[915 Series] MSI 915P 7058 Power On Problems

We have 11 identical computers.
MSI 915P 3.0 GHz P4 530J
1GB DDR2 400 (2x512)
160 GB Seagate SATA
nVidia 6600 PCX 128 MB
Antec case w/ 350W PS
The PS is only a has a 20 pin ATX plug where the board accepts 20 or 24.
BIOS versions 1.6 - 1.8(latest version)
Latest chipset driver also.
We have been getting feedback from the users that when booting, especially in the morning, they fail.  By this I mean the fans start, the power led is on and the hd led is on for a while.  But there is no video, the boot sequence never happens, and the os does not load.  To fix the problem, usually holding the power switch for >4sec, and then powering the computer on again works.    The reset also works to get past the failure.  Pushing the power button for <4 sec does not work.
We have tried the latest versions of the BIOS, no luck.  We are currently collecting the 4 led POST message from the back of the computer each time there is a problem.
I checked for the USB open channel problem.  The 10 pin connectors for the front and rear usb do not have the 10th pin grounded which has caused usb problems.
All other connections look OK.  The only other alert is that the power supply is the 20 pin and the mobo support 20 or 24.  Still it is an Antec 350W PS with 21A at +12V.
Any help would be great.
Thanks-
onesquin

A user is going to be gone tomorrow and we are going to try an antec 450W PSU in one of the machines.  That was our next step too.  I was hoping for something else as this fix is costly and time consuming.
We also tested the the gray wire on the power supply to make sure that it was always returning +5V.  We were able to produce the failure and the gray was at +5V.  We then grounded it and the computer would not start.
Maybe we just need a bigger PSU, but the manual only calls for a 350W, 18A on +12V.
Sorry for the double post... Composed the original message over 2 days and could not find it.  Then it was there after my second post.
Thanks-
scott

  • Msi p45 platinum power up problems

Hey guys, i have got a fairly new system i think its about 2 months old
    e8400 e0
    msi p45 platinum bios 1.71beta
    4g kit 1066 kingston hyperx
    palit 1g 4870
    huntkey 650w psu
Okay so heres the deal, the computer was running at 3.6ghz, stable for the past 2 months.
I have tried 4ghz with almost every possible combination of volts, but it passed prime 95 for about 36 hours 1 day, and the next have a random reboot
I also noticed that my psu was making this weird whining noise so i just ordered and installed a pc power and cooling 750w.
To my happyness comp booted up at 4ghz and seemd stable enough for 2 hours. (just searching net and stuff) then boom, comp turns off.
okay so i thought maybe it wasnt stable. tried to reboot but to no avail. all i get is about half a second when my fans try to spin up but then it just cuts off again.
i have tested the usual out of box, 1 stick of mem, clear cmos with power cord removed, removed battery for 10 minutes but nothing. Also did the same with the old psu which was working.
All that happends is it trys to start, eg leds everywhere flicker and i mean flicker there is no way i can see what order. Im refering to the 8 leds down the bottom. the flick on then off.
After trying to start it up once, i wont get another chance to start it. eg i have to remove the power and wait till the power is completly gone from the system b4 i can try again and only have the same thing happen.
    Thanks for your help guys

Something may have been damaged during overclocking.  What voltages did you work on when you overclocked the system to ~4GHZ?  What where your temperatures?

Next, I see that you are using a Beta BIOS, what's the reason behind it?
I suppose the reason is this:

  • MSI GS70 Stealth Power Button problem

I just got my gs70 stealth laptop. The power button keeps changing between orange and white almost every second. Am I missing some driver?
    Please help, thanks!

    Svet it correct.
Most likely there is something that is causing the computer to use the NVidia dedicated graphics card for less than a second, over and over. It could even be the monitoring program that is included with the NVidia drivers (to allow you to see what programs are accessing the video card, this will cause the card to get enabled as you describe over and over).

Check your power button connector to the mobo and see if it was fixed properly or you can try turning the connector 180 degrees around and fix it in and see if the same problem replicates.
Next you can also try to clear CMOS.
Check in your Power Management Options in Windows and check if there's any funny settings.
Thank you very much NovJoe for your kind attention and help.
Since I arrive home I'll try that.
i've  tried the connector of the power in the board of the 2 possible way with no result.
How can I clear the CMOS? nly with Jumpers isn't?
And what do you mean to say with funny settings in windos? Can you be more specific please?

