[915 Series] BIOS INDICATES MASTER DRIVE ON PRIMARY IDE IS ON THIRD IDE MASTER

Hope someone can explain this one...
I have one hard drive installed on the primary ide channel of the motherboard and the bios recognizes it at the master on the third ide channel.
Specs: Intel P4 3.0 (LGA 775) Prescott on a MSI 915P/G Combo motherboard w/1gig of ram.
Setup: Three ide channels (connectors) on the motherboard...primary (blue), secondary and third (yellow)
My hard drive is connected to the primary (blue) and jumped as master, optical drives are on the second and third channels both jumped as masters (because they're on seperate channels, no sharing of the cables)
When I First installed the hard drive, without the optical drive installed yet, the bios said it was on the third channel and set as master even though it was installed on the primary (first channel) with nothing installed on the first or second channels....after I installed the optical drives on the second and third channels....the bios still shows the hard drive installed as the third, with nothing on the first and second channels.
I have the lates bios and drivers installed and Windows XP shows the hard drive as disk 0 (first).
I have built enough systems and installed many hard drives to see this is not normal and I think this has to do with why my system is going through an abnormally slow boot proccess (my emachine celeron 1.8 with half the memory is booting about twice as fast...emachine faster with more startup programs running....this is just wrong...lol)
If anyone has an explanation or solution for this...please reply...thank you.

Get your motherboard manual and look at the IDE ports you put in, they belong to the external embedded IDE RAID VIA6410 controller.
First thing first, you need to enable VIA6410 as IDE (not RAID) in your BIOS. It may NOT support Optical drives. If it can, then it's good. But if really cannot, then you have to share your optical drives with one cable on the "IDE3" which your HDD is currently resided. And, put your HDD at either of the 2 IDEs of VIA6410.
Now... the reason why your HDD is in IDE3 because SATA 1,2,3,4 are taking the IDE1 and IDE2.

  • BIOS indicates hard drive in 3rd Drive position

I replaced the hard drive and the BIOS indicates the hard drive (both the old and the new) is in the 3rd Drive position. The 1st and 2nd Drive position indicate "None".  It indicates the cd drive is in 4th Drive position.  There are no SATA drive sockets for 1st and 2nd Drive position.  Instructions for recovery say the hard drive must be in 1st or 2nd Drive position.
    Any help here?

Here is the motherboard layout for your system.
Notice that there are four SATA connectors labeled SATA1 thru SATA4 [lower right]
Connect your hard drive to SATA1

  • [925 Series] Bios and Optical Drives Problem

I recently just built my computer and assembled all the parts, but when i plugged in everything and started it, the screen would stay blank and the bios would not come up. ur optical drives' jumpers set correctly?

  • [915 Series] 915p Neo2 HDD/Optical Drive Setup

I have a system as stated in signature with the two hard drives on a single cable and both set for Cable Select.  I also have two optical drives on a single cable both set for Cable Select.  When HDD cable is in IDE1 (blue connector) and CD-ROM cable is in IDE2, WinXP will run and recognize all four drives.  However, I cannot boot from a CD.  If I reverse the cables the CD will load, but will tell me I have no HDD.
Initially, to load XP I had one CD-ROM in cable position master and an HDD in cable position slave, other wise I got a message "no system found" or "Win could not find a HDD".
I have reviewed several posts and have not been able to find a solution.  Everything works fine when in normal operation (booting from HDD) but when booting from proprietary softwhere on CD which can't be loaded on an HDD & must be loaded from the CD, I have to open the machine and swap cables and both I and my cable connectors are getting tired of this approach.
The BIOS tells me that I am using VIA VT6410 Raid BIOS Ver. 4.50 and with the HDD cable connected to IDE2 it lists the two drives as None Raid Primary Master & Slave.

Best to have your boot HDD as master on primary IDE with second HDD as slave on Primary IDE.  Put burner as master on secondary IDE with cdr as slave to it.
Cable select is known to give problems in a lot of instances.  Best to use master/slave jumper settings.

