990FXA-GD80 Sudden Problems

Motherboard: 990FXA-GD80
BIOS: 11.10 (most recent)
CPU: AMD FX-8120 8-Core
Memory: 2x4GB G.Skill
Graphics: GeForce 8800GT
OS: Windows 7
I get the feeling I'm in for another long stretch of troubleshooting, so posting this with all the current symptoms. Maybe someone has ideas that'll save me some time.
Computer was working mostly fine when I left the house for about 30 minutes. Came back to a black screen, unresponsive mouse/keyboard, and I couldn't even shut the computer down from the front power button.
The only odd thing happening prior to this was my USB headset losing sound, forcing me to disable/enable it to get it working again. Maybe related, maybe not.
Upon restarting the computer, the post screen didn't see my mouse or keyboard, hung for a while trying to load Windows, and went to a "PARITY ERROR" of some sort.
I moved my mouse and keyboard from the USB3.0 ports to USB2.0 and after a reboot or two, I got into Windows, but Aero was disabled, graphics were set to 800x600, and everything was sluggish.
Current symptoms:
- Motherboard showing FF debug code through entire boot sequence
- BIOS unable to get CPU/case heat and #1/#2 fan reads, CoreTemp reads fine
- GeForce 8800GT on IRQ10 but "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"
- Renesas Electronics USB 3.0 Host Controller: "This device cannot start. (Code 10)"
- Windows 7 loads slow, sluggish performance
Have tried:
- Disabling unnecessary motherboard components (Audio, IEEE 1394, etc.)
- Reinstalling graphics drivers
Heat shouldn't be a factor. My system seems to run really cool. According to CoreTemp my CPU's only at 18 Celsius right now. I've reset the BIOS to no avail.
I'd kind of like to think video card problems could cause all these symptoms since I can justify replacing that, but the on-board problems (Debug LED, BIOS heat/fan reads) are suggesting a motherboard failure. And I bought this motherboard just a month ago after replacing a defective, new 880 series. My luck can't really be this bad, can it? I'm even outside the return window for this motherboard now.

my computer usually does that too with my graphics setting it to 800x600 usually when my Graphics card has overheated while idle (good sign you need to clean the heatsinc on it or you dont have enougth air flow)!
I'm fairly confident that's not the issue. As mentioned above, my CPU temp would have been around 18C when this happened (sitting on the desktop). I have 3 fans blowing in from the front and top, 2 blowing out the back.
I'm pretty sure the graphics card isn't the source of this issue. I just tried booting with it completely disconnected and I still only get FF on the debug LED. It's like the motherboard has lost the ability to detect its own status. And I imagine whatever is causing that is also interfering with the normal operations of the video card and USB3 controller.
Weird thing is, the graphics card works well enough to be working for me right now, but even nVidia's own software isn't recognizing it.

    hi,
another weird problem which wasnt fixed by flashing to the last bios:
all is running fine with bios set on "default settings", sli is detected and the gfx's work with sli actived or disabled
i had no problems to OC my actual cpu on other boards (870A Fuzion & NF980-G65: 4ghz;CPUv:1.428; CPU.NB:2600; CPU.NBv:1.255)
i tryed to oc the [email protected]  (greenpower disabled, turbo disabled) 200x18; when windows open my 1920x1080 resolution have gone for 800x600; the nvidia MSI GTX285 are no more detected, the nvidia control panel is gone and it seem that the mobo have switch to the integrated chipset.
the same happen if i try to use the oc genie button
all goes back to normal if i reboot and reset the bios to default settings...without oc
did i miss a new option to desactivate to get the oc working or is it a sort of problem between the nvidia GFXs and OCing the CPU? looks really weird

  • 990fxa-gd80 HDD problem

    Hey guys.
I have a problem with my drives. I have a A-data ssd and Samsung F3 1TB connected. The problem is, stay with me here, that the system doesn't see the samsung HDD when I go into My computer. BUT BIOS detects both discs. AND Device manager detects both discs. And it reports that it works just fine. I wanted to use the SSD as a system drive and the HDD for everything else.
ANY advice would be VERY welcome.
    My system:

