925X Neo Platinum Motherboard shuts down

URGENT help required
My system:-
MSI 925X Neo Platinum
Pentium 4-550-3.4GHz
MSI RX600XT-VTD128E
Antec Sonata case with 480W PS and a large 150mm fan on rear in addition to PS fan
512Mb DDR2 RAM
2 WD 12GB 7200rpm 8Mb Cache SATA
Pioneer DVR-109
56k Internal modem
FDD 1.44Mb
MS Multimedia KB
Logitech mouse
Windows XP Home
Whenever I shut my system down I always have to wait about 20-25mins before being able to re-boot. If I try to re-boot too soon it always shutdowns as soon as 1 or 2 secs after powering up. I am pretty sure it is not driver or software related because it shutsdown too soon and always boots OK from cold and only fails if I try a re-boot within 20 or 25 mins from shutdown. It appears to be temperature related. I have made other enquiries and while this CPU is known to run hot nobody else seems to experience these delays in rebooting. I have been told that the BIOS updates are lagging behind the hardware development and that it is not possible to adjust the BIOS temperature shutdown setting high enough to prevent the shutdown but why is my system the only one experiencing this problem.
Also, I notice that with the PC Alert 4 display the +12V supply is only showing 5.58V. Is that right?

Feedback to us when your new system arrived.
I have my new system up & running - well almost!!!! I brought it home and after loading some software I starting transferring some old LP records onto CDs. After 4 trouble free days of that I decided to try out some video editing  but when I ran Intervideo WinDVD the system froze when I selected "Capture". Thinking it may be software problems I tried to do the same with Windows Movie Maker & Nero and the system froze with each program. The system is now back with the retailer so he can get it working properly.
I think I need to get my old trouble free Athlon back!!!!

  • K8N Neo Platinum keeps shutting down

I have just built a new system with a K8N Neo Platinum, Athlon 64 3400+ with retail heatsink and fan, 1GB of Corsair TWINX1024-3200C2 DDR400 memory, eVGA GeForce 6800 GT, two 80 GB Maxtor SATA drives in an Antec Sonata case with its TruePower380 watt PS, and my existing NEC 2500 DVD-RW and a DVD-ROM drive and floppy.  The system keeps shutting down before I can get WindowsXP installed.  It seems to be a heat issue, since its runs the longest after a lengthy shut down, but the bios hardware monitor shows the system temp stable at 33 and the CPU temp at 39.
If I let it idle, it continues to run, but it frequently shuts down when I put a load on it, such as saving the bios configuration or starting Windows during XP setup.  I have been able to get XP installed once and started to install the Nforce drivers, but it shut down in the middle of this.  Windows files seem to be corrupted frequently.  It seems to be somewhat better after I pulled the Athlon heat sink and reapplied a thinner layer of Arctic Silver II.  I note that the heatsink does not attach as tightly as the one on my Athlon 1800+.  The heatsink fins always seem to be cool to the touch.  I notice that the machine usually (but not always) shuts down on a keystroke.  I am using a PS/2 keyboard since my USB keyboard doesn’t seem to work.
I understand this motherboard has some issues with temperature sensing, and I would like to get XP installed so I can flash to a later bios and try some moderate overclocking.
I am considering going to an aftermarket CPU cooler, installing a larger power supply, or replacing the MB.  I am also considering switching the RAID configuration on the SATA drives from 0 (striping) to 1 (mirrored) or just turning off the RAID function until I get this fixed.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Trickster2

Thanks for the suggestion.  The Antec 380 has 18 amps on the 12 volt rail, 35 on the +5 and 28 on the +3.3, and I have seen numerous posts of people successfully using this PS for this MB.  I have tried reducing the power demand by switching to an old PCI video card, an old stick of 256MB memory, unplugging the optical drives, floppy and case fans, but the machine still shuts down just as quickly.
I finally got XP installed, but haven't been able to update the BIOS yet.
Is there anyway to know whether it's the CPU, the PS or something else causing the shut down?

  • MSI 925X Neo Platinum (Need 64-bit BIOS for 3.6F)

    HI there
I am doing a review of the MSI 925X Neo Platinum motherboard, but believe in order for it too support my Intel sample CPU (3.6F) which has 64-bit extensions then I will need a BIOS up-date to work and get the most from this CPU.
Does anyone know where I can get such a BIOS or can someone from MSI contact me please.
If you need to contact me in any other way then via these forums then please email me at [email protected]
I will also be talking to MSI Computer (UK) Ltd. who will hopefully be able to help me out too.
P.S.  Also how do I go about getting a 64-bit version of Windows XP?

If you want someone from MSI to contact you, you best email then or phone them... This is a user forum..
As to the 64-bits Windows, there is a 1 year preview version of it on microsoft.com that's free to download. Also a newsgroup for Win64 at microsoft.private.windowsserver_64bit
    UserName = privatenews\64bit
    PWD = 64bit

  • 925X Neo Platinum - ECC compatible?

