We have a problem where our application stops responding after a few days of usage. Things will for fine for a day or two, and then pretty quickly threads will start getting hung up, usually in places where they are allocating memory
We are running WebLogic 8.1 SP2 on Sun JDK 1.4.2_04 on Solaris 8 using the alternate threading model and the -server hotspot vm. We are running pretty much the same code that we had no problems with under WebLogic 6.1 SP4 and Sun JDK 1.3.1.
A thread dump usually shows that some or all of our execute threads are in the state "waiting for monitor entry" even though they are not currently waiting on any java locks. Here is a sample thread from the thread dump (we have ~120 threads so I don't want to post the full dump).

String.java line 1446 for this jdk allocates a new String object, and all the other threads in this state also are creating new objects or arrays, etc.
We've done a pstack on this process when it's in this state, and the threads that are in the "waiting for monitor entry" that look like they're allocating memory are all waiting on the same lwp_mutex_lock with some allocation method that's calling into the native TwoGenerationCollectorPolicy.mem_allocate_work (see pstack output below for the same thread as in the thread dump above)

Also when it's having this problem, the "VM Thread" is always using a lot of processor time. We did a couple of pstacks today while it was having this problem, and this thread was stuck in the ONMethodSweeper.sweep for over 15 minutes when we finally killed the server.
From the thread dump:

Has anyone ever seen anything like this? I'm trying to figure out if this is caused by something we're doing, or something relating to our environment and jvm options. Any ideas? Thanks for the reply - I'm testing our app with the +UseConcMarkSweepGC now in our test environment to make sure it doesn't cause any problems there. Unfortunately the only place we've had this problem is on the production server, so it's extra difficult debugging this.
We're using the following memory options:
-ms512m -mx512m -XX:NewSize=128m -XX:PermSize=192m -XX:MaxNewSize=128m -XX:MaxPermSize=192m -XX:SurvivorRatio=8and the following debugging options, as we've also been seeing OutOfMemoryErrors ( see http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=37&thread=522354&tstart=45&trange=15 )
-verbosegc -XX:+PrintGCDetails -XX:+PrintGCTimeStamps -XX:+PrintHeapAtGCBTW, which c++filt version and options are you using? Our Solaris boxes only seem to have the GNU version installed. I was trying to run that on some of the other stack traces and wasn't getting anywhere, and didn't know if because it was GNU version wouldn't work on something compiled with the Sun compiler.
Thanks!

Problem with threads in my swing application
Hi,
I have some problem in running my swing app. Thre problem is related to threads.
What i am developing, is a gui framework where i can add different pluggable components to the framework.
The framework is working fine, but when i press the close action then the gui should close down the present component which is active. The close action is of the framework and the component has the responsibility of checking if it's work is saved or not and hence to throw a message for saving the work, therefore, what i have done is that i call the close method for the component in a separate thread and from my main thread i call the join method for the component's thread. But after join the whole gui hangs.
I think after the join method even the GUI thread , which is started for every gui, also waits for the component's thread to finish but the component thread can't finish because the gui thread is also waiting for the component to finish. This creates a deadlock situation.
I dont know wht's happening it's purely my guess.
One more thing. Why i am calling the component through a different thread, is because , if the component's work is not saved by the user then it must throw a message to save the work. If i continue this message throwing in my main thread only then the main thread doesnt wait for user press of the yes no or cancel button for saving the work . It immediately progresses to the next statement.
Can anybody help me get out of this?
Regards,

Problem with threads in JFrame
Hy everyone...i have a small problem when i try to insert clock in my JFrame , because all i get is an empty text field.
What i do is that i create inner class that extends Thread and implements Runnable , but i dont know ... i saw some examples on the intrnet...but they are all for Applets...
Does any one know how i can implement this in JFrame (JTextField in JFrame).
Actually any material on threads in JFrame or JPanel would be great....THNX.For my original bad thread version, I have rewritten it mimicking javax.swing.Timer

