A 20" imac or 15"mbp?

I'm about to place an order for a mac and im undecided which one 20"imac or 15"mbp . I do photo retouching. as far as portability it does not matter i willl be happy with either. can i get some help.
thanx

It really comes down to what meets your needs. Since portability isn't important to you, the main consideration may be that you get a bigger screen with the 20" iMac. I can't tell you what you should do, but I can explain why I have both a G5 tower & a MacBook Pro (replacing a 15" PowerBook just a week ago). I don't use the 'Book daily & I don't travel a lot (mostly an annual trip to Macworld in San Francisco), so many would question the need for a portable. Living in an area where power outages lasting 24-30 hours happen a time or two a year, I can take my 'Book to one of the county libraries connect to their wireless network. I take it to meetings to take notes, to my user group where we use it for demos, etc. Once you have a portable, you'll wonder how you lived without one. I still use my G5 & 23" monitor most of the time, for the "extra real estate" for doing newsletters & anything else that is easier to work on spread out.

  • Previously installed Aperture3 on an iMac and a MBP. I Bought a new MBA to replace the MBP and I want to install Aperture3 on the new MBA.  The installer says the serial code is invalid? What do I do?

I previously bought Aperture 3 and installed in on an iMac and a MBP.  I just bought a new MBA to replace the MBP, but the MBA doesn't have enough memory for me to do a complete restore of the MBP on the MBA.  So I am trying to find a way to deactivate the serial code or Aperture 3 on the MBP so I can reinstall Aperture 3 on the MBA.  I have been searching forums and google and I have not been any answers.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

How did you buy Aperture? Did you buy it from the App Store? Then you can download it again on your MBA, if you sign into the App Store.
If you bought Aperture buy buying a licence key to unlock the trial, try if this download link for the trial version still works: if yes, you can unlock it with your serial number:
    http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/Aperture/061-8328 .20101020.AprE3/ApertureTrial3.1.dmg
And if you own the boxed DVD installer , use the DVD to install Aperture on your MBA. If the installer does not work - and you get the message
"check with the developer to make sure Aperture works with this version of Mac OS X"
you may have a problem with an expired developer certificate (they expired mid march).
To fix this, set the Date  in " SystemPreferences -> Date&Time" to a date well before March 2012 and run the Installer again. If that succeeds and Aperture now runs, reset the date to the current date.
You can see your serial number in the "About" panel in the main Aperture menu bar on your MBP:
    Aperture > About Aperture.
For the "invaldid serial number" see these links: You may have read the letters incorrectly - some are look alike, "1" or "I", "0" or "O"; your shift-lock key may be set.

  • 2007 iMac vs New MBP for Web/Graphic Design?

    Hey everyone,
I'm a web/graphic designer currently using a Mid-2007 iMac and looking to upgrade to the top level MBP for better performance and mobility. I'm usually running a few programs at a time (photoshop, indesign, illustrator, safari, spotify, etc) and my current setup seems to be bogging down lately. Given the specs below, will I see a big boost in performance by upgrading to the MBP? On paper 2.4ghz vs 2.8ghz doesn't seem like a lot, but I know the RAM, graphics card and whatever "turbo boost" is all play a big role as well. Any advice?
    Current iMac:
    -Mid-2007 iMac - 24"
    -2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    -4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
-ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB
    -500 GB SATA Disk
    Potential MBP:
-2.8GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 4.0GHz
    -16GB 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM
    -512GB PCIe-based Flash Storage
-Intel Iris Pro Graphics and NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M with 2GB of GDDR5 memory

    Hi Bee!
Thanks very much for your advice!
However, why do you suggest the 21.5" over the 27"? Do you think it is worth the extra screen size, because I can afford either?
It seemed to me that the iMac was the best option also - I'm in need of the power, but I'm still deliberating over size.
Also, on a side note, do you know of any iPhone apps that can help me with transferring files from home to college I'm getting an iPod Touch as part of the new deal Apple are running and I just wondered if there were any apps that I would find handy for transporting files etc.?
    Thanks again!

