90 mins not really 90 mins?

Hey everyone -
I'm new to compressor, I've previously used a hardware encoder, and I'm trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong in this program.
I've read not to use the Export to Compressor from FCP because it's buggy, so I will first export a self contained quicktime file from FCP. I'll then close FCP, and open compressor and import that quicktime file. (Oh, by the way, I have a project that is 87 minutes long.)
I'll choose the preset settings for "DVD Best Quality - 90 Minutes - 4:3". My brain says that this would be what I would want, since I have 87 minutes of video (and audio) that I want to fit on a DVD. So I choose "All" so I get an Aiff file, Dolby 2.0 audio file, and MPEG 2 file. I don't care about the Dolby 2.0 audio file, I just want the aiff file, so I'll delete the Dolby setting. So, in other words, I have one 87 minute file that's ready to be encoded in 2 forms: MPEG2 and AIFF. So I hit start.
A couple hours later, I'll come back to the computer, and yay, it's finished. When I import those files into DVD studio Pro however, I notice that the disc space meter says these files will take 5.7 GB! That's a full GIG over the limit of a DVD... Not to mention that I haven't created my menu yet.
So... Why doesn't the "90 minute" setting do what it's supposed to?
I tried a different project too. This one was 68 minutes. I again used the 90 minute setting, deleting the dolby audio. This one DOES fit on a DVD, though just barely, registering in DVD studio pro as 4.5 GB, again with no menus. After burning this DVD, I'll watch it, and wow, it looks pretty crummy. Stills look fine, but any motion is very artifact-y around the motion parts.
I've tried to find answers in the manual, this forum, and others. But I can't seem to figure out what I'm doing wrong. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Unless your married to PCM audio (aka AIFF) then using Dolby 2.0 is a better route. By using a lower audio bitrate such as Dolby 2.0 (aka AC3) then you can feed your video more bits.
I am assuming you just laid the presets on there and clicked submit. The presets in Compressor are a decent place to start, not necessairly to finish. Open up the inspector and tweak your settings. You may try a VBR instead of a CBR. Try changing your motion estimation from "Better" to "Best." With the room created by going to AC3 audio you can give bits to the video. So can bump those up as well.
It always helps to tell what type of footage it is: talking head, sports, landscape shots. Knowing what type of footage you are compressing can determine many of your settings. Footage with low motion or redundant images (i.e. talking head) does not need a bit rate of 7.0Mbps. But if its high action footage like sports or car chases then you need all the Mbps you can get.

Have you activated the device yet? Is it up and running?
Many of us in this community are your age and older. Age has nothing to do with it, but your lack of experience with tech devices has more bearing on this than your age. However, having said that, the iPad is very easy to use. You don't need a computer at all any more in order to use an iPad.
If you do want to use your laptop with your iPad, you must be running the latest version of iTunes and these are the specific requirements.

Why does the iPad Mini not have music play count?

I bought an iPad Mini and also have a macbook. I had listened to various music on my iPad Mini the other day, however when I connected the iPad Mini to the Macbook and iTunes via the lightning connector to sync, it synced the ratings I gave the songs I listened to on the mini, but no play count, as if I had not listened to anything. I hope there is something I can do about this as I often look at my play count!!

It should work work but these kind of bugs pop up between updates, both hardware and software. Try closing all apps in the recently used list on the iPad. Double tap the Home button, tap and hold one of the icons at the bottom till they wiggle then tap the to close them. Tap the Home button to get back to the Home screen then hold the sleep button till you see the slide to power off message. Once it has powered down completely hold the Sleep button till the Apple icon appears.

Many people including myself rely on playcounts to control smart playlist to manage large libraries. Smart playlists can be created to show your most or least played tracks and used more or less as your favorites or other uses. Along with playcounts the date is transferred so to keep a fresh list of music on my smaller iPods a smart playlist set to songs not played in the last month keeps some fresh tunes on it.
Playcounts are also used to manage Podcasts in iTunes to delete older episode. Bookmarks, which can also be effected by this, can mess up audiobooks, movies and podcast playback between different devices. So yes, it does matter.

Having problems with my ipod mini
1st. it wouldnt updload it only uploaded 10 songs then 57 then 173 and then 220 and then it froze (i know how to restart it) i have 800 songs that need to be uploaded
2nd. my computer wont recognize it i wanted to restore it but the computer wouldnt recognize it it kept on saying to plug in ipod to update
3rd. i keep on seeing "delayed write failed" everytime i connect my ipod
this window pop out when i connect my ipod and it says "ipod not readable" window poping out so i could update it but the computer wont recognize it

i got a new mini. i had iTunes v6.0.2.23 installed but it won't show up in itunes. windows detects the ipod but not in itunes. so i tried the 5Rs. nothing happens. updated itunes to the latest version (v6.0.4.2). still won't detect my mini. restored the mini. nothing happens. restarted the pc a couple of times already. nothing. someone please help. it's not the cable or the port cuz my 5g works well on it. this is really frustrating. btw my mini's version is 1.4.1.

