990FXA-GD80 system Locks up in Game Play

I'm looking for any good ideas for testing or fixing ....
In July 2012, I built a system, and it seemed solid until November.  Now, it locks up 'after awhile' when playing games - it's played for as long as a couple hrs, and as short as less than 5 minutes before lockup up.  In locking up, video and audio stop (no sound, picture still on the display, frozen).  The only way to go again seems to be reset or power cycle.  MB Debug LEDs show 38-39 when locked up.  Games seen to lock up include Diablo III, Starcraft and Borderlands.  Leaving OC Gene on or off seems to make no difference.  No other OC options have been used.
I've ran FurMark and MSI Kombuster for hours with no failures.  I've ran the Windows 7 memory tester with no errors.  I've swapped out the Video card with a GeForce 9600 GSO and it locks up just the same.  It never seems to lock up browsing the internet, etc.  Anyway, I think this leaves the MB and CPU as the components where the fault must be.  I haven't found a good way to test these.
System:
Video Card: MSI R7950-2PMD3GD5/OC Radeon HD 7950; Bios Version: 015.013.000.010. Driver Version 8.921.0.0.   Motherboard: MSI 990FXA-GD80V2  911-7640-073.
Memory: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2133 (PC3 17000).
CPU: AMD FX-8120 Zambezi 3.1GHz Socket AM3+ 125W Eight-Core Desktop Processor FD8120FRGUBO.
MB BIOS Installed: B.D0.
AMD Chipset Drivers: 8.947.0.0.
OS:  Windows 7 64 Bit Home Premium, all updates applied (SP 1).
PS: Corsair TX 650 W.
Storage:  OCZ-Vertex3 ATA Device (120 GB STD).
CPU Cooling:  Corsair HD 100 - CPU temps never get above 34 C as reported by Core Temp.

I believe it's fixed, although I haven't played games with the final change.  Now that I've had this experience, Step 1 in diagnosing instability -
1)  Restore BIOS to defaults - even if you think it is already at defaults, and don't have any reason to think BIOS was changed at the time instability began.  It's and easy and quick thing to do - doesn't require taking any covers off.
I ran memtest86 and the system passed.  Then, I ran the system with only one stick of memory and alternated both sticks, and the system was completely stable.  Then, I put both sticks in, and just 'cause, turned on OC Genie.  The system presented a message saying no OC changes should be manually made with the system in OC Genie mode.  Of course, each time memory was changed, the Bios screen came up asking to save the new changes to the system.
With both memory sticks in and OC Genie on, the system just completed the full Intel Burn test successfully on 'maximum'.  As the system previously wouldn't complete the first of the 10 cycles on maximum, the prospects are good that the system is now stable.
As a side note - the Gflops changed from 24 and change with OC Genie off to 29 and change with it on, a nice bump.  I've been 'going to' play with OCing on this system for a long time, just never got around to it.  Now, I guess it will just run with OC Genie on henceforth.   Also, with Intel Burn Test on maximum and OC Genie on, Core Temp reported a 41 C max temperature.  Mostly, the burn test ran at 38 C (The Temperature offset is set at 15 in Core Temp Options).

  • Ipod Touch (2nd Generation) freezes and locks itself during game play.

While playing Diner Dash on my Ipod Touch 2G as the game action intensifies the machine locks itself and/or slows to the point that I have to wait several seconds for the processor to catch up.  This makes it very hard if not impossible to play the game.  The symptoms seem to mostly happen in games such as Diner Dash or Bejeweled.  Sometimes the same symptoms will happen in other apps as well.  They seem to get worse as the processor load increases.  I have the latest version of itunes installed as well as the latest OS update (4.something) as of 7/13/2011.  I have tried restoring the machine, uninstalling and reinstalling various apps, and turning off anything that would burden the processor and memory.  Nothing has helped much.  The machine has been buggy like this since it was new.  We sent it into Apple and they said nothing was wrong with it.  Also, there is no damage or abuse involved.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

Put it in a baggie and completly cover it with rice. leave it there for a week+ and it should work.

