9i - install without reboot

Hi,
Is it possible to install XDB without a server reboot? I would like to install the latest Application Express, however getting signoff for a server reboot will be large task.
Regards,
Matthew Watson.

You have to be a little bit more specific.
Oracle XMLDB is only supported on 9.2.0.3 and upwards as stated in the header on the main page of this forum.
A locally installed APEX based on the Protocol Server (aka Listener) can only be done from 10.2.0.3 and upwards.
I don't know the first supported database version while using apex, apache, mod_sql and the dbms_eqg. You should ask that question on the OTN apex forum
If you want, I could lead you to an post of an apex install on 10.2.0.3 version...

  • How to do a clean install without loosing anything

    Hi all,
I (foolishly) installed Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard as an update to my existing 10.5.8 Leopard install last year. Ever since I've had a host of small but annoying problems, that no one else seems to be complaining about. (For example in the finder half the time when I right click on a file the pop-up menu disappears after half a second and I have to click and hold to keep it open so I can make a selection.)
I'm starting to wonder if some of the problems I'm having are caused by the upgrade install, instead of a fresh install.
So I'd like to do a clean install of the OS, but it's been so long since I've done that I've forgotten how that works. How can I do a clean install without loosing all my data? Do I have to pull all my data off the hard drive, wipe it clean and start from scratch like you do on a PC, or is there an easier way? (I hope there is an easier way.) If someone could point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it.

I'm starting to wonder if some of the problems I'm having are caused by the upgrade install, instead of a fresh install.
I did an upgrade install on my old MacBook Pro, and it worked just fine. The key is that the system has to be in good working order when the update is applied... if there are minor problems, those problems can be magnified by an upgrade.
Of course, this may not be your problem... have you checked all your software and hardware for compatibility with Snow Leopard? One site that you can use, though it's by no means comprehensive, is:
    http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/
So I'd like to do a clean install of the OS, but it's been so long since I've done that I've forgotten how that works. How can I do a clean install without loosing all my data?
Unfortunately, there's no easy way to do a true clean reinstall. In a nutshell, here's what you need to do:
    1) Back up all your data. Make sure you've got application serial numbers stored somewhere!
    2) Now back up all your data in another place. If you don't have two copies, you won't have any backups after the next step... the backup from step 1 becomes the original, and a poorly-timed drive failure would ruin you.
    3) Reboot from the Mac OS X install disk (SL disk in this case)
    4) Erase the hard drive with Disk Utility
    5) Install the system
    6) Update everything to the current version via Software Update
    7) Install any apps you need
    8) Update those apps if necessary
    9) Reconfigure anything that needs it (network settings, appearance preferences, etc)
    10) Copy +only documents+, no settings files, from your backup, preferably manually rather than with Migration Assistant (which can sometimes copy more than you might want it to).
That's about it! For assistance with any of those items, just say the word.

  • Looking to run windows on my MBPro through Bootcamp or Parallels, but would like to use a downloaded Windows 7, is it possible to install without the Windows Disc?

Looking to run windows on my MBPro through Bootcamp or Parallels, but would like to use a downloaded Windows 7, is it possible to install without the Windows Disc?
Need to set up a workstation on my MBPro that will only run on Windows. Im willing to use Bootcamp or Parallels to see what works best. Need to get this set up this week to enable working from home on my MB - rural and hoping to buy Windows 7 online - am I able to get windows working through either bootcamp or Parallels without the actual Windows disc? Bootcamp set up guide calls for a disc.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
First, the answer to your question is yes, it IS possible to install Windows in Parallels without a disc, using an .iso image file.
Boot Camp since OS X 10.8 also installs Windows without a disc: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4889551?tstart=0
Parallels has complete documentation, series of forums, and a knowledgebase. You can also download the current release of Parallels 9 and try it for free for a few weeks before you decide to purchase it.
The Parallels Desktop for Mac product page: http://www.parallels.com/products/desktop/
The Desktop for Mac forums: http://forum.parallels.com/forumdisplay.php?58-Parallels-Desktop-for-Mac
    Documentation: http://www.parallels.com/support/desktop-virtualization/desktop/#c12970
The Knowledgebase for Desktop for Mac: http://kb.parallels.com
The primary difference between a Boot Camp installation and a Parallels installation is that in the Boot Camp installation, you're installing Windows into a separate partition on your internal mass storage device (hard drive or SSD) and then rebooting your Mac directly into Windows.
In Parallels, you're always running OS X on the Mac and Parallels is running a Windows virtual machine.
Not to get too technical here, but it is also possible for Parallels to run an installed Windows Boot Camp partition as a virtual machine. If you're evaluating system performance with a trial copy, that might be the way to go, because you only have to install Windows once on Boot Camp as a dual-boot system, then install Parallels Desktop and run the Boot Camp partition as the virtual machine.
There is a performance difference between the two, with the Boot Camp Windows installation being faster, but without the convenience of running both Mac and Windows applications simultaneously offered by Parallels. Sometimes that convenience outweighs a performance hit.
I can't give you more Mavericks and Parallels 9 specifics, because I'm currently running Windows 7 with Parallels 7 on OS X 10.8.5. Parallels 7 will not run on OS X 10.9 Mavericks.
I've been using Parallels (to run a few old rarely-used WIndows applications with features that would require a steep learning curve and major expense to purchase and learn a similar Mac app) occasionally since Parallels 3 and Windows XP. With each new release of OS X, each new release of Parallels, and each new Windows release, there are ALWAYS 'early adopter' bugs that get worked out over time.

