990fXA-GD80 trying to set up RAID...

I have and 990FXA-GD80 and am trying to setup up a RAID0 with two 240GB PNY SSDs plugged into SATA PORT 1&2. setup up SATA ports in the BIOS set to raid. I go into RAID setup with CNRTL-f but I doesn't give me an option to configure a raid. I have updated to the latest bios 13.5 and it still wont work. really need some help on this I build computers all the time just never messed with RAIDs before.
Specs:
MSI 990FXA-GD80
AMD FX6300
Corsair 16GB 4x4 @1600mhz
PSU Corsair RM650
no over clocks all stock

there should be 4 options in it!
1: View Drive Assignment
2: LD View/ LD Define Menu
3: Delete LD Menu
4: Controller Configuration
press 2 to enter LD menu
now press Ctrl+C
now chose the raid mode you want to use (raid 0,1,10 or 5)
now set stripe block (64KB is default for raid 0 or 10)
now set the 2 drives to Y in the assignment section
then press CTRL+Y to save and you will get some prompts and will show you some commands and it will make the array!
Please go here and download the Manual and read it please http://uk.msi.com/product/mb/990FXAGD80.html#/?div=Manual

  • Trying to set up RAID on GNBMAX-FISR

    Am building machine - P4 2.8Ghz, 2x512Mb Corsair CMX-512-2700C2 RAM, CD and CD/DVD.
Trying to set up RAID using the Promise built in RAID controller with EIDE drives.  According to the manual, you attach a single drive to the RAID connector (IDE3) and I assume the other drive to one of the other two IDE connectors, boot machine and do the CTRL+F to enter the RAID setup.  It only see's the one drive, never the second one.  I tried to install from scratch, using the "F6" option in the XP install to install RAID drivers, but didn't work.  I am going to try installing XP on both drives individually, then conect to the RAID and see if it was just a driver install issue.  Anyone out there set up a RAID n this board?  The only other RAID I set up was on a PCI card RAID controller.
    Thanks in advance!
     ?(

Thanks for the reply.  So if I am understanding you correctly, I HAVE to use the SATA connector(s) regardless of if I use the IDE3 for one of the drives?  Or like you say, just get the adaptors for both drives and run them on the SATA to get my RAID 1 array set up?
I have 2 WD800BB 80GB drives I want to set up for redundancy.

  • Problems Trying To Set Up Raid 0 On SATA (Plat SLI)

I booted up for the first time and tried to install the drivers for RAID as I installed Windows. After installing the drivers, Windows wanted me to pick one of the drives, and I figured I should have set up the RAID using the RAID setup on the motherboard. I restarted to try and do this and it just tells me 'error loading operating system' every time. It will let me install Windows if I want to, but I want to set up my two drives in RAID 0 first - is this trouble 'cos Windows plonked some data on the drives?
Pressing F4 or Ctrl + S is supposed to invoke the RAID setup utility but it doesn't work (I don't get a screen like the manual says I should for five seconds either). Whilst installing Windows, F3 for 'exit' didn't work, whilst Esc for 'cancel' did...
I've tried the reset CMOS button which didn't do anything useful either.
Edit; just noticed 'T' and backspace doesn't work either. Could/must be a big fat keyboard issue.

Sorry was on vacation last week.  Here is what you want to check.  In your Bios, (I think under Integrated Peripherals, but not 100% on that) There is an option for enaling or disabling the Silicon Raid controller, I recommend disabling it, especially if you want to use SATA II.  There is also an nVidiaRAID Config section, make sure that it is enabled and that the correct items are enabled underneath it.  The ones I have are:
    RAID ENABLE                       Enabled
    IDE Primary Master RAID        Disabled
    IDE Primary Slave   RAID        Disabled
    IDE Secondary Master RAID    Disabled
    IDE Secondary Slave RAID      Disabled
    SATA1 RAID                         Enabled
    SATA2 RAID                         Enabled
    SATA3 RAID                         Enabled
    SATA4 RAID                         Enabled
Under the IDE Function setup make sure SATA1/SATA2 and SATA3/SATA4 are  ENABLED
    as mentioned before:
    Onboard SiI3132 RAID         Disabled
Onboard SiI3132 Mode        RAID   (I have this set to raid although with the controller disabled I doubt it makes a difference)
now after you get the Raid setup to launch and configure the array, go back into bios and make sure the boot sequence shows the raid array at the top of the list, if you only have the 2 drives it should already be there.
after all of that, go back and install windows using the f6 to load BOTH drivers from thre floppy marked Nvidia Raid Drivers