  • My only hard drive in the PC displays as, Sixth IDE Master..Why? It works Slow 2

I currently have only 1 thats connected to the PC
For some odd reason when I start the PC the screen tells me its the Sixth IDE Master drive
and my CDRW and DVDRW roms display as Primary IDE Master and Slave
The CDRW and DVDRW are connected to IDE1 in the motherboard
and my Hard drive is connected to IDE2 as the Master drive and IDE3 slot is empty
So my question is.. How can I make it display as Secondary IDE Master?
I changed the option in BIOS from IDE to RAID.. I'm not sure what RAID does.. but when I see the RAID screen when the computer starts up it shows my hard drive as non-Raid, maybe I have to install drives for the HD? I have noticed my HD runs way slower than when I connected it to IDE1, the reason it's not connected to IDE1 but IDE2 is because my cd-roms have to be connected there, IDE1 is the closest to them and I don't have a long enough IDE cable to reach them from IDE2 since that slot is all the way down on the mobo..
I'm running a 3.4gh P4 PC with 1gb ram on an MSI 925X Neo mobo
Any more info you guys need?

IDE1 will give you Primary Master and Slave.
IDE2 belongs to the embedded VIA6410 IDE/RAID controller. You need to have its driver installed then only you can get the fullspeed of it, otherwise it will run slow.
2ndary IDE master belongs to the SATA ports. There are 4 ports of SATA and SATA doesn't hav eMaster and Slave. So it will take out 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th IDE. So... VIA6410 becomes 6th IDE
Everything else is OK. I suggest you put your main HDD, the one with OS installed at IDE1. And your not-so-frequently-accessed drives like the optical drives, put on IDE2/IDE3 on VIA6410. This will help speeding up everything.

  • Need inputs regarding the dvd drive on primary ide channel.

    Specs:
    Motherboard: MSI P35 Neo3 (MS-7935 1.0)
    CPU: Intel Core2 Duo E6550
Memory: Team Elite DDR2800 (2x1GB Dual Channel)
Hard drive: Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500GB 32MB Cache (SATA)
Optical drive: LG GSA-H55L (IDE only) Firmware version 1.02
    Graphics card: Gecube HD3870
    Chipset: Intel P35/G33/G31 (Rev. A2)
    Southbridge: Intel 82801IB (ICH9)
    LPCIO: Fintek F71882F
    BIOS: AMI V1.1 (11/07/2007)
    Hello,
Almost all new motherboards today only have a primary ide channel and the rest are SATA.
I need inputs regarding the dvd drive which is shown in device manager as located on the primary ide channel while the hard drive is located on the secondary channel. Because I would like to update the dvd drive to the latest firmware (version 1.06; to be able to recognize more blank media) but the LG site recommends that the drive (dvd) be located on the secondary ide channel.
I already tried to uninstall every channel from the device manager but all would still be the same after reboot, dvd drive on primary, hard drive on secondary.
Current ide mode in BIOS is set to AHCI+IDE mode, DMA modes are fine (UDMA4 for dvd, UDMA5 for hard drive), boot sequence (1st=HD, 2nd=DVD, 3rd=Floppy drive)
Tried switching to IDE mode only in BIOS but would not detect the optical drive. Never tried RAID+IDE mode since I only have a single hard drive.
I'm not sure but if I try to update the firmware, it might instead try to update the hard drive's firmware instead of the optical drive and make the hard drive unusable.
I would like to know if anybody with this same situation was able to successfully update the optical drive's firmware or is there some way to place the optical drive on the secondary ide channel and the hard drive on primary for me to follow and replicate the process.
    Thank you for any replies.

Thanks sir NovJoe for the reply.
Just received the solution from another forum where I posted the same problem.
They said that the flash program for the firmware will detect the drive on its own and would not flash other devices except the optical drive itself. So its pretty safe, and I can confirm this since I just flashed my ODD a little over a while ago and everything went fine. No errors.
Though I'm speaking for the brand of ODD I own and may be different for other brands so take precautions as well. It may be different for the others.

  • [915 Series] Motherboard Suggestion Request (P4 840 D)

I am looking for any recomendation on a motherboard.  I am looking at purchasing the Intel P4 840D processor and I want to know what MB would be a good one.  I would like to find one with AGP as my video card is AGP, or would it be best to eat the card and upgrade to PCI-Express?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.  (Also is SATA backward compatible to IDE so I can re-use my IDE HDD?)

