I discovered that I could use two 4 pin cables from my power supply to plug into the 8 pin power slot on MoBo as well as the 24 pin power.  I'm a complete novice/newbie to the extreme so I essentially got lucky.  It appears to be working so far, but I'm skeptical.
If you find out that your cause is the same as mine, make sure you plug both 4 pins in securely, its a bit of an odd fit.

  • MSI 990FXA-GD80 updated POST code "99"

I started my computer up last night after 3 months of using it and now it is posting a 99 code when I start the computer. I can't get to bios or boot. Keyboards will not work (both PS2 and USB). BIOS was completely up to date for nearly 3 weeks.
This morning, to no avail, I tried a new power supply.
At this point I have tried all of the following:
    -Disconnecting HHD (SATA and POWER)
-Disconnecting Opitical Drive (SATA and POWER)
-DISCONNECTING ALL F-PANEL (PWR SW, PWR LED, HDD LED, RESET SW)
-Disconnecting the USB and HD AUDIO
    -Disconnecting ALL fans.
    -Mounting and remounting the motherboard
    -Mounting and remounting the CPU
-Attempting to use a new video card
-Attempting to use a new power supply
-Placing MOBO on a different surface
-Reseting the CMOS via the on board button and removing the battery
-Using only 1 stick of ram to boot
    -New PSU
Basically I am booting the PC with the power button on the MOBO and the only things connected are the 8 pin MOBO power, the CPU, 1 stick of ram, and 1 of 2 different working video cards.
After doing all of those things, the MOBO stills post code "99" on the screen and on the MOBO itself. Additionally, keyboard does not work. Furthermore, I cannot access my BIOS or boot screen.
The original video card and the replacement video card both work on another PC therefore they are not the problem.
Thus, at this point, I have narrowed the malfunction down to either the following two components:
    -Motherboard
-CPU (which I doubt, but do not have a AM3+ mobo on hand) or another AM3/AM3+ processor
Any suggestions or advice are more than welcome and needed.
I am considering RMAing the motherboard...

Hopefully the cpu isn't the problem, wish there was a way for you to test it out. A computer shop perhaps?
Just to be clear, you removed the mobo from the case with just a cpu, cooler, 1 stick ram & psu and don't hear the no vga beep?
I see you already tried a new psu.
Hope you get it right soon, good luck I think you are right it's either the cpu or mobo.
Yes. The GPU is working fine I tested it in another computer. I installed another working GPU, it did the same "99" post.
Unfortuneately, there are 2 PC shops close by. 1 of them is a "mom and pop" type place that really doesn't get too deep in to technical aspects and doesn't care much for AMD products. The second is a shop that only carries very low end products as well as some i3 type proccessors and mobos.
Thus, since none of the computer stores give a flip about AMD, I am out of luck in that aspect. I have quite a few AM3 boards laying around, but that does me no good with this Zambezi.
On a side note, I decided to remove the processor. The processor and the heatsink became merged together. What I mean when I say they became merged is that the thermal paste become basically a superglue between the heatsink and the processor (the FX-4170 naturally runs hot, thus, AMD has included an upgraded heatsink in it with better thermal paste). Anyhow, in order to remove the thing I could only get the mounting lever about a little over half way up. Therefore, on the back row, the pins bent a little (I would say there were making somewhere between a 80-85 degree angle orthogonal to the board). I took a credit card and a screw driver and straightend the pins, stuck it back in, still posted the same thing.
Last but not least, I read over the mobo specifications and realized that it was backwards compatible. The MSI 990FXA-GD80 AM3+ AMD 990FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard supports the following CPU types/sockets:
    Quote
FX / Phenom II / Athlon II / Sempron 100 Series
I realized I had a (working) AMD CPU HDZ955FBGMBOX Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition 3.2GHz AM3 125W Retail, thus, I mounted it on the MOBO... SAME CODE POSTED...
    It must be the motherboard.