So here is my problem , when i got my mobo i upgraded it to the newest bios 11.8 , then i saw the max voltage was 1.449 so i desided that i am gonna do a hard overclock 1.5+ voltage so i downgraded the bios to 11.5. Then the problems came out. When i go in computer>properties it says 8gb(3.97 usable) , i oppened dxdiag and there my vram on each card was like 3.7gb. When i bench it is approx. 10-15 fps lower than before (when i had no system memory sharing).

  • 990FXA-GD80 steam games problem

    Hello,
I updated the BIOS to the newest official version for my mobo. However steam games are totally unplayable (eg space marine - I have an AMD FX 8120 BD cpu).
Do you know guys if the problem is the BIOS? (AGESA codes etc or a setting in the BIOS).
Is it solved with a BETA version; where can I receive the latest beta if possible?
    EDIT:
Just to add my system specs more detailed
    MSI 990FXA-GD80 BIOS 11.6, AMD-FX8120, Windows 7 64bit
RADEON HD 4890, 1GB (running on CATALYST DRIVERS 11.11)
    Kingston 2x4GB 1600Mhz
    PSU 750W
    OCZ Vertex 2 SSD 60GB

Bas is right...It was the first time and the last... no I am totally convinced that this is a BIOS problem... nobody can change my mind...(sorry guys) since this guy at the link I posted above has constructed a custom bios fixing this issue (as he claims, I will not try it due to guarantee reasons, that is MSI's job actually and that is what frustrates me the most since I have sent them the link). As I said this is not a "local" problem my windows installation is as light as it can be... overclock is not an option on my system (yet), quicktime (not installed), monitoring programs? I have none, only microsoft essentials and windows firewall are active, and I have followed a guide to exclude the steam folder from scanning
    http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1093560
No improvements, only by running a program OROCHI-CEG from this site
    http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?276698-A-fix-for-Valve-CEG-games-causing-BSOD-on-Bulldozer-issue/page3
Anyway since there is a workaround I will try to be more patient with MSI... But I have to admit that it frustrates me that BIOS updates come out late... (especially when this M/B costs 200euros a piece)

  • Hard system lock playing keynote.

Well I was able to play the keynote on my laptop several times only to run out of time and never finish watching it. It played fine everytime, but the other night i went to play it because i had time. And as soon as quicktime started loading it the system locked up HARD. The only thing I was able to do was hold in the power button. I then rebooted and it did a disk scan and gave me a "minor error" then it fixed it. I was back into OS X after like 20mins. Then tried to play it once more with the same result. Please help me.
    QT 7.0.4
All updates where in both days, to my knowledge nothing about the system changed.

nstgc : it's hard to tell if your problems are memory related, but memtst often needs multiple passes to detect errors.
How many passes did you let it make ?
Is it possible for you to take out say half of the memory chips and see if that changes anything ?

  • Problems with 990FXA-GD80 and AMD FX8350

    Hello,
I built this PC back in March, and ever since I have been having problems with it. I get BSOD every now and then. It usually only happens when I am playing a game or trying to render a video. The last time I tried running Prime95, my computer locked up and didn't report the error or go to bluescreen. I thought I might post my issues here, because I can't figure out the cause. I believe it's a piece of the hardware that is causing it.
I ran memtest86 with all passes, and I checked my HHD for errors and nothing came back.
I'm not sure if my BIOS version it out of date, but it says I am on V11.13. When I scan on Live Updater 5, there are no updates so I'm not sure if I need to just flash it or what.
My BIOS settings are all default, except I changed the CPU and DRAM voltages to higher values. 1.35V for the CPU and 1.65V for the DRAM. I seen it recommended in another thread so I figured I would give it a try. All my temps look fine by the way. I'm not sure if it has solved the issues though, I haven't tried playing much games or rendering a video.
If anyone might have an idea what is going on I would really appreciate any help. I don't know much about building PCs, so take it easy :P
    My full specs are:
    OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit
    CPU: AMD FX-8350
    Motherboard: 990FXA-GD80 V2
    GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD 7850
    Memory: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2133
PSU: CORSAIR HX Series HX750 750W
    HDD: Seagate SV35 Series ST1000VX000 1TB
I can post more info if needed, thanks!