Don't pick up any 915 series boards for P4 840D. You should pick 945, 955 and 975X boards instead. Go for Intel chipset boards, don't go for NForce4's as yours is a Pentium D.
Do you have a 550W power supply?
SATA is not compatible with IDE. For IDE, you must plug into an IDE port, you can't plug to a SATA port. But the good thing is, you don't need any driver for SATA.
You must go for PCIe card as these boards only support PCIe.

    Changes Done:
    In  "PUB Master Case" BC,
The Team field is an MVF. I have changed the MVL from "Contact/Position" to "PUB Master Case/Position" which is identical to HLS Case/Position.
Set the Business Component User Property: "MVG Set Primary Restricted: Position" to "False"
    Observation:
The Business Component has 'BusComp View Mode' set with Owner Type 'Position' and Visibility MVLink 'Position'.
The "PUB Master Case - Cases View" View has two applets "PUB Master Case Form Applet" and "PUB Master Case - Cases List Applet". Both has MVF 'Team' with "Contact Team Mvg Applet" as the Mvg Applet.
"PUB Master Case Form Applet" belongs to "PUB Master Case" BC and "PUB Master Case - Cases List Applet" belongs to "HLS Case" BC.
I am able to change the primary in "PUB Master Case - Cases List Applet"

  • My Master Drive @ 10.4.8 won't boot up now - It auto boots to Backup Drive

As of this morning when I booted up to my Master SATA drive (10.4.8) my secondary ATA drive (Backup OS 10.4) came up instead. This happened before several weeks ago and when I just restarted it booted up with the correct Master drive instead. This time its not happening and the strange thing is when I restart under the Start Disk preference panel with my Master drive highlighted it still boots with the backup drive instead.
Back in Dec 2006 I installed an
ACARD AEC-6290M Serial ATA (SATA) 2 Channel PCI Controller Card
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/ACARD/AEC6290M/\
for a new Seagate 400GB SATA drive (Mac friendly retail box version)
At that time I also upgraded the standard 400 MHz processor to
OWC Mercury Extreme [email protected] 2MB L3 Cache
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MEG42M1500/
Everything has been AOK until now. Can't imagine my ACARD is the problem being that I can still see my master drive when booted under my backup drive. I just can't boot to it and when I throw in a OS X Tiger Install Disk it doesn't see any OS on that drive at all.
The last update for anything that I did was iTunes 7.3 a few days ago.
Anybody have clue or good idea what it could be?
    PowerMac G4 400MHZ-upgraded to 1.5 GHZ thru OWC   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Have you tried going into Disk Utility, on your working drive, and see if you can run a repair on your main drive? Check your S.M.A.R.T status, on that drive, if you are able to see it in there.
Dr.Smokes Disk Utility link will show you how.
If you have DiskWarrior run that instead.
    Cheers!

  • Old MSI TV@nywhere and can I use TV@nywhere MAster driver???????

The driver for this card was aweful in 2002 and never updated. Buggy is an understatement. The remote always stopped working, Pvr was lousy, promised MPEG 4 was never implemented in code , essentially the driver on the original MSI TV@nywhere was never finished. The new driver looks alot better. If tv Master driver works on the old card I want to try reinstalling it.
    Thanks
P.S. If nobody has tried it I will and post the results.

you might find the tuner drivers will work, but as the Master card supports Stereo, the audio capture drivers won't work
if i were you i'd upgrade to a newer card; the TV@nywhere Plus is reasonably cheap

New iMac. Flash drive is primary for OS and apps.  I want to use my HD 2 (1 TB hard drive) for my bulky photo and music files.  Can I direct iPhoto and iTunes to use the larger hard drive as the primary target when importing?

Yes.  Unfortunately, I don't know the specifics because I don't use iPhoto anymore and I completely copied over 15 years of MP3 files recently when I installed 10.7.  Needless to say, I have not opened iTunes since and probably never will again - not because of iTunes but because of my stupidity.  I did have some of the files backed up but I hadn't backed up in a while.......anyway....
When I imported my CD's, I had them go directly to my external firewire.  I can't remember exactly how to set it, but in the preference section of iTunes you can specify an import destination to any drive that's available to your machine.  I did this with iPhoto as well way back at one point when I was using Tiger, but I don't remember the specifics on that either.  I can't imagine they would have discontinued support for that feature since then.
    Sorry I couldn't help more.

