Can 9iAS release 2 installed on Win NT 4.0 SP6a connect with an Oracle 7.3.4 instance in AIX?

I believe I'm having a similar problem, and the original question probably should have been posted in one of the Database-forums.
I suspect (actually hope) the original question was a generel connection problem while the answer refered to the possibility of storing the Application Server's internal data in a version 7 database.
My version of the problem is:
I have installed Oracle 9iAS release 1 on Windows (client parts only). The client tools (SQL*Plus, Forms compiler etc.) connects fine to a HP-UX 7.3.4.5 database.
I have installed Oracle 9iAS release 2 on Windows (client parts only). Most client tools fail to connect to the 7.3.4.5 database on the HP-UX, but still connects fine to an 8.1.5 instance on the same machine. E. g. SQL*Plus ends with a program error. Some tools like TOAD connects fine but fails when SQL-statements are above approx 1,5 kilobyte in length.
I have installed Oracle 9i release 2 (database - not AS) on Linux with the purpose to test if upgrading the HP-UX 7.3.4.5 database cause me any problems. But the client tools can't connect to the HP-UX 7.3.4.5 database. Neither will a database link work.
I have installed Oracle9iAS release 2 (here it is AS) infrastructure including a metadata database (that is a 9.0.2 database ~ release 1 for databases) and the tools here connect fine, and so does the database link.
Tracing the network traffic in SQLNET it appears a false BREAK, causing an ORA-03113-reply, is sent to (?) the server, but that can be caused by many things I guess.
To me it looks like the original question is about a problem with the SQL*Net client in Oracle 9i release 2 DATABASE - at least it's where I have my problem - and I hope it has never been the intention that connections from an Oracle 9i release 2 client to an Oracle 7.3.4.5 server should not work.

Not yet, but the Windows CE app isn't supposed to run on a mobile device. I'm using Win CE as RTOS. Therefore I need a light, high performance connection to the Oracle DB. I don't like the idea of middleware between the RTOS and the DB.
Isn't there a way to connect to Oracle with a good performance?

Win XP can't connect via SMB to Leopard

Unanswered question from several weeks ago. Time to cast the line in again...
I upgraded from 10.3.9 to 10.5, and now the PC is unable to connect to the Mac via SMB for file sharing. I can see it in the Network Neighborhood, or specify the share (\\leopard1\useracct) explicitly. It doesn't go as far as authentication; just hangs until timeout. I still have a Panther machine too, and PC connecting to Panther works just like before. I can connect
++ Panther to Leopard, Leopard to Panther,
++ PC to Panther, Panther to PC, and even
++ Leopard to PC,
but not PC to Leopard.
I've tried adjusting the workgroup, but it doesn't stick when I do. (See below for update.)
I can walk over to the Mac and connect to the Win XP machine to transfer files. I cannot sit at the Win XP machine and connect to Leopard to transfer files.
I've read the manuals over and over. I enabled SMB under System Preferences -> Sharing -> Options, and I've tried two different accounts, one of which is admin. I'm very tenacious and I know my way around both computers, but I've really tried everything three times and I'm out of ideas. It's definitely not working the way the manuals say; in fact, if my Leopard machine would just read the manuals, it'd be working by now.

Error installing 9iAS on Win NT/2000

I downloaded Oracle 9iAS for Win NT from the web site http://otn.oracle.com/software/products/ias/software_index.htm. When I try to unzip the files using winzip 8.0, I get the following error - "Cannot open file. It does not appear to be a valid archive. Try downloading again". I tried downloading a couple of times. I am getting the same error.
I believe these files should be compatible with win2000. I would appreciate if anyone could help me with the installation, or help find a downloadable 9iAS compatible with win 2000.

