for this test)
I desperately need to get Itunes to sync with the ipad so I can load content on it... and obviously cannot do so using someone else's computer.
Looking for advice on files I could download, or other steps I can take to resolve this please - frankly tired of searching and now on the verge of questioning decision to opt for Apple instead of Android !

Hi dxironman - thanks for the reply. Yeah you are right, I know this is a vista issue since I got my office staff to enable my work laptop to use iTunes temporarily which uses vista business, and I did not face any of these issues there and the iPad was ready to sync there.
Now just wondering if there is a way to achieve that experience on this home laptop which has home premium on it. Buying win 7 isn't really an option I want to look at now, given a 100$ + cost associated with it.
Welcome to being directed to any other links that have workarounds for tweaking vista.

  • Reader 8.1.2. freezes system (Vista Ultimate)

Ever since upgrading to 8.2.1., and not always, when I try to open a pdf, my system freezes completely. After opening the document, the mouse pointer disappears for a second or two, and when I am lucky, it comes back. When not, the clock in the side bar stops running, ant that's when I know: It froze again. Who would have thought that a simple software to display the contents of a file could lock up the whole machine. All I can do is to switch the computer off using the power-button, everything else froze. This is extremely annoying - going through any open window, saving everything, closing outlook, and then click on a pdf-file, because you cannot risk loosing all your data, and maybe messing up the whole set up of the computer just because you want to read a one page pdf.
I tried reinstalling, also as admin (although my account is an admin account), regularly delete "excess" temporary files (whatever that means), and for a couple of days I may be lucky and able to work with the reader. And then - out of the blue - it happens again.
I have no other version of the reader installed, nor does the system otherwise cause trouble with anything. Plenty of memory and disk space available, Dell Dimension 9200, Vista Ultimate SP1, all updates installed, everything running smoothly.
I did have - for a short time - Acrobat 5.0 on the machine, but deinstalled it.
My best guess is that cleaning up the registry from old Acrobat software might help, and would do it if I knew what to delete.
By the way, this started happening with the reader 8.1.2, no other reader caused this behaviour before. The older versions just did fine -
    Any clue?
    Thanks

This is bizzare. Glad you found that out, but hey, we are having multitasking computers with 2 processors and who knows what, but should hold our breath and not move when trying to perform such a simple task like opening a pdf with Adobe's reader.
Still, I will not revert back to Adobe. When using Foxit software, you can just work normally, without having to use a stop-watch, and wait until you turn into stone in front of your monitor...
My initial post dates back to May 15 - more than a month has gone into the land, many other users have confirmed this to be a bug, but the only ones who seem to be taking care of it are the end-users themselves. What a lousy service from Adobe.
Is my impression correct that all users who have this problem, run a DELL system? Maybe, the two giants should stick their heads together...

  • Is there log on Vista which could give me clues what has happened before freezing of Vista ?

    Hi,
    I have a Lenovo 3000 Y200 with Vista SP1.
I upgraded to SP1 a week ago, and since then I get the following:
After the laptop is left without user interaction for a few hours, I come to a blank screen, and the OS is frozen (though the three LEDs in the bottom are lighted).
Only option is electrical power off/on.
Is there a log file on the system which could give me clues what has happened before this freezing of the Vista ?
    Thanks,
    Ron.

    Hello,
simply fill in Vista searchbar at start: Event Viewer
Or go to start, control panel, computer administration, there should be the event manager.

