9i and 10g Installation

Have oracle 9ir2 installed first and I then installed 10g, but 10g DB can't start. Installation was succeessful. When I try to open the database I get the following errors
Listener refused the connection with the following error: ORA-12500, TNS:listener failed to start a dedicated server process The Connection descriptor used by the client was: (DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS_LIST=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=chiana.kymp.net)(PORT=1521)))(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVICE_NAME=chiana)))
Can someone tell me how to workaround this problem.

Did the 10g database register with the listener? The fact that the error message says that no handler was found indicates to me that the client was able to connect to the listener. It might be that the listener is running but that the database can't register with it.
See what services are running by running:
lsnrctl service
I expect that you will see that the 9i database has registered a handler, but that your 10g service either will not be there or there will not be a handler for it.
It might be that you need to run the 10g version of the listener. I would expect it to be backward compatible with the 9i database. I think you are running a 9i listener and 10g db doesn't play nice with it -- I don't know that though.
You could either make 10g your default listener, or set it up to run on a different port. But then you have the additional work of doing that and pointing the instances to it and such.

  • HELP! I cannot figure this out, differences between 9i and 10g installation

This is for class, and my instructor who obviously has a bad sense of humor has provided me with the following "good" link to get these answers:
    http://www.stanford.edu/dept/itss/docs/oracle/10g/nav/portal_1.htm
Within the comparison document you create, include key differences such as, but not limited to:
Any pre-configuration of the Operating System.
Memory configuration consideration (both physical and logical).
Naming conventions of the Global Database or System Identifier (SID).
Online input screens within the Oracle Installer.
Processes that run during the installation (i.e. port assignments, directories defined, etc.).
    Password configurations or assignments.
Web Services created (is there one?).
Any post-configuration of the Operating Ssystem.

The current Oracle installation docs can be found at:
    http://docs.oracle.com.
Use Oracle's docs and if you instructor has any questions tell him or her to contact me at the University of Washington.
I spent a lot of time on the Stanford campus ... lots of great resources ... but Oracle docs should be found at ...oracle.com.

Now I am trying to run the Net config assistant outside of the installer and configure a 10g listener for the 10g instance using a port different from the 1521 that teh 9i listener is using and it keeps telling me that:
The information provided for this listener is currently in use by other software on this computer. You can proceed with the configuration as is but it will not be possible to start the listener until the conflict is resolved...
I have tried several different ports (the only thing that could be in conflict, I think) and I keep getting the same message..
    HELP!!
Has anyone out there set up a 9i and 10g installation on Windows using two different listeners, one for the 9i and another for 10g?

Yes, I have read this other thread you have cited but there is no conclusion - other than maybe by rerunning the install he overcame the issue and never completed the thread. In my case, the initial 10g install failed to run the net config assistant and there never was a 10g listener service created. Also, now I try to run the net config assistant stand alone and it refuses to create a listener service...claims that there is a conflict, even if I try on other than the default port.
I'm thinking the conflict lies with the fact there is an up and running 9i listener service and yes that listener is active because it is servicing a live production instance.
Our goal was to install a 10g instance with it's own separate listener, import our schemas and test our app on a 10g database then one day turn the 10g into the production instance.
Our plan was to avoid endangering the production environment by even trying to service the 9i database with the 10g listener. You cannot use a 9i listener for a 10g database but from what I read in the other thread you have cited, to try to fire up the 10g listener to service the 9i production instance would have resulted in a loss of servicve to the production environment if I experience the same phenomena as the fellow in the other thread.
Thank you for your time and consideration here...
I believe I should propose to have a separate server box set up to host this new 10g database. Our overall objective is to keep the production system up and running no matter what.
In the old days I remember that if too many attempts were made at installing on a Windows platform the registry would get hosed up beyond repair and the only out was to re-image the box and start over with a fresh copy of teh Windows operating system:-)
Let me know if you have any further suggestions...
    Regards-
    Jim

