9800 pro 128mb vs 9800 xt 256mb

With a dual 1ghz G4 MDD, is there a bottle neck when using the 9800 XT with 256mb ram vs the 9800 Pro with 128mb's? Is the XT too much card for the 1GHZ DP? Haven't had a chance to give them a test run, as I've been only using the XT, but as it does get very hot, I want to know the technical aspects and wether or not the 9800 pro 128mb would loose performance yet maybe run a little cooler?

Hi-
Is the XT too much card for the 1GHZ DP?
No.
The 4x AGP slot still isn't saturated.
The cards are basically the same chip.
The XT has a bit different board architecture, is clocked faster, and has a bigger OEM fan.
http://www.barefeats.com/motion02.html
The XT is a bit faster than the Pro due to the differences, but I doubt the Pro runs any cooler.
The chipset is the culprit.
As with the Pro, an aftermarket cooler for the XT can help.
But, the MDD slot placement doesn't help in that department, does it?
Maybe get 2 1GB low profile DIMMs and then cut a slot in the backplate of the tower to use one of these:

  • Can I replace an ATI RADEON 9800 PRO-(256MB)-MAC EDITION with Mac ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb Video Card For G4/G5

    Hi,
I am trying to help a friend whose graphics card has bust.
The old one was an ATI RADEON 9800 PRO-(256MB)-MAC EDITION.
I've been looking on ebay and it seems a lot cheaper to get a Mac ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb Video Card For G4/G5.
Can I just swap them over?  The connectors are not identical according to the photographs.
    Thanks.

I'd like to thank everyone for all the really useful information in this thread. It helped me solve a similar problem, which I'll describe here briefly in case it helps someone else.
I have a 2004/5 dual 2 Ghz PowerPC G5 and an Apple Cinema HD display linked, as I later found out, with the now defunct ADC connector. The display suddenly started to look like that scene in The Matrix, when code falls like rain down the screen, and I worked out I needed to replace my Radeon 9800 pro video card (I discovered the board was blue when I removed a thick layer of dust).
I took japamac's excellent advice and bought a Geforce 6800 Ultra from the linked eBay seller in Hong Kong, who delivered it extremely quickly, along with the cables to plug it into the DVD drive power source and a CD with installation instructions. It was only then that I realised the card had two DVI connectors and my display needed ADC (I hadn't understood the difference).
eBay came to the rescue again with a seller who had a secondhand DVI to ADC adapter, which Apple produced  when it phased out ADC about six years ago but no longer sells. It has its own power supply and looks like a large version of the Mac laptop power cables - and has added signifcantly to the pile of spaghetti under my desk.
Installing the Geforce 6800 Ultra is fiddly, and a bit scary if you're not used to delving into the insides of a Mac, but the instructions were clear and illustrated with useful photos. The video cable has four connectors. Two fit into the end of the card, the other two (linked in a Y shape) form a bridge between the DVD/superdrive and its power cable. You have to remove the DVD drive, unplug it, and then plug one of the two Y video card connectors into the DVD power cable and the other into the DVD drive itself. Then you replace the DVD drive, plug the two remaining cable connectors to the video card and ease it into the old card's AGP slot.
Finally, with the G5 reassembled, plug the adapter's DVI connection into the back of the card, plug the Cinema Display ADC cable into the adapter block, plug the adapter's USB cable into the G5 (this enables the the USB ports on the back of the display to work), and power up.
At the time of writing, the display has been up and running for a couple of hours and all seems fine.
Thanks again everyone for all your help and advice. If it wasn't for communities like this, it would be virtually impossible to solve problems with old but still serviceable Macs.