  • MSI 915P/G Combo (MS-7058) Boot Issues

We have two production MSI 915P/G Combo (MS-7058) boards that for every 100 cold boots there is at least one cold boot that the system will hang. We tried many ATI PCIE graphics cards and even an Nvidia board with the same results. We tried toggling many bios settings to see if it will help but the problem still exists.
We believe this issue is solely related to the motherboard.
We are wondering if there has been any other members in the community that have seen this boot problem with this PCIE motherboard?? ..and what you did to fix it?
    Thanks.
    Reply to thread only.

QTec PSU are well known craps around the hardware places. Imagine a 550watts with only 18A on +12v... Try placing it side by side with another 550watts like Antec or Enermax, even Thermaltake has better specs amps.
Current Prescotts CPUs are well known Power buggers and heat buggers even that ha applied to the Prescott based Celeron D CPUs. Around 18A on +12v is just entry for Northwood B and C, and for Prescotts, around 20A on +12v is just the bare minimum to run just stable.
My current system used to run good on a +12v @ 18A, +5v @ 40A, +3.3v @ 20A PSU but craps up after 18 months when I threw in a FX5950Ultra, so instead of buying back a similar PSU, I opt for a more poweful PSU(Enermax Noisetaker 470w PFC2.0) that can last me long even if I'm using the LGA 775s, Socket T CPUs.

  • Can i install windows 8.1 on msi ms 7058 combo 915p?

    hello
i have a msi ms 7058 msi 915p combo and my cpu is intel pentium 4  perscot 3ghz 1 mb socket 775  .i have already used this cpu with windows 8.1
whitout any problem with other old mainborad(gigabyte AGP DDR1).but i cant install with this mainborad i cant find dvd writer suzuki in bios (ide) my
hard disk is maxtor ide i update bios but i cant find DVD driver but i can use this drive in windows 7.
Currently, I have the HDD drive (with jumper set to Master) connected directly to IDE port 1 w/o any other device on it.
I also have the DVD-RW drive (with jumper set to Master) connected directly to IDE port 2 w/o any other device on it.
At first, BIOS would not recognize my HDD as Primary IDE Master 1 but rather has Primary IDE Master 3.
It would not even recognize my DVD-RW at all.
Then, I proceeded to go to INTEGRATED PERIPHERALS -> SATA Devices Config -> Compatible -> PATA PRI, SATA SEC.
This finally allowed for it to recognize my HDD is my Primary IDE Master 1 but still no luck on even recognizing my DVD-RW at all.
At the moment, I do not know what else to do to try to get it to recognize my DVD-RW.
I'd appreciate any help or tips on how to solve this problem, thanks alot.

Does the latest bios-update contain previous versions?
Please help me , i want to upgrade my RAM and i can't find single sided memorys anywhere . Thank you in advance.

  • MSI NEW P.E. Series Video Card - GTX670 Power Edition 2GD5/OC with Twin Frozr 4

Glad to be back in the forum and I was been busy for awhile. By this time lots of PC hardware already came out especially from Nvidia. Just like today my share would be MSI's N670GTX PE 2GD5/OC video card.
First of all lets talk about the GTX670 GPU chip. This GPU is the younger sibling of GTX680 which uses the same 28nm GK104 chip but with one disabled shader cluster/core.The reference or standard GPU clock is 915Mhz with a turbo boost of 980 and as for the memory is concerned, it has a 256bit memory bus connected to a 2GB GDDR5 memory with speed of 6008Mhz. Just like with any Kepler based architecture, the card would also have all the goodies like "Adaptive V-Sync", "AA TXAA (Temporal Super Sampling)", supports "DX11.1" and improved 3D Vision Surround.
Moving on, let's check out now what MSI did with their GTX670 SKU based video card. The card is under a new Series named "Power Edition" (series comparison table below) and it comes factory overclocked from GPU clock of 915MHz to 1020MHz and Turbo boost of 980Mhz to 1080Mhz. It also comes with the 4th version of Twin Frozr Thermal Cooling design with a theme color of Black and Blue which matches the color of MSI's midrange to high-end motherboards as well. The dual 8cm PWM fan based cooler are equipped with Propeller Fan Blades which draws air better and now has the so called "Dust Removal Technology", basically as you startup your PC the fan will rotate counter clockwise for 30 seconds clearing the dust from the cooling heatsink. Adding a finishing touch, MSI equipped the video card with their Military Class III components ensuring the best performance, efficiency, higher overclocks and durability.
Additional Box Shots of the N670GTX PE OC
    MSI Series Comparison Table
New Power Edition Series which is a notch higher than the basic Twin Frozr Series.
Below are some other basic specs of the card which not been mentioned above.
    •CUDA Cores: 1344 Units
    •Output: DisplayPort / HDMI / DL-DVI-I / DL-DVI-D
    •Total Draw Power: 200W
    •Card Dimension: 267x117x38mm
    •DirectX: DX 11.1
    •OpenGL: 4.2
    •PCI Express: 3.0
    •SLI: 3-Way Capable
•3D Vision Surround: 3 Output per Single Card
    •Pure Video HD: Y
    •HDCP: Y
•Minimum Power Requirement: 550W with 38A for the +12V Rail
Actual shot of the Rear Ports
The card is powered up by additional 2x 6Pin power connectors.
    Five 8mm thick heatpipes design
In the future, there might be a GTX670 4GB GDDR5 version as you can see the empty spaces between the GPU memory chips