  • Is it possible to do DST patch without reboot on Solaris 9

Hi - I have some machines that are difficult to schedule downtime on, and am
wondering if I can manually stop/start processes that are affected by
113225-08 and 112874-33 patches so that I could apply them without rebooting.
    Is this possible?
Thanks very much for the help,
    Judy

The reboot ensures that all processes are restarted.
Any processes that are started before the timezone patch is installed will not see the update.
So if nothing else, I'd want to restart cron...

  • Updates Install without user intervention

    Hi All,
I am currently using WSUS and GPO's to push updates to our Windows 2008 R2 Servers.  We just began doing this within the last couple of months and have created the GPO to "auto download updates and notify for install".  The only other
relevant setting is "reschedule Automatic updates scheduled installations" is set to 15 minutes.  Based on our setting of "notify for install", I would not expect this setting to have any effect.
Now twice in the last week, individual server administrators have been working on their servers, rebooted for whatever reason and then they report to me that Windows Updates are installing without their approval.  Anyone have any ideas how this could
    happen?
    Thanks

"I'm absolutely sure they didn't either. That's my exact point. The user does not "initiate" an installation of downloaded updates when the system is shutdown/restarted from the Start Menu -- it happens automatically since Windows 7 SP1."
If this is the case it explains what's happening and I have to stop this.  What settings then can I use to install the approved updates only if the sys admin initiates it?
There are two ways to approach this:
Configure the WUA to "Notify for Download" (AUOption='2'). As a result, the sysadmin will need to perform two tasks: [1] Download the updates (at which time the Install Updates and Shutdown consideration is in effect, and then [2] Install the updates when
desired. This implies planning in advance to allow for the download time, and then planning for the installation event.
Use the Command Prompt to reboot the server: SHUTDOWN /R /T which will completely avoid the installation of any updates already downloaded.
Personally I would offer this argument for consideration: Why is a sysadmin rebooting a server without consideration for the fact that updates might be pending installation? Most organizations I know
only restart servers as a function of installing updates, usually during scheduled maintenance windows. Any other activities that require a system restart are deferred until that scheduled maintenance window.
A corollary to this is also: Why is a sysadmin unfamiliar with patch state of the system they're responsible for?

  • Photoshop Elements 8 Without Reboot?

    Hi,
I am trying to create a Virtual Photoshop Elements package with AppV.  When running the AppV sequencer, I am unable to reboot the computer.  It seems that Photoshop Elements 8 Editor requires a reboot to run.  Without reboot I am getting the following error:
Licensing for the product has stopped working.
This product has encountered a problem which requires you restart you computer before it can be launched.
    Blah blah blah
    Error : 147:21
Is there any way at all I can get around this without a reboot?
    Thanks
    Rosy#55

That helped a lot, thanks!  I now know that the issue is with the FLEXnet License service needing a reboot and not running while sequencing.  I now have a workaround (which violates all best practice of sequencing, but it seems to work) to allow me to sequence it, but now have a new question.
I found that if I install, then uninstall Photoshop BEFORE sequencing, I can perform the required reboot to allow the FLEXnet License Service to run.  Once it is running, I can the successfully sequence the virtual application without error.....a very dirty way of doing it, but it seems to be the only way at this point.
Now for the next question, is there a way to install the FLEXnet License without installing the entire Photoshop application?  The reason I need this is because the error comes back when I deploy the virtual copy of Photoshop to a computer with no FLEXnet License service running.  So, if there was a way to install this service on computers, either by pushing it out or even installing it into my images that would be great.
    Thanks

