990fxa-gd80 no post, then no boot

Ok so first off when i received this board i did a bench test with just the CPU, hsf, and power. First it posted FF so i reseated the CPU (phenom 2 x4) and it worked fine. I added memory and continued to work so i went ahead and installed it in the case along with vga and everything was still working fine. I loaded the software off the disk, it restarted a few times and everything was still working fine. I went to bed, went to work the next day and when i came home the computer was on but the post wasnt displaying and it wouldnt wake up. It wouldnt let me restart and it wouldnt let me power off from the case or from the board so i had to turn the psu off. I took it out to bench test again with just cpu and power and it would only power on from the button but not power off, i would have to turn the psu off each time. Then after doing that twice and no change it wouldnt even power on, the leds would flicker and then...nothing. So now it wont do anything but that. I tried a different psu and it did the same thing, i put the cpu on the old mobo and its working fine. Am i missing something here or is the board just dead? Im not very experienced in dealing with these problems as this is only the third motherboard ive installed and never had problems until this one. Ive read other people having this same problem but ive seen no solutions.

Sorry about that. Updated.
1. Tested board outside of computer with just cpu, power, board power, and hsf. Posted FF.
2. Reseated the cpu, then it worked fine.
3. Added memory, still worked.
4. Installed in the case and populated the board, started fine. Debug display cpu temp.
5. Went through bios, installed software off the disk during which it restarted a few times and nothing wrong.
6. Came home from work the next day and the debug wasnt displaying, and there was nothing to the monitor.
7. I tried to restart, restart would work.
8. I tried to power off from case button and it wouldnt work, i tried to power off from board and it wouldnt work.
9. Turned off the psu, then back on. It starts up from the button but still no debug/post codes. Nothing to monitor, nothing working. Still wont turn off from buttons. Had to cut psu again.
10. Took it back out the case to test again with just cpu, power, hsf.
11. Pressed power and it does the same thing.
12. I try it again except this time power just flickers and then nothing, its back off. (power button still lit up though, but doesnt work unless i turn off psu and then back on and thats the only way to turn it off) LEDs and fans just flick on for half a second then back off.
13. Tried a different psu, same thing. Tried cpu in a different board, and it works fine.
So this is where im at. Im guessing its just dead but i dont know what happened because it worked the night before.  Im wondering if im missing something here, is there anything else i can try?

  • Msi 990fxa-gd80 looong post

Hello and thanks fokr reading.  I built a lot of computers from the p2 thru the first of the athlon 64s, then I movd away from my stable of gamers I built for and was to poor myself to do any building.
So now I offer to help a guy at work upgrade and am having some issues.
We put the 990FXA-GD80 mobo in with 4 4gig corsair dominator (1600) sticks in it.  Video card is msi HD .com .com6970 lightning.
I had to manually set the mem speed to 1600, for what that's worth.
Here's the problem. Cold or warm, when we turn on the machine, it stays on a pre post screen with ad blinking dash in the top left and a code in the bottom right. I believe the code sits on 3 for a bit then 20 seconds later it quickly goes to 99 then flashes the bios splash screen and boots fine.
I am not at the machine and annoyingly the guy won't bring it to work for me to take home, so igotta go back Saturday to work at it somemore, I just wanna hear anything anyone has to say about it.
I did not yet disconnect the sata drives and boot to see if the drives are hanging it but I will. Are the any other suggestion in the meantime?
    Thanks

  • MSI 990FXA-GD80 updated POST code "99"

I started my computer up last night after 3 months of using it and now it is posting a 99 code when I start the computer. I can't get to bios or boot. Keyboards will not work (both PS2 and USB). BIOS was completely up to date for nearly 3 weeks.
This morning, to no avail, I tried a new power supply.
At this point I have tried all of the following:
    -Disconnecting HHD (SATA and POWER)
-Disconnecting Opitical Drive (SATA and POWER)
-DISCONNECTING ALL F-PANEL (PWR SW, PWR LED, HDD LED, RESET SW)
-Disconnecting the USB and HD AUDIO
    -Disconnecting ALL fans.
    -Mounting and remounting the motherboard
    -Mounting and remounting the CPU
-Attempting to use a new video card
-Attempting to use a new power supply
-Placing MOBO on a different surface
-Reseting the CMOS via the on board button and removing the battery
-Using only 1 stick of ram to boot
    -New PSU
Basically I am booting the PC with the power button on the MOBO and the only things connected are the 8 pin MOBO power, the CPU, 1 stick of ram, and 1 of 2 different working video cards.
After doing all of those things, the MOBO stills post code "99" on the screen and on the MOBO itself. Additionally, keyboard does not work. Furthermore, I cannot access my BIOS or boot screen.
The original video card and the replacement video card both work on another PC therefore they are not the problem.
Thus, at this point, I have narrowed the malfunction down to either the following two components:
    -Motherboard
-CPU (which I doubt, but do not have a AM3+ mobo on hand) or another AM3/AM3+ processor
Any suggestions or advice are more than welcome and needed.
I am considering RMAing the motherboard...