  • Oracle 10G installation problem, and errors on SOLARIS 10 x86

    HI.
I installed the last version of oracle 10g on a x86 SOLARIS 10 system.
When the installer arrived at Configuration assistants, the window is stopping, and I can't see forward. But when I look at the installAction.log, the installation is checked as OK (?).
When I launch sqlplus, and startup inside, it is said the ora-00205 error (problem with control files), and in the end, I'm really suprised there's no the database I told the installer to create at the beginning. But should I be surprised? As I didn't see really the end of the installation, and the installer didn't propose me the PATH where to install the DB, well, I guess there's something wrong.
Could anybody tell me how to solve these problems, please?
    Thank you :)

    Two options:
    1. Create database using DBCA - execute $ORACLE_HOME/bin/dbca
    2. Create database manually (without DBCA)

    dear fredrik
I tried to install it according to the installation guid on http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/10g/OracleAS10gInstallationOnRedHatAS3.php as you see it asked for installation of a patch.
and yes I tried to install it without installing this patch and I got an error saying that I am missing a file named ld.so in /etc.I thought it might be connected to that patch.
beside when I was looking for the solution to my problem I saw many people having the same problem and asking the exact same question.

  • Active ODP when both 9 and 10g are installed...

I have both ODP 9i and ODP 10g (along with the Oracle 10g client) installed on my workstation. How does one set up one or the other to be the 'active' ODP client? For instance, I have an application that I developed under ODP 9i... because I developed this under ODP 9, I want it to run under ODP 9 on my or anyone else's workstation. However, when I view it in the Visual Studio 2003 IDE, it shows ODP 10 as the 'active' client. Even when I run it, I find it is using ODP 10 (I know this because I have a Help...About screen in my runtime that displays the loaded assemblies) Even if I install it on a plain workstation (i.e. no Visual Studio 2003) with both 9i and 10g installed, and even though it was fully compiled using 9i, it still shows up as using the 10g ODP client. I don't want that at this time - if I compile it under 9i I want it to use Oracle 9i... Otherwise, what is the sense of having both clients on the machine?
So.... bottom line... is there a way to set one of the ODP clients to be 'active' even though both clients are installed?
    Thanks in advance.
    Tom

    Hi,
By default, ODP installs publisher policy files to redirect to the latest version of ODP, which would make an app compiled with 92x odp use the 10x odp instead. If you dont want that to happen, delete the oracle.dataaccess publisher policy files from the GAC, but then you'll get no redirection at all. IE, you'll have to have the exact version the app was compiled with on that box to run the app.
Or, as msolnit pointed you to above, there's an article on the MS site that explains more about it, and other ways to prevent it on a per-application basis (see the Bypassing Publisher Policy section of that article)
    Cheers, hope it helps.

  • Oracle 10g installation on Windows 7

I am currently using Oracle 10g on my laptop running on Windows Vista. Now i am planning to upgrade my OS to Windows 7. My question here, is can I use the same Oracle 10g installable to install in windows 7 also ??
    is it possible ??
    thanks,
    JJ

    Possible yes? Brilliant no!
Windows 7 is totally uncertified and unsupported with all Oracle products and if you have an issue there is essentially no support or patch available.
Personally I think Vista a cruel joke so my recommendation would be to go to XP SP3 which at least has the attribute of stability or move to Linux which is what I did on one of my laptops.

