915P Neo2 Platinum - Memory?

Have devoured the MSI website & various others & I'm still not sure if DDR2 667 - PC2 5300 or DDR2 667 PC2 5400 is safe to use in the 915P Neo2 Platinum.  One very tiny phrase, in one place, on MSI's website IMPLIES that it is OK, ". . . Support Dual Channel DDR2 533/400 MHz and up", BOLD emphasis mine.  "and up"?  I just can't interpret this.
At the price of these DDR2 DIMMS, this is no place to make a mistake, but the DDR2 667 PC2 5400 modules seem to be more plentiful, & even more competitively priced, than the DDR2 533/400 modules.
This is my third MSI build, & some of the posts here make me think I've made a mistake this time.
I would appreciate any advice/observations/experiences.

Some early, tentative answers to my memory question(s) are beginning to trickle in.  As many of you undoubtedly know, DDR2-675 is a still-developing area, leading edge stuff.  I did not heretofore know this . . . maybe I should have.
I am not a lazy PC enthusiast.  Maybe I missed some of the available resources in my earlier searches & too soon resorted to pleading my case in this Forum (a dandy, if anyone cares what I think), & by writing Corsair.   The "RAM Guy" at Corsair emailed me back with a nice, informative answer, & in the meantime I had just located some apparent answers on my own. Maybe these resources had been updated since I first looked, maybe I missed them, whatever, here are a few links that shed blinding light on the entire subject of DDR2-675 and some "wicked" latencies:

I am a 59-year old retiree geek-guy, with enough time to buy PC component parts & then build PCs and PC systems (this one for a grandson), & to research my choices.  But, it's still difficult to track down the information novice builders like me need to make informed choices.  The build process is infinitely rewarding, challenging, and, yes, at times very frustrating.  I know . . . not exactly a news flash to any of you reading this.
Sorry if I previously whined in this fine Forum, & on this especially useful Board, "Intel P4 & Celeron P4 based board".

  • A few bios problems with my 915p Neo2 platinum board

I'm wondering af anyone here can help me.
I just got a new system and a friend of mine helped set up the bios for me, afterwards he failed to tell me how he had configured the bios (my first big mistake).
Since the buidling of the system there have been 3 short beeps at the beginning of startup. I was told that it was a warning system of some sort and when i looked it up, the informations pointed towards a problem with the RAM.
I ran memtest86 and it found no problems with the RAM, so i contacted the site i bought the parts from and they suggested i reset the bios.
I did so and the beeps remained, but my DVD and DVD-writer drives arent being detected anymore.
I took my PC around to another friends house with only his keyboard and monitor connected. The beeping had stopped before we changed anything. Bringing it back around to my house resulted in the beeping returning.
From this i gathered that the only things different may have been his power source and the peripherals i have attached to the back of the case. (speakers, printer, kb/m, etc)
Going by the manual map, my 2 HDDs are connected as slave/master in IDE port 1 and my two DVD drives are connected to the yellow IDE port that is closest to IDE port 1 (it's either IDE 2 or 3, the map isnt too clear on which is which).
Long story short, can anyone help me in identifying the source of the beeps and their meaning, an optimum setup for my bios and how to get my DVD drives to work.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me. I'm fairly new to building computers and my friends are the type to suddenly become unavailable as soon as a problem arises.
edit: just noticed i missed the spec description part menitoned in the rules.

second attempt at clearing up the garbled mess from above.
Motherboard is making 3 short beeps on startup. Indication of a problem with memory. I've established that it's something external that causing the beeps as the memory has checked out fine with memtest86. Hence i will be checking all the attached devices.
I was guided to reset the bios in an attempt to clear up this problem above. Doing so has resulted in my bios being unable to detect my DVD drives.
My DVD-drives are connected to IDE port 2/3 (manual is unclear on which is which).
Everything was in working order (with the exception of the beeping) before the bios was reset but due to my lack of knowledge/involvement with the original configuration of the bios, i'm at a loss as to how to fix it.
If anyone could recommend me any updates for the bios, or could advise me on how to configure my bios accordingly to the parts i have i would be most appreciative. Also, if osmeone would be abel to shed some light on the beeping issue i would be thankful also.

Maybe someone with this board will pitch in and help.
I saw this and was wondering if i should install it. It would be the equivelent of resetting the bios again wouldnt it? So it wouldnt be that much of a step back from where i am at the moment and it might be able to sort my IDE problems.