[SOLVED] Screen problem with HP 2133 mini-note

Hello Archers!
First of all, a HUGE thank you to the Arch Community – I've been using Arch on my desktop for five years, and between the forum and the wiki, have been able to solve/fix every issue so far without needing to post a question. Now I'm stuck....
I inherited this HP 2133 mini-note netbook running Win XP, so (naturally) I immediately blanked it to install Arch. Using the 2013.03.01-dual.iso on a USB stick, I booted to the syslinux loader: HDT and memtest worked, so I booted arch i686. Everything proceeds normally, but when the command line comes up (root@archiso, I believe), it's only visible for a split second and then the screen blanks, and starts changing colors – the whole screen goes solid white, then grey, red, blue, green, some king of black-and-white columns – and Alt+F* does nothing. I can't get to a tty. (From here on, I'll just refer to this as “screen issue” because it's the same every time).
I loaded Ubuntu 12.04 onto the USB stick and it booted fine – the Live environment worked, and it installed fine as well. That being the case, I followed these instructions (method 2) and successfully installed Arch from the Ubuntu LiveUSB environment.
After rebooting into my new Arch install, the same screen issue starts, but it starts while the systemd messages are flying by, before I get to a command line. Happens in both regular and fallback mode, but here's the (possible) good news: I can blindly log in as root and issue
# systemctl reboot
and it works! It seems that my system is there, and the screen issue is just graphical.
This netbook has a VIA chipset, which I know is a huge pain, and I know I'll need the openchrome drivers for X, but X is not involved here – in the fresh install, X isn't even present in the system yet. So I wrote down everything I could from the HDT at boot, went back into the Ubuntu LiveUSB, mounted and chrooted into Arch, and added the following to the mkinitcpio.conf modules array:
MODULES="via via_agp sata_via viafb i2c_viapro
and then issued
# mkinitcpio -p linux
After rebooting, I still get the same screen issue, but even earlier – instead of halfway through systemd's messages, it starts right after “running early hook udev”. I can still (after waiting until I'm sure the command prompt is availabe) blindly log in as root and issue “systemctl reboot.”
I'm totally out of ideas – perhaps it's just that I need certain boot parameters, or something else in my kernel line in syslinux.cfg (which right now is just the default “ro”) but I know almost nothing about these topics since they've never been a problem on my desktop. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I really don't want to run Ubuntu on this thing (no offense to the Ubuntu community intended) I just want my Arch!

Well I'm an idiot and the answer was staring me in the face in my own post: if adding those modules to mkinitcpio.conf made the issue start earlier, maybe one of them is the problem.
Passing "modprobe.blacklist=viafb" to the kernel at boot (by pressing TAB at the syslinux menu and appending it to the end) did the trick, both on the installed system and for the archiso install media. Marking as solved.

IPod Mini not connecting

Hello all. I'm not really good with computers so please bear with me.
This is my second iPod actually. It's a refurbished version that I purchased September 2005 after my other Mini had to get junked because I wasn't about to pay $200 to get it fixed.
It's been working fine since I got it but about two days ago it took longer than usual to connect to my computer. It finally did after about the second try and I was relieved. Yesterday I tried to update it again and my computer would not recognize the Mini AT ALL.
It keeps saying that my USB port doesn't recognize anything and could this possibly be a problem with the USB port? I've also just gotten the new iTunes updates along with the new updates for my Mini and have recently gotten updates for my PC as well.
And whenever I connect my Mini to the computer it also says DO NOT DISCONNECT but a few seconds later it comes up with the OK TO DISCONNECT sign. So that kind of leads me to believe that there is in fact a problem with the Mini. But honestly, I really don't know anything about this stuff.

First of all, with your iPod connected, try resetting it. It may take several attempts. Also, try other usb ports on your computer.
Then, if that doesn't work look here.

Still trying to connect old MacBook to TV via HDMI not a mini display

It is not a mini display port and it will go to HDMI. Looks like about 14 pins or so.

The external screen would show what is on the internal screen only if mirroring is enabled. Otherwise, the external screen will show another portion of an extended desktop (or an entirely separate space, depending on other settings).
Just what do you mean when you say "My TV menu will then move at a much slower rate and not match screens."? What does show on the TV screen?

Sorry, but you need iTunes 11 which requires OS 10.6 or higher and a Mac with an Intel processor. In other words, you need a newer Mac.

ADI Sound Drivers for Mini Note 2133 Netbook

Have just spent a day removing Linux and installing Windows XP pro on a new Mini Note 2133 Netbook, downloaded all the relevant XP Drivers prior to installing XP, after installation run all the HP Drivers with no problem - Except the ADI Sound Drivers, on running this driver installation it will only let me install it on the C: Drive, I have installed Windows XP on the E: Drive and left the C: drive with Linux, each time I run the ADI Driver it automatically tries to install on the C: drive, it fails because C: drive is not part of the XP installation. All other HP Drivers for the MIni Note, pause and prompt for where you want to install the driver, the ADI driver does not. So the mini note runs fine with XP but no sound. Any ideas what I can do to correct this prob.

No way to know for certain. Apple.com shows the ipad mini (not retina) as having ios 7. If you are purchasing from a retail store, it will depend on if the device has been upgraded yet.

I have a similar issue with battery charging.
HP Battery check tool was showing for old battery status: Replace (40), Current State: Charging (0%)
So I have purchased new battery...
Now HP Battery check shows same for the new battery:
Replace (40),Current State: Charging (0%)
Computer is HP Mini 110 3010sq
BIOS is updated and computer is working fine with AC adaptor plugged, but shuts dow immediatelly after disconnecting it from AC adaptor.
I have noticed status for "cell voltage 4" is 0 mV for both batteries.
What could be the problem here?
Any support is appreciated.