Is the 925X Neo Platinum motherboard compatible with ECC RAM?

This is what I have been advised:
No the board doesn't support ECC memory because the chipset limitation.
A new chipset version will support it but not ready yet.
I remember something in the news a while back that it is an Intel problem with the chipset.

  • 925X Neo Platinum, nothing on monitor

    My setup:
    925X Neo Platinum
    2.66Ghz Celeron D 331
    512Mb RAM
    Club3D Radeon 9250, PCI
Everything seems to start fine, though the monitor doesnt initialize. I'm trying without harddrives and any other unnecessary components, though I suspect it is the graphics card. Since I'll probably use the PCI-E slots for something else in the future, I want them to be unused if possible, that is why I'm using a PCI graphics card.
I do not know the BIOS version of the motherboard.

ok... remove the PCI display card as well, do you hear any strange beep? 8 beeps with few longs and ended with few shorts.
Try removing RAM again, NO RAM on your system, your PC should beep 3 long beeps indicating no RAM. If it didn't, that means it hung somewhere detecting your CPU and chipset. That's no good.
You may try BIOS update but it seems like your system get stuck well before detecting the RAM. You need a known working CPU to put on your board, and flash to the latest BIOS.

  • 925X Neo Platinum O/C Question

Ok, basically i think i fried my sound card overclocking my processor, now ive been told it was because i needed to lock PCI, well I was wondering whether anyone knows how to do this on my motherboard the 925X Neo Platinum. Also is it necessary, and is there anything else I should look out for when overclocking
My memory is set to 600 though it is 533, and this automatically as set my processor to 3.58ghz
All help and suggestions would be very welcome, cheers

Ive tried Oc this board a little, but with rather bad performance, ad you can see in my sig. The system will not post after 220 in FSB so im just keeping it at 215. I dont think its the heat  because its really stable right now. Ive tried unlocking the CPU ratio, but then I cant change it,e.g. 16to17, so its really not working. And of course I will not try to fry my system as Im a little short on cash right now, no mopney for replacements. How high have you got your CPU? And how?

  • 925X Neo Platinum - Vista drivers

I am looking for Vista 32bit and Vista 64bit drivers for MSI 925X Neo Platinum (LAN, Wireless, etc.). Any ideas?

hi, can you check at www.intel.com ? hmm... this board doesn't have wireless right?

  • K8n NEO2 Platinum, PC Shuts down when "decompressing BIOS to RAM"

I'm thinking i have my bios dead, and i read in other topic something about recover bios using a floppy disk with the bios but when i connect the computer it starts without push in the power button and in 2-3 sec the computer shuts down.
I checked D-Bracket trying to find the trouble , and it does well the 3 first steps :
    1- System Power ON
    2- Early Chipset Initialization
    3- Memory Detection Test
4- Decompressing BIOS image to RAM for fast booting ...
    Shuts Down
i have connected CPU/ 1 Memory module / Graphics card / keyboard and no more , all the components are OK i tested in other PC.

    I'm using a PS/2 Keyboard.
And i thought about bios error because some days before the big crash the bios lost its config ...not all but some config like the beautiful screen that you can see with msi logo which i had disabled ... and then the PC started to reset every some mins. .... so 1st Error in config bios ...2nd instability...3rd Shuts Down.

  • Motherboard Shut Down Works, Restart DOES NOT

Bare minimum hardware installed - when I select "Save settings and Restart" from the BIOS the PC screen goes black and just hangs... If I choose to shut down the system that works without a problem.
I flashed the BIOS to the latest version and the issue remains.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Don't be afraid of the reset button when booted to the BIOS. The BIOS needs to communicate with the operating system's drivers during reboots, so there could be some kind of conflict between the correct boot device and the BIOS. That problem could resolve itself on it's own as your devices become more familiar with themselves.

  • MSI K8N Neo 2 - motherboard is "down".

I had many problems at start (e.g. Picture problems in BIOS, strange voltage etc.) but later it was ok. There was faild-safe settings in BIOS. One evening i turned computer down and I noticed that power led is strange, regular flashing. Next day i couldn't tunr it on again. All Fans are down, there is no sign of life exept for this power led. Other components are ok, I tested them in other machines, everything works correct. What happened ? I tried to reset CMOS, use other memories, no effect. Can i try something else before RMA ?

Power LED flashing is a typical indication that your PSU is in Overload. This can be from overloading it with goodies or even a power surge. Shut down the PSU on the back panel and unplug it for a few minutes. If you get it powered back up afterwards then it may have just been a surge. However if it does not repower or it does this again in the future then replace that PSU with a better one.