  • 915P-Neo2 Platinum - Live Update Crashes

Is anyone else having trouble loading MSI's "Live Update", especially "Live Monitor" on the 915P Neo2 Platinum?  Every time I load it the entire system collapes in the Blue Screen of Death upon reboot.
I've tried loading Live Update from both the enclosed "Drivers & Utilities" diskette and from the MSI Website where the latest version of Live Update (I guess) is located.
Both crash my new system the same.  It just keeps looping at the Boot-Blue Screen-CRASH!-Boot-Blue Screen - CRASH!
The only way to recover is to do a Restore in Safe Mode.
Very disapponted with the 915P Neo2 Platinum board in general, i.e., the above reason and the slow, ragged - even sloppy - boot.
And if there is any advantage in these high-priced PCI-Express videocards that justifies the money, I can't find it.  My old 875P Neo (signature system) smokes this new 915P even with its ungodly high-priced DDR2-675 memory.
    Stay clear of 'em.

  • 915P Neo2 Platinum Hard Drive/Optical Drive Configuration

My main drive is the 120Gb SATA drive listed below but I'd like to utilise a 160Gb PATA h/d that I used to use for backups on my previous system.
I have the SATA drive configured as my boot drive.  ATM, my DVD drives are connected to IDE1 as I have a recovery CD which needs to be booted should I need to use my backups.
I've been tinkering with this system and would prefer to have the parallel IDE drive permanently connected to IDE1 but still boot from the SATA drive.  To this end, if I connect my DVD drives (configured as master & slave) on a single IDE cable to IDE2 and boot, they aren't recognized as bootable devices when I hit F11 after POST.  However, when Windows boots they do appear.  With this configuration I can't restore data because I need to boot from a recovery CD-ROM.
Is it possible to have optical drives connected to one of the RAID IDE connectors and make them bootable?
If not, and since I do have 2 drives, I assume someone will suggest going down the RAID route.  Can RAID1 be configured across 2 hard drives if I have 1 x SATA and 1 x PATA?
    TIA.

To what I know, it is not possible to get Optical drives to work on IDE 2 and 3 since they are mainly for RAIDs and HDDs.
Keep the Optical drives to IDE 1 and the IDE HDD to IDE 2.
    Thanks for your quick reply.
I've tried that - get the same problem with boot devices in that the h/d on IDE2 won't boot.  (It holds a copy of my C partition.)

  • SLOW performance SATA HDD on the 915P Neo2 Platinum

Almost for a week I have tried to setup Windows XP prof. with SP2. Unfortunately the performance of the system is very poor.
For this reason I extended let test the system and compare the results with an other system.
My System                    Other system with diamond-maximum one 10, 160GB ATA133 disk
    Disk - Sequential Read = 3.37                               Disk - Sequential Read  = 63.04
    Disk - Sequential Write = 3.51                              Disk - Sequential Write = 55.99
    Disk - Random Seek + RW = 1.91                         Disk - Random Seek + RW  = 2.7
    Disk Mark = 31.08                                               Disk Mark = 440.24
As you can see the result is awful.
Have tried all settings for a single HDD in the BIOS, but unfortunately no plausibly results got.
Is there people have the same problem ?
Kan any one help me out of this ?
    My system configuration:
    - Antec Sonata II 450 Watt
    - Intel Pentium 4 630, Socket 775
    - Corsair ValueSelect DDR2 SDRAM, 1 GB, PC4300, 533 MHz
    - 915P Neo2 Platinum (V1.0B)
    - 2x NEC ND-4550 16 connected to EDI 1
    - 1x Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 10 250 GB, 7.200 rpm, 16 MB, SATA/150 connected to SATA_1
    Thanks in advance !!

Can you try with HDSPEED?  goto http://www.georgebreese.com/net/software/ and download HDSPEED. Look for the Bandwidth and Sequential. Sequential is the actual throughput speed of your HDD, some 55~65MB/s is pretty good. Bandwidth is your HDD cache throughput speed, which should be some 100MB/s.

  • Wich bios driver for 915P neo2 platinum-54g

    915P neo2 platinum-54g m-board
    P4 630 3,0GHZ cpu
    2*512M Kingston 533MHz DDR2
    Club3d 128MB Radeon x300se hypermem PCI-E
not sure of the power, but think it's 300w, 20-pin connector. (waiting a new power on monday, 400w ultra-low noise)
    Sound Blaster Live! Platinum
So I read from the MSI site that the 915p neo2 platinum doesnt support p4 630, but the cpu support list says it does after the bios update..
But now Im not sure wich bios driver to use cause I cant find the exact model from the site.
I use that comp as a music studio comp and I get a crash in about half an hour the comp is on.. (using cubase program)
At first the crash appeared at cubase startup, but after I updated the g-card & s-card drivers the crash was post-poned to that half an hour..
But still, when I try the Core Center programs Auto overclocking test it crashes almost straight away.. Once I got from 200MHz to 205 MHz
Other times it crashed straight away..
So I think myself that the bios driver is the key, but Im not sure of it.
    Or wich driver to use.. the 915P Neo2 Platinum (7028v18) or 915P Neo2 Platinum v1.0b (7028v36)