  • [915 Series] How much power?

How much power in watts does a MSI 915P Neo2 Platinum Motherboard + 3.2Ghz Procesor + 2GB DDR memory require?
I'm trying to find out how much power my system uses, I've seen a "350W Fanless PSU" but I'm not sure if 350W is enough to power my system.
I've looked on the MSI site but cannot find any mention of the power used by the motherboard itself.
    Pete

    +12v - 22A min
    +3V - 30A min
    +5V - 30A min
    Watt rating > 400 (preferrably > 450).
Rule of thumb for a Prescott system. High end or dual cards, add extra amps to the +12V and consider watts > 500.

  • MB 915/G Combo MS-7058 video card options or suggestions on the new market

First off my apologies. I wasn't sure which forum to place my question under,
    Retired Motherboards or Video Cards.
Quick summary I'm looking to upgrade my video card on an older mother board and have run into problems with a new board working. I think the problem is a backwards compatibility issue.  I need help  with a list of what video cards I can buy that are available new preferably if not a list of where to go and what to watch for. I would like to increase the speed/ram. My skill level is around, open the case swap out the item and insert the disk. With a search forums and try to find the answer/follow directions or suggestions.
    In more detail,
I'm looking to upgrade my video card from NVIDIA GeForce 6 Series  NX-6600  256mb card on a an MSI 915P/G combo. The install/instruction manual lists under the above combo name MS-7058 (v1.X) ATX Motherboard and  below the image of the board there is also the text of G52-M7058x1.
The video card option for placement is in the sole PCI Express X16 slot (no on motherboard graphics and/or connection options I know of)   and I assuming from what I've tried researching that the PCI Express x1(mentioned elsewhere but all suggestions were cards no longer for sale) is some sort of standard of limit and my motherboard is too old despite newer cards fitting into the slot and claiming backwards compatibility to the "PCI Express or Pci Express 2.0".
Part of that possible assumption of my issue comes from the fact the mother board can have ether DDR1 or DDR2 ram for memory  but a video card with DDR3 ram would not work. Also the software from the included disk and from the from the website install correctly for the card to function other than the basic windows drivers leaving the card unable to run any games.   For reference the video card purchased and tried was a  EVGA Geforce GT 610 SC9super clocked) with 2 GB of DDR3 Memory. Which i hopefully will have returned for a refund soon.  I spent most of the day trying to install the software by their program , by launching from disk directly, from downloading the most current version from the manufacturer's website and checking with Microsoft for possible system change updates.
My original invoice August 2005 lists the  pre order lists the Item VGMS-NX6600/256E   then under description MSI NX6600-TD256E/PCIEX/256MB for the grand price of $169.00  deleviery receipt lists the card as item VGXM-X66DHEJTZ1   Description XMEDIA 6600 256MB PCIE DVI/TV
Power Supply 630 watts installed July 2008 I can not get the full listings of voltage and amps per connectors without taking the powers supply loose from the case(which requires shutting the system off, so I hoping I won't need to but will if the information will help). I do not feel power is an issue due to the size and the power supply was unneeded upgrade,  that I just wanted to replace when swapping out a motherboards damaged from a lighting hit or power surge. System was running fine for years.
    General system information
Windows XP professional SP3 All updates current.
    Intel Pentium 4 3.2 GHz
2.00 GB of Ram DDR 1
    Videocard  NVIDA 6600   Driver 6.14.12.9573
3 hard drives of varying sizes 500GB,1TB and 2TB  Plus one external  with external power supply 1.5TB drive
If more information is needed please let me know.
The best advice and help would be a list of currently for sale video cards that will work with links to places (and the actual model even better) like New Egg,  or if there is such a card at the local Best Buy(outstanding advice on this non compatible/working card....I won't digress into my own mistake of buying there). I'm way out of date on information and standards about computers and hardware and need help  figuring out what Video Cards to look at for purchasing.   Preferably new, then re manufactured with warranty then used...  The main game I play that strains my system but is playable is call of duty modern warfare 2 and would like to run 3 if possible. Although better rates with COD MW2 and COD 4 MW.