  • 990FXA-GD80 Debug 19

    Hi guys
After a Phenom 2 x6 killed my MSI 790FX-GD70 and having no support from MSI at all about getting it fixed I vowed I would never use MSI again but I decided to give them the benefit of the doubt about the a 990FXA-GD80.
I set it up on air first just to check that all the components worked and nothing was D.O.A
    They are
    Athlon 2 x2 235e
    990FXA-GD80
    4Gb Muskin DDR3
Everything worked great and passed 5 quick runs of Linpack just to validate everything.
2 hours later I get a post code 19 which according to the forums is un-supported CPU, but the CPU worked fine a few hours before?
I'm stuck, is my board borked?
    Thanks in advance.
My BOARD is a review sample and has this printed on the BIOS sticker

    An help would be appreciated.

  • MSI 990FXA-GD80 (MS-7640) Raid issues

I'm trying to reinstall my windows 7 64 bit on my MSI 990FXA-GD80 (MS-7640) in raid mode. When I'm in the installer and try to add the raid drivers it lists my controller but then BSODs right after loading the driver and yes I used the driver from the MB CD not to mention a number of others. One thing I noticed is that the drivers I found didn't exactly match the option ROM version on my board (3.3.1540.14) closest I found was either .13 or .17. Also when I went into the raid setup and tried to make a JBOD it spit out an error message saying I needed to select two disks to do that operation????? I work with a lot of different raid adapters and I've not seen that one
So any ideas on this would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank You

  • Msi 990fxa-gd65 setting up raid 1 with os win7 x64 on ssd

Ok, I just built my first computer and am trying to set up win7 x64 on my 120g SSD while running two 2 TB wd hard drives in raid 1.  I have tried everything and am at wits end!  please help
i set up raid in the bios, then set up a LD with the two 2 TB hard drives however when I go to install win7 it says its missing a driver and wont proceed.

If the SSD is connected to a SATA-3 port you may need drivers to make Windows know about it.
Same for the RAID, but that one can be loaded after Windows is installed.

  • Problems with 990FXA-GD80 and AMD FX8350

    Hello,
I built this PC back in March, and ever since I have been having problems with it. I get BSOD every now and then. It usually only happens when I am playing a game or trying to render a video. The last time I tried running Prime95, my computer locked up and didn't report the error or go to bluescreen. I thought I might post my issues here, because I can't figure out the cause. I believe it's a piece of the hardware that is causing it.
I ran memtest86 with all passes, and I checked my HHD for errors and nothing came back.
I'm not sure if my BIOS version it out of date, but it says I am on V11.13. When I scan on Live Updater 5, there are no updates so I'm not sure if I need to just flash it or what.
My BIOS settings are all default, except I changed the CPU and DRAM voltages to higher values. 1.35V for the CPU and 1.65V for the DRAM. I seen it recommended in another thread so I figured I would give it a try. All my temps look fine by the way. I'm not sure if it has solved the issues though, I haven't tried playing much games or rendering a video.
If anyone might have an idea what is going on I would really appreciate any help. I don't know much about building PCs, so take it easy :P
    My full specs are:
    OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit
    CPU: AMD FX-8350
    Motherboard: 990FXA-GD80 V2
    GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD 7850
    Memory: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2133
PSU: CORSAIR HX Series HX750 750W
    HDD: Seagate SV35 Series ST1000VX000 1TB
I can post more info if needed, thanks!