  • Radeon 9800 Pro 128Mb troubles :\

    Hey,
I'm not used to post things on a forum but now I'm getting quite desperate. I've been searching and surfing the net for possible solutions but none worked until now.
Sometimes my v-card's drivers hang, or that's what I think. The image freezes, but the mouse can keep on moving (nothing will react anymore and even when I'm typing this, it happened already 1 times). After that "freeze" of about 2-3 seconds, the screen will "click" like you hear when you change resolution in the display properties. After that, the screen comes back and most of the time, everything is ok, except from the fact that sometimes a window like this (mozilla) is resized to 800*600 or 640*480 size .. (not sure)
But sometimes, the screen goes black after clicking and will never come back, only a reset can help this situation.
And sometimes (rare) the screen begins to show artifacts on the screen (not in games, just windows) and this gets worse and worse until you can't see  and have to reset.
When anything of this happens during a game, a recover doesn't seem to be possible at all.
     -> this suggests it's a driver problem...
Now I've read about fastwrites (not available in current bios - but i heard it's available in the new bios which i didn't upgrade yet because i'm a bit afraid of the procedure as I don't have a FAT system nor a win98/ME boot disk and I'm using winXP pro) which I disabled in the catalyst drivers
I've tried to lower the AGP acceleration
    I've tried Omega drivers
I've turned on and off the VPU recover
I've checked my PSU - even disconnected everything but v-card, hdd and nic and my PSU (Antec case) can give 16A/28A/35A in 12v/5v/3.33v rails...
A clean install of windows won't help
    Direct X version doesn't matter
And all starts after the first catalyst driver installation after the fresh windows install.
    Please help,
If you think there's some info missing, don't hesitate to ask, I'm an experience PC user so you can ask me pretty much everything about anything (I think) and I'll followup this post frequently. Anything that can help me find the cause will be appreciated. Until now I didn't want to return the card under warranty because I know I'll have to miss it quite some time then. :(
    PC spec:
    MSI 6547 (Sis645) Mobo
    P4 1.6A (OC'ed or not, doesn't change anything)
    Hercules Radeon 9800 Pro 128Mb
    Windows XP Pro - SP1

i read that the bios update adds the "enable fast write" function, but at what value is it whitout the update ?
if it's enabled by default, then it could be the problem
but i'll look into the site you gave and try to flash the bios tomorrow
i'll post the results and try the card in another pc if it didn't work :\

  • ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb or 256mb for PowerMac G4 MDD

I hane just a bought a PowerMac G4 MDD dual core 1.25 GHZ. I t has the old ATI Radeon 9000 pro. I am definately going to buy a 9800 Pro. But, I would like to know wether or not to spend the extra $70 on the 256mb card, rather than pay only $90 for the 128MB edition. I am not going to be doing anything CRAZY like photoshoping, or final cut pro or anything like that, bu I am going to be playing the casual 2002-2004 game here and there (Half-Life 2). And, I would also be running emulators. So, I have compared the two cards and have not noticed anything different as far as specs go. Except for 128MB more ram. I am on a budget, but would like the extra performance.
    Thanks for repsonding,
    Tanner (armadaskier4123)

There is virtually NO performance difference between the 256 MB version and the 128 MB version of the 9800 Pro.
Even with a digital monitor of 23" at full, native resolution of 1920x1200, the 256 MB version shows NO benefit.
In actual tests, the 256 MB version shows slightly slower, but mostly equal.
IMHO, it is NOT worth an extra $70.
See my Graphics Benchmarks pages and decide for yourself:
    http://www.jcsenterprises.com/Japamacs_Page/All_Things_PPC.html
If a G4 is a Digital Audio, Quicksilver or MDD, the 7800 GS is worth the money for use in Tiger.
For Leopard, a Geforce 6800 GT may be better due to better driver support and OpenGL performance.
The 6800 GT, sadly, cannot be used in a MDD.
Still, the 7800 GS does perform very well in Leopard, and is the best choice for a MDD.
If a G4 is a Sawtooth or Gigabit Ethernet machine, the 7800 GS (or the 6800 GT) cannot be used.

