9 Multiple artists on iPod & only 2 in iTunes

I have 9 multiple artists on my iPod & 4 in iTunes;
On iPod: The Bloodhound Gang (5 times) & Bloodhound Gang (4 times)
On iTunes: The Bloodhound Gang (2 times) & Bloodhound Gang (1 time)
I have attempted to delete Bloodhound Gang on iTunes, only to have it reappear every time I sync my iPod. Also, I have attempted to change the name to only list The Bloodhound Gang, so to only list 1 artist, but that doesn't work either. All tracks are from one album, with 2 tracks purchased from iTunes and the whole CD loaded later. The Bloodhound Gang is for the whole CD, while just Bloodhound Gang is for the single tracks purchased. My iPod is PC format.

It will be easier if you use the same artist name & album artist name for all tracks from the same album. Since you have duplicate tracks I would suggest you also uncheck these and use the option to *Sync only check items*. The multiple albums issue ocurs because "The Artist" & "Artist" get sorted together, but the iPod registers the change in artist name as it is ennumerating the tracks and so creates a new album cover. Read on for more info.
*HowTo: Grouping Tracks Into Albums*
Excuse the long post, but hopefully covering all the bases (that I can think of) will help you fix the other issues you are likely to run into as you try to organise your iTunes library.
*Use an album friendly view*
iTunes will let you sort music on many columns, some of which are unlikely to group albums together or put the tracks in their normal order. The most useful order for editing the library is probably *Album by Artist*. If you're not already there, select the list view and click on the column heading for Artist until it reads Album by Artist.
*One cover, too many tracks*
The iPod (and iTunes to a lesser extent) conflates two or more albums with the same title, most obviously with *Greatest Hits*. On the iPod this can result in one album acting as a combination of two or more. Selecting any cover gives all the tracks of all albums with the same title. The workaround for this "Greatest Hits" bug is to give each album a unique title - I tend to go for *Album - Album Artist* as this reads clearly in the iTunes browser. Alternatively you could use the wording as it appears on the cover or append different numbers of spaces for each different album. Somewhat oddly, setting different values for Sort Album doesn't work.
*Missing Artist or Album not with others by same artist*
iTunes relies on the Gracenote CDDB database when identifying CD's. This often marks collections or anthologies of an artist's work as a compilation. In iTunes, however, the compilation flag has the logical function of grouping together tracks with the same album name, but different artists on each track, e.g. "Now That's What I Call Metal 666!". These compilations are then all grouped together at the end of cover flow. Most of us however, would expect "Greatest Hits" albums to be listed with the other albums by the same album artist. For albums which are essentially by a single album artist or group it is best to set the appropriate value for the album artist and clear the compilation flag.
*One album, too many covers*
For true compilations, where each track is by a different artist, the answer is to set the compilation flag to true and enable the iTunes preference to *Group compilations when browsing*. If the album is not a compilation however, any tracks which list guest artists may be treated as separate items. Filling in the Album Artist field is enough to link things in iTunes. Sadly, however, the iPod ignores the Album Artist field when grouping albums so this is only a partial solution. You can simply mark the entire album as a compilation which seems to be the way iTMS handles it, however that's not an ideal fix. Short of waiting for Apple to address this issue (and as far as I can tell it goes back to the 1st gen. of iPods) we need a workaround. What I do is to put any additional artist info. in square brackets after the song name. E.g. *Track \[Feat. Guest\]* and then set *Artist=Album Artist* for each track. For anthologies where the Album Artist is credited as part of another group, e.g. for Cream tracks on an Eric Clapton anthology, I use *Track \[As Group\]*. For a track where the main Album Artist doesn't receive a credit, e.g. the first track of the Slim Shady LP credited to Jeff Bass, I just set the track name to *Track \[Guest\]* while still setting the artist to the album artist. N.b. I use square brackets to indicate that this is information about the track as distinct from the song title and also use this style for Mix/Live/Bonus info.
*One album, still too many covers*
iTunes may split albums into two or more sections if some tracks from the album have different values for Artist, Album Artist, Album, No. of Discs or Part of a Compilation. Tiny differences such as trailing spaces, accented characters or variants of symbols can sometimes be quite hard to spot. The iPod is also more sensitive to case variations and may split or reorder an album that looks okay in iTunes. Normally overtyping the desired value for each shared field will complete the grouping of the album into one entity. Occasionally, however, this method seems to fail. When this happens I've found that you can force every field to update properly by adding some extra text - e.g. a trailing X, which once applied seems to complete the joining of the tracks into one album. Once this has happened the extra data can be removed and the album should remain properly grouped.
*Tried that, there are STILL too many covers!*
The Sort Artist, Sort Album & Sort Album Artist fields can be used to override the normal sort order. For example iTunes automatically drops leading articles (a/an/the) so "The Beatles" are arranged under "B" instead of "T". Occasionally different tracks from the same album can have different values in these sort fields which can also break up the grouping. Making the sort columns visible in iTunes can help with spotting & correcting such problems.
*One cover for multi-disc album*
Multi-disc albums are often listed as *Album (CD1)* for CD 1, *Album (CD2)* for CD 2 etc. To display these properly using just one cover, each disc should have the correct *Disc X of Y* values set, and then the entire album should be given the single title Album. Being somewhat obsessive I also renumber the tracks sequentially, working backwards from the last track (so that no two tracks ever have the same number) until I reach disc 1. BTW You can still give the individual discs different artwork should it be relevant so that the correct artwork will be displayed as the album progresses.
*One artist, many names*
With some artists, particularly classical composers, you should be aware of alternative representations of their names. E.g. 2Pac vs. Tupac. The menus will work best if for each artist you standardise on just one form of their name. E.g. make a choice between Mozart, W.A. Mozart or Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and then apply it consistently. For classical music I tend also to use the Composer as the Artist & Album Artist and either discard the performer details or place these into the Comments field.