  • 990FXA-GD80 sudden poor performance

I bought this board less than a month ago.  It is replacing a Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3.
I started off with all standard settings and it ran well.  Then using the CPU ratio and voltage I took it to 4.6 ghz and ran OCCT and IBT.  It ran fine.
Then I dropped it back to 4.5ghz and took it back to 4.6 ghz using the FSB frequency and NB voltage.  I have been reading some guides and it seems like this is the way to do it.  Anyway IBT showed stable and using this method it also showed better Gflops.  This is in all stress levels from standard to max.  I did not use OCCT in this time.
Then something happened.  The clock lost over an hour and for some reason game play has taken a big performance hit.  The computer never BSOD or even CTD.  It starts and runs fine with good temps, but seems to be just loafing along.  While playing the most stressful game I have, Bioshock Infinite, the video cards used to be running at 90-99% and overheating.  My solution was to enable vsync which dropped temps well down.  No more!  The VCs are now at 50-80% and running cool without vsync and frame rate is barely at 60fps.  It used to be 120+.
Also, I tried OCCT Large Data Set again which uses 3584mb of memory and it errors out in 1-2 minutes.  And yet IDT says it is stable and it still runs ok.
I am hoping it is just a setting in the bios that needs tweeking, but don't know where to look now.

Ok, I dropped back to 4567mhz and it went 1 hour in OCCT LDS without errors.  Would like to learn how to get it to 4.6ghz stable.
But most importantly, why is the frame rate in games only half of what it used to be?  50-80 fps is unimpressive when it was 120-180 fps a week ago.

    Hello guys,
This problem I will describe has occured to me in two games NBA2K12 and DIRT3 so far.
During gameplay suddenly the keyboard freezes and does not respond holding the last known command. (if for example I turned right in DIRT3 it will continuously go right).
In order to solve the problem I installed a very old PS2 Microsoft keyboard and fortunatelly I do not have any problems. The USB keyboard that I use is a Microsoft Wired Keyboard 600. I have installed microsoft drivers and keyboard programs with no result. I also changed USB port, no go, also connected it to a USB3 still no go...
Have you experienced something like this? Do you have any suggestions before contacting MSI support?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Problems with 990FXA-GD80 and AMD FX8350

    Hello,
I built this PC back in March, and ever since I have been having problems with it. I get BSOD every now and then. It usually only happens when I am playing a game or trying to render a video. The last time I tried running Prime95, my computer locked up and didn't report the error or go to bluescreen. I thought I might post my issues here, because I can't figure out the cause. I believe it's a piece of the hardware that is causing it.
I ran memtest86 with all passes, and I checked my HHD for errors and nothing came back.
I'm not sure if my BIOS version it out of date, but it says I am on V11.13. When I scan on Live Updater 5, there are no updates so I'm not sure if I need to just flash it or what.
My BIOS settings are all default, except I changed the CPU and DRAM voltages to higher values. 1.35V for the CPU and 1.65V for the DRAM. I seen it recommended in another thread so I figured I would give it a try. All my temps look fine by the way. I'm not sure if it has solved the issues though, I haven't tried playing much games or rendering a video.
If anyone might have an idea what is going on I would really appreciate any help. I don't know much about building PCs, so take it easy :P
    My full specs are:
    OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit
    CPU: AMD FX-8350
    Motherboard: 990FXA-GD80 V2
    GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD 7850
    Memory: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2133
PSU: CORSAIR HX Series HX750 750W
    HDD: Seagate SV35 Series ST1000VX000 1TB
I can post more info if needed, thanks!

    No replies?
First off that ram is 1.6V not 1.65V.  Your ram is ddr3 2133mhz which is an overclock ram speed.  Hopefully that works ok in "auto".
Next, your cpu is being starved for volts.  Set it to at least 1.4V.  Do not be afraid to go higher if it still crashes.
The bios is the latest for Win7.  I am using it and it works fine.
Do you have any monitoring software like HWiNFO64?  It shows my 8350 idling at 1435 mhz and using 1.32V-1.46V right now.  Under load it will be higher.  Yours will be too.

