9800GT vs HD 4770, drivers vs performance

I wasn't sure where to post this, so I hope here is okay.
My old 8600GT died yesterday and I've been looking into replacements. I'm currently trying to decide between a GeForce 9800GT and a Radeon HD 4770; they cost the same and are the best I can afford. From what I've seen on benchmarks, though, the Radeon outperforms the GeForce by about 10%, but NVIDIA has better drives for Linux. I use Windows for gaming and Arch for everything else. My doubt is whether or not the performance improvement is worth the worse drivers. FWIW, I'm using Awesome WM (so no fancy desktop effects). Any advice would be useful. Thanks!

Oh man, I bought a laptop not too long ago with an ati chipset thinking "it couldn't be that bad, right?".
Well, if you value everything working smoothly and random stuff not happening, then please go the nvidia.  I've got a 9800gtx and it's disgusting how much power there is, even if the ati card is better.  Believe the hype, their drivers are poor.  Even if the nvidia is more expensive, I'd still buy it.

  • LabVIEW drivers to perform vault actions on Solidworks EPDM files

I would like to find out if anyone has any code written to work with the Solidworks PDMWorks Enterprise Type Library?  The very basic thing I would like to do is find out if a file in the vault is checked out or not, but it would be nice to know if other options are available also (e.g. Checkout, View Status, Get Latest, etc.).  If there is any code already written, it would be greatly appreciated so I don't have to reinvent the wheel.
    Thanks, Jeff

I am not using the Softmotion Module, nor do I need it.  I just need to find out if a file is 'Checked Out' in the EPDM Vault.  If the file is checked out, I only want to prompt the user to go check it out first before continuing.  If Softmotion has this capability, then perhaps I could recreate just that VI, figuring out all of the activeX tags to use is a chore.  If there is nothing already out there, I'll get it figured out.

  • Thin JDBC Drivers Insert Strings Incorrectly

Can anyone confirm or deny this.
I've downloaded the latest Oracle 8i JDBC drivers. If I create a table:
    CREATE TABLE Moo (stringCol VARCHAR(10) NOT NULL);
and I try to insert an empty String into Moo.stringCol, the JDBC drivers try to insert Null instead! Yet if I try and insert a String of one character in length, it inserts it correctly.
Clearly it would seem the JDBC drivers are at fault.
    Anyone come across this?

No, the drivers are performing correctly. In Oracle, an empty string in a varchar or varchar2 column is considered NULL. Regardless of what protocol or language you use to access the database, this will hold true.

  • XP Bootcamp nVidia drivers

Ok, this is an outstanding question/problem I have posted on another forum. Video drivers. ATI and nVidia are constantly updating drivers for performance increases and bug fixes but I have yet to get some kind of answer on how/if/where I am able to download these drivers.
Do they work? Which ones? Are any drivers ok that I would download on a normal windows based machine work?
I have a MBP (specs in sig) that I play games on. I'd like to enjoy the bug fixes and performance increases that the rest of the world uses =( Can I? Does anybody know the answer to these questions?
Thanks! Hope I don't sound too desparate

OK - so maybe I spoke too soon. I downloaded those drivers and installed them, but thank God I did a system restore. For some reason it wouldn't go beyond 4-bit. I went into advanced and managed a 800x600 in 8-bit, but there was no nVidia control panel, no resolution/bit options. I was thoroughly confused.
    Sorry to hear.
Seems like the Nvidia drivers are not so generally useable they claim them to be.
But glad to hear that you caould easily revert back.
Another option to try would be the Drivers/Modders from DriverHeaven http://www.driverheavendownloads.net/index.htm
I haven't tried these myself, so I can not report on how good they are.

