975X Platinum PowerUp compatible GFX card

Hello,
instead of upgrading the whole pc i decided to upgrade just the graphics adapter. It is when i realised, that i.e. a nvidia gtx 285 does not fit into the pci-e slot, when all the sata ports are in use (i can't remove the sata connectors, as they are all needed, so i didn't check whether the gtx285 fits in with no sata connector)
The card right now in the pc is a msi 8800gtx, which has almost the same length as the gtx285, but lacks the end of the big exit fan.
My question is, can anyone recommend a new and good grapghics adapter, that will fit into the 975X Platinum PowerUp edition, when all sata slots are in use.

I have a P4 CPU HT in it with 2 512mb sticks of DDR2 memory (533mhz).
I am upgrading to a Core 2 Duo 6600 CPU which has a 1066mhz FSB
What memory speed should I purchase to achieve the fastest bus speed without overclocking???
I get confused as my current memory is 533 which I guess on a Pentium 4 with HT cuts the FSB speed in 1/2 to 266mhz.
Any recommendations?
Do I need to buy Dual Channel or can I just buy 2 sticks?

The case fans create the most noise. When they are all on "low" I an hardly hear them and have to shake the mouse to see if it's on, but on medium it sounds like a "standard" computer. Not terrible, but not quite. On high they are down-right loud.

i have an ati radeon 1950xtx in my first pcie slot and the arc 1220 (sata raid)in the second pcie slot.
i dont see the card in bootup, already installed bios 7.7
tried the card in an other sytem works fine
also installed the latest firmware on the arc-1220 card
anyone have an idea which bios i should try

can you see the card in windows if you boot off the on-board controller?
I know Intel boards are picky with RAID controller cards. If the Intel RAID is enabled then a lot of add-on cards won't work. Also, even with Intel RAID disabled some still won't work. I had to flash my SiI 3132 RAID card to non-RAID for it to work as a boot device.
I've had my system not even post at all when both RAIDS are enabled. But if I get a post and it boots from the Intel side, it always sees the add-on RAID card.
Also, do you have the latest BIOS? Hopefully that will fix the issue.
Myself, I have the ARC-1210 controller and have NOT had any issues on my 975, 965, P35, or X38 boards. However, only the X38 board has allowed my card to run at full speed. The other chipsets run the 2nd PCIe X16 slot at only X4. It seems it's too slow for the controller to work properly, or there is some issues still. But my X38 boards run great. I get over 300MB/s with my 4 x 150MB Raptors in RAID0.

975X Platinum PowerUp - Windows will not Restart - only shutdown

I've had a MSI 975x Platinum Powerup for several weeks now and have a really annoying problem.
When booted and in Windows the system is pretty stable. I've even had some success at overclocking (up to 333 with an E6400). However, even when not overclocked it I select Windows Restart the machine will shutdown but will not POST on the restart. The machine just sits there with no video signal.
however if I do Windows Shutdown and the physically power the machine back on, everything seems okay.
This maybe isnt a big deal, but is very irritating. I've seen some passing reference to other members of the forums that have a similar sounding problem, but there are no details.
Could anyone tell me if this is a known issue, and whether there is a solution or not.
Is it the case that only some people have this problem or do all 975x users have it?
I've tried MSI support who just responded with a generic 'have you checked x,y,z' message.

Hi, The only thing I need to change in the bios is to turn off 'spread spectrum' and run the memory @2.2v. I have found turning off speedstep and C1E made no difference for me. At 375 if you run the memory with the 1:1 divider it will be running @750 so you can manually select 4,4,4,12 for the memory timings. This will not help the restart problem though.
Having said that, any bios after 7.2 will alter your manual memory settings and if you enter the above ( GeILs recommended settings) it will change them to 4,5,6,12.......... Another bios quirk I'm afraid!
To get around this you can go back to bios 7.1 which leaves these settings alone. What I have found works well is to leave the divider option on 'AUTO' . This applies the 1:1.25 ratio, and leaves memory timings on 4,4,4,12 with the ram running @875 when on 350 FSB. I run this setting @ 375, but I put the memory timings on 'SPD' as the ram is then running @938. You can run up to 2.3v through this ram according to OCUK where I bought the memory which may help you get up to these speeds or tighten the timings a bit.
380 is about the fastsest mine will boot at and adding more vcore (up to 1.4v) made no difference to this. I have tried upping the pcie voltage (which is the chipset voltage on this board) to 1.6v, but this didn't help either! Some people seem to get over 400FSB easily and others seem to have hit the same wall as me. People who can attain the high FSB speeds don't seem to suffer from the restart problems either! WEIRD!!