  • Multiple artists with same tracks but iTunes library is sane

Ok, so I have a problem with multiple artists on my iPod. I know this has been discussed a lot before, but I haven't seen this actual problem yet. The problem is I don't get just one or two multiple cases, we're talking like 20-30 multiple instances of the same spelling of an artist and with all the same tracks listed when you select each multiple instance, however the iTunes library appears to be fine. I've tried resetting the iPod, restoring the iPod, and nothing. Anyone have any ideas?

What you can try is to convert the song that appears on your iPod. This creates another file of the same song. Find the song that shows up multiple times on your iPod and right click the song. Choose the option "Convert to AAC" or somthing close to that. After converting, there will be two songs listed on your iTunes library. Delete the old song, and keep the new one that you just created. And if this problem still persists, then you have to delete that song and get another copy of that song elsewhere.

  • Multiple albums on ipod even though itunes only has 1

    Hi,
Please help, I've been downloading my CD collection using iTunes and when I sync it to my ipod (7th Gen) there are multiple albums with the same name and songs(14 on some occasions) even though when I check in iTunes there is only one. This problem is not just related to one album but 5, the one thing they do have in common is similar album names i.e. Circus and The Circus, Greatest Hits and The Greatest Hits.
Coincidentally, Circus has 14 tracks and duplicated 14 times ??????
I've searched online and tried to find a solution but unfortunately not found anything which helps.
I'm tempted to reset the Ipod and start syncing all the songs but there is over 6000 and hoping there maybe a simpler solution.
    Regards
    Andy

iTunes and iPod have slightly different rules for ordering and grouping content. In particular the iPod does not observe Album Artist, each may have different settings for how to treat compilations, and inconsistencies in certain fields can have unexpected results, such as generating multiple covers for the same album.

  • Multiple artists on iPod

Several artists show up multiple times on my iPod even though they don't show up more than once on my iTunes, even in browse mode. I have checked each of them for spaces and small differences in the artist name that would cause this. They're all correct, and all songs for that artist show up under every entry. I have also checked the Sort Artist information, which is correct and the same for all of them. I tried restoring my iPod and re-syncing. Nothing has worked so far.

See Grouping tracks into albums. There will be a minor discrepancy of some kind, probably in Capitalization, you just have to find and eliminate them.

  • Artwork will not appear on my Ipod, only in Itunes??????

I had artwork working on my Ipod (60 Gig Video) and added some mp3's with artwork. I noticed that the new tunes still did not have the artwork so I added it again. I do the addition of mp3's manually because of hard drive space and manually add the artwork. Anyway, still no artwork on the Ipod. Now after searching to see what happened, I now have no artwork on the Ipod at all! But when I open Itunes and select music under my device, all the mp3's have the artwork showing under info. So artwork is there when I check the song in Itunes but not displayed on my Ipod. Can anyone help with this? It must just be a setting or something dumb.

