975X quad core question

Hey guys, I have a 975X Platinum Power Up Edition, and I'm trying desperately to avoid having to replace it. From what I can tell, the Q6600 or Q6700 (depending on which I can find the best price on), is the best CPU that the board supports (65nm limitation is killing me!).
Here's my question: do I need to flash the BIOS to add quad core support, or is it strictly a plug and play deal? I can't recall ever having updated the BIOS, so I actually don't even know which version I'm running. I just checked it, and I didn't see "BIOS Version 7.0" or anything, so... ?

This is what my screen shows me at first (cut off number is BIOSv1.06.63):
And then, for about 0.2 seconds, this flashes onscreen:
And that's it.
That seems to suggest that I need BIOS 7.6. Is that correct?

  • Quad Core Question

We are building a new system. The last system we built was a dual quad core with 8 Gigs of ram, Quadro FX 3500, and XP 64-bit. Every time we opened After Effects and Photoshop it crashed and locked up the system. We changed the OS to XP 32-bit, dropped the ram down to 4 Gigs. The system is working better, but not where we would like it.
On the second machine we do not want to have the same issues. Does anyone know what we can uses to get the most bang out of this system. After Effects CS3, Premier Pro CS3, and Photoshop CS3 are the main programs we are using.

David has a point, though MS will support XP64 with patches and hotfixes until 2011. Unfortunately switching to Vista 64 will not guarantee any betterment. The point everything is pivoted around is driver support and on the system you were experiencing problems, very likely the graphics card is the culprit. NVidia is always behind in supporting x64 systems and in addition, it really seems to depend on the specific sub-model of a card. If you search this forum for threads on issues with NVidia cards or Vista for only the last week, you will find several threads... In that light, giving concrete advice is rather difficult. I can only report that I have a FX5500 on a dual quadcore E5345 and the system runs perfectly for a year now. However, this has been a prefab computer of our local Fujitsu-Siemens brand R-series workstations, so I wouldn't really expect otherwise. ;-) Perhaps you should consider taking that same route. I can reasonably assure you that HP workstations are just as well thought out and put together.

  • 3.33GHz Quad-Core Question

I'm wondering why does my 3.33GHz processor show as a 3.32GHz in "About my Mac" Also does anyone know exactly what intel processor this is? W3580? Thanks

The speed is nominal because not all crystal oscillators generate exactly the same frequency. Your processor's speed is based on the bus clock times a multiplier. If the bus clock is off by a slight amount and the multiplier is fixed then it results in a slightly different clock speed for the CPU. For example if your bus clock were 1.066 GHz and the clock multiplier is 3, then the CPU clock speed is 3.198 GHz. But if the bus clock were 1.067 GHz then the CPU clock speed is 3.201 GHz. Your model uses a 1.333 nominal bus clock with a 2.5 multiplier which results in a 3.33GHz CPU clock speed. If your bus clock were 1.328 GHz, then the CPU clock speed becomes 3.32 GHz. The ratings you read are essentially "nominal" but may vary slightly from machine to machine. They will also tend to be changed by changes in power supply voltages and frequency.

  • Performance Question:Two 2.8GHz Quad-Core VS Two 3.0GHz Quad-Core?

I am in the market for a Mac Pro and I want to know if there is a huge performance difference between the dual 2.8 quad-cores and the dual 3.0 quad-cores. I do video editing, web sites and graphic design, as well as gaming. Is 200 more mhz really worth $800? Please let me know what is a better investment?

    Hello,
Your question is one seen often here.
I would agree that the difference in time-to-completion for projects such as video editing is important. But one has to think in terms of seconds saved - per project. In other words, if one saves "10 seconds" per project using the higher speed processors, does that represent a significant savings at the end of a year's worth of projects? That of course depends on how many "extra" projects get completed (and paid for). Most individual Mac users agree that it's not that significant a difference when it comes to profits gained vs extra cost of the machine.
Granting: If one is talking about a company with 500 people running high end rendering projects, the cumulative difference is significant because there'll be that many more "extra projects" completed over a given period. It's just obvious: increasing productivity on that scale is significant.
Video gaming is in an entirely different category: "personal preference." I think it's fine if a gamer finds the "mightier" machine provides a better experience. But it won't help you "win" a single video game. As one who was active in the Muscle Car Era of the 1960s, I think that was much like what we're seeing with video gamers today. If having a 450 hp muscle car was itself a status symbol, it still only meant that, sometimes, a street drag race could be won by "a bumper length" over a 400 hp car. No one can say they have the "right" to decide how you spend your money - it's up to you if the prestige is worth it to you.
Basically, given the above, I have to agree with Rick (and many others) on this question.

