975X PUE: SATA vs IDE Combinations: 2+2, 4, or 1+3?

Hello,
I searched but didn't find info.  For a new build with a 975X PUE, what is the optimal configuration of IDE/SATA drives.  I want to have a configuation like:
DRIVE                 PURPOSE                    SATA or IDE?
C:                     VISTA OS                            ?
D:                     Data drive                   2 SATA, RAID1
E:                     Backup for Data                    ?
My question is:   Should I use SATA for drives C and E or IDE?   Or one of each?   Is there a general rule for which is preferred?   All things being equal, I prefer SATA since cables are smaller.
Thx.
Scott
PS   C and E will likely be single-drive, non-RAID.

I thought perhaps there would be a difference data rates between the IDE/SATA, which arise only when you reach a specific # of SATA drives--in which case it might be better to begin using IDE.  Looks like I was wrong.  Thx.
Scott
SATA II 300 has 3.0 Gbit/sec available per port, so the number of SATA ports used should not make a difference. There is a theoretical advantage in using SATA, as it is a serial connection instead of a parallel connection with PATA.
Furthermore, because of your RAID 1 setup, you will be using AHCI mode for the onboard Intel controller. The Intel Matrix Storage driver (used for AHCI mode) might give you a couple percents extra drive performance over an IDE interface, even when using single drives.
So SATA would be the way to go...

  • 975X PUE SATA RAID Windows XP Blue Screen Install

    Hi,
I've just purchased a new MSI 975X PUE motherboard and am trying to install Windows on it.
I have connected 2x WD Raptor 36GB drives, and set them up in a RAID 0 array using the Ctrl+I RAID BIOS utility. I have set the SATA config in the BIOS to RAID mode, and turned off the other SATA controller... The RAID BIOS detects the array ok after it has been set up, and shows it as OK.
When I boot from a Windows XP SP2 CD I press F6 and choose the RAID Driver for ICH7R RAID. Windows tells me that it already has a driver but this version is newer, so I say to use the one on the floppy (I have tried without doing this and Windows does not detect any Hard Drives at all).
Once I have loaded the drivers it continues loading the other drivers for the setup, and then gets to "Loading Windows Setup", here is waits for a minute or so and the blue screens.... The stop code is 0x7B (INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE)...
I have upgraded the BIOS from 7.0 to 7.1 (not 7.2 yet as I have read about problems with it).
I've tried various versions of the drivers from different locations, and each time it blue screens in exactly the same place... I'm beginning to get very annoyed with this as I shouldn't be expected to find my own drivers when there are ones supplied on the CD...
Is anyone able to suggest what I could do?
    Thanks
[EDIT] Also I have tried an install of Windows Vista Beta and that installed fine using the drivers from the CD...

I must say again that the problem is located in the memory modules. As suggested by Hans before, try running memtest86 first,
    http://filexoom.com/files/2006/11/1/41824/memtest86%2B-1.65.floppy.zip
and sometimes even if tests runs fine, doesn't mean that memory is OK. It just might be that that type of memory doesn't fit within your MB. As I mention before, my friend was using Corsair for his MB(getting the message INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE), and after replacing with A-Data(definitely lower quality memory), everything went fine. So, try with another memory.
As for Murphyman, when you use the yellow connector, you are using the Jmicron controller, witch asks for RAID drivers before you use the device installed on it. The blue IDE controller is controlled by Intel's ICH7DH, and no RAID driver is need. So, try connecting the DVD drive on the blue connector, and see if will work.

  • 975X Platinum SATA HD, IDE disaster.

I tried looking around the forums and couldnt really find any mentioning of my problem so here I go,
I just finished building my new machine:
    Intel E6600 @2.4Ghz
    Corsair Dominator 2GB DDR2 800
    nVidia XFX 8800 GTX
    X-Fi Soundblaster XtremeMusic 7.1
    WD Raptor 150GB (SATA)
    Seagate Barracude 250GB (SATA)
    Sony DVD Burner (IDE)
    LG DVD Burner (IDE)
Here is my problem, I installed the OS on the 150GB Raptor, from the begining of the installation the Sony Drive was being detected but wasn't booting the XP Pro disc, so I switched to the LG and unplugged the Sony (the LG wasent being detected when the Sony was plugged in) then once I finally got done with updates, and drivers I went on to reconnect the Sony (as master) and the Seagate. But it would boot XP, so I unplugged the Seagate and it went right through, but when I got into windows I found out that it was only showing up one drive, and it wouldn't even read the media I inserted. I later tried plugging in my old WD Drive (old machine) thinking my seagate was dead. But it didn't detect that ether...
I don't know if its a known issue and a simple BIOS flash will clear it up. But I usually stay away from flashing my BIOS unless I am sure its going to fix my problem.
Please any help/comment is appreciated I am going nuts since I was planning on selling my old machine and I need to get my data from my old HD into the seagate... plus it would be nice to fix the drive issue aswell....

