970A-G46 board, no video, memory issue?

hello,
I see a lot of people have the same issue i am about to describe, but the only thing that remains is a question of memory compatibility.  I just purchased:
970A-G46
AMD FX-8320
Corsair CX500M 500 Watt Power Supply
I had some no name DDR3 from another box that i planned on using.  When i put everything together, all i had connected was the power, the CPU, 4 x 4G DDR3, and an old video card.  All the fans came on, but no video, no single post beep.  I removed the RAM, then i got 3 beeps, so i am assuming that power and CPU are fine.  I replaced the video card with one from my desktop to see if that was the problem.  same behavior.  so i took 1 stick of the PNY DDR3 from my desktop, and  see if that was the problem.  Same behavior.  Cleared the CMOS several.  Same behavior.
Now, i am not an expert in this, but could it be the mobo is that sensitive to memory that my problem can be incompatibility with the memory?  again, i am not an expert, but this is the first time i have ran into this.  And before i spend ~$160 on 2 x 8G DDR3 that someone suggested in a post, i want to be sure that indeed sounds like it could be the solution to my problem.
thank you very much for taking the time to read this...

I just checked, and i it's 38A.  The power supply has additional cables for adding extra power for PCI-E devices, but the motherboard has no where to plug them in (i hope that makes sense...)  Instead of trying to get this to work with this motherboard, would you recommend just sucking it up and getting a new one, perhaps one that better supports the FX 8-core chip?  Or is this sound like a power supply issue?  I went to the newegg site to calculate my PSU needs, and it said i needed 415W, but there seems to be more then just pure wattage that needs to be considered...
I did try one thing.  I took out the video card, put a stick of memory in, and i get one beep and two short beeps, which indicates a monitor problem.  to me hardware noob brain, it sounds like a need a more powerful PSU.  but i figured i would ask those who know what they are doing before i run around buying new stuff if i do not need it...
thank you very much...
Don't worry about the PCIe cables and so on as they're designed to plug directly into your PCIe devices, like your gpus, for instance, with their own 6-8-pin connectors.
I mentioned the 12v rail amperage as that is particularly relevant for cpus these days, especially multi-core cpus.  Even though my own PSU (Corsair as well) is only 100W more output than your present one, I'm still getting 49a on the 12v rail--which is ~11 amps > than what your 500W Corsair puts out, which could certainly make a difference.  Have you tried entering the UEFI to set your cpu to run on 4-6 cores, just to check out that possibility? *Can* you even get into the UEFI at the moment? (probably not, I guess.)
Like durquavian, I wouldn't ordinarily think this would definitely be *the* problem, but it's a possibility that needs to be ruled out.  There are just so *many* little gotcha's that could cause your problems, from incompatible ram, to weak/defective PSUs--even to something as weird as accidentally somehow managing to not seat your cpu properly--long years ago I scared myself once when I had assembled everything and when I turned on the power, mboard lights lit up, fans turned--but no boot!  Natch-of course--my cpu was the last thing I reseated, and the cpu reseating solved the problem....  (Obviously, I've never forgotten that incident.)
But if you haven't already done so--reseat your cpu and double-check the fan mount, etc.  Luck!

Glad you were able to do it...I remember my first RAID 0 experiences...It's really funny when I recall the paranoia from folks who'd never done it themselves...like, for instance, the old wives' tail that states that with RAID 0 your odds of drive failure are multiplied  100% by the number of drives you have in the array...  "If you lose one drive, you lose it all," etc., which seems to make sense until you consider the fact that if you have just one drive running in SCSI/IDE mode--and it fails--you also "lose it all"...  Then there's the "But RAID 0 isn't fault tolerant" myth, which is true but still a myth because normal SCSI/IDE is also not fault tolerant...!  The fact is that if you have 2 standard IDE/SCSI drives running compared with 2 drives running in RAID 0, there's no difference at all in the odds of a single drive failing at any time...  The drives don't care whether you run them in RAID 0 or IDE, of course, etc.  Drives always fail individually--almost never in pairs, of course--and so the odds of a RAID 0 drive failing are exactly the same as they'd be if you weren't running RAID 0 at all.
Anyway, I've included RAID 0 in every build I've done personally since 2004, and the interesting fact is (although mere coincidence) that on those rare occasions when a drive has failed it has not been one of my RAID 0 drives...!...  Enjoy!