  • New NI CompactRIO calls the question, "¿Quien is mas macho, Intel quad-core Atom or 4-year-old i7?"

Perhaps you remember the Saturday Night Live TV sketch from 1979 where Bill Murray played a game show host who asked the show’s titular question, “¿Quien es mas macho?”
Today, Matt Spexarth, Principal Product Manager for Embedded Systems at National Instruments (NI), called the NI CompactRIO controller introduced this week at NI Week—the model cRIO-9039, which pairs a 1.91GHz, quad-core Intel Atom CPU with a Xilinx Kintex-7 325T FPGA—the highest-performance CompactRIO ever released. That includes the existing cRIO-9082 controller, which pairs a 1.33GHz, dual-core Intel i7 CPU and a Xilinx Spartan-6 LX150 FPGA. So both the processor and the FPGA have been upgraded in the new CompactRIO controller. The NI cRIO-9039 controller es mas macho.
NI Model cRIO-9039 Controller in an 8-slot CompactRIO Chassis
The new NI CompactRIO controller runs security-enhanced NI Linux Real-Time. It has an SDHC card slot for non-volatile storage and can directly operate a local, graphical UI (user interface) as a human-machine interface. Another key performance feature, noted Spexarth, is a bank of DDR3 SDRAM attached directly to the Kintex-7 FPGA to allow the FPGA to directly handle large data sets, to process large FFTs for example.
As with the entire line of NI CompactRIO controllers, you program the cRIO-9039 controller using NI’s LabVIEW graphical development environment with its many add-on modules including LabVIEW FPGA. In addition, the new CompactRIO controller maintain compatibility with the many CompactRIO plug-in I/O hardware modules.

    Whygirl,
it reads as though an internal disk upgrade (and possibly a battery replacement) would suffice for you, and those two together would be far less expensive than a new MacBook Pro. Yes, you could install either a HDD or a SSD in place of its current internal HDD. You could look at the Hitachi Travelstar 7K1000 as an example of a suitable 1 TB HDD; SSDs are more expensive per unit of storage than a HDD, but might be worth the extra cost if your apps are disk-bound. (I put a Samsung 840 PRO into my 13-inch Mid 2010 model, and it’s been working well.) Note that Chrome might be responsible for the extra heat (and the extra heat is responsible for the increased volume from the fans kicking in); Chrome isn’t optimized for use on 64-bit versions of OS X, like 10.8.5.

  • 975X Platinum PUE Quad Core?

On MSI's product page for the 975X Platinum PUE it states it supports QuadCore. Is this true? Has bios updates allowed for this to be possible? I truely hope so , that way I have more upgradability with the board.

    NrthnStar5,
the board does support quad core. But you will need newer BIOS to correctly recognize the CPU.

  • Question about Quad Core 2.93 and Octo-Core 2.66

OK, so forgive me cause I am asking a question that has been asked a zillion times. I have read and searched and read and searched, however, I still don't quite understand a few things.
I am a huge Aperture user. I shoot the Canon 1Ds Mark III and use photoshop a lot as well.
I am still confused. What is the difference in performance between a
loaded 8 GIGs ram Quad Core 2.93 or
    a middle 8-Core 2.66 12 gigs RAM
I read benchmarks after benchmarks, but most use games for their stats and that does not help me. I read the boards, but it is all so confusing what people think. I went to the Apple store, and of course, they immediately said 8-core! hahaha.
I hear an 8-core can be slower at single core apps than a quad core and so on and on.
    please help me!