    No replies?
First off that ram is 1.6V not 1.65V.  Your ram is ddr3 2133mhz which is an overclock ram speed.  Hopefully that works ok in "auto".
Next, your cpu is being starved for volts.  Set it to at least 1.4V.  Do not be afraid to go higher if it still crashes.
The bios is the latest for Win7.  I am using it and it works fine.
Do you have any monitoring software like HWiNFO64?  It shows my 8350 idling at 1435 mhz and using 1.32V-1.46V right now.  Under load it will be higher.  Yours will be too.

  • 990FXA-GD80 Hanging up

I have a MSI 990FXA-GD80 (see further specs below) that has been running great for awhile. Today it has started hanging up at post 99 for about 50 sec then will continue to boot up and run fine. I have tried switching memory, reseating all connections/cards with no difference. I also tried flashing the Bios and once again no change.  I was wondering if anyone has had a similar problem and might know what could be causing this hang-up. I have been running the RTM Windows 8 Pro for several months now with no problems so I doubt that is the problem. I'm suspecting some sort of hardware failure but have not been able to pinpoint it. The only change I have made recently is installing Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 which I uninstalled and still no change. Thank You in advance for any help.

    This consists of these items!
USB (main reason for these problems)
    PCI-E bus
    BIOS
    Front pannel headers
    serial connections
your going to have to find the problem by slowly disconnecting things! 1 &2 are the most common for causing this:
1: remove any USB devices connected to the board one by one to find what makes it hang! (most common is a USB device that isnt boot compliant)
2: pull the front pannel USB headers and see if it stops as you may have a hot wire on the USB lines thats fouling up the boot till it loads without initiating it after 50 seconds!
3: if the above 2 didnt find the problem take the board out the case and test it as a barebones on a non conductive surface to rule out a short!

  • MSI 990FXA-GD80 black screen

    Hello there
    Specs:
    What I had:
AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition
    GIGABYTE GA-880GA-UD3H
    XFX Radeon HD 6970 2GB GDDR5
    Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600MHz 16GB CL9
    Western Digital Caviar® Black 1TB
    2x Western Digital Caviar Green WD10EADS 1TB
    OCZ SSD Vertex 4 Series 2.5" 128GB
My computer suddenly crashed with a BSOD while surfing the web. When it restarted I got past the usual Gigabyte screen - followed by a black screen telling me "Beginning to update backup BIOS ---- Updating " then it restarted again, going into a loop with the same thing happening again and again.
So I figured that the motherboard had crashed, so I bought:
    MSI 990FXA-GD80
Thinking that would solve the problem.
I rebuild my computer today with the new motherboard, plugged everything and was ready to go-
The first message I got was telling me that my cpu or my ram was changed, and gave me the option to either 1- enter BIOS or 2- boot with default values.
I entered BIOS, checked that everything was OK, saved and rebooted... Got past the MSI-screen - followed by a black screen telling me "NTLDR is missing, press CTRL+ALT+DELETE to restart", which I did.
My comp then rebooted, but this time both my screens stayed black :O
I have now tried to restart my computer several times, but my screens stay black.
My monitors are plugged in with DVI and HDMI.
    Solutions I have tried:
Removing the motherboard battery. and starting without it.
changing to my old graphic card, ATI Radeon 5830.
Removing the power for 15 mins.
Unplugging all the hard drives, except the SSD. (which my OS is installed at).
I have now also ordered AMD FX-8150 8-Core Processor.

    Quote
"NTLDR is missing, press CTRL+ALT+DELETE to restart",
Did you use the ame HDD for boot without re-installing the OSD ?
This could be a case of having an AHCI mode OS HDD and your current board is still set to IDE ?
    That X4 955 only supports 1066 or 1333 memory.
Borrow the other PSU. Insert only one RAM module.
    Do a full CMOS clear.
Retest and do a fresh OS installation and all curent drivers.

  • MSI 990FXA-GD80 V2 BIOS Settings

I recently just put together my first new system. It consists of the MSI 990FXA-GD80 V2 board. Lots of reading to find that most of the "other" board owners of different brands, that start wiyh A, and G seem to rant and rave about how good their boards are, and how horrible MSI boards are. Through all of my reading though, there seems to be a whole lot more complaints about how this doesn't work, can't get it to do this, etc, etc, and not nearly as many as those with MSI boards. Thus, why I purchased it, and absolutely love it! I have an AMD 980 BE, Mushkin 1600 Ridgeback 1.5v @ 7-7-7-18-24, Mushkin Chronos Deluxe 240 gig SSD, Coolermaster V8 cooler, all in a Coolermaster 922 HAF case. Currently clocked at 4.1gigs, 24hr Prime stable. My question is if anyone knows, or has info on all the settings on voltages in this BIOS so that I can get a better understanding of what they all are and do,and where they should be set. I don't think I did to bad on my very first overclock, but Iwant more, for the bragging rights, you know. Any help would be appreciated.

Funny you say overclock.net I stumbled upon that site quite some time ago. Now I'm sticking my hands in places that they should not be in, just to find a few more pennies to put into my rig. I knew nothing about computers before I saw that site, and now I am on it almost every day just reading and learning. My first and only computer before this one that I have just built was an old Gateway that I literally resurected from the junk yard with the help of a friend, put a new hard drive and OS in, and had my very first computer. It was an Intel Pentium 1.5 ghz POS. As I said before, I still need a good graphics card to temporarily complete my build, and some more knowledge to tweak it out, then I will start with the bling. Overclock.net got me good!! I don't think I did too bad on my first ever overclock of 4.1, using just multi  and cpu and cpu/nb voltages, but there are a lot more than just those in the bios, like SB volt, CPU PLL volt, NB volt,HT Link volt, DDR Ref volt CPU DDR PHY volt, NB PCI-E volt, and DDR VTT volt. I am trying to get an understanding of what these do, and where a good setting for these is so I can tweak the sh** out of this thing without burnung up the board and processor. This is why I came to this forum to ask these questions, because it is an MSI owners forum. This is an awesome board, and I want to make it pi** all over the A and G boards with the same type of equiptment. I truly think it can, just need a little more knowledge to do it.
Since you're a beginner I think you should stick to the defaults with the voltages - you can probably bump up the multiplier safely a little bit without needing to touch the voltages. Unless you plan on doing water cooling or anything like that you really don't need to touch the voltages. Auto works fine. I had my Phenom X4 965 BE OC'd to 3.8Gz just by bumping up the multiplier and it was very stable. You don't want to fry your MB by setting the wrong voltages and its not something you really need to do as the gains aren't really there. (again unless you're doing active phase cooling or something hardcore like that) but thats really reserved for the true geeks like me. Not to mention I really doubt you'll even need to over clock at all unless you reallllllllly want to...
As for graphics cards, I have and LOVE my Evga GTX680... I have the 2GB but theres a 4gb model out now which can handle higher texture fill rates and resolutions... but its expensive $550 or so.... good luck!

  • Problem with msi 990fxa-gd80

Ok after a month of my new setup (8150fx,msi 990fxa-gd80 and kingston hyperx 1866 8gb) i tried to OC some the cpu . After all the settings are done and boot normally at windows i saw the core voltage was at stock 1.28v (using CPU-Z,core temp and amd overdrive) but before at bios i gave it 1,35v. Also i use a multi of x17.5 and fsb 233 but while checking from same programs (CPU-Z, core temp and amd overdrive) the multi goes at 16.5  If i use the amd overdrive i can set the cpu voltage and multi at 1.35 and x17.5 but only from there. Also the system temp at north bridge is a bit high 41 idle is that the correct temp ??? I am using the latest bios 11.10
Plz if anyone knows something about that or had the same problem plz tell me what should i do .

Is amd Cool n'quiet & c1e support disabled?
Also, when overclocking, I don't use amd overdrive (except for the vid card) or control center. Make all your bios changes in the bios.

  • 990FXA-GD80 FX-8350 BIOS 11.13 CPU Problems

    All,
Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.
I had an AMD FX-8150 installed on my MSI 990FXA-GD80 and updated to the latest bios: 11.13. This was no problem.
    Windows acted fine after reboot.
I do NOT Overclock the FX-8150 chip as I was not impressed with the performance potential of the FX-8150 when overclocked vs. stock settings. As such I left ALL BIOS settings at their stock settings with the exception of SATA MODE = AHCI.
However I do check stability of the stock settings with Prime95 and OCCT. Ran both for 60 minutes. And there were no issues.
I then reset bios to default status and then powered off my PC. Removed the AMD FX-8150 and installed an AMD FX-8350 (Vishera).
Powered on, clicked F1 to enter settings. restored defaults. Set SATA Mode = AHCI then saved and exited.
Windows booted just fine. However, ANY stress testing whether via: Prime95, OCCT or AMD overdrive fails with in 90 seconds.
The OS does NOT BSOD, however Prime95 recognized an error and stops as does OCCT and/or AMD overdrive. Temps do NOT get higher then 40 degrees Celsius in this short period of time.
I am NOT altering ANY bios setting: No frequency changes, No voltage changes. ALL default settings are intact.
I did use the jumper to clear CMOS, got into the BIOS, restored to default, set SATA MODE = AHCI, saved and exited. Reset the date and time. Rebooted, re-attempted the 3 above mentioned stress test software suites and all threes reported errors and stopped.
Is anyone else experiencing similar issues with this board with BIOS 11.13 using an FX-8350?
I've ran MemTest on the memory and this passes successfully.
I have another MSI board: 990FXA-GD80V2. I have the old FX-8150 in it right now. I just did a fresh install of Win 7 Ultimate 64-Bit, installed ALL windows updates and I will now update to the latest BIOS for it via Live Update 5.
Then swap CPUs and report my results.
Any and all help you can give will be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

    Thanks for your reply.
I have tested a number of different PSUs with both the 990FXA-GD80V2 and 990FXA-GD80 and the FX-8350:
    Corsair 1200AX
    OCZ ZX Series 1250W
    Rosewill Capstone 750W
    Corsair CX 600
The result is the same for any and ALL of the above PSUs. So I am convinced, that this issue is NOT PSU related. That is not to say that a faulty PSU could not cause similar issues.
I also agree that it is not a Thermal issue. With ALL default setting set in the BIOS, Prime95, OCCT, etc. ALL error our within the first 90 seconds and on my systems while using the following Heatsink/fan/Close-loop Liquid cooling solutions temperatures NEVER exceed 50 C before errors occurr:
    Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo
    Corsair H100
    Zalman CNPS11X
    ThermalRight Silver Arrow
I've tried the following memory options:
    G.Skill F3-2133C9D-8GAB
    G.Skill F3-17000CL9D-8GBXM
    Muskin 997008
    Muskin 997007
    Muskin 996997
    Muskin 996996
    Patriod PV38G160C9K
    All pass memtest86+
I have tried leaving the Memory settings set at default.
I've manually entered the timings and frequecy. (The highest bootstrap on this board is 1866, so If the memory was rated higher than 1866, 1866 was selected and the default clock frequecy of 200 was NOT changed. So for testing purposes 1866 was the highest possible setting).
Again ALL memory sticks pass memtest86+ on both 990FXA-GD80 and 990FXA-GD80V2
I've tried 3 separate FX-8350 CPUs on both motherboards. ALL combinations exibit the same symptons. That being under default settings, Prime95, OCCT, ect. fail.
I am convinced it is a voltage issue. I do not think the MSI 990FXA-GD80 and/or MSI 990FXA-GD80V2 with BIOS v. 11.13 ramps up the voltage fast enough when the CPU is stressed.
This opinion is speculative. But I think it is grounded in fact.
On these two motherboards ALL three FX-8350 become stable by changing CPU Voltage = AUTO to CPU Voltage = 1.365000
Anything less then this will produce an error in Prime95, OCCT, etc. with 15 minutes regardless of which of the above cooling solutions are used.
Any and all feed back will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