  • MSI 990fxa-gd80 PROBLEMS

Never in my life I have seen a more unstable motherboard....
Here is my configuration (the system is new, assembled yesterday):
    Cpu: AMD FX 8350
    MB: MSI 990fxa-gd80 (bios verison:13.2)
    Memory: Corsair vengeance 8x2GB 1866
    SSD: OCZ vector 128 GB
    Power: Seasonic 850 Bronze
    System: Windows 7 Ultimate 64
I need some help with the following problems if there is someone kind enough to help me:
    1. after a minute or 2 bios freezes (I think I managed to solve this by setting the correct speed for ddram; initially it's 1333 and I set it to 1866)
    2. Now the windows sees the 16 GB of ram but only uses 8 GB: 16.0 GB (7.95 GB usable); If I set the memory speed to 1333, the windows uses all memory but the computer resets after a few minutes in windows and the bios freezes the same. And after reset it doesn't boot anymore... I have to clear CMOS to make it boot again
    3. sometimes after a freeze, I reset and all kinds of artifacts appear on the screen, and the system is not booting
Does someone have any idea about these problems ? Have anybody experienced something like this ?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Are you sure? All my 990FXA-GD80-Boards have only four DDR3-Slots, not eight...
What happens, when you run the system with only one RAM-module? Check the one module first and the second module later.

  • Problem with msi 990fxa-gd80

Ok after a month of my new setup (8150fx,msi 990fxa-gd80 and kingston hyperx 1866 8gb) i tried to OC some the cpu . After all the settings are done and boot normally at windows i saw the core voltage was at stock 1.28v (using CPU-Z,core temp and amd overdrive) but before at bios i gave it 1,35v. Also i use a multi of x17.5 and fsb 233 but while checking from same programs (CPU-Z, core temp and amd overdrive) the multi goes at 16.5  If i use the amd overdrive i can set the cpu voltage and multi at 1.35 and x17.5 but only from there. Also the system temp at north bridge is a bit high 41 idle is that the correct temp ??? I am using the latest bios 11.10
Plz if anyone knows something about that or had the same problem plz tell me what should i do .

Is amd Cool n'quiet & c1e support disabled?
Also, when overclocking, I don't use amd overdrive (except for the vid card) or control center. Make all your bios changes in the bios.

  • 990FXA-GD80 a lot of problems in OC

    Hi guys!
I have a MSI MB 990FXA GD80 and with her, a lot of problems.
The first is with my RAM.
When I'm trying to increase my RAM frequency higer or equal @ 1000Mhz (2000Mhz for the both, i have 2x4Go GSkill PC17000), the MB boot normally but on Windows I have only 4Go @ 1000Mhz because CPUZ show me my RAM run in "Single chanel".
I tried to increase my VRAM to 1,706V (in bios) but without succes. I keep "Single Chanel". Same if i let timings in "auto".
    Before 1000Mhz it's working.
If I increase the FSB to 250Mhz I must to let "DDR3-1333Mhz" in bios.
    WHY?!
The second problem it's about the HT Link.
When my HT Link is higher or equal to 2100Mhz, I can have 3 pretty bips during reboot MB. After bips, she'll boot, on Windows it's working, but if i restart for there, I ll have 3 bips again.
    WHY?!
The problem with this MB, that's u can't know where you are with voltages. U can let in "auto" but if you want increase a frequency and u don't know a start voltage, that's sucks! You do with closed eyes.
Control Center is horrible, he never ever works!
I'm sad because i loved this MB, but if i can't do a good OC, that's useless. I wont sell it.
If you get some answers to my problems tell me.
    Thx.

    Quote
I would like to know if someone with this MB did a good overclock?
    What is the expected OC worthy of the 'good' rating? Then, in a subsequent statement, this is said;
    Quote
I get a good OC 24/7 @ 3910Mhz 230x17 on my 1090t on this MB, but i can't rise my RAM @1000Mhz (2000Mhz or more) in Dual Chanel. So why?
Why? Try other RAM? Any screen shots of CPU-Z Memory or SPD Tabs posted to have a look at so recommendations of what to try can be offered?
    Quote
I also have these issues, I've never managed to get my ram higher than 800mhz(ish). CPU (FX-8150) seems to be fine and can get over 4.2ghz easily but I've always had to scale back the memory.. Until somebody proves otherwise this board is useless for OC. I never imagined a motherboard could be as bad as this one, I've resorted to mostly default settings with OC-Genie turned off (1600mhz ram) to maintain stability.
Useless for OC? Seriously? Maybe the CPU IMC can't handle it, the RAM selection or quality stinks, or the settings aren't tweaked enough to find their sweet spot.
    Quote
they seem more concerned with the UEFI interface and whether or not certain mice work in it..
Darn right they are, & rightly so! That is much more important than dilusions of grandeur with an OC. Perfection of function at stock first! Then, advance to the exciting world of OC'ing with it's successes & failures.
    Quote
I'm a customer like an other, when i buy a thing, i want it works fine.
    If it works Auto/Stock/Default, then there is no legitimate complaint. OC'ing is a bonus & never guaranteed. Ever think to try maybe some AMD qualified RAM from another manufacturer? If you have suggestions or recommendations regarding BIOS's or the like, since this is not official MSI Tech Support, open a ticket with them & explain your problems;

