945GZM3 PCB v1.1 SATA problem

I've bought a PC with MSI 945GZM3 v1.1 motherboard, but some things doesn't seem to be working well. I've noticed that PC stars and works very slow, that should not be I think causes the processor is 3000 MHz P4. so I decided to check the bios settings and found out that the SATA is configured to work as IDE. According to the user manual there has to two options to choose from- IDE or AHCI. But for real there is no other option but IDE. ? My HDD is Maxtor DiamondMax 17 6G160E0. Can anyone please help me solve this problem?

SATA is IDE by nature, nothing wrong.
IDE = both PATA & SATA.

  • SATA Problems (Money to anyone that helps!)

Ok ladies and gents! I will seriously PayPal some cash to the person that helps me solve this one!
Just got myself a new setup....
    MSI K7N2-ILSR Motherboard
    AMD XP Barton 3200
    512MB Kingson Hyper-X DDR 3200
    Samsung 120GB SATA 133 HDD
Thermaltake Subzero 4G Peltier Cooling System
    Wavemaster Aluminium Case
    The problem is this....
If i plug in the SATA HDD into the SATA-0 motherboard connector and boot up the PC, when it gets to the Promise bios where it should be asking me to do a control-f to set up an array, the PC just hangs. Its just stuck on that screen and it does nothing!
I have no idea why this might be, thought it might be a power issue (have a 350W PSU, but it was cheap - £25) and it didnt have a SATA power connector so I had to use an adapter. Could this be it????
I have had to temporarily plug in an IDE 20GB thing and install XP on that - and the system works fine....its just this SATA problem.
So - anyone if anyone can spare some time to sort this problem out it would be much appreciated! I know theres probably loads of posts like this - but I can be bothered to trawl through trying everything!
    Help Meeeeee!

Just bought k7N2-Delta board, not the G one. Have two SATA 120GB of differing brands and NONE would ever detect one SER1 on the board. No problem if you want to only use one drive, plug it into SER2, but if you want to use 2, no go. It was funny though because i could boot of SER2, stick a drive on SER1, FAstrack would not detect it but windows would, VERY STRANGE!!!!.
Took your advice and flashed to lumberjacks modded bios and WHALLAH, can see drives on both SATA connectors.
So board is good but MSI bios upgrade support is somewhat c#$p. BTW this board rocks.
Modded bios is much more stable too than the MSI one, amazing really because I was totally suspect on modded bioses b4, but now understand why people do it.
CMON MSI pick up your act, get the promise bios into this board that is as good or better than lumberjacks sterling effort. employ him or something you fools.
ANYWAY, happy days because now my board rocks and is the heart of a gaming weapon

  • K8T Neo2 V2.0 SATA-Problem

    Hi Folks,
I got a "problem" with my K8T Neo2 V2.0. At first I had 3 IDE-drives, but I needed a new DVD-burner to read double-layer discs. So I bought a SATA-Drive, plugged it in and it worked good. (VIA 5.13A hyperions). After that I decided to go for a new, bigger, faster harddisk .. also SATA. I wanted to profit from the speed so I made a clean install of Windows XP on that new SATA-drive. BIOS was set to IDE and the Windows-setup recognized the drive correctly without an driver from floppy. Then I used the newly released 5.14A Hyperions and the strangeness began. Suddenly the safe-removal-icon for the SATA drives in the taskbar was gone, no more hot-plug capabillity I thout. I wanted to install a game from DVD and I realized darn slow read-speed from the new DVD-drive. I read only with 3x-speed and double-layer DVDs with 2x. I made a repair-install of Windows XP an rolled back to the 5.13A Hyperions and now my safe-removal-icon and the normal read-speed is back - but now sometimes I get an "program-lag". When I close a programm and want to open an other, or just a menu or something, sometimes the PC don't react for 1-2 seconds.
Any suggestions? Any knowledge about SATA-behavior on the K8T Neo2 V2.0? (or the VIA Hyperions?)

    Well here are some specs:
    Athlon 64 X2 4200+
    2x 512 MB DDR400 RAM, Infineon
    1x IDE HDD, Maxtor 6Y120P0
    1x SATA HDD, Seagate ST3250410AS16
    1x IDE DVD-Drive Pioneer A06S
    1x SATA DVD-Recorder Plextor PX-810SA
    Creatice SB Live! 5.1
    PSU Enermax 350 Watt (EG365AX-VE / 3,3V=32A; 5V=32A, 12V=26A)
Windows XP Pro with SP2 installed on SATA-HDD
The Hyperions from the MSI-Driver CD also don't work (same no-hot-plug-problem).
In the BIOS the SATA-channels are configured as IDE, I never needed a driver floppy for XP-install.
The system event-log only shows one failure "loading of boot- or systemdriver viamraid failed". When I had my old XP install on the IDE drive (with installed 5.14A hyperions) the VIA V-Raid utility was installed and could be started, the hot-plug-ability was working as I plugged in the DVD-Recorder. Then I installed XP on the new SATA-HDD (with plugged in dvd-recorder) and the problems came up. Also now no via vraid-utility is installed.