Thanks for the heads up. I guess I will have to wait for the next update because I won't be restoring to orignal settings anytime soon. I have over 6000 mp3's listed by album with all the correct tracks, artist, year, and up till tonight, artwork. About 5 to 6 month's of work! Was proud to show people the setup I had. Now I'm just ****** off. I hope they fix the problem and all I will have to do is update the artwork. Pain but not a big problem. Please let me know if you find any type of fix.

  • Playlist song order doesn't list correctly in iPod, only in iTunes

I have a "Most Played" Smart Playlist that always shows in my iPod in the order that they are most played. Recently I bought two CDs that I imported into iTunes and put into my iPod and have been listening to it non stop ever since. Because of this I have a lot of new songs that rank very high in playcount. When my iPod is hooked up to my computer, iTunes shows the Most Played playlist with the new songs in the right order within the playlist, but when I disconnect the iPod and look in that playlist, the new songs with the high play counts appear all together at the end of the list! This drives me crazy, as I'm kind of a nut when it comes to play counts lol, but I don't know how to fix it. I haven't done anything different with regards to my iPod preferences and controls and don't understand why the song order is not as it appears in iTunes. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

  • Same Artist Listed Multiple times on iPod..

Before anyone tells me about changing the artist info of the song, I know about that. The problem is not the file info, I haven't changed the artist's info in about 6 months but all of sudden, on my iPod only not iTunes, the same artist is listed about 10 times. I only have one album of the artist on my iPod, and like I said the files haven't been edited in months. I know its not a serious problem, but it is annoying scrolling through the same artist and I am hoping my iPod is becoming corrupted. Anyone experience the same problem?

    Hmm...same here.
I had posted my question under the itunes post about a week ago and heard nothing back.
In my case, after the recent update I added a new album to an aready existing artist in my iTunes, synced and the next time I used the ipod , I noticed it had the same Artist 3 times, identical playlist, album tiltes, and tracks!
I've unchecked the artist, synced, and as expected they go from the ipod.
I check them back on and they appear 3 times again after syncing.
The only thing I have yet to do is a total restore. But with 60gigs of video audio and photos, its a bit of a pain!
Im getting very wary of these Itunes updates, remember the infamous -48 error that had every one baffled for about a month?
In my case the artist in question is New Order. I've renamed all my NO tracks to New Order2 as the artist, synced and the artist comes up twice!
I've renamed them back to 'New Order' and clicked on 'Album artist' to be 'New Order' also and re synced and I get back 3 in the list!!!

  • When an album has multiple artist how can you make them show up on an iPod Touch 4G? I can find an artist using the search function but they don't show up in the artist view on my iPod. iTunes shows them OK when you sort by artist.

Tech support seemed to understand the question but had no answer. Why would an album with only one artist show the artist but an album with multiple artist not show any of them. The album art show various in iTunes. That makes sense but on my iPod I would expect to see all artists.

Wish I did. I tried the group function but that didn't help in iTunes. The search function is the best I came up with. I can answer the question do you have susch and such artist. But I can't browse for an artist I don't remember exactly or have misspelled. Fortunately I don't think I've bought anything from iTunes that i already had. If you can't see an artist it's possible you think you don't have something you actually do have. Sorry, still hoping for a better work around or better yet a fix.

  • Ipod only lists songs, no artists, will not mount or appear in itunes

Looking for some assitance: have a 5g ipod with multiple problems that was given to me to fix by a friend. First problem: It is a windows formatted ipod and it is not recognized in windows or by itunes. The ipod plays the songs stored on it (it's not completely dead), however, when plugged in via usb the ipod will not show up as a drive or in itunes. I have followed every piece of advice on how to fix a problem like this from this forum, apple support and other forums, but nothing has worked. The battery shows that it is receiving a charge from the machine, but it is not recognized.
The second problem is that the ipod will not show artist or album, only songs. If I select artist from the menu, it shows me only song titles. Same thing for Albums. very strange. I believe it may have something to do with the version (1.0) that i see in Settings/About menu, but I don't know enough to say for sure. I've tried running the ipod updater, but it does not recognize the ipod either.
    Can anyone help?
    5g Ipod   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

camoracer, you are right, there is no fault to cause the ipod not to show trackdata, so it must not have been put on there,
    back to the big problem:
Id say a number of things it could be:
USB CABLE (try a different cable)
USB PORT (try a different port)
DRIVER (make sure the ipod drivers are installed0
And as a final try, put the ipod in hardware disk mode ( centre button and menu [ipod resets] as soon as it has started to reset press centre button and play/pause together, a tick should appear See:http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651 for more info.)
and see if it shows up then.