  • 970A-G46 No post video feed.

    Hi,
I've recently purchased a new computer. Everything will start up, yet I get no video feed and I heard the beep code for a video failure. I've tried searching for different solutions but nothing has worked so far.
    Parts I'm using:
    MSI 970A-G45 Motherboard
    Sapphire Radeon 7770
    AMD FX-8120 8 core processor
    1 seagate 500GB HDD
    Sony Optiarc 24x DVD drive
    2x 4GB Corsair DDR3 Ram
    OCZ modXstream 700W Power Supply
I'm new to this so any help would be appreciated. If any other info is needed I'll try to answer as quickly as possible. Thanks!

Did you hook the 6 pin connector to the vid card?
    Have you re-seated the card?
If it is your first build, I would recommend re-read the directions, unhook everything and rebuild.
It's plugged straight into the supply and I've tried re-seating the card. I'll try re-building and seeing how that goes.

i suspect the problem is the OCZ power supply! they seem to cause many issues and are not to be trusted! that card needs a minimum (no load) of 25A from the +12v rail and the max on your psu is 25amps on any of its +12v rails it will only be able if it ever works to power the card for 3-4mins max before the power will fall off and your back to no signal.
ditch it and get something like a corsair CX 600 v2 power supply with a high ampage capacity single +12v rail 30A-35A!
I'll keep this in mind, I'll see what else comes up and try this as a last resort.

  • MSI 970A-G46 : No Sound

Just bought a new 970A-G46 board.  I've updated all the realtek drivers, uninstalled them re-installed them. I've double and triple checked the both the front panel and rear connections. I've reinstalled windows and then reinstalled the drivers and I cannot get any sound out of my speakers or headphones on either jack (front and rear). The device manager is saying that the device is working properly but it is not recognizing any speakers being plugged in. I've also made sure that everything was enabled in the bios and I have reset the CMOS once. I can't decide if its a bad board or if there is something else I am missing. Any help would be much appreciated.
Also, I have tried drivers that came with the board, from MSI's website, and from realtek's website.
    Mainboard: MSI 970A-46
    CPU: AMD Phenom II 955 - HDZ955FBK4DGM

Same board, no problems...When you right-click the white Windows speaker icon in your systray--not the larger silver&black Realtek speaker icon! (which you ought to set up to show there always together with the realtek speaker icon),  and you select "playback devices," what shows up?  When the sound box appears with the "playback" tab open, you should see an entry for "Speakers- 2 Realtek high-definition audio Default device" and there should be a large green circle through it with a big checkmark--denoting its default sound-device status.
It's possible that somehow some other device has been selected as default--with the RealTek HD audio device turned off--so check that carefully. That would explain what you are reporting--driver installed and working properly, but simply disabled in the software.
Also, I generally find it a good idea to setup you rear speaker system first and make sure its working properly before you try and set up the front connections--do those second--That's the way I do it...  (Always trying to stay ahead of a potential problem should one arise.)
Good luck!  The 892 I've found to be quite good in all respects.

  • 970a-g46 no video output issues!!!

Hello. I recently had some issues with my CPU. It would overheat when I would play games and finally I was tired of having to keep a fan propped up next to my tower to keep it cool. I decided I wanted to reapply the thermal paste. I bought some arctic 5 silver and applied it incorrectly ( it's my first time dealing with this stuff). As I was screwing the heat sink onto the processor, I applied way too much pressure to screw it in and I bent the processor. Bummed, I went to frys and picked up the AMD fx-4100. I swapped the broke. CPU for the new one and then my computer wouldn't output any video. I mean anything. So I decided after asking a few knowledgeable friends, I might need to buy a new gpu or motherboard. So I decided to buy both. I bought the MSI 970a-g46 and a dinky cheap gpu to return in the event I didn't need it. Nothing worked still! I thought at this point maybe I need a new psu. So I went back to frys and bought a new corsair CX750 watt power supply and a corsair water cooler just to be safe. Still I GET NO VIDEO OUTPUT!! I've tried I. Multiple monitors, multiple cords, multiple outlets, and I've had friends with experience in computers help me get the parts and assemble/ plug In everything in the right spot. I've booted it with and without my ram, hard drive, and cd drive, and still nothing. The next thing to do is call a priest to exorcise my case. Does anyone have any experience with this issue? I've tested the gpu and memory on my friends computer and it works fine for him. Once again, I have a new Motherboard, CPU, PSU, GPU, water cooler. I've thrown money at the problem and it still doesn't work. Is something not compatible or am I cursed to never play computer games again?