what is your newest PSU? can you provide PSU details(can be found into PSU sticker), and remaining parts of your hardware e.g. what VGA you got?
"some time the cpu temp say`s 104  c !!! put when i toutch the fan i didn`t find that it`s hot like that "
seems your CPU heatsink is not making good contact with CPU surface, or there is too much thermal paste or CPU cooler is going down.
power down PC, remove power cord from the PSU  and re seat CPU cooler, clean CPU socket from any dust, clean CPU surface from existing paste and apply a new one. then mount CPU cooler (ensure its mounted property, ensure CPU FAN is spinning at expected RPM). re-test, if no go, change your CPU cooler with new better one which gonna do the job.
thank you very much for your response
i change the PSU again  with other and the computer work fine now
and use new cooler and the temp between 40-55 is this good ? new fan speed 3000 -4000 rpm

    Hi,
Can any one help me with the BIOS settings for my SATA HDD on an  915P Neo2 Platinum motherboard ?
    Configuration:
    - Antec Sonata II 450 Watt
    - Intel Pentium 4 630, Socket 775

    - 1x Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 10 250 GB, 7.200 rpm, 16 MB, SATA/150 connected to SATA_1
I have tested with the following settings:
    1)
       ATA/IDE Configuration [Enhanced]
       Configure SATA as [IDE]
    Result:
Can't format with Windows Setup CD (sp2)
If it formatted with 3rd party utils, then performance of the system is very poor.
    Thanks in advance !

Hi, I suggest you to set the ATA/IDE config as Legacy and check that all your HDDs are detected, if not all, at least your HDD and optical drive. Then continue with the installation. After WinXP installation settled down, then go back to the BIOS and switch to Enhanced again, and then continue boot up to windows and install Intel INF.

  • 915P Neo2 Platinum problems

I'm hoping someone will be able to help me as I've been tweaking bios settings for 3 days and not managed to get anywhere with this.
    I've have the following:
    1x 915p Neo2 Platinum Mboard
    1x Sapphire x600 235MB Graphics
    1x Corsair PC2-4200 512 MB DDR2
1x 40GB Western Digital IDE drive
1x 30GB Western Digital IDE drive
When I first switched it all on, the board powered up but I got no display and no beeps. After pulling out all wires and adding the minimum of devices I got it to start up properly and got into bios. Eventually, after tweaking some settings and then systematically adding each device in turn I got everything connected whilst maintaining stability so it would still boot up.
Next problem I has was that it wouldn't boot from a floppy. It kept giving me "Disk I/O error". I tried several different floppy disks - same problem. I changed the floppy cable and still got the same error. I then bought a new floppy drive and tried that but still got the same problem. Decided to carry on and install XP incase floppy started to work later.
When installing, I pressed F6 to load RAID drivers. I selected the IDE RAID driver, it chugged away and carried on loading setup. My 2 IDE drives were successfully identified and I selected the installation drive and formatted it (tried quick and full format), after it had done this, it then tried to load the RAID driver again from the disk. At this point, the driver disk is still in the floppy drive, but it then says that it can not load the file from the disk and to try another. Again I tried several disks all of which gave the same problem.
I've searched this forum to help me with my earlier issues and found answers but couldn't find any info on this one. Can anyone help? I'm starting to think that my mboard has a poorly floppy controller. Also, I've got completly confused about the RAID setup, I currently have both my drives, 1 as master and 1 as slave, in IDE2 and have not touched the RAID BOIS setup - does this mean I will still be able to use these as 2 different drives? Eventaull I will add SATA RAID.

I cannot boot from Floppy, can boot from CD. When I try to install WinXP with SP1a, I hit F6 to load RAID drivers, choose driver from list. Setup then detects HDDs, I format install drive, then it tries to load RAID driver again from disk and gives a fail message of "unable to load VIAMRAID.SYS" and will not continue. If I try to install without RAID drivers, it says that there is no  storage device connected.

  • New 955X Platinum and new BIOS relase for 915P Neo2 Platinum

    Hi all,
Just wanted to bring some news to this forum so that not all topics are trouble related:-))
Hope it's ok with the moderators....
MSI has just relased their new 955X Platinum mobo, and I must say it looks great.
It has some special features like 9.1! Dolby sorround and E-SATA brackets for external S-ATA's. It fully support all the Intel? Dual Core processors such as the 820, 830 and 840 families and the highest Pentium 4 Extreme Edition series processors like P4EE 840.
Best of all, it delivers power to the cpu finally tru a 4.phase voltage regulator, so I hope this board OC better then its predecessors.
Sinse this is a Platinum board, I hope MSI havent skiped the 955X DIamond board they showed at CeBit2005 tough.
Anyway, look out for this board and you can read the press release here.
I know some of you 915P PLatinum owners have had som troubles with youre boards, I just want to inform you that MSI hase just released a new BIOS(1.7) to youre board. You can dowlad it here.
Well, thats all. Have a nice weekend everybody:biggthumbsup:

I know, but I,m hoping the 955X mDiamond will support SLI. nVidea has just revealed that they will support SLI on Intel chipsets.