    Hi-
this question si about what the ** is the difference between a Quad 2.93 and a Octo 2.66.
    The question is pretty vague.
Maybe asking "What benefit do I get from an octo core as opposed to a quad core?" would be better.
To understand the main difference, and the main benefit of an octo core over a quad core, understanding the concept of multithreading is necessary.
Basically, Multithreading is the ability of a system to break tasks up into portions (threads), and assign these portions across multiple CPU cores, enabling the calculation, thus the process, to be be completed faster than if the entire process were to be done on a single core.
Because of this, more cores allows for faster completion of system functions. Yes, it's faster.
Currently, some software isn't quite up to snuff in supporting/utilizing multithreading abilities of multi core systems.
But, that is changing, and changing rapidly.
Soon, all software will be able to utilize the multithreading ability of a multi core system, and greater increases in system performance will be realized.
In the upcoming OS 10.6 release, further enhancement of multithreading operation will be seen.
What this all means to the end user, say in Photoshop, is, work will fly, complex enhancements will be almost instantaneous, and productivity can be increased.
Along with the multi core, multi channel memory will also allow for the use of larger amounts of RAM, with out the bottlenecking that occurs in singe channel systems.
    Again, everything works faster.
The octo core allows for more physical RAM, which, even now, but more so in the near future, always helps with memory hungry applications like Photoshop.
Basically, the biggest difference between the two machines, is the octo core is more future proof- that is, it will support future software enhancements better than the quad core.
And, we are talking +near future+.
I believe the Quad is limited to 8 gigs RAM, not 16.
Both machines can use 4GB DIMMs, so the quad core can use 16GB and the octo core can use 32GB.
Buying RAM from a trusted third party vendor can reduce costs greatly, without affecting the Apple warranty.
Again, Apple employees are telling you what the book says, what they currently offer, not what can be done.
Apple store said SDD in a Mac Pro is not a good idea at all. Again, more conflicting suggestions.
The Apple store will not recommend anything that Apple is not officially selling.
SSDs work, and they work well.
Just ask Samsara, or some of the other hot rodders on these forums.
And because I don't understand scratch disk, SDD disks, raptor drives etc, this all is not getting me anywhere. thus, why i tried the Apple store.
    Ask. Study. Use Wikipedia.
Educating oneself is paramount to improving decisions, questions, work and life........
SSD - The future, now. Fast, expensive (but coming down in price), no moving parts (reliable)Solid State Drive
*Raptor Drives* - A family of 10,000 RPM SATA drives from Western Digital. These drives are high performance. They make systems run faster.
*Scratch Disks* - These are additional hard drives (in addition to the system drive) that allow for greater utilization of virtual memory- the writing of files, temporarily, to hard drive, to free up physical memory and allow faster calculations of processes.
Anyone who does work with video or photography software, must have a working knowledge of the benefits of a scratch drive.
Photoshop runs +way faster+ with a fast scratch disk.
When seeking advice on any forum, the more specific the question, the easier it will be for contributors to provide advice that is pleasing to your senses.
I've given you my take on what I feel may be your questions intent.
Hopefully, it wasn't a waste of time.....

  • CS4 Question: Quad Core Intel vs. Intel Core i7

    Hi All,
Between the two processors below, which would you recommend for a system with Vista 64bit and CS4:
    Quad Core Intel® Xeon® Processor E5420 (2.50GHz,2X6M L2,1333)
    or
    Intel® Corei7-920 Processor(8MB L2 Cache, 2.66GHz)
I have read some potential instabilities with the i7 processor, CS4, Vista 64 bit. But maybe this is old info and this processor is fine.
Any recommendations would be great! Thanks-

Yep. Old on this case means possessing Front Side Bus. Strange, but people who should know better think it still exists with i7.
Don't even consider anything but the i7, kdog. I've been testing software concerning overclocking on all the versions, and so long as you stay at defaults, stability will not be any concern (barring defects of course!).
So far as overclocking, Intel provide a utility to overclock and find any tendencies to become unstable when tuning and will set the system back to defaults. Also, a tip: If you want to overclock and have a stable system, get a tool like Prime 95 or a utility that runs intensive calculations and run it for 8 hours after you think the computer is optimum. It will find instabilities.

  • IMac Quad-Core i7 Temperature Spec Question

Is there a published set of mean temperature and energy consumption tables for the quad-core iMac i7? I went through the process of transferring and adding roughly 30 GB of iTunes content and the iStat temperature and fan rpm readings spiked. What really caught my attention was when the side and top housing of the unit became hot enough that it was unacceptable to touch. I am now a bit concerned about putting my new machine in a computer armoire and want to make sure that my new machine is running within spec.
Please note that this is my fourth Mac in six years and I have never encountered this type of issue before even with a laptop sitting in my lap for an extend period of time.

Actually the GPU is located near the center, but the GPU heatsink is sitting top/right and the airstream from the fan under the optical disk drive is blowing out there.
    http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iMac-Intel-27-Inch/1236/2
(see the metallic box at the top right and the fan at the right bottom)
Top left is somewhat similar, there the airstream from the CPU heatsink and power supply leave the iMac's body.
However, iStat should report the CPU/GPU/etc. values. If those are okay, the hot is merely an indication for the effectiveness of the heat management, i.e. that the heat is led away from the sensitive parts to the outside via the body. From an engeneering standpoint, Apple has excellent heat management, always with noise-reductino being part of the design.
I've had the same with a 24" iMac too btw ... top left (CPU airstream) corner getting quite hot when it does number crunching. And hot to the touch 60°C are still well within the working limits of a CPU (and a GPU can still operate nicely at 90°C).
Personally I appreciate that Apple is trading heat for noise (as long as it's not a laptop burning into my upper legs).