  • Methods to turn multiple artist songs into 1 artist for search on ipod/itun

I am trying to take some of my CDs with songs that have multiple artists and only have the main artist appear on my iPod when I go to Music->Artists.
For example: 50 Cent; most of his songs have multiple artists.
On my iPod when I go to Music->Artists I see
    50 Cent/Olivia
    50 Cent/Tony Yayo
    50 Cent; Eminem
    50 Cent; Eminem; Lloyd Banks
    etc...
I want all these songs to only be under their main artist being 50 Cent. I would like to go to Music->Artists and see only 50 Cent instead of this list of artists.
There is a solution to this where you just swap the Artist field with the Album artist so you still retain the multiple artist information. I am anal and would like to keep the fields how they are, is there a way around this?
I would also prefer a fast method as I do not like having to select one song at a time and going to getInfo to change swap the fields.

Have you had a look at this troubleshooting page? It may be of some help: Why aren't songs with the same album art grouped together

Yeah I would like to create a Playlist with the by me best rated songs of selected artists i know i can have playlists with multiple artists but that is only possible if i tick match any so that it takes all the songs of those artists and if i select match all there is no song in the playlist...

    Bilu,
It is a little tricky, but it can be done by using nested rules.  The playlist pictured below will do what you want:  all songs by the named artists, as long as the song has 4 or 5 stars.
Note:  The ellipsis ("...") button is used to nest a rule.  It appears automatically on Windows, but on the Mac you have to use the Option key.

  • Our family has multiple products from IPods, IPads, IMac, and Apple TV. However, we made a mistake when registering them so that we seem to have at least two different ITunes accounts. How do I combine them or reset the accounts to make them one?

Over the years we have purchased multiple products from IPods, IPads, to IMacs. Unfortunately, along the way, we accidentally created more than one ITunes accounts so that we can only access some songs etc on certain devices and not on others. How do we reset our devices to create one account or transfer our music to one account?

You don't. You cannot combine iTunes accounts at this time. Pick the one that you want to use and stick to that one account for all the purchases.

  • TS1412 My iPod shuffle periodically skips across multiple songs...playing a song or two and then jumping forward or back multiple songs after playing only moments of a song. Please tell me what I can do to fix this. Thanks

My iPod shuffle periodically skips across multiple songs...playing a song or two in full and then jumping forward or back multiple songs after playing only moments of a song. Please tell me what I can do to fix this situation. Thank you very much.

This is in regards to a 4th gen 40gb clickwheel ipod.
Hi, i've also been having a very similar problem with my ipod as well. I find that regardless of which windows-based pc i use (either my xp laptop @ home, or my win2000 desktop @ work) windows and itunes refuses to recognise my ipod. In windows explorer it will show it as a removable drive, but if i click on it, windows freezes. If I try to disconnect it, I cant because windows keeps reporting that 'the device is being used, try disconnecting later' and so then i shut down my laptop to disconnect it safely.
Lately, like you, i've also noticed that clicking sound it makes. It happens when i connect my ipod to my computer - like the drive inside it is constantly restarting or something, and i get it when i'm playing / charging it in my dock. I've also noticed that when it's playing whilst charging, it just freezes on a song, then skips a couple of songs.
I've just discovered the disgnostic tools on my ipod, so i think i'll run a couple of tests (ie HDD scan) and depending on the outcome, i'll go visit the apple store.

  • How do I sort so that all the songs for a particular album show up under only one album? Example:  Eminem 'Encore'  has multiple artists on the entire track list.

Example:  Eminem 'Encore'  has multiple artists on the entire track list.  Several songs will just list Eminem as the artist, but a lot will have Eminem, FEATURING...so and so.  Each song that has "FEATURING" shows up as a different album, so if you are not paying attention, and pull all the songs from a particular album over to your ipod, for example, and you don't see that not all the songs are there, you won't get them all to transfer.
Is there anyway to correct this?

Each tune gets a file name - that is how iTunes works. iTunes is a data base manager.
In a PlayList a reference is created that will link to a specific tune.
You can take the tunes that you do not want listed under a particular album name and change the album name using 'Get Info' for that tune(s) from the iTunes window.