Probably not.  I am using the German Edition of Windows XP that is why I can't tell you the exactly what you have to look for but I will try anyway:
One if the many options in the system settings menu has to to with Computer Management (at least this is the name of that option if I translate it from German).  When you open computer management you should find a section that has to do with drive management only.  Try to find it and see if the drive is listed there.  You may have to activate it or assign a drive letter before Windows will be able to use it.
omg... I feel like such a noob... I forgot since I didnt have the seagate plugged in when I installed windows, I never formatted it so windows wasent assigning it a drive letter....
    thanks alot guys.

  • SATA to SATA transfer speed for 975x PUE

hi guys, i'm using this 975x PUE currently and having this problem. when i tried to copy large data files from a SATA HDD to another SATA HDD it always takes very long time to complete. ofcoz both HDDs are internal and no RAIDS card installed.
eg : copy files about 160GB size take more than 12hrs..
i think it shouldnt take such a long time to copy such huge file. this dont happen to me in my previous pc. can anyone advise pls?

thanks hoshigami, to be honest your pc spec is as good as anyone else but i hope you have sata2 hdd and not sata1 as they are much faster than sata1 when it comes to transferring of data. also i  assume your ddr2 is ddr2 800.
when i cloned about 30gb from one hdd to another hdd it took about 25 minutes therefore 160 should not take more than 2 hours in fact much less as cloning is slower process than just copying..
as far as bios is concerned there is no parameter in which it can speed up transfer of data but what you can do is go into bios then click on default setting then click yes and save and exit. and also before copying you defrag your hdd a few times or use speeditup [link below] for further defraging.
    http://www.geardownload.com/system/speeditup-free-highly-recommended.html
also do you have  FAT32 or NTFS file management., also your hdd 7200 RpM or 5400 RPM.
i think your prob  lies with the fact you try to copy 160gb in one go by doing that large chunk of data is scattered on your hdd without being defraged.
i would first copy about 20 to 30gb then defrag hdd a few times then copy further 30gb and defrag....and so on..
to be honest i can not think of anything else . lets see what others have to say. good luck

  • Favor to persons with bios 7,6 on 975x pue

Blank I would want to ask the persons who have the 975x pue with bios 7,6 to activate the jmicron in ide in order seeing if she works with chip intel.
Thanks to all those who will make this pleasure me.

Okay Lucabis, here is my test report:
I am using BIOS 7.61 BETA.
I have no drives attached to the JMicron ports, but I enabled the JMicron Controller in BIOS.
I have two SATA hard drives connected to the Intel ICH7DH Controller in Non-RAID mode, and I switched the Intel Controller to RAID mode in BIOS.
After that, I rebooted the system.  The RAID BIOS status screen appeared and my two SATA Drives were listed as non-RAID disks.  I was able to access the RAID BIOS by pressing <CTRL + I> without problems.
I will not go any further with this because I don't want to risk data corruption.  If this sounds like it is worth a try, please go and test it yourself.
Now, let's try Yahoo Babel Fish on this one (Italian you said?):

  • Disabling JMicron on 975x PUE?

    Hey all,
I was reading some 975x PUE overclocking tips in the OC forum a few weeks ago, and it said something about disabling JMicron. When I went to go do that, I couldn't figure it out...
I'm on BIOS 7.4, and it seems that JMicron is doing nothing for me except slow my boot... does anyone have any quick tips?
    Thanks

The JMicron Chipset/Controller is there to offer you a 2nd IDE-port and a 5th SATA Port (that is all it does).  If you don't need any of these two ports you can safely disable that thingy.

  • Speedfan Configuration for 975X PUE !

Does anyone please have a link to where I can download the Speedfan configuration for the 975X PUE ?
    Thankyou

    Hello Jack The Newbie,
Each motherboard has to be configured differently within the Speedfan settings in order for the software to give correct readings.
The Speedfan website provides configuration settings for hundreds of different motherboards from all manufacturers but not the MSI 975X. I have no idea how to configure Speedfan myself and so was hoping to be able to download the settings from somewhere !
    Thankyou for the post

  • MSI 975X PUE Power Connector !