  • Duo Core Vs Quad Core upgrade question

Looking for some solid answers on what improvements if any that a Quad Core (Q9650 3ghz) CPU would have ove a Duo Core (Q6850  3ghz) in Ppro CS4.Especially when it comes to AVCHD editing. Any thoughts as to this upgrade would be worth it?

Harm is correct, look at the Premiere Pro CS4 Benchmark (PPBM4) results and see the result for those two processors.  While you do get a small incremental inprovement it probably is not with the cost.

  • Crazy to install CS2 on Quad Core 64 bit Windows 7 notebook?

I've been a video producer/director/editor since 1970 and have witnessed most all the progress and insanity of the "corporate wars" to dominate video production and later, video editing.  I no longer see any reason to differentiate between still photography, video production, editing, web authoring, print production, graphics, CGI, CAD etc...ad nauseum. My dream has long been to have one very powerful laptop that could do most everything that a creative person desired on location anywhere in the world.
My new notebook is an ASUS Quad Core G71GX with 6 GB RAM - an Nvidia Geoforce GTX 260M - and 2 - 500 GB, 7200 rpm hard drives - Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit OS. These days I shoot most video using a Canon SX1 IS at 1080 30p and the files are playing back beautifully on the 1920x1400 display at full frame rate. So for me that covers the basics. I will be upgrading from Windows 7 Home Premium to Ultimate shortly. Does anyone have issues/questions about the platform?
As to the software . . . I have been using Adobe stuff for 20 years or so.but did not get into their video editing products until Premiere 6.5. Than I jumped in with both feet and became a beta tester for the CS2 video collection. I still have my complimentary Premiere Pro 2.0 and it still works on my older XP Pro notebooks.
But now we are here in 2010 and all the major PC platforms are running 64 bit Operating Systems and I just figure that I should hold out for a true 64 bit Master Collection [which many people call CS5]. In the meantime I decided to install my CS2 Creative Suite and Premiere Pro 2.0 just so I could have the benefit of these programs while I am waiting for the 64 bit to release.
I purchased my CS2 back in 2005 as a download and last night made the attempt to install it onto the ASUS. As expected the serial number did not work so I called Adobe Installation support and got started after they prompted me for the "challenge" code. When I entered it the installation began nicely UNTIL the first folder [CS_2.0_UE_Ret_D1] finished loading and UP POPPED a window saying "Please insert CD #2" with only an OK button. Well, I didn't have any CDs because the suite was delivered as a download way back when and there seems to be no way to get to Disk 2 folder.
I finally decided to Quit the install when up pops a window that says [paraphrasing]. Your Photoshop program on Disc 1 has been verified and so try again to install. I said OK and up pops a window with all the various programs and the option to select Install. I selected each one [except GoLive because I now have Dreamweaver CS4] and proceeded. I sort of kluged my way through the transition from D1 to D2 to D3 to D4 folders and by all indications had a successfully installed, registered and activated CS2 suite on the ASUS notebook. Restarted the machine.
Opened Photoshop and up comes an error message "Your Adobe Photoshop user name, organization or serial number is missing or invalid. The application cannot continue and must now exit" "OK", which I pressed and Photoshop closed. Checked the other CS2 programs and none of them would open.
I would appreciate any pointers on how to get CS2 Creative Suite to install properly since Adobe Tech Support says such installation help is out of date and recommended this forum.
BTW: I run Videography Lab and am the "seminal author of videography". OCT 1972 American Cinematographer. I have a different take on the meaning of videography than most folks. After 38 years of research and contemplation I believe "Videography means 'I know to write' or conversely 'writing my knowing'" The platform that I've been talking about is the technology tool that enables such communication in "the Age of Videography" [Miller Freeman Publishing - 1996].
Call me crazy and than help me get this sorted out
Bob Kiger - [url removed by host]
PS: Does anyone beside me expect a sudden and dramatic shootout between Final Cut Studio & Adobe Creative Suite soon?

    Hi Michael--
Upon continued research we found your statement "CS 2 isn't compatible with Windows 7 32-bit no less 64-bit." not quite true. We grant you that, in it's raw state, Windows 7 will not install, activate, register etc. CS2 programs. That's been the Adobe position for quite a while.
Now that we have Windows 7 in hand and can play we found that if you have Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate edition you can acquire for $89.95 and download/install in an hour or so "Windows Virtual PC" and "Windows XP Mode".[Note: This feature is not available on Home editions].
We purchased the platform and once it is installed we had a "Windows XP platform" on our Windows 7 machine. From that point forward the installation of CS2 and many other of our old favorite programs was a snap. We've opened and worked with Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign etc. with no problems.
And, by the way, Premiere Pro 2.0 intalled easily on Windows 7. We're testing it now with some sub-1080p projects.
As to the long nagging problem of Adobe Installer not recognizing the downloaded CS2 CAB files during installation, we worked around by just saying OK when the installer asked for the next disc and immediately clicked on the desired disc in a seperate exlorer window which contained all the download files.
So that's the workaround for us. Now we wait to see who wins the race to enchant users with 64 bit editing and imaging suites.
    Thanks for all your help.