  • Quicksilver 733 and Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB

My dad just purchased a new iMac for himself and he's given his older Quicksilver 733 to my nephews. I'm trying to setup this Mac so the kids can use it to play games like Battlefield 1942, Command & Conquer, Star Wars Galatic Battleground, etc.
The Quicksilver has 1.12 GBs of RAM and a new 350 GB Seagate SATA hard drive with controller. I just installed a flashed Radeon 9800 Pro w/ 128MB of VRAM, but for some reason the computer still seems sluggish.
I'm currently running Mac OS X 10.3.9. I also noticed that in the ATI Utility shows the Radeon 9800 Pro's profile, but it doesn't indicate any refresh rates, which is odd. What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks,
    Kelly

I also noticed that in the ATI Utility shows the Radeon 9800 Pro's profile, but it doesn't indicate any refresh rates, which is odd.
You will only have refresh rate options with VGA monitors.
DVI monitors all default to approx. 60Hz.

  • Radeon 9800 Pro (128MB) on G4 with lots of artifacts

    Hi there,
I recently bought a radeon 9800 pro (mac version) over ebay. I put it into a d1ghz (quicksilver with 1.5GB of Ram. Everything seems to work fine, however, the screen flickers ever so slightly after the ripple effect in the dashboard. Yet this is not really what bugs me: Any game (and probably other applications as well) which uses Core Image produces huge artifacts. There are just random screen-filling bits sticking out the ground...
How do I get rid of this? I already checked all the connections, ran software update, downloaded the most recent drivers and tried downclocking the graphics card.... (I also think that I cleared NV- and PRAM, but I am not sure... )
    What am I forgetting?
    Thanks already, dl33

Hi. I had the same problem, but it was a 500 mhz Sawtooth. I was told it was either a power issue or a heat issue. So I upgraded the power supply from 237 watts to 400 watts. It seemed to help, but it started doing the same thing. After wasting a lot of time and money with power supplies and soldering and adding fans, etc, I looked at the fan on the card. Like you, I bought mine used. The guy said it worked flawlessly. When I first got it and experienced the problems, I checked the fan. It wasn't the stock fan, was a unit from Arctic Cooling. The fan was spinning, but it said that air should be blown out the exhaust, and I felt none. Upon closer inspection it turned out that the fan was defective. It was constantly speeding up/slowing down, and it was supposed to be a single speed fan...not good. But by the time I figured that out, the card had been fried. I got a new unit from Arctic Cooling, but the card no longer works.
Might want to check the fan and make sure it's spinning. Your power supply should be sufficient since I believe the QS's had 344 watt PSU's.
One thing I forgot to mention was that underclocking it usually helped. I had to underclock it a good amount, though. I believe it was around 20%.
    Hope this helps.
    Matt

  • 128MB VRAM instead of 256MB on ATI Radeon x1900

I just bought and installed a graphic card ati radeon x1900 mac edition pci-express, 256 MB.
Easily installed and running. However, it registers only 128MB of VRAM.
On ati/amd homepage they this is a Mac issue. Anyone know of this problem or how to solve it?
Question is also if it is a soft- or hardware problem.
    Regards and thanx in advance.

    You're Welcome!
If you download ATIcellerator II, an overclocking utility, using the "Info tab" will tell you how much VRAM the software sees.
BTW, the software is benign, unless used for its purpose- overclocking your card. It's a good utility, but, if one plays with overclocking carelessly, well, you'll be shopping for a new card....

To me it does seem to be significantly quieter that other notepads I've used. Is this the way the item should be working or could it be a possible issue?
Thanks for any help or advise you can give.

    Hi again
Do you have this problem using all players or just using DVD player? Is this situation since you bought notebook or it occur later? Everything is possible but I dont think that something is faulty.

  • Ati 9700 pro 128mb problems

hi everyone, i have installed this card in my 733mhz powermac,768mb memory running 10.4. i get the open firmware, then blue screen and thats it. i installed drivers from ati, pressed cuda button, ran permissions, still no joy, i do not have the installation disk for it, help!!!