  • Hard drive issues...running out of ideas...opinions?

    Hello everyone!
Let me start by saying that I love all of my Apple products. I've been able to use an iPod mini, another iPod, an iPhone, a Powerbook G4 and a MacBook with no daily or otherwise recurring issue; however, the reason I now have a MacBook is because the Powerbook G4's hard drive died. Sad, but after 3 1/2 years of problem-free use in college...I could justify the upgrade.
I purchased the MacBook from my university at a nice discount back in March of this year (this was right after the newest batch was released). I was comforted by the fact that I'd more than likely have another 3-4 years before a replacement would be needed. Now, I'm not so sure...
One day last week, a tab that was opened in Safari froze up, and a song playing in iTunes began to hang. I attempted a force quit of both, but with no luck. Eventually I had no other option but to shut the computer down. Afterwards, I began getting the infamous flashing question mark upon booting back up. I realized that I'd probably had some damaged files as a result of the forced shut down, so I began working with Disk Utility/First Aid to correct the problem. Luckily, I had no important files or programs to worry about, so I went for the Erase option and hoped I could just re-install the OS.
Unfortunately it was not that easy. Now my hard drive is not showing up as Verified under the S.M.A.R.T. status, and the volume "disk1s2" will not mount. I tried everything I could find on these boards, still with no luck. So, I went for Disk Warrior today and crossed my fingers. When the menu finally loaded, there were 2 options in the drop down menu: the disk warrior cd, and an Unknown Drive. When I chose the latter, this is what I was met with:
Directory cannot be rebuilt due to disk hardware failure (-36,2268).
I'm almost convinced that I need a new hard drive. However, when I run the Apple Hardware Test, everything checks out fine. I ran it twice. Also, when I run a test on the hardware in Disk Warrior, I get this message:
This hard drive's built-in SMART diagnostics indicate the drive is functioning normally.
Now, with my old Powerbook G4, the hard drive doesn't even show up in Disk Utility. That I can understand. It needs to be replaced. But with this MacBook, all the tests indicate the hard drive is fine. The only blatent message about hardware failure I get is when I try rebuilding the directory with Disk Warrior. I know I'm probably just in denial, but when my computer is only 5 months old...I think I have the right.
So, what is your opinion? New hard drive for the 5 month old MacBook (grrr)? Or is there still hope left?

SMART diagnostics are by no means all-encompassing, so it's quite possible for a drive to pass SMART diagnostics but still be defective. My advice at this point would be to boot from the Installer, go to Disk Utility, and see if you can erase, or if that doesn't work re-partition (normally you'll choose to create a single partition) the drive. A badly corrupted disk catalog might not be reparable, but reformatting may work.
If that also fails, then the probability of the drive being defective is quite high and replacing it will probably be necessary. The tiny drives used in laptops are by nature of their very small components more prone to failure than are other drives, though as capacity and performance rise, even desktop drives are becoming more prone to breaking.
    Hope this helps.

  • Can I back up an external drive and an airbook with a third drive

I would like to back up an external drive and an airbook with a third drive.  This was the setup I used with my Imac.  The third drive was linked to the external drive which was linked to the imac.  I used time machine.  Both the third drive and the external drive were visible on the desktop of the imac.  Now I want to use this system to back up the airbook and the external drive, but the third drive doesn't appear on the airbook's desk top, in fact it is invisible and doesn't seem to be recognized in finder or anywhere else from the airbook.  Is there some distinction that prevents the airbook from allowing this back up configuration, but that allowed the imac to work in this configuration.
    Thanks,
    Daviiiiiiid

Of course, always that the external drive is formatted in “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)”. Apart from that, you shouldn't have any issue,
Then, open System Preferences > Time Machine > Options, and remove the external drive from excluded items. The next backup will include your external drive.
Note that you may not be able to back up the external drive if it's connected to your Time Capsule. If it doesn't work, connect the external drive to your computer