Unable to run 800Mhz memory on 975X Platinum PowerUp

hi,
I can't get my MSI board to recognize my 800mhz memory, it runs at 667mhz although it's 2x1GB Corsair XMS2-6400 4-4-4-12 2.1v. If I run CPU-Z, the SPD shows everything correctly, but I had to change the timing values manually, it defaults to 5-5-5-15 if I select "by SPD" in the BIOS. I'm running version 7.2 of the BIOS.
I'm pretty much a newbie when it comes to overclocking and tweaking BIOS settings, I just want it run at the correct speed and preferably not overclock at all.

MSI 975X platinum powerup question

Hi,
I've got a 975X powerup motherboard with a 7600GT graphics card in the primary 16x slot. (Its a 16x graphics card)
The graphics card has a big fan on it which covers one of my 1x slots and the other one is in use.
I'd like to use the other 16x slot for a USB 3.0 PCI-express card. (a 1x card). Is it possible ?
I know the secondary slot's main purpose is for Crossfire, but can the secondary slot be used for other PCI-Express cards ?
I want to be sure. I don't want to blow anything on my board.

No, as far as I know it is not limited to video cards. Appart from the age difference between board/chipset and USB controller, a further question remains regarding the lane assignment. With only one PCI-E x16 card installed, the primary PCI-E slot will get x16 lanes and the secondary PCI-E x16 slot x0 [x16/x0] lanes. If there would be a second video card installed, the chipset's PCI-E switching logic will switch to bifurcation mode, re-assigning x8 of the formerly x16 lanes of the first slot to the secondary slot [x8/x8]. A x15/x1 mode is not possible. So, the question is, whether or not the PCI-E switching logic allows x1 lanes on the secondary slot [letting x7 lanes left unused].
I just had a look at the Intel datasheet for the 975X chipset [the chapter on PCI Express functionally]. I have to admit, that I only skipped through and did not really read it thouroughfully. But from what I can tell, there is no definate restriction regarding the bifurcation logic of the PCI Express controller. However, if you have the time, take a look yourself:

Start reading on page 223 and then onward. The functionally of the PCI Express switching logic is covered here. To be honest, Intel does not seem very clear on the matter either. Looking at the introductory paragraph on page 21, the title is "PCI Express* Graphics Interface" and not simply "PCI Express* Interface". In addition to that it says "Bifurcated PCI Express* Graphics Supported Features" instead of "Bifurcated PCI Express* Graphics Supported Features" on the same page.
So, again, I guess the only thing that makes sense suggesting is to simply give it a try and see how it goes.

975x Platinum PowerUp Dual Boot Issue

Hello -
I have a 975x Plat. PowerUp and dual boot Linux and Windows XP. This process works fine on BIOS 7.1, but fails to boot the Windows disk on BIOS 7.4 and newer. The disk still works, it just can't be started by the Linux bootloader (grub).
I spent a lot of time working on this as a grub issue, but in the end the only thing that affects the problem is revision of the BIOS I am using. (e.g., flash 7.4, Windows does not boot, reboot and flash 7.1, Windows boots).
I also get an issue where I cannot eject the CD drive on warm boot under the same conditions (like a BIOS boot disc, or a Windows boot disc). Works fine on 7.1 not on 7.4 or newer.
I have all 4 ports on the ICH7 controller used for hard drives, and the JMicron controller used for a SATA DVD drive. The issue occurs in IDE or AHCI mode (currently using AHCI mode).
Are these known problems? Are there known fixes? I would like to use a newer BIOS because I have an MS USB keyboard that does not work in DOS mode with BIOS < 7.4 (need keyboard to select OS at boot time).

975X Platinum PowerUp - Nvidia SLI

I have a couple of question having a couple of these boards now. Both with 8800GTS 640Mb graphics.
1) The board was designed for crossfire, however has anyone tried SLI with Nvidia cards will this work (I have my doubts but thought I would ask)
2) The JMicron controller I'm using set in bios as IDE (second IDE connector on motherboard), The manual says this only supports one master device, can I connect a slave?

There is no native SLI support on the 975X Crossfire Chipset. However, some people succeeded to operate two GeForce 6 and 7 series cards in SLI mode using modded drivers. I have no idea if there are modded drivers that allow two 8800 GTS cards to run in SLI mode and even if there were nobody will be able to guarantee that it will work without problems. In any case the performance will be lower than running the same cards on a true SLI chipset.

According to the manual you cannot (or should not). I have read a few threads in which people claimed that they had no problems attaching two drives as master/slave to the IDE2-port. JMicron Chipset is already a little bit tricky to begin with, and I am guessing that, considering the fact that many people already have problems getting one drive to work properly, it would probably better to look for a SATA drive and hook it up to one of the Intel SATA ports.