    No replies?
First off that ram is 1.6V not 1.65V.  Your ram is ddr3 2133mhz which is an overclock ram speed.  Hopefully that works ok in "auto".
Next, your cpu is being starved for volts.  Set it to at least 1.4V.  Do not be afraid to go higher if it still crashes.
The bios is the latest for Win7.  I am using it and it works fine.
Do you have any monitoring software like HWiNFO64?  It shows my 8350 idling at 1435 mhz and using 1.32V-1.46V right now.  Under load it will be higher.  Yours will be too.

  • System lock ups when using hard disks

At first I thought I had the same issue as in this thread however after reading his logs I decided that it is unlikely since the topic opener seems to be getting a bunch of
Apr 4 17:00:15 daxteriv slim[708]: (Do:882): GLib-CRITICAL **: Source ID 46 was not found when attempting to remove it
, so I decided to start a new thread.
I am not getting anything in my logs when I look at them after the crashes. It seems as if whatever is causing the issue makes it impossible to write to the drives so nothing seems out of place until after it's too late, and quite obvious that something is wrong. The sole exception to this was some complaint about ata9.00, however this seems to have been a red haring since the complete removal of this drive solved nothing, though it did make the error go away.
I have run memtest, and prime95 (in windows since at the time I didn't want to boot my system) both coming back negative. I also checked for SMART errors, particularly UDMA errors. Again, negative.
Here are some previous threads of mine that I believe to be all related to the same issue:

    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=192704
[edit3] My previous thought was that this was a btrfs issue, however now I think it may be more hardware related.[/edit3]
Last night I was writing urandom to a new drive and I woke up in the morning to see that it had stopped prematurely, but not due to lack of space. The system had not locked up completely, which was new, however, as soon as I did something that accessed the disks (tried using the Gnome Dash), all hell broke loose. I immediately hit the power button, which would start a shutdown. I didn't know about REISUB, or I would have tried that. In anycase the shutdown failed and I had to hard reboot.
The evening before I was playing games just fine and doing normal activities.
Also, the other day, while booted into the live cd I think it started to crash since it was acting extremely bizarre, but I shutdown, successfully, before it could do more than complain a lot. At the time I was in the middle of scrubbing a btrfs volume after a system lock up. I think, but am not certain, that I saw on my motherboard "A5" which, according to the manual indicates "SCSI reset", but I had an extremely bad viewing angle. I know neither if what I think I saw was correct, nor do I know if the system was again in the process of a meltdown.
In general there is no activity that seems to be able to instantly trigger this, though in each case, if my memory serves me well, there was a constant stream of data either to or from a HDD.
My set up is that I have 5 HDDs, and an SSD. One HDD has Windows, my fallback installation of Arch, and daily backups. Another drive, which I just installed a few days ago currently only has single 50GB btrfs partition that is not part of any sort of larger volume. I also have three other drives each with four parttitions each involved in a btrfs volume. At the top is a 175 GB volume in a RAID0 configuration,  after that is a 25GB partiton in RAID1, then a 650GB partion (RAID1), and the remainder of the disk (about 80GB) is in single. The RAID0 is has games on it and sometimes for short term storage (a few hours), the 25GBx3 RAID1 is used for Arch as well my ~/.local, ~/.cache, ~/.thunderbird, ~/.mozilla, and ~/.config. The 50GB partition I mentioned is currently doing the job of this volume, and was not mounted last night, but has been before. The 650GBx3 is used for long term storage of just about everything, in particular ~ is mounted here. The single configured volume is used for downloads, storing ISOs and installers. The SSD is used for caching those partitions used in the RAID0 volume with bcache. I DO NOT think this is a bcache issue since the RAID0 volume has never had any errors.
My motherboard is a ASUS X79-DELUXE which has the SATA controllers: Intel X79 Express Chipset, Marvell 9230, ASMedia 1061.
[edit] Oh, I'm on kernel 3.19.2 and btrfs is 3.19.
[edit2] Also, I converted the RAID0 to a single in case that matters.
[edit4] I finished scrubbing and copied my "journalctl -b" output to pastebin. I can't see any thing that might raise any flags. http://pastebin.com/WXpbpTuc

  • System Lock-ups. What can be wrong?