  • MSI 990FXA-GD80, POST error code 54

I have just assembled a new system:
M-Board: MSI 990FXA-GD80  (UEFI BIOS with factory version E7640 AMSB50, indicated by green label on BIOS chip)
CPU: AMD Phneom II X6 1055T
    RAM: 2 x Crucial DDR3 1333MHz 8GB REG/ECC
PSU: Fractal Design Newton R2 1000W PSU
    GPU: Asus GeForce EN8600GT Silent/HTDP 512MB
I start the sytem and get 3 distinctive beeps from the speaker and error post code 54
    I have tried the following:
    1. Remove one RAM stick and start the system with just one RAM stick in slot DIMM1. Result: Same error codes, 3 beeps and post code 54
    2. Removed the RAM sticks completely (in hope to get an error code indicating RAM is missing). Result: Same error codes, 3 beeps and post code 54
    3. Switching the RAM sticks (DIMM1 <-> DIMM2). Result: Same error codes, 3 beeps and post code 54
    4. Tried the processor on another board (ASUS) that I know works. The processor runs fine on the ASUS board.
    5. Activated the "Easy Button 3" Reset button. Result: Same error codes, 3 beeps and post code 54
    6. Activated the CL_CMOS button at the Back Panel. Result Same error codes, 3 beeps and post code 54
    7. Clear Data position of Clear CMOS Jumper JBAT1 (with power disconnected),  and the back to Keep data position. Result: Same error codes, 3 beeps and post code 54
All fans are working OK. Everything seems to be correctly connected after double checks.
Is there anything else I can do, without returning the MOBO to shop?  I guess I can not update the BIOS if I do not get passed the post?
Anything else that can be wrong?
I am greatful for any initiated help.

No, I have not tried to boot the MOBO outside of the case. However I have come a little bit further:
I bought a less expensive memory stick of just 2GB; Kingston RMD3-1333/2G and put this in the DIMM1 slot.
With this memory the PC booted and completed the POST. This allowed me to download and flash the latest BIOS; 7640vB8 from MSI.
I then turned off the PC and re-installed the 8GB Drucial memory stick in DIMM1. I then got the original problem back.
My conclusion is that the 8GB memory from Crucial is not compatible with the MSI 990FXA-GD80 board and the Phenom II X6 processor.
If anyone have any idea how I could get my memories from Crucial to work on the MOBO I would be grateful. I have paid dearly for them.
    Just saw this:
    Quote
    RAM: 2 x Crucial DDR3 1333MHz 8GB REG/ECC
you are using the wrong memory type.
you need to use no REG/no ECC memory

    MSI r9 290 4GB Gaming
    Silverstone ST-1000
    60GB Kingston SSDnow
    2TB Seagate Hybrid Drive
    Problem:
When I hit power the Debug Code reads 19, FF, 2b then resets continuously.
    History:
I had a similar problem when I first build the computer in February and reseting the RAM fixed it. About a month ago I had the mobo replaced through RMA.
The first time I had this happen when I built the computer it worked for a couple weeks before failing to post. The computer has been working for a few weeks since I RMAed the mobo.
    Steps taken so far:
    1. I reset the cpu
    2. Reset memory
    3. Moved memory from DIMMs 1/3 to 2/4
    4. Reset Video Card
    5. Checked all power cables
Does anybody have any idea how to fix this? I'm guessing that it is the memory but the memory has worked fine for like 9 months besides having to be reset.
Is there anyway to test this?
Edit: I just reset the complementary metal-oxide semiconductor and the debug only read FF (memory error). I reset the memory and the debug is going through the FF,19,2b sequence again.

I contacted kingston and they are going to replace the RAM. The online form made me put repair under reason for return because the RAM kit is discontinued. I called tech support and was told that they will either replace the kit with one they have in stock or give me options from kits they do have in stock.
Thanks for the help. It looks like I'm going to have to pilfer a 4GB stick from my HTPC for the next couple of weeks.

Looking for some assistance with debug error.  Followed clear cmos procedure including battery removal.

19 is Pre-memory South Bridge initialization is started
this could be either a bad board, unsupported bios or a damaged CPU! check that the cpu has no bent pins!
i guess you miss read the bios sticker

B4 means it has BIOS version 11.4
your CPU requires a minimum bios version of B5 (11.5)
you will need to eiter get a supported CPU or take the board to a computer shop for them to do it or Send the board to MSI to have them flash the bios for you!