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum not shutting down properly

I built a new system with this motherboard and the Athlon 64 3500+ Processor.  I also installed Kingston Hyper X memory.  I installed Win XP pro with SP2.  I also have a eVGA 6800 GT card.  Everything works fine, surf the internet, and play games.  Problem I have is, that when I goto shut it down it starts to shutdown but it then will reboot instead.  If I keep selecting shutdown it will eventually shutdown.  I hope someone can offer advice to what the problem is, and offer a fix.  Thanks
    My Specs:
    AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Processor Socket 939
    MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
    Kingston HyperX KHX3200K2/512 512MB Kit DDR400 PC3200
    eVGA (256-A8-N344-AX) GeForce 6800 GT AGP 8X 256MB
Western Digital Raptor WD740GD 74GB Serial ATA 10,000RPM
    Seagate Barracuda ATA V ST380023AS 80GB Serial ATA 7200RPM
Sony DRU700A Double Layer DVD+RW Drive
    Sony CD Writer/DVD drive
Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Sound Card
Antec TruePower True430 430W Power Supply

Go to Control Panel > System > Advanced > Startup and Recovery > Settings
and  make sure "Automatically Restart" is unchecked.
Its possible you are getting a Blue Screen stop error for some reason.   Doing the above will enable you to check if that is the case.

  • 925X Neo Platinum

Ive recenlty tried to purchase this motherboard but i was told that it was withdrawn from  the market for techincal issues ... what exactly were the techincal issues that made msi pulled the card ?
i was wondering that if the 915P has the same problems or is it ok ?
ALso i has told that it does not support all the Graphic cards
Can i be told which graphic cards do they support ?
    thnxc in advance

All 9x5 boards were recalled some time ago due to a problem in the ICH6R SATA RAID (which was not present in the ICH6).
But that was only for a limited number of boards produced within the first few weeks of the chipset availability, there should be no reason for them not to be available today.

Fixed it, took a bit but figured it out, after update system was trying to boot from my EIDE drive instead of my Sata hard drive.

  • DVD-burner problems using 925X NEO Platinum

    Hello,
I've experienced a lot of problems trying to burn DVD's lately. Both of the latest DVD burners I've used only burn DVD's at 1.5x speed. I read a post on this forum about a guy who experienced exactly the same and he was adviced to switch the DVD burner to IDE1 instead of IDE2. I did that, but never got my computer to start again. (It only said read falut, press ctrl+alt+del to try again).
I now use a DVD-burner from LG (GSA-4163B), I got all the latest drivers, BIOS etc. I also have tried burning on all (almost) different types of DVD's. The result is the same = only 1.5x speed. CD's burn only at 10x at the most.
I've also learned that my HD's only use PIO-mode, and cannot use DMA at all at the moment. WHY? They are both set to "use DMA if possible-option". I use a MAXTOR 6Y120P0 and a SEAGATE ST320413A.

Windows XP falls back to PIO if it detects transfer errors.
Possably a bad cable caused that.
You should be able to get back to DMA by deleting the IDE controllers from the device manager and rebooting.
In DMA mode your burning speed should pick up.
If you are using cheap rounded or extra long cables (over 45cm) I would consider replacing them.
OK, I've changed the MSI-cable (that was rounded and looked pretty cheap) that was connected to the burner
& DVD-rom, but it seems nothing really happens when I uninstall my (6) IDE controllers. They re-install themself
when rebooting, but still use the PIO mode. Should I uninstall all 6 controllers (3 primary, 3 secondary) at the same
time and then reboot, or what?
I bought a new, quite expensive IDE-cable recently, which I use for the burner + DVD-rom, but it's 60cm long.
Should I replace it? Is that really necessary?
    Thanks for the reply!!

  • 925x neo platinum restart problem

Hi. i am new to this forum so hope i am going about this the right way.
in my sig is the details of the system i am trying to get working but as of yet i have had no luck. Everything is pluged in and seems to be working the post display appears and then for a second the menu asking me to press delete to access bios appears, with in a second it has gone and the process starts over. one thing i found very odd was that when i plugged in my ps2 keyboard that menu no longer appears and all i get is the power saving mode screen again.
On reading a few topics on the forum so far i have tried the following:
swapped power supply from a q-tech 550w with the antec 550w that is mentioned in my sig
    checked that everything is connected
disapled case fans incase lack of power
have changed my sata drive to my ide one from another computer
    reset cmos
changed the ram around as well as removing it altogether.( when removed alltogether all i get is a blank screen)
I am running out of options and have alrdy had problems with wrong ram being sent and soforth delaying my computer build up for 3-4weeks
any help you can offer would be great. but it looks like i may have to send it back and wait another 1-2weeks to get a replacement
thankyou for any help that you can give

    Hi!
Good thing that you threw away the Q-Tec!
    Just a few things:
    - Are you able to access the bios?
    - Did you reset the CMOS already? If not, please do so (see your manual on how to do this) but always keep your pc disconnected when reseting the CMOS!
    - If this doesn't help, please disconnect everything from your board. Only keep the following connected: powersupply, cpu and fan, one stick of ram and your graphics card.
Try to boot your system now. You should get an error message about the system being unable to find a bootable device.