New DVR Issues (First Run, Channel Switching, etc.)
I've spent the last 30 minutes trying to find answers through the search with no luck, so sorry if I missed something.
I recently switched to FIOS from RCN cable in New York. I've gone through trying to setup my DVR and am running into issues and was hoping for some answers.
1. I setup two programs to record at 8PM, I was watching another channel at the time and only half paying attention. Around 8:02 I noticed a message had popped up asking if I would like to switch channels to start recording. I was expecting it to force it to switch like my old DVR, but in this case it didn't switch and I missed the first two minutes of one of the shows. I typically leave my DVR on all day and just turn off the TV, this dual show handling will cause issues with that if I forget to turn off the DVR. Is there a setting I can change that will force the DVR to choose one of the recording channels?
2. I setup all my recordings for "First Run" because I only want to see the new episodes. One show I setup was The Daily Show on comedy central, which is shown weeknights at 11pm and repeated 3-4 times throughout the day. My scheduled recordings is showing all these as planned recordings even though only the 11pm show is really "new". Most of the shows I've setup are once a week so they aren't a problem, but this seems like it will quickly fill my DVR. Any fixes?
Thanks for the help.
Solved!
Go to Solution.I came from RCN about a year ago. Fios is different in several ways, not all of them desirable. Here are several ways to get--and fix--unwanted recordings from a series recording setup.
Some general principles.
Saving changes. When you originally create a series with options, or if you go back to edit the options for an existing series, You MUST save the Series Options changes. Pretty much everywhere else in the user interface, when you change an option, the change takes effect immediately--but not in Series Options. Look at the Series Options window. Look at the far right side. There is a vertical "Save" bar, which you must navigate to and click OK on to actually save your changes. Exiting the Series Options window without having first saved your changes loses all your attempted changes--immediately.
Default Series Options. This is accessed from [Menu]--DVR--Settings--Default Series Options. This will bring up the series options that will automatically be applied to the creation of a NEW series. The options for every previously created series will not be affected by a subsequent modification of the Default Series Options. You should set these options to the way you would like them to be for the majority of series recordings that you are likely to create. Be sure to SAVE your changes. This is what you will get when you select "Create Series Recording" from the Guide. When creating a new series recording where you think that you may want options different from the default, select "Create Series with Options" instead. Series Options can always be changed for any individual series set up later--but not for all series at once.
Non-series recordings. With Fios you have no directly available options for these. With RCN and most other DVRs, you can change the start and end times for individual episodes, including individual episodes that are also in a series. With Fios, your workarounds are to create a series with options for a single program, then delete the series later; change the series options if the program is already in a series, then undo the changes you made to the series options later; or schedule recordings of the preceding and/or following shows as needed.
And now, to the unwanted repeats.
First, make sure your series options for the specific series in question--and not just the series default options--include "First Run Only". If not, fix that and SAVE. Then check you results by viewing the current options using the Series Manager app under the DVR menu.
Second, and most annoying, the Guide can have repeat programs on your channel tagged as "New". It happens. Set the series option "Air Time" to "Selected Time". To make this work correctly, you must have set up the original series recording after selecting the program in the Guide at the exact time of a first run showing (11pm, in your case), and not on a repeat entry in the Guide. Then, even it The Daily Show is tagged as New for repeat showings, these will be ignored.
Third, another channel may air reruns of the program in your series recording, and the first showing of a rerun episode on the other channel may be tagged as "New". These can be ignored in your series if you set the series option "Channel" to "Selected Channel". Related to this, if there is both an SD and HD channel broadcasting you series program, you will record them both if the series option "Duplicates" is set to "Yes". However, when the Channel option is set to "Selected Channel", the Duplicates Option is always effectively "No", regardless of what shows up on the options screen.
As for you missing two minutes, I have sereral instances in which two programs start recording at the same time. To the best of my recollection, whenever the warning message has appeared, ignoring it has not caused a loss of recording time. You might have an older software version. Newest is v.1.8. Look at Menu--Settings--System Info. Or, I might not have noticed the loss of minutes. I regularly see up to a minute of previous programming at the start of a recording, or a few missing seconds at the beginning or end of a recording. There are a lot of possibilities for that, but the DVR clock being incorrect is not one of them. With RCN, the DVR clocks occasionally drifted off by as much as a minute and a half. -
Tecra M9-136 - BSOD during Vista SP2 update
Tecra M9-136 asked this morning to update to Vista SP2 and during the process the BSOD 0x0000007E arrived. Restarted in Safe Mode and the installer continued and then finally reported that the update had failed - and reverted to SP1. This took most of the morning.
It will start in Safe Mode but on a normal boot-up, Vista SP1 gets through the fingerprint recognition and then fails with the same BSOD (it doesn't get as far as displaying the desktop).
The laptop has BIOS level 1.80. I've tried in Safe mode to install 1.90 but it tells me that the battery has insufficient charge and the power adapter isn't attached. Both untrue.
Stuck - need advice. Could this be a hard fault? Can't see how I can update anything if it's a soft fault.
thanksThe message with the BSOD mentioned checking BIOS and driver versions. Anyway, no change made to that.,
I tried System Restore but the only available restore point was the SP2 installation. I thought Vista was supposed to save a restore point every 24 hours even if nothing new had been installed.
I've now found in System Information / Windows Error Reporting several messages like this:

Is there any plan for an enterprise version of adobe cloud?
http://www.adobe.com/au/products/creativecloud/buying-guide-membership.html
Creative Cloud for organizations
Later this year, Adobe will release Adobe Creative Cloud Team, a version of Creative Cloud membership specifically for organizations. Until then, Creative Cloud Team Ready gives companies immediate access to all the CS6 tools and more, plus it serves as an onramp to Creative Cloud Team when it's available.
Volume licensing customers can take advantage of the Creative Cloud Team Ready offering through Adobe’s Transactional Licensing Program (TLP) which is based on a one-year term agreement and is available for purchase through any Adobe corporate resellers. Customers who choose this option will automatically be transitioned into Creative Cloud Team membership as soon as it becomes available later in 2012. -
Hi,
I have a problem using Xtext generated ecore files in both Eclipse and standalone Java. In a nutshell, Xtext generates relative ecore references which work fine in Eclipse for platform:/resource URIs which make it seem like all projects are siblings of each other, but break when loading resources via absolute file:/ URIs when projects are not physically situated in the same directory.
For example, I have a few Xtext languages that import each other and refer to each other's elements. Xtext generates ecore files for these languages, and they wind up having relative references to each other. I have a com.mecha1.atom.model.query Xtext project whose language generates an AtomQuery.ecore with references to an imported AtomType.ecore that look like this:
Quote:
eType="ecore:EClass ../../../../../../../com.mecha1.atom.model.type/src/com/mecha1/atom/model/type/AtomType.ecore#//EntityDecl"
This works ok in Eclipse because the actual absolute URIs are platform:/resource based and all of the workspace projects are directly referenced via platform:/resource/<project>:
Quote:
platform:/resource/com.mecha1.atom.model.query/src-gen/com/mecha1/atom/model/query/AtomQuery.ecore
platform:/resource/com.mecha1.atom.model.type/src/com/mecha1/atom/model/type/AtomType.ecore
However on the filesystem these projects exist in different subdirectories:
Quote:
file:/Users/esp/Code/mecha1/Atom/atom/data/com.mecha1.atom.model.query/bin/com/mecha1/atom/model/query/AtomQuery.ecore
file:/Users/esp/Code/mecha1/Atom/atom/core/com.mecha1.atom.model.type/bin/com/mecha1/atom/model/type/AtomType.ecore
So when the relative path is used to navigate from one ecore model to the other they do not resolve correctly. The relative URIs will also break if resources are loaded from archive:/ URIs e.g. when loaded from classpath bundles via org.eclipse.xtext.mwe.Reader.
Is there a strategy deal with this? For instance, is there a way to force Xtext to generate absolute URIs for cross references? Then at least I could use the EMF URI map to remap things depending on what context the models are being loaded in.
Thanks,
EdwinEdwin,

Yes, because it doesn't index them until they commit this patch I provided:

Yes, that's the bug I referred to.

But it's an actual deployed bundle so it's actually on the classpath but
the PDE doesn't properly put the model folder on the classpath, only the
bin folder.

Timeouts and "cancelled" notifications...
Greetings,
We are using the standard (unmodified) version of the iExpense workflows (11.5.5 on Windows, WF 2.6.1), and have a curious and annoying problem...
1. User submits expense report
2. "Approval Request" notification times-out (after 5 days)
3. "No Response" e-mail notification sent back to original user.
4. "No Response" notification times-out (after 7 days)
5. NEW "No Response" e-mail notification generated, and sent to original user.
6. OLD "No Response" notification cancelled automatically.
7. "CANCELLED: No Response" e-mail notification immediately sent to original user.
8. Same pair of notifications generated one week later (new "No Response", plus "CANCELLED: No Response" notification referring the previous week's notification), and again a week after that, and so on...
This is maddening to our users who miss the first message, because (after that first week), they are getting PAIRS of messages every week (only seconds apart) that seem to say to them...
Message #1: Hey, there's a problem!!
Message #2: Oh, never mind, no problem at all.
Has anyone else encountered this problem? How did you handle it? Any ideas?
Thanks a bunch!! -- Tom
[email protected]Hm. I've confirmed 2396373 is the patch number. Here are the steps I used to locate the patch on MetaLink:
1) Click the Patches button on the MetaLink navigation menu.
2) In the Patch Download page, enter 2396373 in the Patch Number field.
3) Click Submit. This should display the platforms where the patch is available.
Could you try one more time with these steps and see if you can access it this way?

