I have just bought a MacBook Pro and want to use it in my office and while travelling because I was having such problems with my portable PC. So what to do in the office?? In the office I have a big HP machine that handles the network.
I have an old PowerMac 9500/200 and am wondering whether I should buy the latest operating system to be able to interface with other PCs and my MacBook or whether I should dispose of the PowerMac and buy a new iMac or a MacPro.
Would the new operating system be OK with such an old machine? If not, is there a market for them?

If you haven't done so already, I'd install a USB PCI card in the 9500. You'd also need to install the USB support drivers, which can be extracted from the OS 9 CD using "TomeViewer." It's the equivalent of using WinZip to extract Windows CAB files. Post back if you're interested in the procedure. After loading the USB drivers, restart the computer and then connect an external USB hard drive or flash memory drive (depending on the number of files). After transferring the files from the 9500's internal SCSI drive(s), restart the computer from the OS 9 installer CD and use "Drive Setup" to reformat the 9500's internal hard drive. Under "initialization options," be sure to select both "low-level format" and "zero all data," to wipe the drive prior to reinstallation of the OS and eventual disposal of the computer. An online search should find a few freeware utilties for thoroughly wiping the hard drive, if you want an extra level of erasure of your personal files.

  • Connecting Power Mac 9500/200 to network to transfer data to iMacs

    I have recently had two of my macs stolen an old G5 Power mac and a new iMac 27" I used to use the G5 as a go-between to transfer files from my Power Mac 9500/200 to my network because the PM 9500/200 could not see the iMacs and vice versa. Is there any  way of connecting them now, I believe there were some problems with  networking such an old system before is this still the case?

    Very little that is compatible with the 9500 is with the 10.7 or later Macs.

  • PowerMac 9500 System 9.1 keeps becoming "corrupted"

    I have a Powermac 9500/200 with a Sonnett G3 466 upgrade card, but this problem also occurs with the original 200 MHz Apple card as well. This machine has 256 MB of ram and two 4GB SCSI drives... otherwise it is all original. This 9500 has run OS 8.1 solidly and beautifully for many years. It will also run OSX (10.0, 10.1, 10.2 using Sonnett's installer) just as beautifully... solid as a rock. Yet whenever I load OS 8.5, 8.6 or 9.1 (or 9.2.2 using OS9 Helper) it will startup once, and then on the next startup it will bomb upon the OS splash screen with an "unimplemented trap", "bus error" or "address error" system error. You can try to reboot until the cows come home and it will be the same thing each successive try. If I boot onder OS 8.1 (or OSX) and replace the OS 9.1 System and Finder files with previously backed up copies (saved upon the OS's initial booting) it will then startup in 9.1 fine... one time. the next time I go to restart it I get the same "unimplemented trap", "bus error" or "address error" system errors again. This is a mystery I would love to be able to get solved. Can anybody help? (Pleeeeeeese!)

    It is seldom possible, let alone fruitful, to pinpoint the failure that causes the error message, but there are things that you can do to cover the 'persons of interest helping the police with their enquiries'.
    Be sure that your System/OS installations are from 'full install' or 'retail' CDs, and not from CDs that are specific to other Mac models. Machine-specific CDs for the 9500 ended at System 7.5.3.
    The cause of the unimplemented trap error is the issue of a wrong (none, or an unintelligible or garbled) instruction to the processor, whether that is before, during or after the splash screen and extensions loading. Startup Manager has handed over to System, or rather, to Finder at this point. Suspicion must fall on Finder preferences, System preferences, Finder itself or System itself, more or less in that order.
    Make sure that your HDDs are properly connected and their drivers are intact—especially after the number of crashes that you have reported—for Finder's sake. Ideally each OS is on its own partition. While you are troubleshooting, drag Finders out of the System Folders to root level of the partitions for all but the OS being investigated.
    Reset PRAM at startup, and after the fourth chime, hold down [shift] to disable extensions. After the message to this effect in the splash screen, hold down [command-option] to rebuild the desktop, and allow that to happen. When the Mac settles at the desktop, trash Finder preferences. Make sure that the Sonnet extension is able to load immediately after Extensions Manager by putting a single space before its name, if that is not already the case. Check that a startup volume is set in Startup Disk. Restart from the Special menu, not with the three-fingered salute [command-control-delete]. You may have to do the same for System preferences if the first time round is not successful. If even this is not effective, it is time to consider a clean installation of the OS, with all the joys of transferring third-party extensions back from Previous System Folder one at a time that that course entails.
    After the successful troubleshooting or re-installation, DiskWarrior rebuild of the HDD file directory, and defragmentation of files with PlusOptimizer, will ice the cake.