  • UPGRADING AND MIXING MEMORY ON MY MAC PRO QUAD CORE DUAL 2.8 (Xeon)?

    Hello,
I have a Mac Pro Quad Core Dual 2.8GHz (Xeons) with 4GB of memory (2 x 1GB Apple modules + 2 x 1GB other brand - Shown as "Manufacturer 0x855D") and now I want to fill the other 4 memory slots by adding an additional 16GB (4 x 4GB modules) for a total of 20GB of RAM.
    My 2 questions are:
1.- In which order/pattern should I install these new 4 X 4GB modules along with my original Apple 2 x 1GB modules and the "Manufacturer 0x855D" 2 x 1GB modules the best way (for better performance)? - I have heard stories that if I do it improperly, I could slow down my Mac Pro...
This is how I have them configured right now:
    Raiser A / DIMM 1 = 1GB (Manufaturer "0x830B") - I assume this is the Apple memory, right?
    Raiser A / DIMM 2 = 1GB (Manufaturer "0x830B")
    Raiser A / DIMM 3 = Empty
    Raiser A / DIMM 4 = Empty
    Raiser B / DIMM 1 = 1GB (Manufacturer "0x855D") - How can I find which manufacturer is this?
    Raiser B / DIMM 2 = 1GB (Manufacturer "0x855D")
    Raiser B / DIMM 3 = Empty
    Raiser B / DIMM 4 = Empty
2.- What brand would be most compatible to work with my Apple 2GB (2 x 1GB) factory memory? Kingston? Crucial? Mushkin? iRam? Corsair? OWC? (Does OWC sell their own brand? or which one do they carry?-its not specified on their web)
Thank you so much in advance for all your help!

Ram should be installed minimally in matched pairs and optimally in matched quads. This means the memory modules are the same size and specifications. They should also be equipped with the Apple-certified style of heat sink.
Brand really doesn't mean much as long as they work.

  • Memory arrangements in iMac i5 quad core (mid 2010)

I used to run 8 GB of ram in 4 modules. The upper two slots were occupied with the 2 samsung 2GB modules that came with the computer. The lower two slots I filled with 2 more 2 GB ram modules from corsair. These 8 Gb of RAM worked fine until one of these corsair modules failed: after several crashes I identified the culprit module by elimination using memtest.
A good time to upgrade: I left the upper slots as is and filled the two lower slots 4 GB modules, also from corsair so that I now have 12 GB. When booting up the machine, the system profiler indicated that the machine only recognised 6 GB, one of each size module. When removing the two 4 GB modules, the imac recognised the remaining two 2 GB module. Turns out that one of the 4 GB modules is doa. It was identified again by elimination: Using only one of the 4Gb modules in the mac in the same upper left slot, the imac booted up with the good one, but not with the faulty one.
Question: why did the imac not recognise one working memory module in the upper slot when one in the lower slot was faulty, but recognised it again, once the faulty one was removed.
Apple says the i5 quad-core imac does not start up if only one of the lower slots is occupied - which is not true. Apple also says that the imac does not work properly when the memory access door is not re-installed, which is also not true.
Does it matter whether I install two 2 GB modules in the upper slots and two 4 GB modules in the lower, or would it be better the other way round. What if I installed the 4 GB modules above each other the the same with the 2 Gb modules?
    Any experience would be appreciated.

Apple says the i5 quad-core imac does not start up if only one of the lower slots is occupied - which is not true.
If you look at the Apple instructions online (I believe the exact article you mentioned), I understood that Apple and I had a different idea of what top and bottom were supposed to be. Both you and I feel that the original RAM are in the top slots, but the instructions are such that it sounds as though they are in the bottom.
In any case, I've read of another case where someone moved the original RAM to the bottom and installed the added RAM in the top slots - supposedly it will result in slightly faster performance because those are the RAM that will be addressed first. However, the RAM needs to be in pairs horizontally: 2 x 4 GB in the top (or bottom) slots and 2 x 2 GB horizontally in the other banks. I do not have any idea as to why a top slot would not work if the bottom was not occupied.