    8GB DDR3 RAM: 2 x 4GB Kingston Sticks
2x Nvidia GTX 560 Graphics cards with SLI Bridge: 2 GDDR5 RAM

    1x CD/DVD Re-writer
Windows 7 64 bit - Latest Windows Updates
    950w Power Supply 230v 5Amps 50HZ
I am currently experiencing the debug 19 error on the debug status code.
The system had been working fine with all this hardware installed for 2 weeks, but when i added an extra fan and started the system it displayed this error.
I previously had another MSI motherboard of the same make and model prior to the 2 weeks of installing this one which was displaying the same error. I since sent that back to MSI and they sent this one as a replacement, but its now doing exactly the same thing as the previous motherboard.
Some assistance with this would be grateful as i'm fed up of the issues with this motherboard right now, and considering going back o Gigabyte.

  • MSI 990FXA GD80 Debug on board is d6

MSI 990FXA GD80 >>>> Debug on board is show d6 means????

No Console Output Devices are found that code is a DXE code meaning it cant find a vidio output device!
so 6 posibuilitys here to whats causing it:
1: Poorly Seated graphics card - remove it and reseat
2: Poorly seated CPU - remove the cpu and reseat it correctly...
3: Bad Video Card BIOS- your graphics card may be defective or may require its VBIOS to to flashed
4: Defective Graphics card - will require the card to be RMA'd for replacement
5: conflict between the board bios and video card - may require the board to be updated to support the video card
6: Defective board - will require the board being RMA'd for replacement
try your video card in another Computer and see if its functioning?

  • New 990FXA-GD80 direct from MSI shows FF code, can't get to BIOS screen

I had a 990FXA-GD65 stop working, RMA'd it to MSI for repairs, got a 990FXA-GD80 in return, and it only immediately shows an FF debug code, can't get to a BIOS screen at all. System fans power up (even CPU fan, heh), still nothing. I've tried many troubleshooting steps including:
    1. Swapping in a new PSU
    2. Swapping in a new video card
    3. Disconnected everything but the boot drive, video card, and keyboard (even tried a PS/2 kbd)
    4. Pulled all-working parts from an identical PC (with the 990FXA-GD65 board) and still the GD80 board just shows FF code
Next steps? Do I have to RMA this already-RMA'd board? Can I get one that actually works this time? This PC has been down for almost a month now and I'm starting to lose patience.

  • 990FXA-GD80 Code 19

    Hello-
I am putting my new system together, and am getting error code 19 on my display, which seems to be "Pre-Memory Southbridge Initialization Has Started" according to the AMI doc posted in another thread. I did not, however, see a solution to that problem, which is what I'm looking for. I'm running:
    Corsair HX-650 650 Watt PSU
    MSI 990FXA-GD80
BIOS unknown since it's not POSTing
    AMD FX-8120 CPU

2x1TB SATA HDD (WD and Seagate)
    Sony SATA DVD/CD Burner
    Zotac GTX 570 GPU
Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it. MSI has done well for me in the past for sure, so I am hoping for the best here too.

Then we have a problem, because I don't have an AM3 ready, non-FX chip available.
Here's a question: if error 19 is related to southbridge initialization, which takes place before Memory and CPU initialization, would I really need to update the BIOS in order to get that error addressed?
You can't boot with current BIOS and this CPU

  • 990FXA-GD80 bios code error 54

    Hi there.
My old motherboard (an Asus Crosshair II Formula) got berserk some days ago and I switched to a new 990FXA-GD80 Military class II.
Well, I cannot pass boot up because the motherboard stops at the ram check level giving me an error "54" message.
Tried everything to no avail (clearing CMOS, swapping here and there ram sticks, no sas controller installed)
The only thing I've not tried yet is changing the cpu (will try tomorrow).
    My config specs:
    CPU: Phenom II X4 905e   Deneb HD905EOCK4DGI    65W
    RAM: Corsair Vengeance Low profile CML16GX3M4X1600C7 16GB (4X4GB) 1600Mhz
    HDD: Corsair Neutron SSD 128GB
    HDD2: Seagate 2,5" 1TB sata
    Controller: Adaptec 51245 Sas controller
VGA: Msi based on some Amd chipset (cannot remember)
    PSU: Cooler master 1.000 W
At first I thought it was some sort of compatibility problem between ram and motherboard but as I see on the web Corsair Vengeance is supported, so I'm starting to think it's a faulty motherboard (unless the CPU is gone mad too).
Every component was perfectly running before the old motherboard fried.

