99% CPU on Front Row with Snow Leopard, possible workaround...
This might be helpful for some who have experienced this issue as well. It seems that Front Row will continue to work in the background when you exit from it using Apple - Q, but if you exit using the remote, holding down the Menu button for a couple of seconds it completely quits. You can check using Activity Monitor.
I have similar problems.
I have an AirPort Extreme with two USB hard drives connected to it. One drive is for media such as our iTunes library and some movies. The other drive is used as TimeMachine backup.
After upgrading to Snow Leopard we only have sporadic access to the media drive with our two laptops (MacBook Pro and MacBook) and the TimeMachine backups have stopped working completely because TM can not connect to drive. Sometimes Finder can se the drives, but most of the time it does not. When drives are visible in Finder, most of the time we can not browse the folders on the drives at all.
AirPort Utility can detect the AirPort Extreme but when I attempt to configure the unit manually the program can not read the AirPort Extreme's configuration.
The AirPort appears to work all right when it comes to accessing the internet.
Apple needs to fix this AirPort debacle ASAP!

If you are running iTunes 10.4 under Snow Leopard, it will be running as a 32-bit application. That is why you don't see any option to force it to run in 32-bit mode. iTunes can only run in 64-bit mode within Lion.
I'm using the latest iTunes on both a SL install and a Lion install. On SL, where it's running as a 32-bit application I can continue to use Front Row exactly as I have always done - browsing playlists and downloaded TV shows from my iTunes library. On Lion, with a reinstated Front Row, I cannot access anything from my iTunes library - even when forcing the application to run in 32-bit mode. This is because the underlying frameworks are all 64-bit and it is these that Front Row must access in order to draw down content from an iTunes library. And poor old Front Row, being a native Snow Leopard 32-bit only application, doesn't have the capacity to drive these 64-bit frameworks.
From your post it looks like you haven't yet updated to Lion. If you will be wanting to reinstate Front Row once you do make the move, then don't update iTunes. From the other posts on this site, it looks like those who've reinstated Front Row and haven't updated iTunes are enjoying all the features of Front Row that they had in Snow Leopard.
If you have no intention of upgrading to Lion, then you can upgrade iTunes and still enjoy Front Row in the way you currently do. -
I have an iMac Core Duo 2GHz (yes, first Intel iMac). I have Snow Leopard v10.6.8 (latest/last MacOS version I could load) with the most recent Security Update (2013-003).
I have two issues with Front Row:
• Some of the movie files will not show the images, but I can hear the audio.
• On other movies and TV shows they start fine, but within a few minutes the audio is out of sync with the images, running about 3-5 seconds ahead... Looks like a bad dub of a Japanese movie from the 60s.
Now, I know it's related to Front Row, because when I jump over to iTunes and start the same movie or TV show it begins where I left off in Front Row, but images are fine and audio is suddenly in-sync.
However, with Snow Leopard being 2 major upgrades back - 3 if you count the upcoming Mavericks release - I doubt this registers as a "brouhaha" on Apple's radar screens. Then, again, maybe the spirit of Steve won't tolerate this Microsoft-like quirk, even if my iMac is still chugging along after 7 years and multiple MacOS X upgrades & updates...I think I found my answer... or culprit. It has to do with Snow Leopard, and my iMac Core Duo, being the last of the dying breed of 32-bit systems, and that iTunes v11.x is 64-bit (heavily, at least)...
Guess I need to break down and replace my 7 year old iMac, even though it still works beautifully (otherwise). -
Front Row in Snow Leopard fails with Airport Extreme disk
I'm using an Airport Extreme basestation (fast ethernet) to connect a USB hard drive over ethernet to my Mac Mini (1.83 Core 2 Duo with 1 GB RAM) running Snow Leopard. If I put an alias to my movies folder (all H264) on the Airport disk in my Movies folder on the Mini's HD, Front Row can see them. However, when I attempt to play a movie from the Airport disk, Front Row hangs with a black screen for several minutes and then reports an error relating to unrecognized file format. After this error Front Row will sometimes even fail to see other files that it previously saw on the Airport disk. If I move the same movies to the Movies folder on the Mini, Front Row sees them and plays them with no trouble. I did not rename the movies when I moved them to the Mini.
All of this worked properly in Leopard.
It seems as though Snow Leopard is losing connection to the Airport disk in Front Row, although the connected disk still works properly in Finder.
Any thoughts?I have similar problems.

I had an iMac with Snow Leopard 10.6.8, I downloaded and installed Lion, did not make me any questions. After the reboot I get this fatal error: Panic(cpu 0 ......) Kernel trap ......