  • Late 2008 MacBook Pro unibody - Hard Freezes under Vista 32bit

    Hi folks,
I am a relatively new Mac fan (started a few years ago when I purchased a Mac Mini for home because I didn't want to suffer Windows at home as well as at work!)
Anyhoo, late last year I purchased a MacBook Pro Unibody jobbie so that I could have the best of both worlds for my work. I can run Visual Studio under Vista for C++ development under boot-camp and run the Mac and OSX for just about everything else.
However: I have a problem that is testing my patience to brand new levels. In summary:
About once every couple of hours or so (and it's not reliable: could be after 30 seconds, could last several hours) Vista freezes. And I mean freeze: it takes a "hold the power button down" routine to get out of it. This, of course, has made Vista and lots of my work pretty upset. There's nothing quite like writing to a file when this happens for maximum tears. I'm running through tissues like you'd never believe
I have done some research on this over the months and have tried many possible solutions including, but not limited to, ensuring that I'm fully patched up and that there is no suspicious software, updating all the drivers (paying particular attention to NVIDIA's ones - as a DirectX/OpenGL programmer for the past 10 years I'm acutely aware of how touchy they are). None of these have worked.
The closest I've come to something that looks like a solution is this thingie called Riva Tuner; but it does not recognise the April 2009 NVIDIA drivers.
I understand that it could be linked with something NVIDIA's drivers do to speed up/slow down the cards depending on load/heat/whatever.
I'm so far down my tether at this point I really do not know where to turn. I love my MacBook, but I need Bootcamp and Vista to do my job. It was my choice to get a Mac rather than a PC, so I guess it's my own fault. I have seen many other users on the Internet who have the same problem but none of them appears to have a fool-proof resolution to this issue.
Thus, I thought I'd come here, get my best begging trousers on and grovel to Apple and to the learned users here to see if there is something that I can do to get everything working again so that I can continue to bask in the MacBook Pro glory knowing that my Vista installation is reliable.
    Grovelling over,
    Mr Cuttle.

Do you have anything against running Windows in a VM (virtual machine) under OSX to do your work? On the unibody, this is much more stable than boot camp in my experience.
here are the steps I took
    1) install smcfancontrol in OSX
    http://www.eidac.de/
    2) install virtualbox free virtualization software from Sun Microsystems
    http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/2.2.2/VirtualBox-2.2.2-46594-OSX.dmg
    3) install Windows using virtualbox like normal; use smcfancontrol to bump fan speeds if it runs hot (normally not needed unless you watch video or game).
    4) turn on seamless mode and run your windows apps side by side with OSX apps for free.
if you have issues setting it up, read here:
    http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/UserManual.html
this video shows how it works, albeit with a weird Japanese game app instead of Visual C++

and this screenshot that I took shows just how much you can do with this:

  • IPod 80GB freezes my Vista 64bit totally

I upgraded my PC recently and now I'm running Vista 64bit. Installed latest iTunes and connected my iPod. It installed something for short while and then was just supposedly looking for some driver (install icon spinning on task bar) never getting anywehere. Finally I removed my iPod as nothing else helped.
Now whenever I plug in my iPod it is recognized as USB Mass Storage Device under devices. If iTunes was running it freezes, if not, it does not start up. If I go to My Computer, iPod prevents any other USB mass storages from showing up and freezes My Computer too. I've tried uninstalling USB Mass Storage Deveice (iPod) under devices but that too freezes up never completing.
If I shut down iPod service in computer management, it at least lets me see my iPod with correct name under My Computer along with other USB removal storage devices (the USB hub in my monitor). When I try to access my iPod through My Computer it crashes again.
When I unplug my iPod, everything I was trying to do suddenly goes through and iTunes opens.
I cannot uninstall anything iPod related while it's connected and the entries are gone from under devices when it's not connected.
    What is wrong?

Have you heard anything on how to fix this issue? I'm having the exact same problem.

  • IPod (60) Freezes with Vista  shuffle (1GB) OK

I have a clean install of Windows Vista (Business) when I try to sync my iPod 60GB it freezes then blue screen of death and KERNELSTACK_INPAGEERROR. The one Gig shuffle is fine ... I only get this problem with iTunes and syncing with the 60GB iPod. Has anyone else seen this? This is not one of the problems specifically cited by Apple or Microsoft.

Upgrading my Nvidia SATA driver and iTunes reduces the crashes to once a week or less.

  • Late 08 MacBook Pro Hard Freezing in Vista - Only Happens when in Firefox??

    Hi All,
I know there are many topics for macbook crashes etc but I think that "blue screens" or "freezing during intensive graphics" are among the many different issues out there, caused by different things. Personally I can play games perfectly fine, everything works perfect, all apart from one thing: Firefox.
I want to focus this topic on ONLY users who are finding their Late 08 MacBook Pro hard freezes but ONLY when using Firefox.
By "hard freeze" I mean the whole of vista locks up; no response keyboard/mouse, nothing, even closing the lid does not put it in standby. You physically have to press and hold the power button to restart it.
Out of the dozens and dozens of freezes I experienced on my macbook, absolutely 100% of the freezes occured while I was loading/browsing a page in Firefox. At one point it was happening within minutes of a fresh boot, but I'm right now posting using Internet Explorer, have been browsing for hours, using multiple tabs, and I have not experienced a single freeze.
Please everyone bear in mind, this is NOT a topic about your macbook crashing during 3D gaming, this is JUST about it crashing whilst firefox is active.
Who else here has noticed their computer freezing during web browsing in firefox? Think carefully, are you one of us?
What I don't understand is why only firefox? And how can such a simple single piece of software cause a hardware freeze? It seems very bizarre but it is definitely the cause for me, 100%.
I just want to establish that I am not alone here

    @ The hatter:
Just updated my info below btw
Vista is indeed current and up to date, with SP1 with Apple BC 2.1
I've done the sfc /scannow and it didn't find any problems.
I'm running the latest version of Firefox now (3.0.5), but I have been keeping it up to date, and used to run older versions. This doesn't seem to change anything. I run many extensions in Firefox, but as Mr Fusion says he's experienced crashes in both Google Chrome and Safari (I haven't tried them), I doubt that's the issue. However I'll install those browsers and test to see if I get the same results.
Ive run Vista 64-bit for two years and use FF daily, alolng with Opera some, IE7 (and now IE8 beta 2).
Does this mean you are not using a Late 08 MacBook Pro and are using the older model?
Turn off disk cache in Firefox? I usually do, because otherwise Safari and FF do a lot of disk I/O.
Yeah I have Offline Storage set to 0MB, assuming that is the setting you are referring to?
So shouldn't everyone who has a late 08 Macbook pro with Bootcamp be experiencing this problem? How come some of us have and some of us don't?
I think the problem is that this problem is quite intermittant and random. Sometimes I can use firefox for hours and hours without a crash, and other times it'll happen relatively quickly.

  • Portege M400 freezing with Vista - Solution!

    Hi,
If you have vista on M400 and experience freezing, just go to Intel and install the latest driver http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df-external/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=2301&lang=eng
It is really worth it. I was about to return the machine and now i am in paradise!
    See you!

    Hi
    Thanks. Its very nice information.
PS: I will install the Vista in the next couple of days on my Sat notebook.
I wonder I it will work.

  • Constant freezing of vista

ive tried re-installs, formatting my computer, re-downloading the package from the offical itunes website.
the software always locks up on vista when re-naming my tracks using 'get info'
it will be fine for the first 2 or 3 albums, but then freeze completely.
is this software 'FULLY' vista compatable, i never had this problem on XP.

I had a problem that may or may not be related to this thread.
It all started with trying to sync my photos to my iPod. It would pretty much crash my computer every time. After some searching, it seems the solution is to put them on an external hard drive/USB drive/etc. - essentially something that is not formatted by and for Vista I guess.
When I tried to watch a movie or TV show, it would lock up my computer as well. When I tried watching a movie or TV show in iTunes from my iPod instead of my Library though, it worked fine, so it occurred to me to try putting my video files on my external hard drive as well and they now work fine.
I can't say for sure what causes the problem. From reading elsewhere, it may even have something to do with having a RAID setup for your hard drives; I can't really say. All I know is that everything works just great - watching video and syncing my iPod - as long as they're stored on my external hard drive.
It's BS that this is still a problem considering my search turned up complaints that seem to be about this particular problem dating back nearly a year, and for those of you without external storage, you have my sympathies, but for those of you with it, hopefully this will help.