  • How to restart VSS writers without rebooting

    Hello fellow teckies.
I'm having this problem when backing up with Symantec Backup Exec 11d where it generates errors about not being able to backup VSS sections on the C drive.
    I've already posted with Symantec.
    https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/vss-c-drive-errors-when-backing-server
They're saying to re-register and restart the services.  My question is, can the services be restarted without rebooting?
Unfortunately rebooting is not an option as this is a critical production server.
If anyone can answer, please let me know.
    Thanks :)

What Santhosh mentioned is on the right direction. To restart a VSS writer, you need to restart the services or process that hosts the writer. Generally speaking, we will
take the following steps when encountering VSS writer related issues:
Retry the backup or restore operation that caused the error condition.
If this does not resolve the issue, restart the service or process that hosts the writer, and retry the operation.
If this does not resolve the issue, open Event Viewer as described in the "Open Event Viewer and view events related to VSS" section and look for events related to the
service or process that hosts the writer. If necessary, restart the service or process, and retry the operation.
If this does not resolve the issue, restart the computer, and retry the operation.
If restarting the computer does not resolve the issue, provide the Event Viewer information to the vendor whose application is indicated in the event text.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee264212(WS.10).aspx
As for the impact of the restart, it generally will not cause bad effect. However, it depends on the service which is restarted. Generally speaking, a service should handle
all the related task, such as writing all data in memory into disk and committing the transaction, etc, when a properly restart operation is performed. If there are any particular requirement or order to follow to restart a service or application, you should
    follow the recommended restart procedure.
Meanwhile, it is reported that when performing Shadow Copy Components backups with the File Server Resource Manager (FSRM) installed you may encounter this issue. Please
refer to the following Symantec article:

  • Disable or quiet UAC without reboot from command line

I need to be able Disable or quiet UAC without reboot from command line without user confirmation as local system
We use LANDesk and I want to add a part of the script to install turning off or quieting UAC, run install and them turn UAC on
Not all users are Admins so I can run as current logged on user but if admin rights are not need I can run a pre install task as local user run the
install task then run a post install task to turn it on
It doesn’t have to be a command line it can be an app Ii position on each machine then call if it can run silently

    Hi,
Thanks for posting in Microsoft TechNet forums.
To disable UAC, you can take either of the following methods:
    1.
If you use Group Policy to manage UAC, you can edit the local security policy to control this:
    1)
From the Start search bar, type "Local Security Policy"
    2)
    Accept the elevation prompt
    3)
From the snap-in, select Security Settings -> Local Policy -> Security Options
    4)
Scroll down to the bottom, where you'll find nine different group policy settings for granular configuration of UAC.
    2.
Use the following script to elevate the privilege in Windows Vista.
    Scripting Elevation on Vista
    3.
You can also modify the registry through the following command line:
    REG ADD HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v EnableLUA /t REG_DWORD /d 0x0 /f
    Important caution:
please backup your registry before modifying it, any incorrect modification can cause a unrecoverable damage.

  • Newbie: how to assign master switch without rebooting?

    Hi,
Sometime ago, we installed 2 x 3750 switches connected by stackwise cable. I followed the instruction to boot up Switch A first and after 20 seconds Switch B.
Then I configured an IP address to the stack.
Then one day, there was a prolonged power outage. When power finally came back up, Switch B became the master instead of Switch A.
Is there a way to assign Switch A to be the Master without rebooting them again?

    Hello John,
the stack master cannot be preempted, that is, once the stack master is elected, a new master election can only be forced by resetting/reloading the current master.

No. The WLC needs to be rebooted in order for the new certificate to be applied. There is not other way around this.

It will make it easier to help you w/ your problem to know the  size and RAM installed.

What OS will your Garmin work with? Funny there was someone else that did that and upgraded to Yosemite and regretted it.
I'd say Lion if your Garmin is compatible.
Both Lion and Mountain Lion are downloadable from the Apple Store:

Do you have access to another Mac with a disk drive?  If so you can do it in one of two ways:
1 - on the Mac with the optical drive launch Disk Utility and make a disk image of the iLife 11 disk. Connect the two Macs together and transfer the disk image to your MacBook Air.  Mount the disk image and install from it.  I have my iLife disks saved that way for quick and easy reinstall when necessary.
2 - connect the two Mac together so you can access the MBA from the Mac with the disk drive. Insert the iLife disk, and install from the second Mac to the MBA.

Need to know your Mac model. If it's a PowerPC, the max OS is Leopard 10.5.x. If it's an Intel procesor, you can upgrade to Snow Leopard (for $29) & later to Lion.