Hopefully the cpu isn't the problem, wish there was a way for you to test it out. A computer shop perhaps?
Just to be clear, you removed the mobo from the case with just a cpu, cooler, 1 stick ram & psu and don't hear the no vga beep?
I see you already tried a new psu.
Hope you get it right soon, good luck I think you are right it's either the cpu or mobo.
Yes. The GPU is working fine I tested it in another computer. I installed another working GPU, it did the same "99" post.
Unfortuneately, there are 2 PC shops close by. 1 of them is a "mom and pop" type place that really doesn't get too deep in to technical aspects and doesn't care much for AMD products. The second is a shop that only carries very low end products as well as some i3 type proccessors and mobos.
Thus, since none of the computer stores give a flip about AMD, I am out of luck in that aspect. I have quite a few AM3 boards laying around, but that does me no good with this Zambezi.
On a side note, I decided to remove the processor. The processor and the heatsink became merged together. What I mean when I say they became merged is that the thermal paste become basically a superglue between the heatsink and the processor (the FX-4170 naturally runs hot, thus, AMD has included an upgraded heatsink in it with better thermal paste). Anyhow, in order to remove the thing I could only get the mounting lever about a little over half way up. Therefore, on the back row, the pins bent a little (I would say there were making somewhere between a 80-85 degree angle orthogonal to the board). I took a credit card and a screw driver and straightend the pins, stuck it back in, still posted the same thing.
Last but not least, I read over the mobo specifications and realized that it was backwards compatible. The MSI 990FXA-GD80 AM3+ AMD 990FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard supports the following CPU types/sockets:
    Quote
FX / Phenom II / Athlon II / Sempron 100 Series
I realized I had a (working) AMD CPU HDZ955FBGMBOX Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition 3.2GHz AM3 125W Retail, thus, I mounted it on the MOBO... SAME CODE POSTED...
    It must be the motherboard.

  • 990FXA-GD80 BIOS POST Loop

I purchased this board last month and ive had a possible bios bug pop up.
If i reset or reboot my system, the bios gets stuck in a post loop
    FF > b4 > 19
and it repeats until i power cycle it, which is when it screams overclock settings failed.
    Spec:
    AMD FX-8320 @ 4.00GHz
    BIOS: 11.13
    Memory: Corsair Vengeance 2x 4GB

I have the same issue. I cleared the cmos (via the button and then via the battery pull)
I can start one time, get all the way to the Win7 login screen. Then I shutdown, try to restart and my MB shows the following message:
2b->FF->19, blinking very rapidly. The DDR_Phase 2 light also blinks.
THe only way I can reboot is to clear the CMOS and start again
as I was writing this, about 2 mins passed an the computer restarted.
I tried putting windows in hibernate mode, and again, the system restarted after a pause and the same symptoms.
When running, a small red LED light blinks sporadically to the left of the JFP2 panel (left of the debug box). The DDR_Phase 2 light is now solid
    I have:
    990FXA-GD80 MB
AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz Processor
Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)  in the slot closest to the processor
SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series MZ-7PD128BW 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC SSD
    XFX One ON-XFX1-PLS2 Radeon HD 5450 1GB 64-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Video Card
Anyone know why this might be happening? Thank you.