100% correct on the mother board
The card I had tried was EVGA---GeForce-GT-610 2GB DDR3 I can't post external links but it was from Best Buy. The  box claimed requirements are that it needs PCI Express or PCI Express 2.0 compliant motherboards with one open graphic slot.  The best I could get out of it was slightly working with Windows XP basic driver which no games would run. No selecting drivers helped from the Add Hardware program.
So I should make sure it lists "PCI Express X16" and  " version 1 " "1MB(in reference to what part?)" or words to that effect?  I was mislead by the box above for capability and "NVIDIA" on it, am I correct in assuming it was a generic whore knock off which bought the rights to stick NVIDIA name on the outside for a standard or software?  Especially since the actual video card says EVGA and not NVIDIA on it....  I won't make that mistake hopefully again.
Due to age I was buying a cheap fill in card,(old one was working fine but I figured a good training/practice exercise and to see how much better the games looked  to encourage me going forward on my first build) until I can start ordering and building to  the current upgradeable standards.   I'm trying to catch up on standards and not  have a firewire or zipdrive experience. Although I might put a 5 1/4 disk drive in unused bay for show    I would prefer not to buy another per-assembled option and decent computer part stores near me are lacking. Or I lack knowledge of their locations. If it matters I'm in Charlotte, NC USA
My budget is up to about $200 although I would like to stay around $100.00 (usa dollars) if possible. I think that gives me realistic options even with places like Best Buy. If I'm not, please correct me. I'm aware best Buy will give me a special 30-50% price increase  but my local options for shops are hurting, the "best place for reputation" is a story of shame.

  • How to connect 3 DVD recorders in MSI 915P

I have a MSI 915P motherboard (MS-7058) e i just can connect up to 2 dvd recorders to IDE1... if i connect one more recorder to IDE2 or IDE3 the computer do not "see" this new dvd recorder... anyone can help me? Does this have to do with IDE2 and IDE3 and SATA?

  • MSI 975X PLATINUM POWER UP EDITION

    today is january 23rd, 2010
i just bought the msi 975x platinum power up edition in new york, from a store that was going out of business, but i am having problems because this does not power on.
i am using brand new and tested functioning: thermaltake tr2 430w psu, intel core 2 duo 2.66GHz fsb 1066, and also tried a celeron d 2.66GHz fsb 533, 1x corsair 1gb stick 800 mhz, nvidia 7 series pci express vga card, connected to a test ctr monitor AOC 5en.
i connected the 24 pin atx main connector, the 8 pin connector that powers on the cpu and also the peripheral connector that powers the pci express, and all i got was the heatsink fan spinning, but nothing appears on my screen (all is black).
i hope somebody can help me, because now the store where i bought it has closed, and i dont know how to get a warranty from MSI since i dont understand their RMA policy.

if it is not sure that after updating bios the motherboard can use some more new cpu`s, then i think it would be a waste of time trying to do a bios upgrade.
I am not sure that I understood what you mean, but it is nothing unusual that an older board/chipset will not support the latest processor models.  And this has nothing to do with the board manufacturer.
    Quote
I only wanted to do that bios upgrade thinking it would be enough to avoid the karma of searching for those listed cpus
What is so hard about digging up a supported processor?  I mean, all you have to do is to decide which model you want to get (an E6600 would be a great choice for this board) and then buy it. You will probably be able to get a great deal on a used one on E-Bay.
This is not a complicated situation.

this is my first msi mobo!!!
... and it has nothing to do with this being an MSI Mainboard.  The only problem is that it is an old mainboard/Chipset and that the latest 45nm processors are too different regarding their specifications to be properly supported.
    Quote
where can i get a copy of the driver cd utility of this mobo?
i would like to get a copy from the original cd
There was no driver cd included in the mainboard box which you can make a copy off?
You can find all drivers for download on the product site for this mainboard:

  • MSI 870a-G54 Hard drive problem.