  • Can I pick what is transferred from iMac to new MBP ?? (iMac larger HD)

    Hi everyone
My new 17" MBP 2.33/2GB/7200rpm100gb laptop shipped today (after a weeks delay) and should arrive Thurs 16th in CT.
    I also own iMac G5 2.1 Ghz, 20", an eMac 1Ghz G4, and now, finally deceased PowerBook G3 500 Pismo (2000), 1GB RAM; 60gb 7200rpm.
When I got my iMac (which I use at work & home) I transfered via firewire everything from my PB G3 500, the setup program on iMac just transferred everything and only gave me the option to transfer or not.
But my iMac disk, 250GB, is 4 gb short of being full from music and work files). Can I pick and choose which files or programs are transferred to new 100gb drive ?? I don't want all the programs and files sent.
I really only want Mail/Address Book/Calender files, accounts and contacts, plus Safari's bookmarks.
I don't want all keychains, extra programs and all music files sent.
    Help

Migration Assistant won't provide file level transfers. It's also not a good way to transfer data between PPC and Intel Macs. Your best option is to simply copy the files from one computer to the other. You can connect the computers via network and transfer using file sharing or you can connect them via Firewire cable and use Target Disk Mode.
You will find the Mail and Safari data in /Home/Library/Mail/ and /Home/Library/Safari/ folders, respectively. Address Book and iCal data are found in /Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/ folder and /Home/Library/Application Support/iCal/ folder, respectively. Be sure to also copy the preference files from the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder for Mail, Safari, Address Book, and iCal. They will start with "com.apple." and end with ".plist".
Because your older Macs are PPC machines avoid transferring anything other than your data files. Intel and PPC software are not compatible.

  • IMac vs. MBP Display: Better for Photo Editing?

I have been considering getting a new iMac, and I would like to do photo editing (somewhere in the middle between professional and iPhoto). First I thought 20", but then I learned about the relatively poorer display quality. Then I thought 24", but still had concerns about gradients. Then I waited for the new (Penryn) iMacs, but it sounds like there hasn't been an obvious improvement in iMac display quality.
Would a MacBook Pro be a better bet? Would anyone care to give their opinion of the display pros/cons of using a MBP vs. a current iMac.
    Thanks in advance.

Well, they both have their pros and cons IMO. The MBPs usually have more even backlighting but the color representation on the iMac is much better to my eyes.
To be honest, the gradient and yellow tint on the iMac doesn't disturb me much when editing photos (but it does for most other task). The screen is a bit too bright though which can result in you pictures becoming too dark when viewed elsewhere or printed.
If you are serious about photo editing I'd suggest the 15" MBP or perhaps even a Mac Mini (depending on your harware needs) and an external display (there are some fairly cheap ones that are better than both the MBP and iMac displays when it comes to photo editing).

  • Restored iMac from an MBP Backup giving problems with external devices

Recently, I restored from an MBP Leopard OS Time machine Backup into a new iMac 27".
Restoring process ran smoothly and took like an hour to recover my files and applications from the external disk time machine backup and after that the new iMac had everything my old MBP used to have but the OS. So far so good.
But now I'm having problems connecting external devices, like the very same external disk to set my time machine backup or a Cannon Printer.
The iMac can recognize and attach the external HDD (iOmega 1TB), I've succesfully formated it several times, but as soon as the backup process starts it will idle after backing 200MB or so and the HDD will be abruptly disconnected.
Regarding the MP610 Cannon printer/scanner I used it smoothly once from this iMac, but after that it's been impossible to scan or print again, and it keeps saying it is connected to an MBP instead of an iMac!
I already read the other related topics but my case is slightly different than those, so I will appreciate anyhelp you could provide me.

When you say you restored, what does that mean? Did you do a full restore, installing the system from the backup onto the iMac? If so, you've probably borked the system and will have to reinstall it. See:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2186
Also, if you restored applications, it's possible some of those applications are not installed correctly or are not compatible with SL. Printing problems are common among folks who have not updated printer drivers to SL-compatible versions.

  • Using an iMac and a MBP with iTunes, but NOT sync'ed.