First of all please finally list all pc components like I asked for two times already. To post means it will show the first bootup message with results of the power on self-test (cpu-model and clockrate and so on). As somebody build the pc for you - if I understood you correctly - he should have tried to power it on and see if it starts at least. The question was if that has been done or not. If others just assembled parts and you did the rest it is pretty hard to tell what went wrong as you are also obviously lacking some needed knowledge.
If you are confortable with it take the pc apart and put the board with cpu and cooler mounted on a non-conductive surface. Add just basic components like a graphics card, one mem-stick, psu and connect to a display. Try it outside case then. If you are not comfortable with that better contact someone with more experience to review the machine as you set it up.

  • Windows 8 64-bit install on 970a-g46 Mainboard AHCI and NVIDIA DRIVER issues

    My Box:
    MSI 970A-G46
BIOS 1.9  (AUG 2012) (Tried 1.11 but the nightmare started then)
AMD FX-6100 (STOCK SPEED AND SETTINGS) WITH OEM HSF
    16GB PATRIOT VIPER 3 (1866) RUNNING @ (1600)
USED an EVGA 9800GT 1ST AND UPGRADED TO NVIDIA REFERENCE CARD GTX 550 Ti (1GB) WITH SAME ISSUES
90gb MonsterDigital Daytona SATA III SSD DRIVE (OS and minimal programs)
    Antec HE 550
I am at a point of pulling my hair out. I decided to upgrade my system to enhance Diablo III game play. I got a combo deal on the mainboard and cpu, and thought the speed of the game caching on a SSD would also help. The first attempt which took a little struggle was Vista 64-bit. Eventually, I was able to get the OS to work with me, and it was smooth.  Since M$ decided to offer the Windows 8 Pro upgrade for only $39.99, I thought, what do I had to lose. Well….lots of time. Now, I am not a newbie, though SSD drives haven’t been more than an interesting thought. So yes, I read many guides on everything from Trim enabled Win 7 and 8, and many other do’s and don’ts. What is driving me to the Netherlands of hell, is the installation and how buggy it has been. It boils down to drivers for the IDE/SATA/AHCI CONTROLLER. First, even thought it “sees”  the SSD on installation drive selection, after pulling the USB installation drive, the system forgets it, and there is a “problem with the boot sector”. If you load the driver from the AMD site, it lets the install occur “fine”, but there is an issue with that driver which causes an irq conflict which leads to D3 audio issues and freeze ups. I did finally get things in order (not sure which driver I choose for that), and things were smooth, except I tried to install the GTX 550 ti and that led to a corrupt file error, which the system runs a check disk and cycles the “preparing to repair” and “diagnosing PC” a few times and never allows me to enter SAFE MODE (shift+f8), to disable the NVIDIA driver that is buggy, and doesn’t allow for the NVIDIA Control Panel to install without losing video, and starts the repair cycles again… Leading to ANOTHER RE-INSTALL...
My question, for the Windows 8 Pro installation on the 970a-G46 mainboard and then after install is complete, which driver is the correct choice for the AHCI/SATA Controller?  All I find is Win7 64-bit AHCI inf’s, and SB7XX 64-bit inf’s (no SB950 INF). The Driver disk which came with the mainboard is very dated pre Win 8 stuff, ASMEDIA X106 which are not recognized by the OS as written for Win 8. AMD’s latest drivers are the ones causing the IRQ type lags and corruption.
What version, build and type of Windows 8 installations have you used on this mainboard, and what drivers allowed you install it without the above conflicts? Your input may decrease my insanity… So, thank you in advance…