  • SATA Problem: Can see hard disks in USB enclosures, but not internal

I have a mid-2010 macbook pro 13". The other day, it crashed on wake-up, and would not boot. I had a OCZ Vertex SSD boot drive, and the OEM hard drive in an optibay enclosure (replaces the optical drive and used only for data). I used this setup for one year with no problems. After much troubleshooting, I found that I could see the SSD drive by booting into a recovery partition that I have on a USB stick, and putting the SSD in a USB enclosure. Then disk utility could see it, but not mount it. The label on the boot partition was "lion", but it changed to "disk1s2". I was able to repair the drive using disk utility, and then boot from it using the USB enclosure.
Once booted, I could still see the OEM hard drive with no problems. So I powered down and put the SSD back inside the case and rebooted. It booted in safe mode, but it booted fine. The next time I rebooted, it would not boot. I swapped the OEM drive and the SSD drive, and then the sytem booted with no problems and I was able to use both drives.
One day later, I noticed my OEM drive was no longer mounted in OSX. I took it out, put it in a USB enclosure, and OSX could see it fine. There were no errors on the disk. I put it back in the macbook and reboot but OSX couldn't see it.
So, the primary SATA port seems to be working intermittently. Three times now, a drive has stopped working on this port. Each time, I could use the drive in an external enclosure (or using the other SATA port normally used for the optical drive. Does anyone have any ideas? Could it just be the cable? It is the motherboard?
I'm trying to make this computer last at least another month or so because I need to upgrade to a larger model, and am holding out for the 2012 release.

Could be something as simple as the cable...they have been known to go bad. Got an Apple store nearby? If so, it's a cheap/easy replacement.

  • REALLY odd SATA problem -- bet you can't fix this

So, I go to a LAN party on Tuesday night.
I leave my computer downloading stuff from newsgroups and I come back to find everyting packed up for me nice and neatly. I asked if my computer stayed on through the entire time I was gone and my friend told me that someone did unplug the main power before the downloads finished -- but I thought that wouldn't be a problem, just an inconvienence.
I get home and set everything up and guess what? It doesn't boot.
So I fiddle around with it and I just end up reformatting my boot drive (SATA raptor). I had to unplug all the other hard drives to let XP reformat the hard drive -- that was very odd in my opinion, it would just say "Windows XP cannont install to this drive. Go back to the formatting screen and format the drive." But the odd thing is that it wouldn't format it to anything other than RAW unless I unplugged my other two drives (one IDE one SATA #2)
After the reformat I booted correctly with the drives still unattached. I then proceded to logically plug the IDE and SATA cables into their slots. Windows no longer boots. Ok, so then I try to isolate the problem. I unplug the other SATA drive (SATA #2 -- 300 GB  maxtor) and it boots. Problem found.
I was downloading the items off of newsgroups onto that drive when it was unplugged. My ONLY guess is that there is a data error on the drive that needs to be repaired but I cannot even run a disk check. the XP disk wont check it beacuse the 300GB doesn't have an XP installation so the recovery console is useless. I have run out of options. I have tried using the promise controller too and it wont even "start" correctly in windows. I attribute this to the same problem.
REFORMATTING THE DRIVE IS NOT AN OPTION!!!! I have about 250 GIGS of extremly important data that cannot be lost!!!!
I will update my system specifications immediately and my IDE configuration to follow.
(Channel -#- Controller - Media Type)
    IDE-1- ICH5R - DVD ROM
    IDE-2- ICH5R - 160 GB Seagate
    SATA-1- ICH5R - 36GB WD Raptor
    SATA-2- ICH5R - 300GB Maxtor 16MB cache
    SATA-3- Promise - Empty
    SATA-4- Promise - Empty

Wow Ruckus17 that is strange. I have done unbeliveable things with my Maxtors. You are saying even as a extra drive you cannot access it even to run scandisk..I do that all the time on my sata 3 and 4..they don't have a OS they only known for storage. I drag and drop my pics on one and all my games are on the other.. I am almost sure this is a Drive problem. and I understand you want to Save the info.. even though you said that the drive will not format. One of my drives done the same thing and all I did was turnon the computer this was the first 3 days after installing. the new drive in Raid 0. after getting the new drive I tried to install the OS again but I had allready setup my max. ATA to the promise yellow connector with XP and I could not format for Raid 0 with a OS Even trying to fake it out by unplugging the OS drive. then it could not find the other 2 drives. maybe you could try putting the drive in another computer. I was told this would never work due to configuration problems the Pc's were totally different but booted with no problems... I had to RMA my drive, It would cost you a fortune to have the Data rescued on a 300 Gig drive...