On to more serious issues.. .
I am experiencing system lock-ups on the brand spanking new computer I just buildt.(Yeah, yeah.. . Anti-static and all other thinkable precautions were taken.. .)
Needless to say it's annoying the hell out of me. I can't work and I can't play with a situation like this.. .
The system just hangs and the only solution is to press the reset button.
This usually happens in games or when scrolling a window. Less frequently it also happens when doing nothing. It only seems like it's getting worse - more frequent that is.
Are there any known issues with TwinMos RAM and nForce2?
The RAM and CPU are running on the same clock. The error persists when running the RAM at it's native clock too.
I'm running Catalyst 4.11 and Bios Information says 113-95702-100.
The BIOS of the MB has not been flashed by me - as out-of-the-box.
    Nvidia drivers version 5.10.
No overclocking of any sort of any device.
I will be running the full monty in Memtest x86 over night, but the RAM DIMM is spanking new and has been handeled with the utmost caution. The first five tests returned nothing wrong.
Another peculiar hick-up is that sometimes after the lock-up and after I've pressed the reset button the BIOS seems to take forever to detect the IDE devices. If I power off and on again, the IDE detection happens in a snap. Very, very strange.. .
Edit: I have a sneaking suspicion that it gets worse until I power off/on - after that it will take a longer time for the error to return. I haven't verified this empirically, but I have a hunch.. .
I really hope there's someone with helpful insight to this problem out there!
    Thank you for your time.

Woops. Seems like I don't have access rights to the last link.
It seems like downflashing to B30 is the only way to go for me as I'm having *major* stability issues, even with no overclocking.
Heck - I even had to reset and reboot the machine when trying to write this post just now!
I must say I've never experienced such outrageous instability with any of my other MSI MBs before.. . Not from any other make for that matter. This is just incredible.
I'll flash it tomorrow (if I can find a damned floppy somewhere). For now I really have to work.
    Fingers crossed!
    Thanks again for great input!

  • 990FXA-GD80 Code 19

    Hello-
I am putting my new system together, and am getting error code 19 on my display, which seems to be "Pre-Memory Southbridge Initialization Has Started" according to the AMI doc posted in another thread. I did not, however, see a solution to that problem, which is what I'm looking for. I'm running:
    Corsair HX-650 650 Watt PSU
    MSI 990FXA-GD80
BIOS unknown since it's not POSTing
    AMD FX-8120 CPU
4x4GB DDR3 Corsair CMZ4GX3M1A1600C9 (played around with single DIMM in different slots to be sure)
2x1TB SATA HDD (WD and Seagate)
    Sony SATA DVD/CD Burner
    Zotac GTX 570 GPU
Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it. MSI has done well for me in the past for sure, so I am hoping for the best here too.

Here's a question: if error 19 is related to southbridge initialization, which takes place before Memory and CPU initialization, would I really need to update the BIOS in order to get that error addressed?
You can't boot with current BIOS and this CPU

  • 990FXA-GD80 - Incorrect voltages

    Hello All,
I just picked up a new MSI 990FXA-GD80 V2 am experiencing some interesting issues. My CPU is a 960T that unlocks to a stable hex-core. On default settings, everything works as it should. When I set a voltage manually in the BIOS, things start to get wonky. Cool 'n Quiet only has two voltage states: one is .04v - .06v over the voltage I set in the BIOS, and the second (which only comes into play at high load) is .04v - .06v over the first. For example, I have the CPU Voltage in the bios set at ~ 1.31v. The voltage for idle through ~ 80+% utilization is 1.35v - 1.37. The voltage at max load is 1.40v - 1.42v.
The board came with BIOS version 13.5. I reflashed the BIOS to see if that might have something to do with it. I even flashed back to a D4 BIOS and the results are the same.
Is this typical behavior with the D4/D5 BIOS and a AM3 CPU? If anyone could shed any light on this, I would greatly appreciate it. I will be finishing up my troubleshooting, and isolation of the problem when I get home from work tonight, then I will be contacting MSI as well. I will be sure to post any reply I receive from them here.
The system specs are as listed in my sig.
    Thanks for your time.
P.S.: I prefer to overclock with Cool 'n Quiet on because the CPU is cooler and far more efficiently utilized with the lower power states. It is, at max, a 1% penalty on a Phenom II. The increase in the longevity of my CPU worth the extra 30 - 40 Mhz to me.

