9 Beeps at start up

When I press the power button, the my the cd drive starts up then winds down and I get a series of beeps. 3 quick, 3 slow, and 3 more quick. Yes, that is morse code for SOS. How ironic. After about 30 seconds, the whole process starts again... cd drive starts up, winds down and the series of beeps. Also, during this, the screen does not come on. I've inserted the install disc, but no luck. I've done the reset steps that the troubleshooting tells me to do, but to no avail. The only thing that I know that may have contributed to this is when I initially pressed the power button to start up, I noticed the button was stuck in a recessed position, like it was being held down. I saw the button was a little **** eyed, so I pressed and twisted until it became flush again. Called the help line, but it's past operating hours. Any help from any one would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

In my case the problem was an unsuccessful firmware upgrade.
It can be resolved with a Firmware restoration CD.

  • IMac makes a loud beep on start up, won't load past the blue screen and the black ticking dial appears every few seconds in centre of screen.

    Urgent help!
Out of the blue my mac lost the mouse cursor even though it had connection so I rebooted only for the mac to make a loud beep on start up then get stuck at the blue loading screen. It won't load past the blue screen. I've tried to reboot holding down the shift key but no change. I've also shut down, unplugged the main for 15 seconds, re plug and wait 5 seconds before starting up again but no change. Does anyone have any suggestions?
PS: I'm not too sure which systems I am running without being able to check in about this mac. I bought my imac in January or February 2011 if that helps.

The power on self-test resides in the ROM of the computer. This test runs whenever the computer is turned on after being fully shut down (the power-on self-test does not run if the computer is only restarted).
If a fault is detected during the test, you will not hear a normal startup chime. Instead, the system will beep as explained below. If you experience one of these beeps, you may call your Apple Authorized Service Provider for additional troubleshooting assistance.
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable

three beeps when starting from a disc

If your MBP came with lion or mountain lion.  You will need to reboot the computer with a bootable Lion DVD. Unlike previous versions of Mac OS X, Lion (OS X 10.7) doesn’t ship with a bootable disc—it’s available only as an installer app downloadable from the Mac App Store.  Once you have attained one of these disks. Boot and enter utilities and reformat the hard disk. Ensure that "Guid" is selected under options and that you also select "Mac OS Extended - Journaled. Hopefully before you do any of this you have a very recent time machine backup.
Once reformatted the computer should startup from the Lion Boot DVD without the beeps and you can reinstall the OS and restore your backup.

  • Ibook g4 what to do, 3 beeps on start up.

    Hello,
You will have to bare with me as I'm not well up on macs but hoping you can provide some ideas.
Ive had an Ibook g4 for years now and its never failed me untill roughly 5 months ago when I tried to turn it on and I got 3 beeps on start up (apparently no good banks).
Ive looked around and its something to do with my Ram. Ive looked inside and it looks like that i have built in Ram as there are no ram sticks inside, otherwise id simply pull them out and reposition as seen on other articles. Ive also been quoted 50 pound from a local shop to just diagnose the problem!
Ive seen that on ebay people are fetching 80 - 100 pound for faulty G4's, but not sure what to do. So my questions to you are:
    - Should I try and get it fixed, will this be expenisve, is it worth it for this product, and where do I get it fixed?
    - Does anywhere trade in macs towards a new one?
    - Should I just put it on ebay and hope for the best?
Not sure what to do or who to turn to but I cant leave the thing lying there much longer as its served me well for years!
Thanks in advance for any of your ideas
    Kerrie

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
If there is no good RAM and there is no RAM installed in the one user-accessible RAM slot, then that means that the built-in RAM which is soldered to the logic board has failed. The iBook is not worth the price of the repair.
You could sell it on eBay, but you might get more out of it if you disassemble it and sell the parts. Also, if you can get the battery to charge, I would suggest charging it up until two lights flash on the battery indicator (which will set it up for storage), so you can sell the battery, too.
Since I don't know which exact model it is, check out iFixit's index page for G4 iBooks, and get ready with a screwdriver and spudger.

    Good luck!

    1. Yes.

Usually inside the battery compartment. Check your user manual for instructions on accessing the RAM slots. If you don't have the manual you can download a copy at support.apple.com/manuals/. You will need to know the actual model you have to get the correct manual for it.