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum Memory Issues

I have two Super Talent 512 DDR PC3200/400MHZ Memory Modules and attempting to use them as dual channel. I am getting some funny behaviour however. In windows mode, whenever I try to do something memory intensive the machine crashes and reboots. Normally I would say that this is an issue with a bad chip, run memtest86 and determine which chip is bad. Well the results are a bit strange. When ever I run memtest with both modules in either banks 0 and 1 or 2 and 3 (dual channel configuration) I get memory errors. I then test each module separately in bank 1 and get no errors. Do I have a setting wrong somewhere? Could this possibly be incompatible ram?
Can someone please enlighten me as to why this might be happening? If its a settings issue it would be helpful to know where and how I should set this. If it is a compatibility issue it would be very helpful to know what brands of memory people have used successfully for dual channel so that I don't get stuck with this problem again.
Thank you very much for any assistance anyone can offer.
    Channon

Did you purchase the RAM from a 'chain' retailer? - like Best Buy or Circuit City, etc.?  If so it is most likely dual-channel RAM.  Now if you got them from your local 'junk peddler dealer' (that's what I call them) and the RAM chips were not sealed in a manufacturer's package, with their name on it, then you may have gotten screwed.
You can try installing one stick in slot 1 and the other in slot 3.  That should set the system to single-channel mode.  See if it runs okay and then run Memtest again.  If the test passes then you've got yourself a set of 'fake' dual DDR. :(
If you got them at Best Buy (or whatever) that is a large store with a good replacement policy, you should have no trouble exchanging the RAM for a new set... and MAKE SURE THE PACKAGE SAYS DUAL-CHANNEL.
Now on the other hand... if they came from a local computer shop, take them back to where you got them, shove them in the guy's face... tell him he's a liar and will replace your RAM with the correct sticks.  If he refuses you can always shove each chip into his eye sockets to get your revenge.

  • MSI 915P Neo2 Platinum V1.0A allergic to internet?

    Hi!
I've had this board for years now and always had a problem with internet conections.
Basicaly what happens is that I start with a perfect (wireless) conection that will last for months, and then starts crashing every now and then, and then starts crashing a lot until it crashes for good. The only way to fix it? Format the HD and reinstall everything again.
Naturaly I thought this might be a problem with windows - I'm using win2k - but I later found out that the same thing happens with XP installed.
After the last final crash I bought a PCI board to conect by cable (yeah, I know I have a plug on the back panel but that one never worked at all! ).
Now, I'm online with the new board but every 15 minutes or so the conection sort of freezes for maybe as much 6 minutes (and it's increasing) before going back to whatever it was doing.
Both with cable and wireless the conection icon says everything is always 100%. The PC gets the signal just fine (and the other 2 computers using the same router never had a problem) but for some reason it just keeps blocking it at some level.
Has anyone ever heard of such a thing? Any tips I can use?

    Hi again!
    Thanks for all the tips.
NovJoe - I have yet to try sysinternal. According to Highjackthis the only noticeable thing about stuff running in the background is that apps like avg and addware still run something when you think you shut them off... Still, I usually have the PC working on heavy graphics, or 2 "heavy" apps at once and there's never a problem with speed. Whatever it is, it only gets the browsers (and only after a period of time after installing).
In the meantime, I discovered yet another interesting thing - this "drag" or "freeze" or whatever doesn't affect MSN. At all. It just keeps getting weirder...
Bas - I've tried with no protection at all. No change.  I'm afraid I don't know what channel you're refering to.
I going to try sysinternal as soon as possible as well as something I read on another site. I'll keep you posted.

  • 915P Neo2 Platinum v1.0 USB Support

I am having problems with my USB support under XP Pro.
I have 2 front USB ports, 4 on the motherboard, and 2 on the extender cable at the back.
When I connect a USB2 device to any of the non-motherboard ports, the PC freezes and is not recoverable (except for reboot). USB1.1 devices work fine in any port, and USB2 devices work fine in the 4 motherboard ports.
I have the Intel® ICH6R Chipset for USB support, with the latest drivers installed.
I have also checked the cable pinouts for the two USB connectors to the motherboard, which all look ok.
Is this a problem of the motherboard, or the OS?

Thanks heaps Danny for the info. The Wonkanoby link is what I needed.
A quick snip and up she came. All USB's are now working perfectly.
Antec Sonata case by the way!
(I'm obviously not the first here)
    Very informative link. Thanks again