    Hi again, All,
I've gathered some additional information regarding the QuickSilver power supply, as opposed to the QuickSilver 2002 power supply. I have one of each system currently in hand—I can verify that an original QuickSilver has a power supply rated at 344 Watts, while a QuickSilver 2002 has a power supply rated at 355 Watts.
Details and snapshots of the labels as follows:
    original QuickSilver power supply
    Manufacturer: AcBel
    Wattage: 344 W maximum
    Manufacturer part number: API1PC12
Apple part number: 661-2514 (found via Google search; not printed on the label itself)
    QuickSilver 2002 power supply
    Manufacturer: Delta Electronics
    Wattage: 355 W maximum
Manufacturer part number: DPS 340AB A Rev: 02
Apple part number: 614-0158 (apparently, not a standard 661- part number)
Looking at the two power supplies as they're installed, they appear to be identical in form factor and I see no reason why a 355 Watt model could not be installed into an original QuickSilver (or even in the Digital Audio and/or Gigabit Ethernet models, with the proper mounting bracket). As others have noted the MDD power supply appears to be rated at 360 Watts, this might mean there is a single, drop-in solution for those wanting to take a stab at running the OEM Radeon 9700 in either QuickSilver model, and without having to modify your case in any way in order to cram a MDD power supply in there!
DISCLAIMER: Apple has been known to place differing (but compatible) parts into systems based on availability at the time of manufacture. While I have one of each model in hand and so have provided a photo of each, do NOT purchase a whole system unit without actually checking the power supply label to make sure it does, in fact, have the proper power supply you seek! And even so, we're still testing here and so any information I can provide should be considered anecdotal at best, and not "definitive".
I'll be in touch as soon as the OEM Radeon 9700 reaches me within the next week or so, and will provide further information at that time. Here's hoping!
    Power Mac G4 (QuickSilver 2002), 20" Cinema Display   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   Dual 1.0 GHz G4/1.5 GB RAM/2x160 GB HD/SuperDrive/GeForce4 MX

  • ATI 9800 - 128mb vs 256mb - speed?

I've come full cycle after discovering the ATI 9600 does not physically fit in my G4 AGP sawtooth because I have now learned that I have an AGP 2x slot. The 9600 is only for 4x and 8x.
So now my choices are between the 128mb card or the 256mb card.
There is of course a difference in price and I'm wondering if there is a siginificant difference in speed and is it worth the money? I'm putting the card in to satisfy Motion's requirements.
I'm running dual 19" Apple Studio Monitors. Does the card split the memory for each monitor?
    Ken

    ken,
i put the new ati 9800 256 meg card in my ancient 2002 quicksilver. it works, i can get some good things done in motion but it's not splitting the wind by any stretch of the imagination. learn the workarounds like previewing in 1/3 resolution and it's not bad. it can get snail slow depending upon your project.
you will find that if you boot up using only one monitor, the card will devote all the vram to motion and it'll be a little snappier, otherwise it'll split the vram between two monitors. i use two monitors as well but have gotten used to using motion on one monitor.
this card will increase the noise level of your machine a lot. also, i had a card where the fan was failing and was sounding like a bleating cow upon startup. contacted ati, sent the thing back and it was promptly replaced. ati customer service was great.
    good luck.

  • NEO2-FIS2R ATI 9800 AIW Pro TV Tuner causes freezes/blue screens. Help!