  • Satellite X200-25H - 3 beeps on start up and wont boot-up

Hi guys, I'm looking for a little advice before I get in touch with Tosh, it might be something I can fix myself hopefully.
I Have a slight issue with my laptop at present. I've turned it on this morning and received 3 beeps on start up (a quieter beep pause then loud beep pause then another loud beep) and fails to boot. I have the power, battery and standby lights on lit and the fans appear to be whirling ever so slightly but I cant get no POST or the Toshiba Screen to appear. On the surface it looks like a hardware fault, the thing is in the few years I've had this laptop, I've not experienced any issues what so ever.
It was fine shutting down last night, the error seems to have appeared from nowhere.
Any idea what these 3 beeps could point to? I've had a quick look this morning ie re-seating the RAM and Hard Drives but I got fed up trying to figure out which of the 100 more screws I needed to undo to get to the GPU's and CPU haha. Just looking for a little direction.
    Kind Regards
    Tony

    Hi
Yes, the single motherboard is very expensive so if warranty is not valid anymore then its not worth to spend the money only for new mobo.
    >>It is unfair that after spending lot of cash for the notebook, it didn't last longer than 3 1/2 years completely disappointed with Toshiba now.
Guess what? My dad bought a notebook from another manufacturer; the notebook did not boot up after 3 month of usage. Fortunately the warranty was still valid.
So its just a bad luck dude. Notebook can start to malfunction after some days/weeks of usage of after years or it will run properly the whole time.
Ive got two Toshiba notebooks. Until now everything works properly.

Hi its rashed. I have ideapad n581. For a few weeks my laptop is beeping during start up. It doesn't beep the same every time. Its different. I cannot solve the problem. tried cleaning the ram.
Operating system of the laptop: Windows 7 home prm
    4GB ram
Would be great if any one can help.

Maybe it's your mouse problem / faulty. Need to change the new one. BTW do you do any RAID?

Nope such patterns, they are all the same, short and fast. I get one beep a few seconds after I hit the power button then after the POST screen comes up a second or two after it comes up the short rappid beeps go one untill it goes on to the RAID (set-up/test I guess it is?) the last beep or two usaully sounds a bit odd, I assumed becasue it was doing the RAID check (or whatever it is).
Yes a while ago, probably a month or two now though.
Nope, I've tried that a few times, it doesn't do anything.

  • Z77A-GD55 Doesn't beeps at start

Hi everyone, I just recently replaced my P67A-GD55 by a Z77A-GD55 and so far there is no problem at start up or shut down. I have a little question though; ¿ Is it OK for the board not to beep at start up? We verified that the little speaker in the motherboard is working, we take out the memory and beeped, so we are sure it is OK
I am asking the question because this thread says that AMI BIOS must beep once to indicate that it is working OK
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=86906.0
    Thanks

New bios versions have the beeps on a successful boot removed as most considered that annoying. It will only beep in case of problems. So no beeping is good.

  • 9 Beeps when starting up

My Late 2008 MBP has a strange problem today: when pressing power button, it took a long time (about 5-8 seconds) to respond, and it beeps 9 times (3 short, 3 long , then 3 short) along with the white LED at the front of the machine blinks. After that the screen becomes gray from black, and I can still log in and use it. But the beeps are really annoying. I search for the codes for the 9 beeps but had found nothing on the web. Anyone experienced the same problem? Thank you.

    Hello,
my MBP is affected by this issue as well.
I do not believe this issue is directly related to the firmware update or to an error which occurred during a firmware update. To me the issue came up ~4month after the last successfull firmware update and occurrs quite randomly.
    *My Analysis:*
    What is happening:
Just now after owning/using the device for 8 month the 9 beeps issue appeared: Occasionally the MBP will not start up (no fanfare Mac Startup sound). The Power LED will flash and the system sounds 9 beeps (3short, 3long, 3short). Then nothing happens. (on of the KB entries above mentions that after the 9 beeps alert the system should restore the firmware.. but this does not seem to be happening. Also the system does not reboot automatically (I waited for a long time)). After some wait time and after some hard reboots the system powers up normally.
    Past Firmware Updates:
To me that can not be the case. First of all I did not apply a firmware update recently. The last EFI firmware update (EFI 1.6) was successful and about 4-5month ago.
As a side note: I believe for modern Macs there are no Firmware Restoration CDs because a backup solution for the firmware is left right on the hard drive.. So the system will attemt to recover the firmware by itself - no CD needed.
To me the Apple KB entry:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1221
seems more conclusive. Unfortunately it addresses only the MacBook Air but I believe a similar issue may apply to the MacBook Pro. So I think there is something wrong with the system - and one should take it to Apple's support or an Authorized Apple Service provider. In Germany the support is generally a bit bad and I have a bad feeling about the issue being not easy to reproduce. I will anyhow try to bring my device to an Apple ASP and get it fixed.
*With regards to reproducing the issue:*
For me the problem seems to occur quite randomly. However I found out: When you leave the device in Sleep mode for a long time (4-6hrs +) then wake it, then shut it down. Then Press the power button - the problem shows up in approx. 3 out of 5 tries.
I have also tried fixing the problem but all these things did not work:
    * Taking out the battery
    * Using a different battery
    * Performing an SMC/CMOS reset
    * I have ran Apple Hardware test and also it did not find anything (however a day later the issue occurred again)
Any further experiences or ideas would be highly appreciated.. Has Aplle succesfully repaired your device? Did you fix it? When does the issue occur on your machine?