  • Scripting AppleWorks Spreadsheet

    I am trying to write a script to create an Appleworks Spreadsheet document with various characteristics and content, going one step at a time.
    So far I have been able to create the document and name it via AppleScript, using the following:

    As an occasional user of AppleScript it took me a while (don't laugh) to get the "document kind:SS" bit right. Once I saw the potential of "with properties" I thought it must be possible to specify the number of columns and rows. To give myself some clues on the grammar/syntax/formatting, etc. I saved a SS document and did a "get properties" using AppleScript. To my dismay, it provided information only on the following properties:
    class, name, index, displayed name, name extension, extension hidden, container, disk, position, bounds, kind, label index, locked, description, comment, size, physical size, creation date, modification date, icon, URL, owner, group, owner privileges, group privileges, everyones privileges, file type, creator type, stationery, product version, version.
    It did not have any mention of the rows and columns, unless that is hidden somehow in the bounds and size properties.
    Is it actually possible to specify the number or rows and columns, or am I barking up the wrong tree? Viewing the AppleWorks dictionary I have seen references to "data bounds", "object specifier", and "named range". These seem to be tantalizing hints of maybe what I am looking for. However, I cannot find anything anywhere which tells me how to use them, not even an example script.

    Your additions to my script appeared to be missing a line, but I had no trouble understanding what you were explaining, and added a line so that it reads:

    Without the extra line, the script brought up the dialog asking which way to shift cells.
    The only drawback I can see in this method is that it relies on a default AppleWorks Spreadsheet always being 40 columns by 500 rows. If the default ever gets changed, there would have to be some error-checking lines inserted to check for range errors.

  • Missing or invalid version of SQL library PSORA (200,0)

    I am trying to configure App. Server on Vista laptop machine.
    The machine name is VRGhati03.
    It is a logical 3 tier archtecture. Its a EPM 9.0 Install. My database (PFDMO) is all configured and I am able to signon using a User ID VP1 and password VP1. My connect id is people with password of peop1e.
    My access id is SYSADM.
    I have created a user id in Oracle as VP1 and granted him the PSADMIN role .
    When I try to boot up the App. Server it tells me ' Missing or invalid version of SQL Library PSORA' and 'Could not sign on to database PFDMO with user VP1'
    The VP1 sign on works via SQLPLUS.
    I also created a User Account of VP1 and tried to boot the appserver under that id but still no success.
    I have gone thru some of the postings on this topic but they have not helped me. What am I doing wrong?

    VP1 is an application user, not a database user.
    PS is a database user, the Peoplesoft objects' owner. It is also an application user on some application.
    Did you try to connect onto the database with people user through SQL*Plus ? Are you able to read PSOPRDEFN, PSVERSION, PSACCESSPRFL tables ?
    What Vista version are you on ? What Oracle version ?

  • Problems with driver for ATI xpress 200

    Hi all,
    this morning I saw that there is KDE4 available. Straight away I installed the packages, run it and it crashed. There was a funny graphical effect just before the crash. This gave me the impression that the problems comes from the graphical driver. I tried the proprietary ATI driver which hangs once kdm is launched. Then I tried VESA which doesn't even start for some funny reason. Eventually I turned to the open source ATI drivers. With them I'm running KDE in resolution 1280x768 which is somewhat strange. So far, I haven't found a solution and think I need a help.

    Longtime reader first time poster.

    If no one posts with any experience, I can say I have had the AIW8500 I think that was the model w/64mb.
    My  Asus GF3 Ti200 64mb blew it out of the water in my opinion.
    It was ok and it worked without a hitch. I have seen users with the new 9700 and it works nicely.
    The three systems I saw firsthand, in person were all running XPhomey.
    If you can wait and see what develops you might be glad you did. :D

  • Radeon 9500-9700 and KT400 (MSI KT4V)

    I currently use a Radeon 8500 with an MSI KT4V (KT400 chipset) mobo. Can I safely upgrade to a Radeon 9500/9700 video card -- I understand that these cards are quite power hungry and to be safe I'll also be upgrading my 350W PSU (3.3+5V=216W) to an Antec 400W+ PSU.
    Are there any other issues with regards compatibility (I know that there are some issues with Linux and KT400's AGP 3.0/8X support, but I only plan on using WinXP Pro). Would I need the AGP8X/AGP 3.0 to AGP4X/AGP 2.0 hardware hack in order to use my video card (as the current motherboard BIOS doesn't allow me to set the AGP mode)?
    Also I've read many posts on Usenet and the MSI forums regarding problems with the earlier versions of the Radeon 9500/9700 cards -- have these issues been addressed in the later revisions of these cards (or the Radeon 9600/9800 series??)
    Any other issues with regards BIOS revisions, VIA 4-in-1 drivers, etc that I need to be aware about?