  • Msi h61mu-e35-b3 sata problem

There are times that at system boot, my sata devices such as hdd and odd is not detected by the bios therefore it will not boot to windows then go directly to bios setup.
What I usually do is I connect the devices to other sata ports or tried to change sata cable but still it does not work. The fix I only see is to set to load optimized defaults in bios then boot the system repeatedly.
By the way all settings in the bios is always set to default. But what seems to be the problem?

Try a different drive, see if it has the same problem or not.

  • Promise SATA problem

Thanks to both of you.  I've tried hitting ctrl-F but nothing appears.  I can get into the Amibios no problem and have set the Promise controller to SATA only.
After reading what you've both said let me say what my set up is.  I have an 80Gb Maxtor ATA drive on IDE1 and two DVD drives on IDE2. I have two 160Gb SATA drives on the ICH5 Southbridge controller.  I have an internal zip drive on IDE3. I have nothing on the Promise SATA controllers but will do one day, I hope.  I can see everything but the zip drive.
Can I only get into ctrl-F if there is something attached to the Promise SATA controllers?
I have to tell you I'm a bit clueless about RAID but don't think I need it.  I'll check up on it later but right now I just need a working system.
    Thanks.

Just did a compleate format and reinstall of my windows drive, wanted to start over. I was having a few problems with other software, and I wanted to to work with a clean slate.
Ok, I have 5 SATA drives all plugged into my motherboard. 4 are in the AMD SB600 sockets, each running in IDE mode. I have one more drive, formated, that I want to install in one of the 2 remaining Promise sockets,.
The drivers for the Promise are currently uninstalled, and the 5th drive is not seen because of it. The only drivers availible on the K9A2 PLAT driver page are for RAID. Previously, I have tried to install these drivers, and then configure the drive in the socket to run as IDE, but with no luck.
My problem boils down to, 'can I install any drives into these sockets as IDE', 'do I need drivers to get ide to work', 'where can I find these drivers', 'do these drivers work for vista x64 (OS is not running from this socket)'.
Sorry for the ranting, it has been a bad day for me.

  • P35 Platnium Strange Sata problems

    p35 platinum  Bios 1.0
    e6750 core 2
    2GB memory
    320GB segate sata hd
    ide dvd-rom
I'm helping a friend out build his new system.  We were able to get it to boot up however in bios it detects the hd as 135gb.  Thats one problem.  The other problem is it sits on the bios boot screen for a bit and pops up and says primary slave hd error when there is nothing plugged into that and I can't seem to find a place that lists the ide devices in the bios.  When we tried installing windows xp, it cant seem to detect any hd and the Sata is set to IDE.  As far as i know another friend of mine who has the same board said he didn't have any problems and xp detected his drive with out need for a driver install from a floppy.
I haven't tried a bios update yet, but was going to do that when i get home since we didn't have a floppy drive for it. Could bios version 1.0 be the reason for all these problems?
Sorry if I'm missing some info I'm going off the top of my head from last night.

stay with bios 1.6. clear cmos. make sure you plug to the correct SATA port, ie port 1 ~ 4.
check your seagate drive, is there any jumper to set on the HDD?
go ahead and install WinXP and see. and then set the registry as shown

  • SATA Problem with 865PE NEO-2 Platinium

i bought a new SATA hard disk (western digital 200gb) for my computer. i installed it then formated it and make the new partitions with Partition Magic 8.
after statring to copy my files from my old hard disk (western digital 80gb) the speed is too slow it even hangs sometimes and computer stops to responde to any thing i have to restart it.
my bios is V3.A every thing works fine except the speed when using the new hard disk.
    i have a P4 2.4 256kb 256X2 kingstone Ram.
it worked fine befors with the 160gb, i enabled the SATA harddisk to work in SATA1 mode only but nothing changed.
plz help me as quickly as possible, should i change the hard disk or what is the problem.