Quote from: Fredrik on 11-August-11, 07:37:52
Odd you get correct(?) readings from software programs - they have no separate thermometer. Sure, BIOS may be incorrect. That is a common problem, but then your monitoring programs should be up the wall, too. More common is in fact, the BIOS readings are correct and programs are wrong.
Comparing with a different system is impossible. Case and cooling can not be the same; a case built for a Pentium II wont cope nicely with a 6-core processor of today.
well apparently its happening to me, and im not the only one. That other dude using water cooling and his bios temps are 20C of true readings. looking at it from a coding perspective maybe its just adding 20 to the temp. by mistake, but i can't say for sure since I am expert in programming languages not so much into BIOS and firmware kinda stuff.

  • 990FXA-GD80 Consistent Freeze on OS Install

I just purchased hardware for a new system build and everything has worked fine up to trying to install Windows 7 on it. If I boot normally for an install it always locks up at "Expanding Files" between 2-3%. It used to always blue screen but after swapping the RAM it now just freezes. More on that in a second... If I boot in safe mode, I can make it through the first portion of the OS install (Copying Files, Expanding Files, Installing Features, Installing Updates) but when it reboots to "Complete Installation" it quickly freezes. Unfortunately I cannot perform the second portion in safe mode and the previous system freeze causes me to have to start the install all over again.
Signs point to RAM being the issue right? Initially I had G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series DDR3-1600 (PC3-12800) 10-10-10-30*1.5v seated in the board (4x8GB). I've come to find out that this is most likely incompatible with this board. So I tried pulling some other DDR3-1600 RAM out of a working box and has the same result. Yesterday I went and purchased Crucial Ballistix Series DDR3-1600 (PC3-12800) 9-9-9-24*1.5v (2x4GB) that is listed on Crucial's site as supposedly working with the GD80. Along with it I grabbed a brand new SATA 3 drive just to make sure my old hdd wasn't the issue. As I mentioned above, the blue screens went away but now I'm always freezing and have not yet been able to successfully install an OS.
I have dropped down to using just a single stick but have not tried locating it in slot 2 instead of slot 1. I'm running a MemTest86 now but after 9 hours it's not found an issue. I figure it should have told me something by now if there was an issue with either the first memory slot or the stick itself.
I'm about to hand this off to a buddy to diagnose and hopefully get working as I've been failing for several days now. I'd like to make one final run at it though if people have any suggestions.  My build specs are below:
    MSI 990FXA-GD80 AM3+ AMD 990FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
    AMD FX-8150 Zambezi 3.6GHz Socket AM3+ 125W Eight-Core Desktop Processor
    Crucial Ballistix Series DDR3-1600 (PC3-12800) 9-9-9-24*1.5v (2x4GB)
    EVGA SuperClocked 01G-P3-1563-AR GeForce GTX 560 Ti (Fermi) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16
    Thermaltake TR2 RX 750W Bronze W0382RU ATX 12V v2.3 / EPS 12V v2.91 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Modular Power Supply
Barracuda Green 1.5TB 5,900RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive
LG 22x DVD±RW Super Multi Dual Layer Burner
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the replies.
I'm on the latest BIOS (v11.8) and have tried a total of three hard drives. The latest was the brand new SATA 3 drive I'm currently working with.
I've tried the hard drive and optical drive on several ports. Is there a particular reason you're wondering if the drive was on #1 and the dvd was on #5/6? I've also tried installing from USB and cutting the extra SATA connection completely out of the mix. I make it a bit further into the process via USB but still blue screen.
I do choose the 'format' option everytime I restart the install and sometimes I even delete/recreate the partition. The machine has never had any problem performing this task as it takes care of the 1.5 TB drive in the blink of an eye.
As of this morning I'm really starting to think there's something wrong with the board itself. At the suggestion of some peers I grabbed the latest Ubuntu 11.10 Live boot disk. The disk starts booting and listing my devices but was always hanging after finding my firewire. On a whim I disabled Firewire, eSATA, HD Audio, LAN and USB 3.0 through the BIOS. I left regular USB enabled for the keyboard and mouse and tried again. Now it hangs right after detecting the USB devices. I don't even have a hard drive hooked up in some test cases.
Think I should just RMA and try again?