I understand what you are telling me,  only the generic drivers deliver subpar results. What is the point of running those drivers instead of windows 8 certified drivers written for said devices. My last install is functioning better, but still windows update fails every attempt, the apps i install (ie. weather bug) on the start screen wont load... to me windows 8 is a big fail....but that is just my view...
OK...I also own the 970a G46, and my upgrade experience from Win7 x64 AHCI to Win8 x64 AHCI was flawless the first time.  No problems at all.  You are running an AMD chipset board with a nVidia gpu, which means that your chipset drivers are not automatically updated with every gpu driver update you do--this would happen automatically if you owned an AMD gpu because AMD includes them in its gpu driver install packages.  But--all you have to do to get the proper drivers for your motherboard is go here and download them.  You only need the *chipset drivers* from this page--you do not need the RAID drivers, of course.  That's it.  It's no big deal, and back in the days when nVidia was making motherboard chipsets you had to separately download both the motherboard chipset drivers from nVidia and the AMD gpu drivers from AMD if you did not also own a nVidia gpu.
From your description of your problems it sounds like your installation of Win8 is hosed and you need to format C:\ and clean install from scratch, anyway, so...
A note about AHCI--the *ideal* way to install the AHCI drivers is prior to installing your OS for the first time, you enter the UEFI and set "AHCI" in the appropriate place, instead of IDE, and *then* you reboot from DVD and install your OS which will automatically install the correct AHCI driver from Windows.  After the driver installation is complete you should then install the updated 970a drivers from AMD as linked above.
However, it is actually very easy to activate and install AHCI *after* you have installed Windows in normal IDE mode:
To enable AHCI in existing Windows 8 IDE Installation's
Caution: Do NOT enable AHCI in UEFI prior to making the following changes in your Registry! If you had AHCI enabled alreadyin UEFI, disable it first and restart your computer!
Use WinKey + R and type Regedit in the command line and hit the Enter key, this will open the Registration Editor.
    Go to:
        HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/services/iaStorV
right click on Start, select Modify and set Data Value to 0
Close Registration Editor and restart computer.
While booting,  open the UEFI Page and set the SATA Mode to AHCI from IDE
    Save UEFI settings and restart.
Windows will now install the AHCI drivers automatically and they should work without issues.
In order to avoid installation problems just like you have been experiencing, here is what I would do in your shoes:
    1) Set UEFI for normal IDE drive mode
    2) Reboot into IDE mode and install your OS
    3) After you have finished with the installation, you should be having no troubles in IDE mode.  Then go to the instructions above on how to properly enable AHCI *after* you have installed Windows 8 in normal IDE mode.
    4) After everything is coming up roses in AHCI mode and you are having no problems, then install the AMD chipset drivers as linked above and you are golden.
Those 4 steps worked perfectly for me the first time (the first time I got them right, that is...).
There's nothing wrong with Win8--this is strictly operator error caused by insufficient research into what AHCI is and how to properly enable it.  The Internet has some bad info on Win8 registry settings for AHCI because of the developer preview and the consumer preview versions of Win8 that Microsoft released to the public prior to the final shipping build--many "instructions" for Win8 are therefore not valid for the shipping version of Win8.  At first I made some of the same goofs that you did, but now you get to benefit from my hard-won experience...  Good luck! Should work like a charm. And, registry AHCI is done differently in Win8 than it is done in Win7 or Vista.  Also, the registry settings relative to AHCI in Windows 8 for AMD are different from the registry values that must be changed for an Intel controller.
Parenthetically, My FX-6300 (Vishera) will be here in a couple of days! Yeah!