  • 990fxa gd80 v2 Post check codes and unlikely temp readings

Hi all im new to this forum so forgive me if this isnt the right place to post a concern.
my main concern is the checkdown codes that you see at startup only after overclocking the cpu i get a lowercase b next to all the codes, everything starts up and works fine only these codes before the over clock never had a b in front of them it was only numbers and i cant find any information about this anywhere.Im thinking it could be an issue with my power supply not having enuf power im only thinking this because once i have my cpu and ram over clocked if i overclock my GPU windows glitches and looses some of the windows graphical effects.
also my other concern is about temp readings.when i open AMD overdrive TMPIN2,3 and 4 are all over 250 Degrees C which seems highly unlikely the system would even run for very long at these temps. all other temps seem normal,CPU stays 52  and TMPIN1 stays 41 at idle.Any information concerning these will be greatly appreciated
    Further information my system is
    MSI 990fxa gd 80 v2
AMD fx 8320 clocked to 4.0 Ghz
    Gskill ram clocked to 1600 10 10 10 30
Geforce 550 ti cyclone 2 GPU
    ADATA 120 GIG SSD
    WD blue 500 GIG
    5  120mm hydro bearing fans
    Seasonic 520watt 80plus bronze power

like miklikit said those readings are ghosts as the pins will just be shorted and not connected to anything (if it was over 250C your board would me dead within 5 mins as whatever it was would start to burn)
what codes are they exactly and I will do my best to look them up and work out what they mean? (if there on for less then a few seconds each there nothing to worry yourself over its only if it stops on one for more then 5 seconds then you have an issue)
also that PSU should be ok as your system with what you have needs with a GeForce GTX 550 Ti - 24A and a 400W PSU minimum (add 50-70w for your extras + OC and you need 450-470W) <--- its close to the upper limit of that PSU so it may be a little on the lower end of what you really need (I would suggest 600W or more really for your setup)! (your errors you are getting may be its not got enougth power or your Overclock is unstable)

  • 990fxa-gd80 motherboard posting issue

    Hello everybody.
So a few weeks ago, i bought a new chassis for my PC, and 2 days after moving all the parts, the PC just stopped working. After checking the post codes, i realised that it was an issue with the gfx card, and so i got The replacement card today. After putting it in, I got a new posting code - 99 - the computer works if I plug in a different card in the same slot.
    Anybody got any ideas ?
    Thanks in advance!

First try a full cmos clear. >>Clear CMOS Guide<<
If that doesn't help, remove the board and check for extra stand offs under the board. Perhaps even build it on a non-conductive surface out of the case, taking care to re-seat everything.
    Actually I mis-read this: Quote
After putting it in, I got a new posting code - 99 - the computer works if I plug in a different card in the same slot.
So a different vga works fine, but that one still doesn't? That sounds like they didn't fix the card. Can you try the card in a different computer?

  • MSI 990FXA-GD80, POST error code 54

I have just assembled a new system:
M-Board: MSI 990FXA-GD80  (UEFI BIOS with factory version E7640 AMSB50, indicated by green label on BIOS chip)
CPU: AMD Phneom II X6 1055T
    RAM: 2 x Crucial DDR3 1333MHz 8GB REG/ECC
PSU: Fractal Design Newton R2 1000W PSU
    GPU: Asus GeForce EN8600GT Silent/HTDP 512MB
I start the sytem and get 3 distinctive beeps from the speaker and error post code 54
    I have tried the following:
    1. Remove one RAM stick and start the system with just one RAM stick in slot DIMM1. Result: Same error codes, 3 beeps and post code 54
    2. Removed the RAM sticks completely (in hope to get an error code indicating RAM is missing). Result: Same error codes, 3 beeps and post code 54
    3. Switching the RAM sticks (DIMM1 <-> DIMM2). Result: Same error codes, 3 beeps and post code 54
    4. Tried the processor on another board (ASUS) that I know works. The processor runs fine on the ASUS board.
    5. Activated the "Easy Button 3" Reset button. Result: Same error codes, 3 beeps and post code 54
    6. Activated the CL_CMOS button at the Back Panel. Result Same error codes, 3 beeps and post code 54
    7. Clear Data position of Clear CMOS Jumper JBAT1 (with power disconnected),  and the back to Keep data position. Result: Same error codes, 3 beeps and post code 54
All fans are working OK. Everything seems to be correctly connected after double checks.
Is there anything else I can do, without returning the MOBO to shop?  I guess I can not update the BIOS if I do not get passed the post?
Anything else that can be wrong?
I am greatful for any initiated help.
    /Phil