975x Platinum PowerUp - Wake on LAN problem...

for TV digital cable recording with my DboxII receiver (Neutrino Linux) I need Wake-on-Lan. It work flawlessly with my old ASUS A7N266-C: PC as streaming server, woken up by the pre-programmed DBox by a "Magic Packet" containing the MAC-adress of the LAN-card. (So I don't have to program any timers on the PC, just have to be sure that it is in standby or hibernation mode.)
The new setup is the same as the old, I've only changed the PC's MAC-Adress in the DBox-setup. The DBox is connected via router.
What I've done: I activated PME in the Intel LAN properties, and activated "resume by directed packets and Magic Packet". I allowed the device to wake up WindowsXP and set the BIOS to resume by PCI and PCI-E events (seems as if PCI-E is the necessary setting for the onboard LAN).
What happens, is, that it doesn't work with Magic Packets. It almost works with this "directed packets" setting - but the problem is, that the PC only stays in hibernation mode for around 15 seconds - even if the Dbox is switched off. Maybe the router does something to wake the LAN card? DHCP is already off...
Has anyone further knowledge about WOL with this board? The next thing I'll try is, if it works better with my previous Realtek PCI card. But it would be a pity to waste a PCI slot for that....
Power-on-LAN is impossible with this board, I guess?

Every magic packet is the same - the mac addy 3 times, so it shouldn't matter how it's being generated. If you want to test your waking app, plug another computer into the same network cable as the 975 system and send it's magic packet.
Another thing to be sure of is to make sure your power is off, magic packets will sometimes not wake a sleeping computer - from S1, S3, or S9

975X Platinum PowerUp - PS/2 Mouse wouldn't work with USB Keyboard!!!

I cannot get my PS/2 Mouse move with when USB Keyboard is connected. Both PS/2 Mouse and Keyboard work fine together. Similarly, both USB Mouse and Keyboard are OK. Any solution??? Would be grateful for any assistance. Thanks

Also, many of these people identify their recent problems as USB wireless mice problems, which is how both my build PCs were being run. By the way, IE7 has already been identified as causing driver problems with some hardware, e.g., older model scanners.

975X Platinum PowerUp 2*SATA/RAID and 1*IDE CDROM configuration help

I have latest official BIOS version 7.3
I’m trying to setting up the bios to handle 2 SATA harddisk in RADI 0+1. Furthermore I have IDE CDROM connected to the IDE1.
I have no problem setting up the 2 SATA harddisk as RAID 0+1 and it works perfect.
Unfortunately I don’t know how to setup the bios to make the IDE CDROM drive visible in windows.
Please help?
(I have tried to enable the JMicron, but then I can’t boot, because the mainboard loses the RAID controller. I have read that this has been a problem with BIOS version 7.2 and 7.3)

This is a test to see how far I can push my RAM, not the CPU! Therefore I have to use dividers
Ok, listen up. Bios 7.16 seems to have fixed for me the problem I had when running dividers 3:4 (1.33 bios setting), 2:3 (1.5) and 3:5 (1.66).
I did some testing earlier with the 2:3 divider/ratio too keep my FSB low so that I can push the RAM beyond my previous 470Mhz at 4:5 (1.25). Anyway, with a combination of clockgen and memset I can get DDR-1120 at reasonable ram timings...

Once again I encounter the dreaded 375Mhx FSB wall on my mobo so at the moment I can't push my RAM any further than 560Mhz with 2:3. I would use the 1:2 divider but there's a problem. The lowest the FSB can be set to is 266Mhz. With a 1:2 divider that means that RAM has to boot at 533Mhz. The SPD setting for tRD (read delay) is too tight for 533Mhz with my RAM and so it won't boot. If the bios engineers could just add options to adjust the rest of the RAM timings beyond the basic 4 then I'd be able to relax the TRD before boot and use the 1:2 divider.
Seeing as I can't clock my CPU or RAM any higher due to the 375Mhz FSB limit I'm gonna put in the other 2Gb of the same ram, install WinXP 64Bit and see how 4Gb can overclock compared to 2Gb on this mobo

But it worked for me with this version.
Without changing the voltages, I did not reach a higher FSB than before.
So I set the CPU to 1,37V and the memory to 2,1V.
Result: I was able to increase the FSB up to 340MHZ, at 345 Windows freezes (tested with 2 instances of Prime95 and ClockGen). For me this result is sufficient, I only want to use 333MHZ FSB, because of my memory. Although some users report that they reach 400MHZ FSB without raising the voltages for CPU and memory.
Now I will find out, if I can lower the voltages.....