Thanks for the feedback.
I searched MetaLink for both the specific patch number you gave, and also the phrase (description) you gave - with no results on either search. (???) Is this patch only visible by requesting it with a TAR, or by some other means?
Please clarify, or double-check the patch number. Thanks a bunch!! -- Tom -

Help my safari doesnt open and gives me a crash report
help my safari doesn't open and gives me a crash report ever since i downloaded a file from the internet. I have a macbook air (early 2014) with running os x yosemite version 10.10.1
There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
You may have installed the "Genieo" or "InstallMac" ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it.
Back up all data before making any changes.
Besides the files listed in the linked support article, you may also need to remove this file in the same way:
~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.ltvbit.plist
If there are other items with a name that includes "Genieo" or "genieo" alongside any of those you find, remove them as well.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, then you may have one of the other kinds of adware covered by the support article. Follow the rest of the instructions in the article.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. Chances are you got it from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates
if it's not already checked. -

i click on itunes but doesnt open and says send error report or dont send
You will need to provide more details as we cannot see your computer screen. Does this happen every time you launch LabVIEW? What version of LabVIEW are you using? What version of Windows? Does LabVIEW crash? If so, what were you doing at the time it crashed?

I have used MF for years, and have done nothing to the application directly to stop it opening. Have I messed up by deleting something on my PC, please?
If you use ZoneAlarm Extreme Security then disable Virtualization and reinstall Firefox.

Open project cancelled or unable to load database...
I have been running version 9 sucessfully and moving projects around with no errors. Today, I cannot load any of my projects.
I have been through the threads and deleted the .cpj, moved the project to the root of my hard drive, etc.
Something else is going on.
I did see some information on files being blocked by the virus scanner. I'll pursue that with my help desk.
Any other ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks! The only file that is MS Access based is the CPD file and it does not matter which version of Access you have on your machine, indeed you don't have to have Access installed.
If you have the same problems with the supplied sample projects, then maybe something has gone wrong with your installation of RoboHelp. Click Open on the RoboHelp Starter page and then click Samples in the ribbon on the left.

Open and edit animated .gif while preserving frame timing
CS4 Premium Design Edition, Win XP
I was disappointed with the removal of Image Ready from CS3 because although some of the functionality was placed into Photoshop 10, there was no way to open and edit an existing animated .gif while preserving the timing of each individual frame. I was told on the PS forum at the time that I really needed to use Fireworks. I resented that, because I was very happy with Image Ready and I didn't want to have to learn a new application just to gain functionality that had been included in previous versions of PS/IM.
I've now got CS4 Premium Design Edition which of course includs Fireworks... and here's what Help has to say on the subject of imported .gifs.
"Note: When you import an animated GIF, the state delay setting defaults to 0.07 seconds. If necessary, use the States panel to restore the original timing."
This is no use to me. What if I don't know the individual frame timings? What if there are 200 frames with varying timings?
Simple question: which current Adobe product is capable of importing a .gif while retaining the frame timings? If anyone knows, or if I've misunderstood the nature of the Fireworks Help quote above, I'd really appreciate some input here. Thanks :)
Not so simple question: why was an excellent gif-editing application thrown out to have its functionality partially replaced by a bunch of scripts and half-effective workarounds cooked up by desperate users ("import a gif by using the video import and typing *.* into the filename box..")? It's a fair question I think.
MarkHi Bob, that's not glib at all, it's a reasonable question.
I uninstalled it along with everything else when I installed CS3, in the reasonable expectation that whatever replaced IR would be at least equal in functionality.
Perhaps I should just dig out CS2 and install IM from there, but I have some serious reservations about doing so, because I don't know if/how a partial install of CS2 will impact upon my installation of CS4, and I'm not confident of getting support.
I am also curious to know if/why Adobe actually removed basic functionality without replicating or replacing it in their other software. I really want to know: which recent, currently supported Adobe product
should I be using in order to regain this functionality? Or do Adobe no longer produce a geniuinely comprehensive .gif-editing application?
Mark