    i'm not pointing fingers at msi or via or ati. all i want to know is whether i can safely use an ati dx9 series video card with my msi/via kt400 mobo. i've read several posts with varied workarounds and am confused as hell. considering that a 9500 would cost around $200, i just want to be safe than sorry. here are some of the workarounds i've read about:
    1. 8x to 4x hardware hack
    2. increasing agp voltage to 1.7-1.8 (still don't know how this is possible as an agp3.0/8x card uses 0.8volts if i remember correctly)
    3. uninstalling the via hyperion agp drivers (does this degrade performance considerably? i know the default winxp drivers don't have fast write capability)
    4. setting agp speed to 4x using powerstrip (provided i can boot )
    5. changing the psu
    6. avoid sharing of IRQs with the radeon video card
    so all i'm looking for is a "sure, go ahead and spend $200, but also remember to do this..."

  • IPhone limited to 130 apps at a time! 6,200 apps available in app store

    The i phone is limited to nine app screen i notice this when i try to move on to a tenth screen and it would not let me and also when you download a app after all 9 screen are full the app dose not show up but the app store says it is installed apple needs to expand the amount of screen allowed. you then end up having to delete 2 apps download 1 app in able to make the invisible app appear you have to try this one out for your self so you get a better idea of what i mean so it looks like we are limited to 144 apps per iPhone subtract 14 apps that come default on the screen not including the 4 that are on the bar below you are left with 130 apps that can be downloaded and use at a time per i phone that ***** there are over 6,200 apps available in the app store as i type this to you and apple is limiting me to only carry 130 at a time there is somthing worng with this and i think somthing should be done!

    No acutally what that means is most people like myself have to install 30 apps just to get the iphone to do half the things it should have done out of the box. Sure some are wants but most are "need" in order for it to do the things my old palm treo 600 could do, and still there's not copy and past and no video. On top of that they have a stupid 130 limit. I'd love to hear why that is.

    After you restore from backup, you MUST sync to restore your iTunes content. No iTunes content is included in the iPhone backup. Your apps should be in your iTunes library, just sync them back to your phone. If for some reason your apps are not in your library, you can re-download them for free:

  • LaserJet Pro 200 color mfp m276 Printing issues

    I have had this printer for about a year now.  Now it has started printing solid black lines across the page I am printing, whether it be from my computer or a fax.  I can run the cleaning process from the printer and its fine for a few hours and then back to the solid black lines.  It gets so bad there is more ink on the paper than white when it does this.  Have tried everything I can think  of to cure this to no avail.  I am running hp cartridges and just plain white paper.  Any ideas as to how to fix this.  These lines are thick lines, just not _____ but are about 1 " wide each.
    I really need help with this really soon or I will have to replace it with another brand.  I use this in my office and can't have important faxes coming across with all these lines so I can't read it.  I posted this Saturday and still waiting for someone to respond.

    I understand that when printing, you are getting solid black lines across the paper and now on the back of the paper. You are using HP cartridges, plain paper and have ran the cleanings with the same result. I can help you today.
    Try another type of 20lb -24lb plain paper to see if you have the same results.
    I would do a hard reset to see if that will resolve the issue.
    Leave the printer on and unplug the power cable from the printer and wall outlet for 60 seconds.
    Then reconnect the power cable to the printer and wall outlet rather than a surge protector.
    This ensures the printer is receiving full power and may help this situation.
    Update the printer's firmware. HP LaserJet Pro 200 color MFP M276nw Drivers.
    Select your operating system, click next, click the link for firmware.
    Try printing again.
    If the issue persists, follow the steps for aligning and cleaning the toners, printing a Print Quality page, inspecting the toner for damage, checking the paper and driver settings to see if this will resolve the issue.
    Troubleshooting Print Quality Issues.
    How is the printer connected? (USB/Ethernet/Wireless)
    What operating system are you using? How to Find the Windows Edition and Version on Your Computer.
    Are you getting the black lines on the Hardware Self Tests also?
    Where is the printer located? (on a desk, on a enclosed shelf in desk)
    What kind of paper are you using?
    What is the weight of the paper?
    Was there any black on the toner?
    Please provide in detail the results if you are still having issues.

    New LaserJet Pro 200 color M251nw connects to main computer and functions.  Networked computer does not recognize the this new computer.  Operating system is Windows XP.
    IBM Printer 12 was the printer that was replaced.  I used the same USB port that the previous printer was using.  Some how the new HP is not being rcognized on the network and I cannot print from the 2nd computer which is connected by the network.