I am having nearly the same problem as gnoppi, except I get 3 beeps & error code 19 first for just a couple of seconds, then it changes to code 54.  Like gnoppi, I also just converted over from a ASUS DDR2 MB (M2N32-SLI Deluxe) to this 990FXA-GD80 MB.  I've tried eveything mentioned on this board, and even bought a common model PNY 4gb (PC3-10666) RAM stick to try out, but it still does the same.  I read from another post here (https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=153161.0) that error 19 could indicate that the bios needs updated for your CPU, but my CPU is a fairly common model AMD Phenom X4 945, & it worked ok on the old ASUS MB.  I've also try disconnecting absolutely everything one at a time, including the main hard drive, monitor, & video boards (everything except the CPU), but I always get the exact same error code sequence.  Does anyone have any suggestions before I start messing with the CPU?

After Bios B.40 i got same strange bug, sometimes when i load a oc profile my pc get stuck at 9A error and the only thing that i can do to recovery is use ctrl+home to recovery it, clear cmos is unless.
After a lot of tests to try understand what was happening i got the answer.
My CPU is a X3 710 (waiting for bulldozers) so i always use the unlock cpu core feature. I used this x3 with unlocked core for 2 years without any problem, so the locked core is good.
If i load a oc profile with unlock cpu core feature enabled from a already unlocked stage, everyting is ok, but if my bios seting "unlock cpu core" is disabled and i load a oc profile with it enabled my pc do 6 beeps, restart and get stuck at 9A post code.

    Hi guys
After a Phenom 2 x6 killed my MSI 790FX-GD70 and having no support from MSI at all about getting it fixed I vowed I would never use MSI again but I decided to give them the benefit of the doubt about the a 990FXA-GD80.

    They are
    Athlon 2 x2 235e
    990FXA-GD80
    4Gb Muskin DDR3
Everything worked great and passed 5 quick runs of Linpack just to validate everything.
2 hours later I get a post code 19 which according to the forums is un-supported CPU, but the CPU worked fine a few hours before?
I'm stuck, is my board borked?
    Thanks in advance.

do you have 2 or 4 sticks of RAM? (asking because that 16GB HyperX Predator 2133 @ 1866 is vague)
that 3d mark report may be wrong as 667Mhz is not what your saying its 1333MHz as its DDR (Double Data Rate) RAM and DDR3 is just a revision number (Revision 3 as they are from the 3rd incarnation of DDR memory) so its the number multiplied by 2 not 3! (check the reported speed in CPU-Z and if its really at 1866 it should be around 933MHz as that's the half of the Double Data Rate)
now as for the drop in performance that's pretty normal as its dependant on your CPU's IMC (Internal Memory Controller) to how good it is and how it handles sending data to it and with memory they have 2 variables:
1: Bandwidth - this is the Frequency you see and the higher it is the more bandwidth its running
2: Latency - This is the Timings EG: 11-11-11-30 and with them numbers the higher they are the more latency it has as lower numbers are faster
so its a Balancing act between Frequency and Timings and one may cancel out the other so like your reporting the Ram at 2133 probably has much more latency and is cancelling out the benefit of more bandwidth and that's always a good possibility as the CPU may not like the slack Timings at all as CPU's usually send small data sets to RAM (a GPU on a graphics card is different as they prefer lots of bandwidth and have no cares about latency) but with a processor you have to get a balance or the 2 factors start to in alot of cases erode performance as its all wrong!
Note: 1866MHz is usually the sweet spot in terms of performance and above that it starts to degrade!