another weird problem which wasnt fixed by flashing to the last bios:
all is running fine with bios set on "default settings", sli is detected and the gfx's work with sli actived or disabled
i had no problems to OC my actual cpu on other boards (870A Fuzion & NF980-G65: 4ghz;CPUv:1.428; CPU.NB:2600; CPU.NBv:1.255)
i tryed to oc the [email protected]  (greenpower disabled, turbo disabled) 200x18; when windows open my 1920x1080 resolution have gone for 800x600; the nvidia MSI GTX285 are no more detected, the nvidia control panel is gone and it seem that the mobo have switch to the integrated chipset.
the same happen if i try to use the oc genie button
all goes back to normal if i reboot and reset the bios to default settings...without oc
did i miss a new option to desactivate to get the oc working or is it a sort of problem between the nvidia GFXs and OCing the CPU? looks really weird

  • 990FXA-GD80, half the memory missing

I recently switched from a P67A-GD45 based system to an ASRock 970 Extreme4/FX-8350 setup.  Of course, not surprisingly, the ASRock board was a complete lemon, and I went down to my local shop and picked up a 990FXA-GD80.  Honestly, the only reason I chose it over other 990FX boards is because it had coaxial digital audio.
It seems to have fixed all my problems, aside from one.  I noticed Windows was reporting "16.0 Gb memory, 7.98 usable".  There's about 8Gb listed in Resource Monitor as "Hardware Reserved".
I'm used to "Hardware Reserved" being things like "512Mb for the integrated video on a APU setuo", or "A little RAM for a memory mapped peripheral."  8Gb seems a little much
Now, I can tell this allocation takes place as soon as "whoever is doing the initial memory mapping at power-on" because I note Windows 7 says this, NetBSD only reports 8Gb available, and  the bootable RAM test utilities only try to test about 8000Mb.
If it were bad memory causing the board to fail a test and set "top of memory" at 8Gb, wouldn't it be so polite as to throw an error message?
    What I brought over:
    * The FX-8350 CPU
    * A 16Gb, four-stick kit of Corsair DDR3-1600, CMZ16GX3N4A1600C9
    * A 2Gb GTX660
    * A Hauppauge HVR-1250 TV tuner
I tried removing sticks one at a time to check for a bad one-- removing one stick would never get you to a 12Gb configuration, like you'd expect.  Removing stick 3 -  resulted in a 4Gb configuration.
It's like something has decided "I'm gonna map myself all over the second bank of memory, in slots two and four, so NOTHING can ever see it."
Also, already on BIOS 13.5B2, so don't suggest that.
Suggestion for MSI marketing:  this "v2" thing sort of sucked.  I spent a great deal of time in the shop trying to figure out specs and compatibility and landing on the "v1" page not knowing it's the same basic product.  Why not-- as a matter of practice-- put the firmware version installed on the box label with the barcode and serial number instead?

I had the same issue once, when I tried to set ram to 1866 in the bios.   1333 and 1600 never did have that issue for me.  If I used FSB overclocking and got to 1866 with bios set at 1600 or 1333 I didn't have that problem.  But those are the only instances that occurred.  For now I run at 1600 and have all 16gb.
The FX only support 2 Pieces of RAM with 1866MHz, you use 4x4GB and now only 1600MHz is possible!