HP Scanner will not initialise with Snow Leopard using iMac or MacBook Pro.
A work around has been found.
Insert a memory stick into the front of the all-in-one HP. I used a 64MB in the MS/DUO slot.
Press scan menu. Select the option--Scan To Memory Card.
Printer should already be connected via USB to the computer.
This should open iPhotos on the computer.
Once the scan is complete, select Import All on the bottom right of iPhotos.
After that the option becomes available to email. Select full size.
The computer then opens client email with the scanned image prepared to email.
Note: Printer function is not affected with the upgrade to Snow Leopard; it is just the scanner which will not initialise.Thanks. You might post a query to that thread WRT to the C4100 series machines. The new HP Scan app that comes with my C4200 series machine works.

Mac Pro will not boot with Snow Leopard - need help!
I have had a lot of issues with Snow Leopard since I upgraded from 10.5.8. Most of my problems started after installing Office 2007. I finally wiped the hard drive and reinstalled everything. No problems until last week. Start up was taking longer and had to reboot a couple of times because of grey screen. So I would just put computer to sleep. Yesterday the computer was frozen on screen saver with scrambled rows of pixels on screen two and the main monitor had a frozen image.
I initially pulled all peripherals out and pulled the power plug for 5 minutes. I have left the peripherals out and pulled the second monitor as well. I tried pulling the power plug during a few more starts but nothing gets me to a complete start up screen.
I have tried resetting PRAM and VRAM and tried a safe boot. I tried booting from Snow Leopard and my Leopard disk stayed on either a blue or gray screen with spinning beach ball (on gray screen).
Put original install disk in and booted from using D to check the hardware. Good news is that the hardware test was OK. I did the extended test.
All different kind of start up problems.
- Some start with start up sound goes to Apple logo to blue screen to grey screen with beachball
- Some start ups with no initial sound then Apple logo to blue screen to grey screen with no cursor or beachball
- Some start ups with no sound to gray screen to blue screen to grey screen.
I have no problem wiping the HD1 again but I can't even get the OS disk to be recognized with holding the C key during start up. This last time it went to a blue screen (holding the C key) and a cursor.
I don't know what else to do - Please help!!!There are lists (MacIntouch and MacFixit) of hardware / software support issues with 10.6. Accelerateyourmac is another place to watch.
There were some really long threads back in Sept about printer driver support.
The 7300 firmware was more about Windows support; those cards are failing and dropping like flies (how DO they know 3 yrs has expired anyway?) and they don't support SL features like OpenCL etc so I'd invest in ATI 4870, best graphic card and works in all models Mac Pro.
Lots and lots of bootable clones for backup. Never need to wipe and install again. -
Need to get game to work on macbook with snow leopard?
Downloaded Civilization Vfrom the app store on my macbook pro with lion, then moved it (via flash drive) to my macbook with snow leopard. When I open it, it asks me for the apple ID I downloaded it with, but after that it never opens or stays in the dock. Its like its killed the second it opens. Is there a way I can force it to stay open?
We need to know which model you have. To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When the System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier. Then post that information back here.

Brand new 27" iMac with Snow Leopard has constant hard disk activity
I just purchased a new 27" iMac which was an upgrade for my 24" with Leopard. I have used my older machine for a good year and not noticed any hard drive activity when idle.
Now on the new machine with Snow Leopard I constantly get hard disk activty every few seconds.
This will happen from:
1) Restart
2) leaving at login screen
3) loggin in and not running anything.
4) Computer screen in sleep mode.
5) well, all the time really.
I have looked at the activity monitor and can see spikes every 5-10 seconds.
I have turned off all processes possible, watched processes for CPU spikes, etc to no avail.
Is anyone else having the same problem and if so can they suggest a fix? I originally thought it may be something writing to a log every so often but I have no idea what and how to find it.
Using iStat just confirms the activity.
Hope you can help as this is driving me mad!

I would start by checking each of these items, making sure you have the latest versions of each & that they are compatible with Snow Leopard. Do the same for any Firefox extensions or any plugins associated with any of these applications. In particular, chicken of the VNC hasn't been updated since 2006 & what little compatibility info I can find for it suggests it supports only Tiger (10.4) & 10.3.9. The Download Xmarks page indicates that it is beta software.
Also note that some of these items may do more than just run as applications. On first run or install, some might install startup or login items, or preference panels that remain in effect even when the application is not running. Check /Library/StartupItems & /System/Library/StartupItems -- both are empty by default, so anything you find in them is suspect. Likewise, check the System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items tab. Anything you find in them that does not appear to come from Apple (like iTunes helper) is suspect. Also check the "Other" category of System Preferences. -

hi im just trying to figure out how i cn use front row with my macpro? has anyone figured out a way , or know how to do it? i would prefer if i didnt have to buy a remote but i will if i have to. thanks heaps

Right now, Apple only supports Front Row on Macs that have a built-in infrared receiver and shipped with an Apple remote. However, when Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) is released, it will include Front Row for all Macs that are compatible with Leopard (like your Mac Pro). You can use the keyboard to run Front Row (Apple-esc opens it, for example), so you'll have an option if you upgrade when it's released.