  • [SOLVED] Compiz Performance with ATI x700

    So this is my story:
I have an Acer Aspire Laptop with a ATI x700 Mobility graphics card. A couple of days ago I installed Arch for the first time. I installed the "xf86-video-ati" package and compiz-fusion and it worked great. Then I managed to break my system to unusability and decided to reinstall. In the meantime there was an update for xf86-video-ati (from 6.8.0-4 to 6.9.0-5) and now I have some quite annoying performance issues with compiz: maximizing/unmaximizing as well as unminimizing a window (so I assume everytime it has to load a new window into the memory) takes like 2 seconds (while working perfectly smoothly before).
I tryed the options suggested at http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI … nce_tuning but without success. Since I use exactly the same xorg configuration as before I can only speculate that it has to do something with the package update (maybe some option that was enabled by default before now has to be manually set?). I also tried the catalyst drivers but performance was pretty much the same.
Anyways, here are the relevant parts (so I think) of my xorg.conf file
    Section "Module"
    Load "glx"
    Load "dri"
    Load "drm"
    EndSection
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "** ATI (generic) [ati]"
    Driver "ati"
    Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps" "true"
    Option "MonitorLayout" "LVDS,AUTO"
    EndSection
    Section "DRI"
    Group "video"
    Mode 0666
    EndSection
Any ideas what I could do to bring back compiz at the speed that my graphics card already proved to be capable of are very welcome

I think I just experienced the same problem with my x800gto.  It was very slow to toggle between vertical/horizontal/full maximizations.  I tried changing the default acceleration method from XAA to EXA.  This seems to have solved the problem, and now my wobbly windows change size with butter smoothness.  The changes I made were to add
    Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
under the device setting.  There reason you need no such option for XAA is because, to my undestanding, XAA is the default.  Making this change means you should also comment out
Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps" "true" #needed for aiglx
    since it is now irrelevant.
Since you also use an ATI card, I will suggest configuration options that work well for me:
    Option "AGPMode" "4"
    Option "GARTSize" "64"
    Option "EnablePageFlip" "True"
    Option "ColorTiling" "True"
Good luck.  Hope this does the trick for you.

  • Driver related slow performance with MSI 9600GT OC

I've come across a really weird problem with my 9600GT. For some reason, whenever I use the latest NVIDIA drivers my performance drops to the level that everything moves around 3fps or so! The card works perfectly with the drivers on the MSI disk and the other one on the MSI website but if I try to use drivers directly from NVIDIA it screws up.
I've made sure I've downloaded the right drivers and installed them correctly... I'm just well out of ideas. Am I missing something? ???

Alex..browse to Nvidia's website..search their faq files, installing/uninstalling drivers.  See if you overlooked something. You should NOT be stuck using MSI boxed drivers..it's a Nvidia card.  G/luck.

  • Performance impacts of activating MDTB for MRP lists

Does anyone have any input on the performance impacts of activating MDTB?  Clearly it will impact performance, but by how much?  What are the main drivers of performance number of MRP elements / MDTB records?
What methods can be used to mitigate?  Increasing the DB buffering?
    Thanks

    Hi,
I doubt if there could be a generic answer for your query. It would depend on a lot of parameters eg: the number of materials being planned, the frequency of planning, system resources available etc.
All i could say is, load the entire set of materials into the system & then work with your basis personnel to fine tune the system.

The display driver is ver 8.900.7.1000 dated 28/09/2011.
Before I was able to plug in the HDMI cable to my TV & extend my display.
Currently, I am unable to extend my display. My TV detects the source, but when I try to output the display, it is not able to output it to the TV. It outputs it only to the VGA port.
I have tried changing the HDMI cAbles as well as different monitors. The story is still the same.
I have disabled the drivers & inmstalled them again still no solution. I deleted the drivers & visited teh AMD site to auto detect & recommend the driver. This too gave no results.

I grasp that you are unable to get your TV recognized when connected by HDMI but it was working previously.  You have updated the graphic drivers from the AMD site but no change.
Here is a link to the recommended software and drivers HP Pavilion g6-1a44ca Notebook PC Drivers.  Please note that the recommended drivers are not the same versions as the one you have currently installed.
I suggest you delete( not uninstall) the current driver and install the recommended driver.  If you were to just uninstall the driver, when you restarted it would automatically apply the latest driver.
When you download drivers from the manuafacturer's site as they have been untested the results are unknown and may or may not function correctly.  OEM's can and do alter drivers to perform with their system.

Please note there is also a bios update. If you have not done that yet, I suggest trying that first as in can make a difference.

  • 8.1 Pro install now have no audio and video play

I have an older G60-443cl and changed out the HDD for a SDD.  Installed a new version of Windows 8.1 Pro.  Everything works but my audio and video.  The audio drivers are installed and working properly (according to my system) but even on the speaker icon where you adjust the volume there is no sound not even the little beep when you change the volume.  I went to my adminastrative tools and checked and the following is what i guess i should have:
Open windows Control Panel, open Administrative Tools and open Services.  Check that the following services are all showing as Status= Started and Startup Type= Automatic
    Audio Service
    Multimedia Class Scheduler
    Windows Audio
    Windows Audio Endpoint Builder

I grasp that after changing the drive to a SSD and installing Windows 8.1 Pro you lost your audio.  Drivers are showing as installed and working properly but you have not audio.
When I checked the driver page for your notebook I noticed that Windows 8.1 is not a supported Operating System.  With this being said HP does not provide the drivers as it is an untested OS on your system.  OEM's may and sometimes do alter drivers to perform correctly with your system.

  • Y410p, Y510p: SLI is not working in Win 8.1

QuestionWindows 8.1 is now available.  With the latest Nvidia drivers for 8.1 x64, SLI is not an option.  There are various suggestions to roll back to earlier (or earliest) Nvidia drivers for a solution.  It is true, that with these drivers, SLI is now an option - and it is possible to set it to Enabled. However, it doesn't work.
I have 8.0 and 8.1 in dual boot, for easy comparison.  SLI in 8.0 - clearly working... great performance.
SLI in 8.1 - not SLI performance, and in GPU-Z, it is clearly shown that one GPU is not under any load (also, not getting hot... further evidence).
At the moment, I have to use the 8.0 install only for gaming.  Can someone please tell me -
    1. Is 8.1 currently supported for the Y510p
    2. If so, when can we expect drivers for SLI
    3. Has anyone found a good workaround?
AnswerAfter updating to Windows 8.1 and related Nvidia graphic card drivers, customers may experience the following symptoms
    -          Second graphic card is not detected or SLI is disabled
    -          Nvidia panel indicates only one graphic card instead of two
    -          Can install the graphic card driver but SLI is not working
    -          SLI is enabled with legacy drivers but performance drops
You need to update vBIOS (video BIOS) which Lenovo just released it on 29 Oct 2013.
    IdeaPad Y410p, Y510p:
NVIDIA GeForce GT750M Second VGA BIOS Update for Windows 8.1 (64-bit) - IdeaPad Y410p, Y510p
NVIDIA GeForce GT755M Second VGA BIOS Update for Windows 8.1 (64-bit) - IdeaPad Y410p, Y510p
Attention: Do not power off or restart your computer during the VBIOS flashing process, which will cause serious damage and improper functioning of your computer.
For Y400 and Y500 vBIOS, please check out this knowledge based article for more info.

So I got off from talking with Lenovo Rep. I also wanna get the y410p with sli. He/She seemed kinda slow... but oh well. You have been connected to ^Sirish Tallapragada.
Thank you for contacting Lenovo Sales Chat. My name is Sirish. My rep id is 2900713381. Happy to help you today.
Hi I am interested in purchasing the y410p either with nvidia 750m or 755m sli. Do you have any idea when they are releasing the ultrabay graphics modules for these? They already have the ultrabay 650m for the y400s so I'm guessing you guys will continue the trend.
    Yes, We have that machine.
Yes, but they only have one graphics card in it. Is there an ultrabay module for the y410p's?
on the site, its called sli, like the y510p's do
The Y410p is available with the GT750m and the GT755m
Yes I know, but there is an ultrabay slot in the Y410p.
Which can be used to put in another gt750m/gt755m graphics card. This can be done on Y510p via putting this in: (I gave the link for the ultrabay 750m for y510p/y500)
will this option be available for the Y410p is my question
    Okay
Will lenovo release the card I mentioned above that fits the y410p? The current one only fits the y510p
The link that you gave is for Y510p
    I know.
Will you release a similar model that fits the y410p?
    Yes, We will do that.
That might be available next month
Ok, great, I am looking forward it as a Christmas present. Thanks, that's all my concerns for today
I've heard other forums saying that they keep on saying in on month but I don't trust lenovo anymo....

  • Cannot print all documents in a Portfolio

Using Acrobat 9.1 for Windows the "All documents in portfolio" option in the print dialog (which online help suggests to use) is simply not present. Any idea why this is?
So I have to keep printing all documents individualy which is a pain obviously.
    Thanks for any help
    mwfn1

I am having the same problem using Adobe Acrobat Pro on Windows XP SP3, but none of the suggestions have worked.
No matter what layout I choose, with no files selected, all files selected, or only a few files selected, the only "Print Range" I get in the print dialog box are the standard choices of All; Current view; Current Page (greyed out); and Pages (greyed out).  I simply can not get the choices of "All PDF Files" and/or "Selected PDF Files" to appear under the Print Range.
    I have tried:
    Selecting and saving the various layouts without previews;
    Creating brand new portfolios wihin Professional 9.3.3;
    Selecting differenct printer drivers; and
Performing a complete uninstall and reinstall and update to 9.3.3.
No matter what I do, I can not get "All PDF Files" and "Selected PDF Files" under the Print Range to appear.
This problem does not appear on other machines opening the same portfolio (opening the same portfolio on other machines I get the "All PDF Files" and "Selected PDF Files" under the Print Range).  It only appears to be a problem on my laptop, which is a big problem as it is my only machine.
    Any ideas?

  • T400 audio is sometimes distorted/grainy...

My T400 is pretty good, except that every so often, the sound goes suddenly distorted, or sounds as if there were a loose wire in the chain... the sound just BREAKS up and starts being unstable.
This will go away sometimes when I reboot.
This will go away sometimes when I mere move the computer from place to place.
The movement thing makes me thing it IS a loose connection somewhere, or perhaps a bad sound chip.
Has ANYONE experienced this before?  If I were to tell Lenovo about this, what do you think they would do with it (it's still under warranty)?

Message Edited by tbessie on 11-25-2008 11:22 AM

Tim, I guess I'm going to join you on your thread, as your problem seems to be closest to what I'm experiencing. The other threads I've been on (i.e. http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/message?board.id=T_Series_Thinkpads&thread.id=16642) seem to be describing a more serious and continuous problem, as opposed to something that comes and goes.
My problem (as you read in the linked thread) only occurs from time to time and fairly randomly. Its a skip/skipping in audio streams. I wouldn't describe it as grainy, just an interruption or stuttering in the audio. I can only be assured it will occur at or near startup (often the Windows startup sound breaks up), while opening and closing the lid or if the LCD turns off with power settings, and (oddly enough) while playing Windows solitare. It tends to occur more while graphics-intensive things are going on, but not always. I have tried updating and rolling back drivers, and performed a factory reinstall of Windows without luck.
BTW Tim, did you try running the DPC latency program I spoke of in the linked tread? I'd be interested to see if your system looks similar to mine in that respect (it doesn't require any kind of install, its just an executable).
Here's my system idle (with no audio skips), and after closing and reopening the lid (first red bar while closing, other two while opening), respectively:
The idle latencies are sad by themselves as my 5-year-old desktop looks like this:
Also, what's your system's model number? I'm curious how similar our hardware is.