  • 970A-G46 issue (no display, post)

    Hi everyone,
Today after work I gutted my existing system, as I purchased a new Coolermaster HAF932. Had a darkfleet case and wanted more room. Also had a new H100i CPU cooler from last blackfriday so I decided to install that, replacing a zalman cooler. Everything else remained the same.
    Reused parts
    - AMD 8150 8 core
    - MSI 970A G46
    - Gskill 8gb 1600 Ares
    - MSI 7950
    - 750w TX Corsair psu
    - 120g SSD Kingman
    - 240g SSD Seagate
    - 1x750g 1x650g WD black
    New parts
    - Coolermaster HAF932 case
    - Corsair H100i CPU cooler
The problem Is after finishing the rebuild, i cant get the system to post. No video, display, nada. Everything does power up. I have tried moving the ram stick around in different slots. Removed the battery on mobo,, waited a few minutes to reset bio. I just now gutted everything from the new case, and setup bare minimum on cardboard. Same results, no change. Everything worked fine, and there were no issues when removing the old cooler to affect the CPU. I am going to pull that and basically start over again...All i did before rebuilding earlier was blow out the PSU and gpu with a portavac(?), and wipe off parts with a dry microfiber.
If anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears. Also, yes the 8pin, 24pin, and dual 6pin+2 for gpu are seated down.
    Thanks.

Haven't tried with the old cooler, but it was a nightmare to get off aka removing retention brackets to get off. Only difference tho besides connecting to the CPU fan header, is the h100i has a USB, and takes up 1 USB header as well. Verified all connections, headers. I rebuilt it back into the case again last night, went over everything to ensure connections and sealed down.....and.. no luck, same issue.
Gonna order a MSI 970 gaming or 990fx board tonight... and hope for the best.
I once had a system years ago to display the same symptoms--I thought I'd fried something...  Just as I was about to flog myself I decided instead to re-seat everything--and it turned out I had somehow (never did figure it out) put the cpu heatsink/cooler on the wrong way...  Yes, it "snapped into place," but it was still the wrong orientation.  Was very pleased to discover that upon correction, my system powered up without a hitch.  These motherboard designs are much more robust that people might be tempted to think--and the UL ratings along with other electrical standards pretty much mean that if you inadvertently short something via an improper connection the safeties kick in and simply prevent the boot which prevents any permanent damage from taking place.  Sounds like there's simply a connection short somewhere that is preventing the boot--hope so, anyway!
I might advise booting it with a spare cpu with maybe stock aircooling just to make sure that the board is still functioning optimally.  Once you determine the board itself is fine then you can zero in on the components (which have to be your cpu/ cooling.)  Strip the system down, start simply, build & test component by component and you'll soon discover the problem.  Good luck!
I have the G46-970a but use a 6-core FX cpu and stock cooling--pleased to report the board is robust and still humming like a top two years later.  No major problems to report with it at all.  I will say that I believe this board is not the best choice for the 8-core 125W+ FX cpus--*unless* you want to go with the new "E" version of the 8-core FX that's rated at a max 95W TDP (same TDP as my FX6300 which runs at ~4.5GHz on stock voltage & cooling.)

  • 970A-G46 no beeps no video

I had 970A-G46 with FX-8320 with radeon  HD 7870 working fine for several months.
One day while I was playing a game everything went dark and there was burned
electronics smell. After that computer wasn't responding on power up. I tested PSU (CX500M)
in another system and it was working fine. I RMA-ed the motherboard and just received
    a replacement.
I put the system back toghether on a table with a small video card (I think it's radeon 5450).
Now when I power it up all 4 blue led lights on top of motherboard come up and cpu
fan is spinning. But I get no beeps (I have a small speaker plugged in into motherboard JFP2) and no video.
    Things I tried:
disconnect everything other than ram cpu and videocard
    re-seating everyting
    trying different video card
moving ram into different slots (I tried 2+4, 1+3, 1+2, and now I have one stick in slot 1).
Clear CMOS (shorting jbat1 pins 2-3 while system was off).
    removing battery for 15 min.
using a different PSU (antec TP-750C)
double checked that I have both 24pin and 8pin power connected
moving video card to a different pci-e slot.
Regardless of what I tried I have no beeps during boot and no video.
But system looks live - four blue leds on motherboard light up and cpu fan is spinning.
Does anybody have an advice ?
Can this have something to do with mismatch between FX 8320 and version of bios ?
Am I supposed to hear beeps during normal boot ? I read in one of the posts in this forum
that msi motherboards dont beep during boot anymore. Is this correct ?

you can't be sure of this until is tested somewhere.
you need to swap parts to see what is working and what not.
you need a second PC or other parts that you can use in your PC

From reading forums it looks like cpu failure is something very rare.
when electric accident was involded, everything is suspected and can be burn less than second.
so for this case wouln't be a surprice if the CPU is burned.