Aperture is very slow with Snow Leopard

I updated my MyBook with Snow Leopard. The (big) problem is that Aperture 2.1.4 is now very slow when I make change to images. CPU usage is very high and Aperture is unusable.
What can I do?
Thanks in advance.zemitch - I also use one of the slowest machines capable of running SL, but my your graphics card may be different than mine. But I also store my masters on an external drive and that wasn't the issue.
I found rebuilding the database of Aperture when starting up helps a bit, but the biggest improvement is to do cropping/straightening AFTER the other adjustments. That changes my workflow, but with no crop/straighten, the other adjustments didn't not show the horrible slowdown.

HP 1312nfi Multi-funtion printer & brand new Macbook Pro with Snow Leopard

I just got my Macbook Pro with Snow Leopard May 2010. I can only print and fax with my 1 year old HP 1312nfi color laserjet multi-function printer. I cannot SCAN at all. I tried loading the software that came with the printer but it wouldn't install the 'Print Director' as I had on my old iMac (with Leopard). Then I went to HP and it said not to install the software that came with the HP printer because Snow Leopard has it all. I read that there are 3 ways to scan from my computer which none of them work. I brought up the printer then clicked printer setup and when I try to bring up the 'print utility' from the last tab, it won't open anything. Where is the printer utility now? Why can't I scan? There has to be a way. HELP please?Found the answer on the HP site. It's the original software that works with this printer OS X 10.6!!

i am deleting files through my trash in my macbook pro (2010) and then emptying the trash can, but my hard disk space is not increasing! i recently upgraded to lion and the problem is new, wasn't the same with snow leopard! HELP!!!!!
When i press command+I (Get Info) i see that there is 140 GB "Available Space" on my hard disk but when i click on my hard disk icon on the desktop, and then press "space" i only see 102 GB free!! What the f*???

Can I use Front Row with my Macbook closed?
I just got a mini-dvi to video cable for my macbook. I love using front row with it but I was wondering if there was a way that you could use front row with the laptop closed. Oh and I'm using tiger, so its not the new version of front row.
With your computer attached to a keyboard you should be able to wake it from sleep and run it properly with the lid closed.

Microsoft Office 2004 (Word) unable to save files
I have been running Office 2004 on my Intel iMac with Snow Leopard for some time and all of a sudden I cannot save a document. Word just stopped responding and I have to force quit. I can open Word and create a new document but I cannot save it. I reinstalled Word but that didn’t help. Then went to the Internet and found at least one other Mac user having the same problem which it suggests is caused by a recent Mac Security Update:

So I check for a new Mac Security Update and sure enough there was one. I downloaded it and now Word seems to be working, as it should. I can both open and save files. The only problem remaining is that when I open Word I get the following error message “An unexpected error occurred while trying to load the Microsoft Framework library”. I contacted Apple but they were unable to help.
How can I get rid of this error message?Look, I realize you might have to get your machine working, so this is how you revert back.
Restore proceedure to pre-Security Update 2012-001 v 1.0 & v 1.1
#1 Backup your personal data off the machine.
Backup files off the computer (not to TimeMachine). If you don't have a external drive, get one and connect to the USB/Firewire port and simply drag and drop copy your User folder to the external drive, it will copy all your files. It's best to have two backups of your data off the machine when trying to restore.
Disconnect all drives now to prevent any mistakes from occuring.
#2 Reinstall OS X 10.6 from disk
Get out your 10.6 install disk and make sure it's clean and polished (very soft cloth and a bit of rubbing alcohol, no scratches) If your disk is borked, you'll have to order a new one from Apple with your serial number.
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk (wired keyboard, internal optical drive), use Disk Utility First Aid to >Repair Disk of your internal drive (do not format or erase!!), Quit DU and simply re-install 10.6.
Note: Simply reinstalling 10.6 version from disk (without erasing the drive) only replaces 10.6.8 with 10.6.x and bundled Apple programs, won't touch your files (backup anyway) or most programs, unless they installed a kext file into OS X itself. (only a few on average do this)
#3 Update to 10.6.8 without Security Update 2012-001 v1.0 or v1.1
Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8 via Software Update, but EXCLUDE THE Security Update 2012-001 by checkinig the details and unchecking the blue check box.
#4 Reinstall any non-working third party programs
When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that require kext files installed into OS X, you'll know, they won't work when you launch them or hang for some reason as they are missing the part they installed into OS X.
If for some freakish reason you get gray screen at any time when booting (possible it might occur when you reinstall older programs), hold the shift key down while booting (Safe Mode, disables kext files) and update your installed third party software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.