I've just noticed that the 975X has a 24 pin ATX connector. My Antec Truepower 480W PSU only has a 20 pin connector.
Is this an adaptor available or will I have to dig deep and buy a new PSU ?
If a new PSU, then any recommendations !
    Thankyou

    Quote
The Antec article is very interesting and basically seems to say that it is OK to use a 20 pin ATX supply on a motherboard with 24 pin ATX connector. This is contrary to the link in a previous post !
Not really.  Here is a passage from the arcticle the other link did point you to:
    Quote
The 24 pin connector is actually just the 20 pin connector with 4 extra pins added on the end. The original 20 pins were unchanged. The extra 4 pins are not separate rails. They're just extra lines to provide more current to the same rails. On every motherboard I've seen, the extra lines for ground, 3.3, 5, and 12 are just connected to the other lines on the same rail from the 20 pin connector. I've never heard of exceptions and it doesn't make sense for motherboard makers to create any. As a result, you can plug a 20 pin cable into a 24 pin motherboard and it will work just fine. At least, it will for a while. They added those extra 4 pins for a reason. When you plug a 20 pin cable into a 24 pin connector you're not providing the extra current carrying capacity which may be needed by the motherboard. If your motherboard's current requirements are low enough then it will work properly with only a 20 pin power cabled plugged in. But if the motherboard draws enough current, then you can overheat the 20 pins you're using on the 24 pin connector.

I assume that the 4 pin connector next to the first PCI-E graphics slot on the 975X PUE board takes the same connector/supply as the one that supplies power to the IDE [...] drives !
Yes, it is the same connector you usually use for IDE drives:
Floppy drives usually use this kind of connector:

    Jack the Newbie,
I've seen the spec. The OCZ I recommended will run his pouter.
It probably will. But I am a little afraid that the 450W-PSU you recommended might come close to its limits on the 26A/+12V-rail.

  • Problem of SATA burner blu-ray drive vs IDE ribbon in the mac. Would all I need is a SATA to IDE/IDE adaptor?

I purchased an MCE blu-ray burner a while back in 2010 and am only now installing it, and am running into the problem of SATA drive vs IDE ribbon in the mac.
Would all I need is a SATA to IDE/IDE adaptor? Are there any details I need to know?

that one will definetly not work, notice how theres no place for you to hook your power connector in there?  going IDE to SATA is something I am yet to find an adaptor that really works well yet( that being said i only tried once.) that being said, you can definetly use somethign like the thing i link to below assuming you have a free HDD bay.   you can use it to bring one of your HDD sata ports AND power, up to your optical drive bay.  That way, theres no convertion, only a quick little extention.  They come in varying lengths from 3", (prob too short), to 8" (the one i linked to, might just barely be long enough, maybe still too short) to 20", more than long enough.
    Good luck

  • MSI 975X PUE + MSI StarHub 7-port USB 2.0 + Windows XP SP3 = Fail

    Hi,
today I bought a MSI StarHub and connected it to my computer with MSI 975X PUE and Win XP SP3. But XP does not recognize the hub. On the same computer I have Win 7 installed. There the hub works very well. Any hints to get the hub working on XP? I have same problems with my mouse, logitech G500. It works on WIN 7 and does not work on XP. What can I do?
    Regards

There was no driver for the StarHub included and I did not find a driver to download on the msi homepage. When running Win7 the hub is shown as Generic USB Device in the device manager on xp it is a USB 2.0 HUB [mtt] and I do not have the driver for this.
I installed the logitech G500 driver on both, win xp and win 7, but xp does not recognize it.

  • 1 SATA + 3 IDE Config help please

    Hi, I have an 865PE - Neo2 - LS.
Currently I have 1 SATA HD configured as the first boot device  + a CDRW and a DVD on IDE2.
I would like to add a second standard IDE HD for some extra storage but try as I might I cannot get the bios to recognise the second drive.
I guess what I am asking is this:
1 is it possible to have the following config on this board
    1 SATA
    1 IDE HD
    1 IDE DVD
    1 IDE CDRW
    2. If so, could some kind soul tell me how......PLEASE
    Thanks
    Aus