No, I have not tried to boot the MOBO outside of the case. However I have come a little bit further:
I bought a less expensive memory stick of just 2GB; Kingston RMD3-1333/2G and put this in the DIMM1 slot.
With this memory the PC booted and completed the POST. This allowed me to download and flash the latest BIOS; 7640vB8 from MSI.
I then turned off the PC and re-installed the 8GB Drucial memory stick in DIMM1. I then got the original problem back.
My conclusion is that the 8GB memory from Crucial is not compatible with the MSI 990FXA-GD80 board and the Phenom II X6 processor.
If anyone have any idea how I could get my memories from Crucial to work on the MOBO I would be grateful. I have paid dearly for them.
    Just saw this:
    Quote
    RAM: 2 x Crucial DDR3 1333MHz 8GB REG/ECC
you are using the wrong memory type.
you need to use no REG/no ECC memory

  • 990FXA-GD80 sleep and post-sleep issues

    Hi,
I've recently upgraded to an MSI 990FXA-GD80 motherboard paired with an AMD 8320 Black Edition CPU. My previous set-up was with an MSI 790FX-GD70 and AMD Phenom II X4 955 BlackEdition. I also put in a new PSU (see below).
    Full spec
    Board: MSI 990FXA-GD80
    Bios: Version 13.1
VGA: Asus DirectCU II TOP Radeon HD 7970
    PSU: Seasonic X-Series 650W (54A 12V rail)
CPU: AMD FX 8320 Black Edition 8 Core Processor Socket AM3+
    MEM: 8GB Mushkin DDR3 PC3-12800 Redline Ridgeback (7-9-8-24) Dual Channel kit (2x4GB)
    Boot HDD: Corsair P128 128GB 2.5" SATA-II SSD
    Storage HDD: 1TB Samsung HD103UJ Spinpoint F1
    COOLER: Noctua NH-C12P
    OC: None
    OS: Windows 7 64bit Home
Rather than do a complete reinstall, I simply removed all of the old drivers that I could, replaced the hardware, and let windows do its thing with the updates. Then ran LiveUpdate and cleaned up any further remnant drivers I could find. Everything seemed to work fine.
The RAM is running at auto frequency, timings and voltage - I know this is under its rated values, but I wanted to make sure everything was in good shape before mucking about with OC settings.
I'm having a few minor issues though.
When the board goes in to sleep mode after being left alone for a while, it can only be woken by hitting the power switch. After a search of these forums, I see that can be altered in the BIOS - no problem.
Once the board wakes from sleep, however, performance is extemely sluggish. Load times for games more than double, and frame rates drop to about 30-40% of where they were before.
Rebooting fixes this, but I really shouldn't have to be doing that every time the board goes to sleep.
Would updating the BIOS help with these issues (I've read a few negative comments about v 13.1)? If so, which version?
Are there some power management, or other settings, in the BIOS that are causing the RAM or CPU to only partially wake up?
How can I stop the motherboard going in to sleep mode at all? I'm pretty sure I found a BIOS setting to do this on my last board, but am missing it on this one.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks (in advance).

Yea..I've seen a lot of odd stuff. I don't blame MSI, I think it's a combination of the newer UEFI BIOS, all the green power stuff, and BIOS changes to make Windows 8 compatible.  Every motherboard seems to have it's quirks these days.
You are basically doing what I do now. My computer is set to never sleep, and monitors off in 15. I normally turn my computer off manually when I'm done with it, unless I'm downloading from Steam or something...then I want it to keep running. So this "work around" has me happy.
I hear you on the clean install. It's such a pain in the butt getting all my software back in order. I literally spend a week just getting all my games downloaded from Steam, lol. I'm riding the AM3 platform until I absolutely no longer can.
The good news, our CPUs, while never being as fast as their Intel counterparts clock for clock will get faster over time as the software industry get's more and more in line with multi-core programs.  Just keep feeding them new vidoe cards.

    FX 8350
    MSI r9 290 4GB Gaming
    Silverstone ST-1000
    60GB Kingston SSDnow
    2TB Seagate Hybrid Drive
    Problem:
When I hit power the Debug Code reads 19, FF, 2b then resets continuously.
    History:
I had a similar problem when I first build the computer in February and reseting the RAM fixed it. About a month ago I had the mobo replaced through RMA.
The first time I had this happen when I built the computer it worked for a couple weeks before failing to post. The computer has been working for a few weeks since I RMAed the mobo.
    Steps taken so far:
    1. I reset the cpu
    2. Reset memory
    3. Moved memory from DIMMs 1/3 to 2/4
    4. Reset Video Card
    5. Checked all power cables
Does anybody have any idea how to fix this? I'm guessing that it is the memory but the memory has worked fine for like 9 months besides having to be reset.
Is there anyway to test this?
Edit: I just reset the complementary metal-oxide semiconductor and the debug only read FF (memory error). I reset the memory and the debug is going through the FF,19,2b sequence again.