I recently upgraded my system from P4 2.4Ghz to P4 3.4Ghz Northwood and went from All in Wonder Radeon to 9800 AIW Pro. Only other change worth mentioning is I created a 0+1 RAID using 4 hard drives which were previously configured differently. I watch a lot of TV while I work on the computer. I do a lot of disk writes and data management which ultimately creates a lot of transfering of data between disks. Never was a problem in the old config. BTW, I also use an external HD conntected through USB for data transfers as well.
Immediately, my system went from stable to unstable. I first noticed that the destop redraw on bootup was slower. Then I noticed that the TV had a delayed response on changing channels and changing volume. Switching to another window causes a slow redraw and sometimes causes a jerk in the TV display like a hickup. Other symptoms include blue screens but no driver is referenced. The blue screen otherwise is a normal STOP screen except for the bottom quarter of the monitor which looks like video garble. Sometimes it just reboots. Sometimes, it freezes. I noticed that doing disk transfers while watching TV usually speeds up the behavior. Comparatively, my use of the TV in the old config was transparent regarless of how much I taxed the system.
Anyway, in view of the unexpected behavior, I decided to backup and reinstall the OS from scratch using a vanilla install method. Everything was detected properly, OS installed fine. Installed ATI's latest Catalyst drivers. I turn on the TV and within about 15 minutes of use, the erratic behavior begins. I figured it was a bad card so I exchanged it out. Same thing with the new card. ATI is shrugging their shoulders and pointing at MSI.
I ran hardware tests, updated the MB BIOS to latest available. Tested all four hard drives/RAM. I can't find any hardware issues. I'm very conservative with my BIOS settings so aside from the default values, I have only changed the settings required to allow for a 0+1 RAID config on the Promise controller.
I put my old ATI Radeon back in and ran the TV for hours and had no problems at all. I also swapped my old 2.4 back in with the 9800 AIW Pro and the problem is recreated so that is what has me ruling out the processor.
Here's what the box looks like inside.
    Antec 480 True Blue
    MSI NEO2-FIS2R (w/latest BIOS)
    1GB Corsair VS512MB400 x 2
    4 Maxtor 160GB hard drives, 8MB Cache, 2ea SATA, 2ea PATA
    Intel 3.4Ghz Northwood CPU, 512KB, 800FSB w/Zalman 7700CU HS/F
ATI 9800 AIW Pro 128MB DDR
    Front/Rear 120mm Case Fans
Optical drive, floppy drive, modem card, sound card.
NOTE: All USB ports are being used by devices with their own power supply except for a web camera.  All fans are using power from PSU. No fans use MB power.
I also checked to insure that the AGP card was seated correctly and verified that it was. So, I'm pretty bummed out that I just dropped circa $500 on improving my system but I can't even get it work as well as it used to.
I think I have found the problem but short of getting rid of the 9800 AIW Pro, I am hoping that someone else has had this problem and can help me out. Your ideas would be greatly appreciated!!!

    Good News!!
While the DDR voltage was set to 2.7, I recreated the conditions in which the failures tended to occur. Within minutes, it was obvious that something had changed as I had never gone that far without getting kicked out, freezing up, or blue screening. Since this is looking more and more like a power issue, I decided to leave all of my external USB connections disconnected except for the external hard drive because I normally transfer data back and forth frequently from it.
When I saw that the system was holding up well, I connected the rest of the USB connections. Everything ran OK for a few minutes but then the sound from the TV dropped out while the picture continued to function. Although, this marked another failure, it was a marked improvement over what had been happening previously.
NovJoe suggested tweaking the voltage to 2.7 ~ 2.8 so I upped the voltage to 2.8 and setup the same environment and the machine has run that way for about 3 hours. That one increment seems to have made a difference.
    Questions which come to mind.
    1. If this is a power issue, is it the motherboard's inability to supply the correct voltage to the motherboard components or is it a PSU issue which isn't providing the motherboard enough juice to do its job or a combination of both?
    2. If this issue can be corrected through tweaking voltages, how do you know how far to go before damaging system components?
One of the original symptoms with the TV is still apparent. Upon changing channels, there is a second delay before the sound and picture synchronize. Changing foreground windows also causes a "hickup" in the TV's sound/video. I'm more concerned with what this behavior may mean from a system performance standpoint rather than the annoyance since this is a 9800 AIW Pro and it should be snappy instead of sluggish.
Up the AGP voltage? On that subject, the people here seem to have a lot of background with tweaking the BIOS. I'd appreciate any other ideas in tweaking this system as well.
Ultimately, I have to answer the question of whether I need to get a bigger PSU or can I safely correct my system performance by using BIOS tweaks?
Thanks again for all your help.

  • Can I add a ATI 9800 PRO AGP card?

    Hello,
I am seriously looking at this cool MEGA PC as HT add-on. I am thinking of adding a ATI 9800 PRO card. Can I do it? :O

I don't know if it will fit, but let me say this about those Flex-ATX 200W PSU's.  Don't count the smaller PSU's out.  And don't think that a higher number is better.  Because when it comes down to it,  it's about quality not quantity.
I have a Shuttle SB51G with the ACHME 200W PSU.  Just 200 little watts, but yet it runs 100% stable with the following:
