9.1 startup-no tone

Hi- I just upgraded my 9.0 to 9.1 and on the restart no "b-flat ahhh" tone or whatever it is called happened, but it did start up and set up was no problem. Is there an issue if the tone doesn't happen?

  • Random Startup - Low tone then starts up unattended, what gives?

Today, my iMac G5 started up by itself. First I heard a low 1 second tone, then the typical bong. I looked over and sure enough, it had started... I thought, well, I must have left it turned on. So I shut it down and about 10 minutes later it did it again, but this time it opened into open firmware. Strange... So, I checked the system long and found some interesting entries. there were entries referring to AppleTalk startup... Now I have other macs on my network as well as a time capule and Apple TV. Is it possible they are doing a remote startup? I can't see why, but have no other explanation. After the 3rd time this happened, I just unplugged it. This is really weird...

Getting rid of the dust is a good idea, removing all peripherals might help as well. Reset the SMU too. I'm not sure what the low tone is, tones generally indicate dissatisfaction with existing RAM, so you might want to test it using Rember.
    Hope some of this helps,

  • G5 semi-startup, weird tone, and dead ?!?!?

I have a Dual 2GHz G5 with OS 10.4.3 and 2.5GB RAM Just this evening this started happening: when I press the power button to start the G5 up, the power light briefly while the fans fire up...and then everything goes silent.
I plugged into an entirely different outlet, changed the power cable, unplugged all peripherals but the keyboard/mouse/monitor - but nothing worked.
What's even stranger is if I hold the power button in, the power light stays lit and the computer will go a bit further into the startup cycle and then suddenly emit a steady tone through the internal speaker until I let go of the button. Is this some sort of warning signal that the PSU is busted?
I haven't tried taking out the extra RAM yet, so I guess that's the next step. Any suggestions?

Your symptoms look exactly like mine - including the processor and memory configuration
I tried booting the machine after it had been powered down and disconnected from the mains for about two weeks, and got the same behaviours as yours (although I didn't try pressing the power button for more than 10 secs or so).
My computer has now been at the repair workshop for 4 weeks, and they still haven't been able to figure out what's wrong with it.

  • Startup Chime/Tones

After powering up the iMac flat screen, I hear what sounds to be a normal memory test chime, then 3 seperate tones. There is no display on the screen. The system had been working when I turned it off for about a week while testing another computer?? Help? Am I still seeing a memory problem of some type??
    Thanks, rich

    Rich,You are correct it's a memory problem.
    This article refers.
I'm surpirsed to see this if you haven't changed anything. I'd recommend re-seating any RAM modules.

  • N97 Firmware V20 THINK TWICE BEFORE UPDATE

I just upgraded successfully on my N97-3 NAM. After the update my N97 rebooted and it showed Nokia logo and 10 seconds later it came to the startup ringtone (connecting 2 people logo). It was slow but it still managed to the Home screen.
Later, because the phone was lagging a bit I decided to reboot (press the key on top and switch off).
HOWEVER WHEN I TRIED TO TURN IT ON, IT HANG AT THE NOKA LOGO (BLUE NOKIA TEXT) AND NEVER WENT TO THE STARTUP RING TONE (CONNECTING TO HANDS), MAKING MY PHONE TOTALLY UNSUABLE.
I tried to remove the battery and tried again but still no go. Now I need to use my backup phone. There's no way to turn my phone on again.
I'm not sure I'm the only person who gets this. So everyone please think carefully before upgrading your phone.
    Just some heads up.

My update also went smooth and the phone felt a little bit quicker afterwards.  With a well kept C drive I had 40mb free with nothing installed to it (a gain of around 2 to 5mb).
Changed themes and the phone froze completely forcing me to pull the battery.  After that it would not boot up at all so I had to do the hard reset.
After that (and restoring my data) the phone was even quicker with nearly 60mb free on the C drive.  I'm kind of glad I had to reset as it was worth it for the extra speed!

What did you use to do your backup?  The first time I ran a backup on my initial N97 (that one went wrong so it got returned) none of my applications got restored despite being told there were put back on.  Did you do the 7370 reset or the 'big one' and did everything restore OK for you?

  • Log on screen not working with wireless keyboard only usb KB

Since upgrading to mountain lion from the latest version of Lion, I am not  able  to log  on  with my wireless keybord only with usb kb but  the  wireless kb  is  working  well, it  react  but no stars ** appear in the  log on password field
So i  enter  with  the  usb kb and  then the  wireless kb  is working  well
I put  all  keybord settings  to  default
I reset  smc  and pram  but  same behaviour
Any  hint  to  fix  this  ?

I fought for it for long time. I used command-r, option key, command-option-r, option-r, everything you can imagine but it did not work. I even  shut down the imac and then tried all these combinations but it still did not work. I EVEN TRIED APPLE's OFFICIAL ANSWER TO THIS ISSUE BUT BELIEVE ME IT DID NOT WORK AS WELL. Then I deeply thought for a while and shutdown the iMac. Then I took off the batteries from the wireless keyboard. Then Waited for 5 seconds or so. Then I just started the wireless keyboard with the button on the side. It started blinking. I immediately understood that my trick is going to work. I understood the problem. While the keyboard was blinking I started the imac. Now after startup chime from apple i just pressed the option key. And guess what- THE RECOVERY OPTION POPPED UP! See, the point is after you restart or shutdown the keyboard is still kind of paired with the imac so when you start it those keys are kind of overlooked. When you reaaly take out the batteries from the keyboard the pairing is lost. When you restart the imac the pairing is established during the startup chime tone. This is precisely the moment to press those keys like option or command-r. The command-r key works only if you have imac that was preinstalled with 10.8
I hope this saves your hours of work! I really wished that APPLE knew it. I have so much believed in this company so far.

  • Disk Utility emergency backup

MacBook Pro Disk Utility emergency backup?
    I'm having some major issues!
My MacBook decided to melt down, and freeze on the gray apple logo screen. After a week of trying safe startup and tons of other tricks, I decided to wipe out my computer and start again.
I really wanted to save some pictures and documents, so I tried using Disk Utility to create a "image" on an external hard drive (I found this tutorial online). I clicked "scan image for restore" as instructed, and after waiting for over an hour I received the error message "unable to scan - internal error"
It's a MacBook Pro running on Mavericks.
Any advice is so appreciated. I would love to resolve this without loosing everything!
    Thanks!

How much do you want to save? If the amount isn't large, get an external drive and copy the files from the internal to the external in Finder.
Do you have a backup? If not start one, preferable 2 (or more) on separate external hard drives. Make a backup on each external using Time Machine or a clone program. Once you have the backup, you then will be able to restore desired files to the internal hard drive after you have erased and reformatted.

  • Macbook Pro Startup Tone?

I have recently bought a Macbook Pro after using Windows for years. I have the Macbook Pro 13" Retina if this helps. Each time I start the Macbook there is a startup tone. Is there any way to mute this sound on startup? Hope you can help. Thanks

You really don't want to do that because the startup chime is the first piece of information about whether the computer is working properly.
Try turning down the sound volume. Sometimes this also works for the chime.
Search at macupdate.com for utilities that will mute the startup sound.

  • Power Mac G4 with OS 10.3.9: No startup tone

It is running, but there is no startup tone when it starts. It is also losing network connection pretty often. What does it mean when there is no start up tone... and how do I fix it? This model is referred to as Firewire 800.

Trying to reset the PRAM was what made me aware that there was no start up tone. Eventually I just held down the buttons until I figured it must have had plenty of time to "tone" twice. In the process of my "fixing" I also dumped cache files and rebooted in Safe mode. So I don't know which one did what, but as of now there is still no startup tone (bad speaker or connections I think, because I have audio through USB headphones but nothing through the internal speaker) but the network issues seem to have cleared up.
Oh, and I also reset the PMU (I think...) by shutting down, unplugging from AC, holding power button in for about 5 seconds, plug AC back in, and restarting.
Thank you very much for your help.

when you install the disc, do it with the machine powered off. Place the disc in the the slot, push it in while holding the power switch tp poer it up, while holding the "C" key down till the gear starts spinning. After the gear starts spinning you can release the C key and wait. This takes much longer than normal longer, then create a new account. Be ready to wait.
    USE YOUR ORIGINAL INSTALL DISC!

  • Tone on startup

I can't find anything about this, maybe someone can answer this question. Just upgraded to 10.5.5 from 10.4.11 using archive and install on my mid-2007 iMac. What a mess! Nothing is going right. This problem concerns a tone at start-up. I always had problems with freezing at startup. I would reset the PMU and repair permissions, use MacJanitor and rebuild the pre-binding every single time I had to start the computer. Now in Leopard I still freeze at startup, but the disk utility takes forever!! and doesn't repair anything when it does work! But i'm getting the obnoxious tone when I hit the power button before I get a screen. Sounds very ominous but I can't figure out what to do. What is is telling me, and how do I fix it? Thanks.
    Rick

First, updating a broken system is never a good thing. Problems usually only get worse, never better.
All those things you have to do are abnormal and most likely indicate a hardware problem.
Anything but the normal startup tone indicates errors.
    Macintosh startup tones:
    Tones Error
Error Tone. (two sets of different tones) Problem with logic board or SCSI bus.
Startup tone, drive spins, no video Problem with video controller.
Powers on, no tone. Logic board problem.
High Tone, four higher tones. Problem with SIMM.

Your problem could be anything from bad RAM, to a bad HD to some other hardware problem.

  • Startup Sound is Sounding Lower Tone...?

Everytime you start your MacBook, there's always a tone that your computer makes. After opening it from a sleep, it makes this sound. When the computer is off and you press the power button, it makes this sound, but after years of owning this computer, the tone is getting much lower than how it sounded when I had purchased it.
I'm just wondering if that means my computer is getting really old and is dying?
Or that I'm just freaking out for nothing.
    Thank you very much.

    [SOLVED???]
Hey!  I tried something.  The startup chime is now lower.  Don't know if there is really a "cause and effect" relationship here, but here's what I did:
I opened the "Guest" profile (which I never use) and lowered the "Alert" sound volume all the way down in that profile.
Ever since (4-5 days ago), the startup chime has been low!
    FWIW.

  • Long Beep tone at startup - Unable to select boot partition

Recently I was running a software update on an old G4 which had been working perfectly. When the system restarted it made a long beep tone then the usual bong. The system hung at the "starting login window" stage.
The beep is not a bad RAM beep, that one is short. This is a long beep like one you get when you update firmware.
Tried taking out and reseating the RAM but that did nothing.
After booting into OF a couple of times, doing "Reset All", Zapping PRAM etc. we still the get tone at startup only now we just get the white OF screen. It no longer tries to boot into OSX unless we type "Mac Boot", in which case it hangs at the login window again.
I attached an external drive with two partions, one with 10.3.9 and another with 10.4. Both will boot successfully on my old Pismo and my PB G4. When the OF screen came up I typed Mac Boot and held down the Option key. The blue screen came up and first boot partition was displayed, but the machine sat there and spun forwever searching for the others. I figured it was stuck on the internal drive so I disconnected the ribbon cable and tried again. This time both partions on the external drive are available, Yae! However when I go to select either one and click on the right arrow nothing happens. The selection seems to bounce back to the first partition. And through all of this the long beep tone is there at startup.
So thats the stage we are at. If anyone can shed some light on this situation we would be most appreciative. What is causing the tone? How can I fix it?
Why doesnt the system accept the boot drive selection?
    Mike

    Hi Petra,
It was one of the recent security updates for 10.3.9 along with Quicktime, iTunes etc. I couldn't tell you exactly which ones as its been a few weeks since the original event. However I can say that I had already done the recommended firmware update for that machine several months before the crash.