i was able to get higher performance by combination mode in setup
    (Win 98 SE / ME)
    ATA On Chip Mode: Combined
    ATA Config: SATA + PATA
    PATA Keep Enabled: Yes
    PATA Channel Selection: Both
    SATA RAID Enabled: No
    The rest as defaults.
but i was only able to detect the SATA hard disk and PATA only, or the SATA hard disk and the CDROM & CD-R only i wasnt able to detect the 4.
    the results where:
    Transfer Rate: Min 35.9mb/sec
                        Max 63.9mb/sec
                        Average 54.6mb/sec
    Access Time: 13.4ms
    Burst Rate: 96.9mb/sec
    CPU usage: 9.9%
these results are good but if i use any of the other settings in setup the previous results are shown, by the way im using Windows XP pro SP2.
i got a weired error under health tab all the status was OK except one FAILED
    ID: (BE) (unknown attribute)

    Worst: 23
    Threshold: 45
    DATA: 54
    Status: Falied
sorry i wasnt able to post the photo with all results.
any suggetions on how to get this performnace or higher in any mode other than combination or to detect all connected drives (by the way the only option in combination mode is PATA+SATA no other option can be modified)
and what about this falied satuts does it affect the hard disk and thanks in advance.

  • KT4 ULTRA FISR SATA Problem

I really need some help here. I have a KT4 Ultra board with SATA Interface and a brand new Seagate Barracuda 120 GB. On to the problem .. when i booted up the computer for the first time, it detected my disc. After that .. i was testing som different settings in the BIOS .. and had to clear the CMOS Now .. it won´t detect the drive at all. It says something about "No drive attached to the FastTrak controller. Bios not installed/loaded" I have installed all drivers and stuff that came with the board but no luck. Is the driver loaded into the BIOS from the beginning or? How do i get the d*amn board to detect it again? I can´t even enter the bios setup (for the SATA controller.. ctrl+f) So .. i can´t really do .
    Help!

It says jumper (Factory only) so i don´t think u are supposed to jumper it. It´s master by default. At least that´s what seagate claims =) Or?

  • Sata Problem - Read/write

I've been searching thru the forums and haven't found anyone with a similar problem. Trying to install a new Maxtor 160 Gig SATA HDD. Bios will recognize it and so will Win XP. The problem is I've only been able to tranfer a small amount of files to the drive (20 - 30 meg) before system locks up and drive becomes unuseable. Will ususally get an error in the taskbar notification area stating "WINDOWS - Delayed Write Failed" and that there was a problem transferring data, all data lost. After a computer restart the new drive will not show up in explorer or disk management.
I've tried all the legacy and native modes, SATA at P0, IDEs at P0. I don't OC. Performance Mode set at slow.
I've installed Windows with just the SATA drive but it was unstable and eventually after a few restarts loses boot files and will not reboot.
After getting fed up with it I returned the drive assuming that was the problem but the replacement is no different.
The only thing I can think of that there is not enough power which would really me off since I bought the new power supply when i upgraded with the motherboard.
I've included the PSU specs below.
Any help would be greatly appreciated since I haven't got a clue when it comes to the power requirements.
    THANKS

    PSU  -  ISO 450W
    +3.3V = 22A
    +5 V  = 36A
    +12 V = 18A
Running with 3 case fans plus motherboard and ATI fans

    Thanks for the info.
I've tried 2 different SATA cables and there's only so much room in a case for keeping cables apart.
I've got a wireless router in the same room but no wireless card in the PC. Wireless used for a laptop. Can't see how or if that would affect it.
Turned off the write caching on the disk, still nothing. Have to re-partition and format the drive again to get XP to recognize it. Turned off caching. On restart, once again have problems getting into explorer and if when I do new drive is gone.
Whenever the SATA drive is connected and not working, the HDD activity light stays on, can shut down but not restart the computer.
Anyway thanks for your help. Unless you or someone else has anymore suggestions, I going to assume the problem is with the motherboard and return it for a new one.

  • Maxtor 250GB SATA Problems

I just installed my 3rd Maxtor 250GB SATA drive in almost as many months and I'm still having problems with very slow performance and delayed write errors followed by the drive disapearing from Windows.     The first 2 drives worked ok for a period of time, but this 3rd one started having trouble right away.
I have a WD Raptor 36GB installed as the C: drive and I've had no problems with it.    I read the info here about SATA/PATA setup and I've been using the suggested setting of native mode, SATA, PATA enabled, both channels enabled.   I verified that the Maxtor is using the B5P bridge chip.
I don't know whether to buy a WD 250GB SATA drive and see how it does, or just let Maxtor send me the IDE version of this drive and give up on large SATA drives.
    Thanks,
    AirBear

Rukus17 & Danny, thanks again for your help.   I went out today and paid some big $$$ for a Antec 430W TruePower PSU.  It even had dedicated SATA power connectors.   After installing it the hard drives all worked just fine.   I transferred nearly 200GB back onto the Maxtor 250GB SATA without any glitches.
I've built a number of computers but I never realized the difference in amp ratings on the same wattage PSU.   It's so typical of me to build a fast system with good quality components and then put a freaking el-cheapo PSU in it
I sure wish I'd come to this forum before I RMA'd the first 2 Maxtors. You think their tech support would have had me check the power supply ratings.  I must have spent an  hour or two on the phone with them, I even made it up to level 2 tech support.

  • K8N Neo2 + Maxtor DiamondMax 10 (SATA) problems!

    hello.
i wanted to know, if anyone knows a working solution for the problem that the nforce3 chipset / nvidia sata controller / mobo bios or just (some?) k8n neo2 mobos causes the system to freeze while booting when a maxtor diamondmax 10 is installed?
for anyone who still has problems: a temporary solution for 1-drive-users is to plug the drive to the sata4 port (right between the agp and the cpu socket), instead of plugging it to sata1, which would be the correct procedure under ordinary circumstances though.
i found out that my own system was highly unstable as long as i connected the drive to one of the first two sata ports. the other ones worked better. is the problem limited to sata 1/2 on everyone's board? if not, it would be RMA-able.
but there is another thing besides the instability of these expensive pieces of trash (sorry, no other hard drive and mobo has given me a harder time yet!) that bothers me more:
why is my maxtor diamondmax 10 6b300s0 so noisy? on idle it runs very smooth and is quiet, but under heavy load it almost roars as loud as my old u2w-scsi drives i had back in 1995. could it be that windows or the sata controller does not turn on the cache?
i hope, somebody can share his experience.
    wan-hi

I've got the neo2 and 2 Diamondmax 10 Maxtors in RAID1. I've had loads of trouble as well... Today is my first day without a freeze and hard reboot needed. I started building (slowly mind you) about 3 weeks ago.
If this is actually stable now, perhaps you can try a similar setup. All these steps had frequent hangs and re-attempts.. I got through in the end tho. (Doesn't instill confidence that you have a stable build tho!!)
I have the 2 drives on SATA 3,4
All SATA BIOS settings are enabled (inc port 1,2 settings)
I used the 2 RAID drivers on the supplied floppy disk (same revisions as on the website currently)
I installed WinXP with service Pack 1 built in (is that what people mean when they say a streamlined XP install?)
After updating all the motherboard drivers etc, I installed Service Pack 2. With SP2 I had frequent unrepeatable hangs, but cpu burn type programs and games wouldn't trigger it.
Only office type work/browsing seemed to kill it.
I switched to a USB mouse from PS2, and that seemed to help.
Last thing I tried was uninstalling SP2 and it's lasted all day now. Longest strtech previously was 3,4 hours of intermittent use.
I agree with you about the noisy Maxtors though.. I had a Seagate Barracuda before and that was really silent. These don't whine at all but clatter when seeking.
Apparently with the Diamondmax 9's you could use a Maxtor utility to quieten (slow) the seeks, and a IBM/Hitachi util also worked.
I can't get either to work cos the 10's are SATA only drives. Maxtor util only works with IDE (or perhaps SATA non RAID), and IBM just fails to see them.. shame. I think the Maxtor util might work with some other, older SATA controllers... have to track someone down with a compatible setup who doesn't mind me carving up their machine. Actually haven't tried adjusting when the drives aren't RAIDed.. hmmm.

    Hello Casinowilhelm:
    Welcome to the forum.
When you reinstalled the Raid drivers did you reinitialize the disks?
A RAID array uses information stored on the disks to keep things orgainzed; this is often corrupted when the array is 'broken.'  The initialization process can restore this information, albeit withour preserving the data that was formerly on the drive.
I'm not familiar with the specific RAID software on the RD480, but other RAID initialization routines involve initializing each drive by itself then assembling these initialized drives into an array.
Also, are your drives in the same order as they were in th original RAID configuration (i.e., each drive connected to the same SATA port as before)?
I have had problems with formerly RAID drives related to the boot sector - when I try to use these drives as boot drives they sometimes have problems initializing (even when boot sector protection is off in the BIOS).  This implies that RAID arrays rely on this sector for configuration information, with an ID byte occupying the first position in the sector.  Initializing this sector can be a problem without a sector editor, a piece of software that should be approached with all the care of a bomb - you can clobber your system very easily.
It is possible to do a low level format (different from the OS format) on some SATA drives, but this, too, can be dangerous - each vendor has their own process which can vary by drive type.  It is possible to brick your drive using a low level formatter that is not specifically designed for the drive.
    I hope this helps.
    ss