  • 990FXA-GD80 FX-8350 BIOS 11.13 CPU Problems

    All,
Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.
I had an AMD FX-8150 installed on my MSI 990FXA-GD80 and updated to the latest bios: 11.13. This was no problem.
    Windows acted fine after reboot.
I do NOT Overclock the FX-8150 chip as I was not impressed with the performance potential of the FX-8150 when overclocked vs. stock settings. As such I left ALL BIOS settings at their stock settings with the exception of SATA MODE = AHCI.
However I do check stability of the stock settings with Prime95 and OCCT. Ran both for 60 minutes. And there were no issues.
I then reset bios to default status and then powered off my PC. Removed the AMD FX-8150 and installed an AMD FX-8350 (Vishera).
Powered on, clicked F1 to enter settings. restored defaults. Set SATA Mode = AHCI then saved and exited.
Windows booted just fine. However, ANY stress testing whether via: Prime95, OCCT or AMD overdrive fails with in 90 seconds.
The OS does NOT BSOD, however Prime95 recognized an error and stops as does OCCT and/or AMD overdrive. Temps do NOT get higher then 40 degrees Celsius in this short period of time.
I am NOT altering ANY bios setting: No frequency changes, No voltage changes. ALL default settings are intact.
I did use the jumper to clear CMOS, got into the BIOS, restored to default, set SATA MODE = AHCI, saved and exited. Reset the date and time. Rebooted, re-attempted the 3 above mentioned stress test software suites and all threes reported errors and stopped.
Is anyone else experiencing similar issues with this board with BIOS 11.13 using an FX-8350?
I've ran MemTest on the memory and this passes successfully.
I have another MSI board: 990FXA-GD80V2. I have the old FX-8150 in it right now. I just did a fresh install of Win 7 Ultimate 64-Bit, installed ALL windows updates and I will now update to the latest BIOS for it via Live Update 5.
Then swap CPUs and report my results.
Any and all help you can give will be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

    Thanks for your reply.
I have tested a number of different PSUs with both the 990FXA-GD80V2 and 990FXA-GD80 and the FX-8350:
    Corsair 1200AX
    OCZ ZX Series 1250W
    Rosewill Capstone 750W
    Corsair CX 600
The result is the same for any and ALL of the above PSUs. So I am convinced, that this issue is NOT PSU related. That is not to say that a faulty PSU could not cause similar issues.
I also agree that it is not a Thermal issue. With ALL default setting set in the BIOS, Prime95, OCCT, etc. ALL error our within the first 90 seconds and on my systems while using the following Heatsink/fan/Close-loop Liquid cooling solutions temperatures NEVER exceed 50 C before errors occurr:
    Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo
    Corsair H100
    Zalman CNPS11X
    ThermalRight Silver Arrow
I've tried the following memory options:
    G.Skill F3-2133C9D-8GAB
    G.Skill F3-17000CL9D-8GBXM
    Muskin 997008
    Muskin 997007
    Muskin 996997
    Muskin 996996
    Patriod PV38G160C9K
    All pass memtest86+
I have tried leaving the Memory settings set at default.
I've manually entered the timings and frequecy. (The highest bootstrap on this board is 1866, so If the memory was rated higher than 1866, 1866 was selected and the default clock frequecy of 200 was NOT changed. So for testing purposes 1866 was the highest possible setting).
Again ALL memory sticks pass memtest86+ on both 990FXA-GD80 and 990FXA-GD80V2
I've tried 3 separate FX-8350 CPUs on both motherboards. ALL combinations exibit the same symptons. That being under default settings, Prime95, OCCT, ect. fail.
I am convinced it is a voltage issue. I do not think the MSI 990FXA-GD80 and/or MSI 990FXA-GD80V2 with BIOS v. 11.13 ramps up the voltage fast enough when the CPU is stressed.
This opinion is speculative. But I think it is grounded in fact.
On these two motherboards ALL three FX-8350 become stable by changing CPU Voltage = AUTO to CPU Voltage = 1.365000
Anything less then this will produce an error in Prime95, OCCT, etc. with 15 minutes regardless of which of the above cooling solutions are used.
Any and all feed back will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