I contacted kingston and they are going to replace the RAM. The online form made me put repair under reason for return because the RAM kit is discontinued. I called tech support and was told that they will either replace the kit with one they have in stock or give me options from kits they do have in stock.
Thanks for the help. It looks like I'm going to have to pilfer a 4GB stick from my HTPC for the next couple of weeks.

  • Bios Takes Five Minutes to Boot - 990FXA-GD80

Just built a new computer and from the "get go" the bios has taken approximately five minutes to boot. Error codes are 99 (last 4 minutes) than switches to B4 (last 1 minute) than the system boots just fine. Yes. Please open a ticket with MSI Tech Support so they are aware of the mouse problem with your mainboard. They can then try & duplicate it & come up with a revision to hopefully correct the incompatibility; http://support.msi.com

  • 990FXA-GD80 BIOS update failure POST F2 + 26, 36, 19, F9

Hoping to get some help here I've seen some great people that I am hoping will know any other tricks to help possibly save my motherboard. It's my first build and everything was running beautifully, and unfortunately the last thing I decided to do was update my BIOS to the newest version... I just ran the downloaded version, installed and restarted, upon restart I get nothing on screen. POST error code just says F2.
I have been Googling for a couple of days and tried a lot, most of the time I was forwarded to this great forum where people had similar problems but for me to no avail. I have tried the following:
    - reset CMOS
    - Disconnect PSU
    - Make formatted USB with versions (I tried all of them, including them in folders + zip)
    - Left x1 RAM in fourth slot
When I put a USB with a BIOS driver in it the POST LED error code just gives F2 (and unpredictably sometimes 36 comes up ). The USB LED just flashes, I've tried this multiple times for up to an hour at most. Secondly when there is no USB drive inside the POST LED seems to go on a loop of codes... here they are (not sure of right order)... 19, 26, 36, F9, F2... when doing this the red LED next to it flashes and so does the DDR_PHASE +2 LED
Sorry if this is a recurring problem that you've seen a lot (I know Svet has!) but I would really appreciate the help. I know a lot of you will say it is bricked but surely there is something I can do... I love this mobo and I will not let her die!

it has the latest version of 13.5 on it out the box! (it was produced 14 months ago)
download the latest version and retry!
I'm doing that now, just plugged in USB and turned on, USB LED is flickering, and POST is just on F2... seems like the same drama as the rest, I will leave it on that for now, how long do you recommend? Also, the middle part of the motherboard (the metal part where it says OC Genie II) gets really hot, is that normal? I have a home office fan on it now with the case open to keep it cool, I don't know if it was like that when everything was running smoothly (in the good old days lol).
What do you suggest I do if this doesn't work?

  • Post Code 9A Error, 990FXA-GD80, Bios bug

After Bios B.40 i got same strange bug, sometimes when i load a oc profile my pc get stuck at 9A error and the only thing that i can do to recovery is use ctrl+home to recovery it, clear cmos is unless.
After a lot of tests to try understand what was happening i got the answer.
My CPU is a X3 710 (waiting for bulldozers) so i always use the unlock cpu core feature. I used this x3 with unlocked core for 2 years without any problem, so the locked core is good.
If i load a oc profile with unlock cpu core feature enabled from a already unlocked stage, everyting is ok, but if my bios seting "unlock cpu core" is disabled and i load a oc profile with it enabled my pc do 6 beeps, restart and get stuck at 9A post code.
I have sure that in Bios B.30 this wasnt happening.

I was talking about a bios BUG that can damage the mainboard, and a lot of ppl cant recovery their bios like i did.
I posted to help ppl with same issue and alert others to avoid it.
I informed MSI about it using the right channel.

    Hello!
    Overclocking questions go somewhere else.
If you don't absolutely need to update BIOS to solve a problem, resist the temptation.
And if you do... Go back to the version that made you smile!
We ask people to state the max ampères the PSU can do. There is a list on the PSU box.