About a week ago i reinstalled Windows because it started to slow down (virusses and what not) And as soon as i reinstalled everything (programs games etc etc) One of my harddrives used for games did not show up at the bios and at My computer.
So this entire week i've been trying to get it to work again and i've narrowed down the problem today to the BIOS and/or motherboard not giving the power to the HDD in order for it to start and be recognized in BIOS and Windows.
What ive done to come to this conclusion:
    - Reinstalled Windows twice,
    - Replaced CMOS Battery,
    - Flashed the BIOS to every BIOS setting the MSI website had to offer. None worked for the HDD to get powered up again.
    - Moved CMOS jumper,
    - Changed SATA and powercables on harddrive,
    - Tried the HDD on another test PC i had and reformatted it there as well,
    - Only hooked up the not working HDD to the PC, (HDD did not spin up, and came to the conclusion at this point that motherboard or BIOS is the culprit)
    - Unplugged the powercable to the not working HDD and plugged it back in when the PC was running and i could feel it spinning up, after this i restarted the PC so that the HDD would still get power and it was recognized by the BIOS and Windows and i could use it. As soon as i shut down the PC entirely and restarted it the HDD would not spin up. And i had to unplug power to the HDD and plug it in again and restart PC for it to work properly.
    - Checked for bad sectors nothing found,
Everything else is working perfectly. Except that one HDD not getting the power when booting up the PC.
The HDD in question is the "Samsung HD502HJ 500gig" used for Steam games.
    PC Specs:
CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 955 Black edition. Put on a new CPU cooler last summer (Cooler master Hyper 212 Plus)
    Mobo: MSI 870a-G54
PSU: Antec EarthWatts EA650 (650 Watts)
Graphics card: Powercolor PCS+ HD5870 Put on a custom cooler last summer (Arctic Cooling Accelero Xtreme 5870)
    RAM: Kingston ValueRam 1333Mhz DDR3 (8gigs 4x 2gig) Bought 4 gigs extra last summer
HDD1: Seagate ST3160812 AS 160gig used for Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit (Works perfectly)
HDD2: Samsung HD204UI 2TB used for Storage / Other games than i have on Steam. (works perfectly) Bought last summer with the cooling/system upgrade
HDD3: Samsung HD502HJ 500gig used for Steam games. (Does not work anymore after reinstal) Bought 2 years ago along with the rest of the PC
I am completely at a loss here as to what the problem is. I do not have the funds to buy a new piece of hardware at this time (i think the entire week of struggle would back that up for me lol...). And ive basically tried everything what i know and what i've found through Google and friends. Might have been better going straight to MSI forum and post my problem here but narrowing it down to this not only helps me but the person that is going to post below in this thread as well lol.
Thanks in advance and i hope to hear from anyone soon.

Try drive in different PC, as it looks like it died.
HDD's always spinup as soon as power is applied, ergo I think the drive died.
Ive tried it already in 2 different PC's and i have to apologize here for not mentioning that earlier in the topic.
The drive spins up perfectly in both of those PC's and ive checked for bad sectors on both of those PC's as well and it showed that the drive was 100% healthy on both PC's
The drive was working perfectly fine before the reinstallation of windows. Thats why i dont think the drive has died. Because it would be weird that the drive just suddenly gave up right when im reinstalling windows..
It also doesnt add up when i plug the powercable back into the drive while the PC is running and it spins up then and works perfectly until PC is shut down. Thats why i had it narrowed down to the BIOS and/or Motherboard being the culprit.
My best guess is that its software related because the PC does boot up so its not a hardware problem.
    P.S.
A friend of mine said that it could be a powersaving issue. But ive looked into the BIOS and i could not find anything about it.

    Hey there,
Noticed that my BIOS drivers were outdated so i updated them (Z68A-GD65 G3, version: 25.8), after all the reboots i logged on my computer, started teamspeak, and while searching for the teamspeak room the driver problem happened again.
Anyway, my power supply is NOX Hummer 80 600W, model: HUM80600.
The problems started on September of this year i think? I've had this computer for almost 3 years now. I have the latest Nvidia drivers, and this still happens, i've tried downgrading, fresh installing, and nothing worked.
    Graphics card: MSI GTX 670 Power Edition 2GB GDDR5 PCI-E 3.0 DirectX11, S/N: 602-V284-02SB1207063830.
I'll try it tommorow if possible.
    Thank you for the attention.