  • Oracle 9i and 10G in same Fedora Core 4 machine

    Hi Friends,
    I am intalling Oracle 9i(9.2.0.4.0) and 10G(10.2.0.1.0) on a Fedora Core4 machine.
I alredy installed Oracle 10G under,
    USER : oracle
    # useradd -u 1001 -g oinstall -G dba -d /oraeng/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1 -m oracle
    # chown -R oracle:oinstall oracle /oraeng
    # chown -R oracle:dba oracle /disk1 ( disk1 for databases)
    .bash_profile
    ===========
    ORACLE_BASE : /oraeng/app/oracle
    ORACLE_HOME : /oraeng/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1
    PATH : $ORACLE_HOME/bin:$PATH:.
How to install Oracle 9i in the same machine?
    Regards
    Mathew

    Hi,
Do I have to create a seperate user (eg: oracleuser) for installing oracle 9i database software?
So at that time, by using
    #usradd -u 1002 -g oinstall -G dba -d /oraeng/app/oracle/product/9/2/0 -m oracleuser
    #chown -R oracleuser:oinstall /oraeng
I think the second command will change the ownership of the /oraeng direcory from 'oracle' user to 'oracleuser' user. 'oracle' user is created erlier for 10G installation

  • SUNWsprox package with solaris 10 for Oracle 10g Installation....

    Hi
I am in problem with a Solaris 10 package "SUNWsprox - Sun workshop Bundled 64-bit make library" for Oracle 10g Installation. I checked the CDs (In the /.../products) but did't found this packege. Can any one tell me please can I go without this package or where I found this package...Please Its very URGENT for me....
    Thanks
    Mohammed Tanvir

    Hi...
I had the same issue, but found out that the SUNWsprox was replaced by SUNWsprot. The OUI 10.1 Release 2 will 'pass' as the doco in the Oracle quick install guide is wrong (as well as 10g Application Server).
The only way to lay a 10g Release database on Solaris 10 is to lay the software doen only, then cd in the .../bin directory, step your Rdbms ORACLE_HOME, ORACLE_SID, LD_LIBRARY_PATH and of course the DISPLAY (is X-windowing into the server), and run dbca manually. Oracle 10g is a bit buggy.

Does anyone know what might be causing this? I have been having a hard time getting anything from Oracle installed on this Itanium machine and am wondering if Oracle really supports it.

  • 9i and 10g migration/interoperability

Does anyone have any experience migration 9i Lite to 10g Lite?
    Particularly:
Can 9i clients sync with a 10g server?
Can a 9i Mobile Server and a 10g Mobile Server both be running replication on the same sets of tables in the enterprise db?
    Thanks for any insights!

Hi ppl, in my work we where doing a migration from 9i Lite to 10g not only the lite, mobile server too, the only don't change was the enterprise server ( remains 9i )
We found some problems with the migration ( althougt isn't a real migration because we don't make a exportation of database 9i and importation after in 10g ).
Thats because we don't find how. ( or be don't exist )
I describe you the problems we find and incompatibilities we suffer to make your migration a little sweet.
9i clients can't sync with a 10g mobile server. odbc, msync.exe and other files are different in this two versions of lite and mobile server, well in a few words they are different versions and incompatible both.
9i mobile server and 10g mobile server can running replication on the same set of tables in the enterprise bd?, yes they can but we do it in different fisical machines ( the mobile servers i refer ), i don't known if they can co-exists in the same machine.
    --Another question : The migration..
Isn't well called a migration because you can't do it a migration with import/export tools because there isn't, its so simple.
We need to do a reconstruction of the same was do it in the past with the 9i mobile server ( create the project, publications and publish the applications ), users and groups for the mb server.
take a look at que question i introduce
Exportation / Importation of Mobile Database Workbench information
No one replies me already, then y suppose there isn't a way to automatize the mobile server implementation.
    --Another things we suffer
Don't install 9i Lite and 10g Lite in the same client , we have problems and need to deinstall all and install 10g alone.
ODBC supplied with 10g Lite installation are not configurable, you can't modify a simple option in the control panel > Administrative Tools > ODBC Origins , i suppose oracle do it for automatize the implementation of lite .
Install 10g being the user who needs the Lite because the ODBC only CAN exists in this user and you CAN'T create an ODBC connection manually to 10g ( YES THIS IS TOO BAD but its true ).
I don't known what more to tell u now, they where the most interesting two weeks in my life involved with ORACLE.
    And , good luck!
    Joan