I want to make sure that this isn't something like old bios version not supporting FX-8320.
you can't be sure of this since you don't know current mainboard BIOS version,
and don't have another CPU to try which is supported since initial BIOS version
to verify what is the board BIOS version and is it BIOS issue, or bad CPU problem

  • NEW 970A-G46 - No Error Beeps, No Video...

I had a 785GM-E51 with a AMD Phenom II 655 Processor that stopped working on me. It turned on, the fans and hard drives started but nothing was running on the screen. After checking the GPU, memory, and power supply I found a crack in the mainboard near the CPU (no idea how it got there). When I plugged in my POST card it sat at 0000 (I was not getting any error beeps).
So I bought a new board: 970A-G46. I got everything plugged in, the CPU reseated and this time it POSTs but it stops at the code d6d6 with nothing on the screen (again I am not hearing any error beeps). I can't find this code anywhere online and was wondering if anyone has seen it before or may know what it means? I've also rechecked the memory (one stick at a time as I don't have any extra DDR 3 laying around) and GPU. My memory isn't listed as having been tested on this motherboard, but I can't see why it wouldn't work. Any help would truly be appreciated.
    Mainboard: MSI 970A-46
    CPU: AMD Phenom II 955 - HDZ955FBK4DGM
    GPU: 9600GT DDR3 1 GB
    Power Supply: Corsair TX750W
    RAM: 2 sticks of Kingston 4Gb - KHX1333C7D3K2
    Hard Drives: 2 320Gb Seagate - ST3320820AS
POST Card: Gino 4-Digit PC Mainboard POST Diagnostic Analyzer Test Card

no problem pTrick I'm happy it fixed your problem as i suspected that it was just reading the AMI error/post codes that are 2 symbol hex codes and displaying it twice on your 4 number display card!
have fun with your now working computer and thank you for reporting back  ...

  • Got 970A-G46 No support for 4 Video cards?

Hello, Got this board under the impression I would be able to run 4x individual video cards under a Linux install for work related projects, thus each card is on its own processing data. Right now I have 3 video cards working, but once I introduce the 4th video card, the motherboard starts to not work correctly as in sometimes 1 video card works, and none of them are detected, I do a reboot  then a different card is seen and that's it.
I have verified I have enough power from my PSU
I'm using x1-x16 power risers so each card is hooked up for power to reduce the strain on the motherboard itself.
I have verified that each card is non DOA, each riser is correctly working and tested.
I'm trying to figure this out so I don't gotta swap to another board which will allow me to run 4x Video cards for my work related projects at my job. Thanks.
Latest Video drivers, latest BIOS, RAM working correctly, nothing is overheating. each PCI-e slot is alive.

It is not possible to run the board with four vgas. NO 970 board is meant for that tasks. Abnormal usage for mining is not officially supported and a matter of your luck and your research to find products working with odd configs. This board features two physical X16 slots and these are obviously the only slots to support vgas. There is no X1 vga. Risers aren't supported. The maximum possible with 970A-G46 is using two vgas in the x16 slots (x8/x8 config). That means besides using two vgas for multimonitor/physx setups also SLI and Crossfire (each two-way) are possible.
Well I was using it for non-mining projects, running ocl-Hashcat. Not sure why everyone assumes its for mining coins.

  • 970a-G46 no video..

im having issues of my 970a-G46 AMD970 950 AM3+R. Not giving a video feed but gives me three beeps on speaker. I video card is:GTX NVIDIA 660ti, CPU:AMD Phenom IIx4 965 3.4ghz, Power Supply: Antec BP550 PLUS, Harddrive is Wester Digital 320gb 7200rpm. I know i have installed everything correctly when I power on i receive the four lights for CPU all the fans come on. Also CD/DVD drive also powers on. My issue i receive no video and get three beeps from motherboard. These beeps are like delayed so its beep,beep,beep.............beep,beep,beep............beep,beep,beep...... Also the RAM im using is CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800). Please HELP...

Try installing 1 stick of ram and a full cmos clear, then switch sticks if it doesnt work.
    3 beeps means ram failure.
Also, make sure you have the ram installed into the proper dimms, as indiciated in your manual for dual channel operation.