OraOLEDB.Oracle on x64 Win 2003 connect to Oracle 9.2 from SQL 2005 x64

I know this is an Oracle board but some of you may also support SQL Server like I do and I am hoping someone has had the pleasure of using OraOLEDB.Oracle on 64 bit.
I have a 64 bit SQL Server 2005 SP2 on a Windows 2003 x64. The developer said that he needed to use OLE to talk to Oracle so I went to Oracle and downloaded the 64 bit OraOLDDB driver as recommended in a MS note.
I can connect to Oracle via tnsping and using SQLPlus but I cannot create a linked db successfully.
The linked database errors off with >> Cannot initialize data source for OLE provider "OraOLEDB.Oracle" for Lined Server "X" (Microsoft SQL Server error: 7399) << (manually typed)

I have serveral linked databases to Oracle that I have built but all of them are 1- on SQL Server 2000 and 2- are 32 bit. If anyone knows of any additional patches (Windows or Oracle) necessary to resolve this I would appreciate the information. Also there are potential firewall issues though the fact that SQLPus can be used seems to rule this out, but if there are any ports associated with OLE I would like to check on them specifically.

Thank you for reminding me what I already knew but in my haste to post out a reply I had forgotten to consider looking at the provider properties.
Today I did and the linked database still failed. The though occurred to me a little later to delete and recreate the linked db and bingo I had a working linked database to Oracle. Now I have three of them and the developer should be working with them now.
This is the first time I ever had to change a provider property to get the provider to work. I would have thought that when the Oracle client install process registered the OLE provider with SQL Server 2005 it would be set with the proper defaults to work.

Excel-2007 cannot connect to Oracle ODBC data source, Control Panel can.


I cannot make an ODBC connection from Exce-2007 to Oracle work. I am an expert Excel and VBA user (since 1994) and I have frequently used Excel to access ODBC databases, including Oracle (I have done this with Excel-2003 both with worksheet queries and have written VBA ADO-connection routines). And even though in Excel-2007 a worksheet ODBC query is supposed to be easier to create than in previous version of Excel, my connection fails. Any suggestions and all help are welcome and much appreciated.
DETAILS


1) What is my system? I am using Excel-2007 on Windows Vista x64 and Oracle server v.11g on my computer (all this is on my computer, no network issues).
2) Why use Excel with Oracle at all? I use Excel-2007 to access Oracle rather than Access-2007 (or any other application like TOAD, etc.) because I do engineering calculations with the data stored in Oracle. These calculations are easier done in Excel (I suppose that one alternative to this could be to use some sql or Access to get the data from the database, then store it as plain vanilla CSV file, then open this file in Excel, then do the math (the math involves complex optimisation algorithms), then save the results as CSV, then use some sql or Access to put the data back into the database. Howwever this does not strike me as a quick or neat solution. And after all Excel has been designed to access ODBC databases, so why not use it?)
3) What do I do in Excel-2007 that won't work? I create an ODBC link to Oracle that does not work. In Excel-2007 this is straightforward:

<ul>
<li>define an ODBC connection (Data tab --> From other sources --> From data connection wizard);</li>
<li>define a query on the worksheet -- that's it, this is all!</li>
</ul>

I start with creating an ODBC connection:
a) I choose an ODBC data source type: ODBC DSN
b) Excel-2007 displays the list of the available ODBC data sources. I see in it my Oracle database name and I select it.
c) Excel-2007 displays the Data Link Properties:
- the "Provider" has a list of the OLE DB drivers with preselected "Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers". I keep this default selection.
- the "Connection" tab has a connection string "DSN=<my database name>" which I keep, it also has fields for the user name and the password, which I fill with the correct credentials.
- Finally there is a button "Test Connection", which when I click produces the following error message:
"Test connection failed because of an error in initializing provider. 
Unespecified error"

4) Additional food for thought:
a) In the above walk-through the only data, which I type, are the user name and password, everything else is selected from lists offered by Excel-2007, hence any possibility of typos being the cause of the problem can safely be discarded.
b) I can test the ODBC driver in the Control Panel and it shows that it can connect to the Oracle database:
- in Control Panel --> Admin Tools --> Data Sources (ODBC) on the "User DSN" tab I can see the list of the available ODBC data sources (same list as in Excel-2007, point 3b above) with the name of my database in it;
- selecting the name of my database from the list of the sources and clicking "Configure" button opens a tab with Data Source Name (same as in Excel-2007), TNS Service Name and User ID. I enter <user name>/<password> and click "Test Connection" button. A message "Connection successful" appears (just for a test I enter incorrect user credentials and "Unable to connect" message appears)
BOTTOM LINE


The procedure for using an ODBC connection from Excel is very simple, in the past I have created and used such connections numerous times with Excel-2003 and earlier on Win-XP and earlier. But now on Excel-2007 and Vista-x64 I cannot make it work.
Also, testing an ODBC connection driver is really easy and simple to be done in the Control Panel. There testing the same ODBC connection, which fails in Excel-2007, results in success.
I am frustrated by the simplicity of the problem and yet the persistant error. I have lost now two full days in failed attempts to make the simple procedure work and in searching the internet for answers.