  • MacBook Pro Retina - 3 beeps on start straight from box

While on a trip to the USA I bought a new MacBook Pro Retina. It was shipped to me in New York and I brought it back to Israel with me without turning it on.
I have just opened it up, pressed power and I get three beeps over and over. Machine is completely dead on arrival. DOA.
Not a happy camper. Will have to wait till later to phone the retailer (who I have bought a ton of stuff from). Now I'm going to discover just how nasty the local importer and Apple service provider can be on goods not bought from his store. I even declared this computer at the airport and paid VAT on it.
Moral: always check for DOA before flying around the world. I'm starting to have very bad feelings toward Apple quality. The reason for buying this machine is because my MBP 2011 failed on me but I managed to get it fixed (at my own expense of course) with a change of graphic card and re-flow of the motherboard.
    Apple quality is deteriorating.
    Open to any other suggestions.

Click on the Contact Us link at the bottom of this website.  Ask politely & firmly that you want to be transferred to Customer Relations Department.  Tell them exactly what you stated in your post.  See what they can do for you.  This department jumps through hoops to keep Apple customers happy.
    GOOD LUCK!

  • White screen & beeping on start

My son's early 2008 15" Macbook pro shows only a white screen and beeping on pressing the power button. I am getting this info long distance. Does the beep configuration mean different things?. Is there a start up protocol for this?
    Dave

The beep sequence does mean that there is a hardware error.
Have him check the RAM sticks and make sure that one hasn't jiggled loose.

  • Pavillion dv6-6002ev is beeping on start up continuously

    Hello,
I have a problem with my laptop which is the Pavillion dv6-6002ev i5, operating system: Windows 7, error message: continues beep code at the start up, issues occurred: water was spilled through the keyboard, product LL053EA.
Actually I am not very proud of it but by mistake I spilled water on it through the keyboard. I immediately turned it off and I used the blow drier to dry it as much as I could..I removed even the keyboard and the memory cover from the back in order to be sure that all the water has gone.
After that I turned it on and in the start up there is a beep code ( I don’t have LED code at all) that is continues. If I press enter or another button then after awhile this sound stops for a while then starts again and then I have to choose from the Boot manager Windows7 and then starts.
Firstly the touchbad didn’t work but everything else worked fine (sounds, video, battery, processor). After 20 hours of the incident the touchbad started also to work but the light of the touchbad still does not work.
So the main problem is the loud sound at the beginning that doesn’t stop unless I use the boot manager to start the Windows.
I searched on the internet from the beginning and I saw that this beep code can only indicate a hardware problem so until now I have tried everything available on the internet to make this sound to stop (taken from here http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01732674&tmp_task=solveCategory&cc=us&dlc=en&lc...)But nothing worked and everything seemed fine, memory tests passed and everything.
Also I used the DST tests that are available from this model (Hard drive, Memory, Battery) but all of them passed...
So really after doing everything and without being an expert on PCs I would like to ask is there anything more that I can do in order this sound to stop and before I have to take it to expert to fix it? And is it this sound really worrying?, can I use the laptop until I will get it fixed or its better to have it off?
Thank you in advance for your responses

    Hey ktassi !
Gosh I hate when that happens! I've been there myself and I know it's very frustrating.
The first thing I would recommend doing is turning the computer on and getting all of the personal files backed up. That would be my priority. If you already have everything saved externally, then there's no need to worry with that step. Now, there is back up software out there that you can use. However, I've found  that copying and pasting each folder individually over to an external hard drive/flashdrive or cloud service is a more reliable way of backing up your files.
Once you have everything backed up, you can troubleshoot. It would be helpful to know what the beep pattern is that you're hearing at power on. You did a great job finding that document. It has a key on it that will tell you what component is affected depending on the beep patter you hear. If all of the hardware components seem to be working OK, you could try reloading Windows. Although, I couldn't guarantee this would help since the beep code indicates a hardware problem, but it well worth a try.
Here are the steps to perform a System Recovery after you have backed up all of your files. From the blue links at the top, choose "Recovery from the startup screen (during system boot)". When the recovery is done, use your computer normally. Start it up and shut it down several times to see if it will detect any problems (which will cause it to emit a beep pattern again). If it does still beep after the recovery, there may be a minimal hardware issue. That malfunctioning hardware may need to be repaired/replaced before the notebook will stop beeping.
You could also try muting the PC Beep.
Right Click on the Speaker symbol in the system tray > Click Playback Devices > Right Click on 'Speakers'/'Speakers and Headphones' > Click Properties > Click the Levels Tab > Mute PC Beep.
This method should be used with caution though because if there ever were a serious hardware failure that would cause the computer to beep, you would be unaware of it, possibly until it was too late.
Let me know what the beep pattern is. Please let me know if you have any questions or if these suggestions help (this could help others with the same issues). I'll keep an eye out for your reply!