  • MSI 970A-G46 Video problem

    Well hello there!
So I have this MSI 970A-G46 motherboard, with a HIS ATI Radeon HD 5450 Graphics card and a AMD FX4100 processor with 4GB of RAM (self-built PC).
I have been running this computer for about a year now without any problem.
About 2 days ago, the problem started. It wouldn't boot, it won't show anything. Just make a Beep noise. It makes a 1 long beep and 2 short beeps. So I went to many forums and found out that this message means there is a video error and it is not able to connect to the monitor to show any other information.
So I opened my system, just made sure everything is fixed tightly and nothing is loose (nothing was loose. I even maybe cleaned it up a bit), and then closed it. It booted up! Weird right? So I went along using it until today, my (Linux) OS just hung up. I had no clue what to do. So I powered it off, and restarted it. The same issue happened again! It would just give me those beeps and won't start up. This time, I took out my graphics card, cleaned it with a brush, and placed it back. Again it booted properly! Now again my PC is fine (in fact, I'm typing this from the very same PC itself).
I am sure this is going to happen again. I have no clue why is happening. So I thought you people might have a better idea.
So why exactly is this happening and how do I avoid it?
P.S. I'm sorry if I haven't provided enough information. Please let me know if you need to know anything else.

I think the video card is somehow broken, try other PCIE slot. If possible, test the card on other PC to narrow down the issue range.

  • MSI 970a G46 - Bios issues

After recently replacing my ssd (had the same on before old one died from physical damage) and psu I cannot install windows 8.
I get to the prepairing devices phase and it stops close to 100% and goes to a black screen. I'm assuming this is the phase where the boards peripheral controllers ect are prepped and something is not finishing.
    So I tried to use the live update feature via the utility disc the board came with, it begins checking and fails at the second phase;
"Warning: could not find suitable bios rom"
I thought maybe this was because it has the most current version. I looked up my board on the site, and the only thin I get for a download is the live update 5 program, which is meant to run in the windows enviroment not pre installation.
I downloaded the live update program onto another computer and went through the program files and to no avail....cannot find a bios revision file name or anything in the program.
The bios appears to no be obtainable other than through live update which is failing.....
Anyone here know where I can pull just the bios from to put it on a stick and use the m-flash utility?
    Thanks
          Nick

I am having the same issue. There is a utility in the bios to update itself but raw bios files are not available with v2.0 and higher(that I can Find). When I boot from my bootable 256MB flash drive (the same drive I use for all bios updates). I get the same error that the OP got "The tool does not support this board". What the hell? I have probably updated hundreds of BIOSs and have never seen such crap(except once with a crappy Foxconn early-UEFI MB). Usually there are multiple methods and I can get 1 to work. If MSI just would make the raw ROM for the BIOS to do it itself.
Their website is also jacked. If I go to the US site for this board, no BIOS updates are listed, I have to go to the www site. There are also versions of the site with 970ag46 in the address but you can get to almost the same site with 970a-g46 (an added dash) but it will have different downloads. I am sick of sites in general having crappy quality control.
BTW I am trying to go from v2.5 to the just listed as being released (5/19/2015) v2.7
Also the link posted by WaltC is no longer valid. Can someone just list these instruction please.

  • MSI 970A-G46 Ram Usable Issue

So the problem is that everytime I shut down my computer and then turn it on the next day, I have to enter BIOS to change the ram usability (In Computer -> Properties) from 7.97gb to 16gb .
When I turn on my desktop and go into properties, it shows that 16gb is there but only 7.97gb in parenthesis is usable .
It's really annoying to have to enter BIOS to change this everytime and thats just it, I set it to link and 1600mhz in the BIOS and the settings don't change, I just to have physically enter BIOS every time I start and hit save changes (I don't change any settings, I just have to save it every time) .
    Mobo - 970A-G46
    Memory - 2x8gb Patriot 1600mhz
    Cpu - AMD FX-8350
    Windows 7 Ultimate

Clear CMOS: >>Clear CMOS Guide<< then try aagin without changing settings. If no help what bios version is installed?