    AUS,
I personally have the following drives running on my MSI 865PE Neo 2 S mobo without any problem...:
    1 x DVD-Writer(IDE 1, Master),
    1 x DVD(IDE 1, Slave),
    1 x Seagate 80GB HDD(IDE2, Master),
    1 x Maxtor 80GB HDD(IDE2, Slave),
    1 x Seagate 120GB HDD(SATA 1).
    I'm using this config:
    ATA OnChip Operate Mode: Native
    ATA Config: SATA
    PATA Keep Enabled: Yes
    PATA Channel Selection: Both
And running in Win2k SP 4, AMIBIOS v1.0
Check and make sure that you are not using any old IDE cable for the HDD and make sure that you did set to either Master or Slave mode, not Cable Select and make sure that you are getting power from the +12v molex connector that plugged to the HDD.

  • SATA or IDE

    Hi there !
    simple question for you :
what is the difference between SATA and IDE, for Hard drvives ?
Is one of the interfaces quicker than the other ?
    Thanks !

    Ok first off
    1. What is Serial ATA?
    2. Yes Serial ATA is faster and allows better air flow with SATA cables.
and most of the time will offer "Raid"

  • 955X Platinum - use SATA as IDE or RAID ?

    Hello everyone,
I just received my new MSI 955X Platinum motherboard today. The boot-up screen looks quite horrible! Is there any way to change it?
Now, I want to install Windows XP on my WD 36GB SATA 10,000 RPM hard drive. What will give me optimal performance - setting the SATA in IDE  mode or in RAID mode ? From what I understand, setting it as an IDE HDD does not need the RAID driver floppy during the intial stages of Windows XP setup. RAID mode will require the RAID driver floppy.
Also, can the VIA SATA controller be mapped as IDE as well ?
    Thanks for your time.
    Regards,
    Kamran

Yes, you can disable the boot up screen in the BIOS. But if you thought of changing it to something else, hmm you must hack the BIOS code, which I don't recommend.
1 SATA drive? definitely set as IDE. RAID is for stacking up multiple HDDs together as a single logical drive.

  • P35 Neo2 BIOS Settings to run Dual Boot SATA and IDE HD's

    Hi,
I was having intermittent problems with a Gigeabyte so upgraded M/B.
I have an IDE "caddy" with 2 Dual boot HD's (Linux Grub booting XP on sda1 and Fedora9 on sda2), and had no problems with either HD's on old M/B.
The old M/B also had  SATA sockets which I installed a 250GB drive as my main setup.  Dual boot again with same setup.  I set the SATA to "auto" and it detected and ran when no IDE caddy was inserted.
Everything ran OK but I had very intermittent CRC failures that I could not isolate, so I upgrade 2 days ago.
Without inserting any IDE drives I can boot the SATA drive OK into Linux OK  (it also detects an ext3 partition on a seperate /backup partition so the IDE interface works).
If I now try and boot the XP on my SATA drive,  I get the dreaded blue screen.
I assume this is due to me having XP installed without the AHCI support as detailed in other (long) thread showing how to overcome this problem!?
I would also like to know if and I can just boot from my IDE drive (with no SATA's connected),   because even though it seems to detect the PATA HD OK,  I cannot get it to boot from either of them!  I know these HD's have not changed as I have checked both of them on the SATA OS and both Logical volumes are still there and the relevant boot flags are both set.
Even though I have a bit of a complex setup,  this may well be a very simple case of BIOS settings (sorry).
    FYI:
I have a A7345 IMS V1.8 012408 BIOS and my two IDE drives are both dual boot with XP on the first partition.
Both Linux partitions are formatted using Logical Volume Management  (LVM).
    Thanks for your time
Any help/pointers would be appreciated as I am not absolutely sure that the M/B is functional or not.

Thanks for the info,  I am now a bit clearer as to what is happening!
I removed known good IDE HD from caddie and put it directly on the IDE cable (after removing the old non LVM linux IDE disk that was on it).
The newly connected HD was initialized OK and I can see both SAT and IDE disks listed with F11.
On trying to boot from the IDE,  it starts up and decompresses the image,  BUT cannot seem to find the LVM Volume group 03 (which is where my /boot partition is located).
It then gives in and after a while,  boots back to the SATA OK (where the bootloader is also inside the LVM so I can't see why the LVM IDE disk is a problem but the LVM SATA boots OK).
I do remember (late last night) trying with just IDE drive and of course it just hung because it did not have any alternative to boot!
    Any other observations/suggestions?
Apologies its late here and I will not be back for a few hours!
    Regards