Excel 2007 is a 32-bit application.
When installing 32-bit applications in a 64-bit environment, the "default" location is:
C:\Program files (x86)\...
Excel then launches from this location.
However, when it connects to Oracle and passes the name of the calling program, Oracle attempts to "interpret" the value of (x86) as if
the value within the parenthesis are being passed as a reference. Of course, iOracle doesn't find anything, so the result is (),
and then it cannot return the connection info back to the calling application.
I corrected it by installing Excel in C:\Program Files\, and once launched from that location, it works the same as on the 32-bit machines.
However, at my location, they are FORCING Excel to be installed in the(x86) location.
What I'm trying to discover now is:
Is it possible to flag Oracle to NOT process the embedded variables?
Or, is it possible to assign a variable in Oracle such that x86 = "(x86)", so that the end result is viable?

Connect to Oracle without Oracle Client in Windows?

Is there anyway to connect to Oracle DB without any installation of Oracle Product in Client?
I am using MS ODBC Driver Oracle but It need the "Data Source Name"
It seems that client machine do need to Setup the NET 8 Configure / Tnsname.ora
I can try to set any thing in Oracle Server, But want to minimize the effort doing on the client (Because there are many!).
I am using Visual Basic, WIN XP as client Platform. WIN 2K as Oracle DB Server.
Can anybody give me a hand. Thank you very much!

You'll need to install Oracle Client in the client machine. ODBC (or other) connections need OCI and Oracle Net layers.
The Oracle ODBC has a lot of dependencies, probably a thousand files. Unfortunately Client is pretty heavy... managewize also. So that's why you should develop "internet apps". :)

Memory problems - WIN 2K, service pack 4 with Oracle 9.2.0.4.0

We have a Win 2K server that is running Oracle Server 9.2.0.4.0. Recently we upgraded to NT service pack 4 and have been experiencing memory problems - running out of process memory. We think that Oracle may be causing this, as we have done some troubleshooting. What may be happening is that every time we make an Oracle call, there is some kind of memory leak that is occurring. This is related to connecting to the C runtime.dll.
Is this familiar to anyone, or does anyone know where I can locate some documentation about this?

I think it is not so hard issue. there could be many reason for this. I will suggest that first you should increase virtual memory of your OS and then examine the performance. SP4 is basically security pack and most MS SP related to Securities issues they do not increase system burden.

Connection to Oracle gets disconnected

Hi,
We are using Oracle 8.1.6 on Red Hat Linux 6.2 and for client we are using the Windows NT client.
The problem is that when connected to Oracle the connection is dropped, giving end-of-communication channel message (in SQL*Plus). I have checked the Listner status, up all day!!!. I checked all the Logs but in vain.
When I ping to the server it works fine, but when I telnet to server it gives error connection to server lost/failed.
This happens not only for Sql*plus but with other applications also.

The environement that i have is this
1. JDK 1.3
2. Database 11g is on remote system
3. Oracle client on my local system ( Connecting to the 11g DB through the client works fine)

The driver being used by your weblogic is too old and incompatible with the DBMS. Upgrade the driver.

Client unable to connect to Oracle 10g on linux

I have installed Oracle 10g on an Intel box running RedHat AS 3.0. The database installation was succesful but I am unable to connect to it from the client on my laptop running Oracle 10g client and Winfdows XP Pro. The server ip is 192.168.1.10 and I can ping it from the client:

Ok, I was able to succesfully connect to the database from the client. I made the following changes to the sqlnet.ora, tnsnames and listener. Here are the changes I made:

I start the dbconsole using the folowing command:

What am I doing wrong this time?