I imagine that this has been asked before, but...
I started out with a MBP... Recently, I have purchased a new iMac. I have successfully migrated all of my files from the MBPro to the iMac. Now that I have the much more substantial HD space on the iMac, I would like to remove many files from the MBP (photos, iTunes, etc.) But, I would like to have a way to "sync" files and photos and playlists from my iMac and the iTunes installed there. Is there a way to do this? I don't want to install the whole music library, I would rather just have a playlist that I could sync. Kind of like what the iPhone does.
I'm fairly new to the Mac platform (as you can probably tell), I suppose I could delete the files from the MBP and use the iPhone as a go between, if I use a different iTunes library...but is that the best way?
I appreciate any help or info provided!

    Greetings,
If you are referring to simply migrating an iTunes Library from one Mac to another, then it sounds like it's pretty much done. - With regard to syncing files between two libraries; I don't think that iTunes supports this.
The easiest workaround there is simply to share your library using iTunes; this will give your other Mac access to the same files, it also eliminates inconsitencies as the library will only be stored on one Mac and won't become out of sync.
I'll give you 2 links; the first relates to migrating your Library, the second relates to setting up Library sharing.

  • IMac vs. MBP - Need advice.

I need some advice from Apple guru's... I have a 2009 MBP that no longer meets my needs (only 4g ram and 500g HD).  I have several large iphoto libraries and do lots with imovie.  I need more power!  I also travel some.
    So... MBP or iMac????????
iMac is crazy poweful and has up to 3 TB of memory.  I really hate using External Drives.... I want stuff local as much as possible. I probably have 1.5TB worth of stuff (photos and movies) since I have small kids.
rMBP has crazy power too and has up to 1TB of memory.  Therefore I would need to use some EHD.  But I can also travel with it.
Here is what I am thinking... am I crazy?:
    Buy both.
Have iMac as the 'mothership' where I keep all my movies and photos from all years, except the current year.
Have rMBP with current year's iphoto and imovie libraries... then move those libraries to the iMac at end of every year.  This will allow me to travel with it also.
Can I remote into an iMac from rMBP if I am a 1000 miles away and need something from it?
Two computers may make for confusion regarding what's on what machine.
Can you tell I am confused!!!!
    Thanks!

One thing you can try is calling Apple Customer Relations again at 800-767-2775, they might be more sympathetic to you this time. I would ask to be escalated to the next level and see if someone more senior can help.
I'm afraid that the problem at the root of this is the fact that you don't have Apple Care. Unfortunately, Apple respond very well indeed to those who do, but seem to to be able to do much to those outside the original warranty period.
I wish I could be more optimistic, you'll just have to charm the second lever person you speak to at Customer relations...

  • One mouse, one keyboard, one iMac and one MBP

How can I use a thunderbolt cable to connect my MBP to my 27" iMac and take full advantage of the full screen but use only one magic mouse and mac keyboard? When paring to the MBP, then I can no longer export the display via TDB to my iMac.

I have a wireless network at home provided by Airport Extreme Base Station and two AE's.
I have enabaled file sharing on both my iMac G5 and my MacBook Pro.
I am able to mount my iMac HD (and other external drives) on my MacBook Pro but I am unable to mount my MacBook Pro on my iMac.
Are there any network genii out there that can help?
    Thanks

You are saying that is is seeing your library but you can't play music. Do you see the songs, albums and so on in the library? Did you try closing the Music App completely and launch it again?
Tap the home button once. Then tap the home button twice and the recents tray will appear at the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button twice. Launch the Music app again.
Sometimes it helps if you reboot the iPad when mysterious problems arise.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • Is there any way to sync created mailboxes [not inboxes] from my iMac to my MBP?

I've created storage mailboxes for each client in Mail [Mavericks] on my main machine [iMac]. But I also check email on my MacBook Pro when I'm onsite or out of town. Is there anyway to sync the created mailboxes? Obviously, the inboxes are all syncing...I'm really just interested in the created mailboxes.
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the tip...unfortunately I've got more than 1 email address feeding those created mailboxes, so I kinda need them in one place.
So do I, but that doesn't keep me from storing them in an IMAP server. I just move the messages from the incoming servers to the appropriate storage server.
Note that the storage server doesn't have to be the same as any of the incoming servers.

  • I opened original iPhoto Library (from iMac 10.8.5) on new MBP and now it won't open on iMac

As my main computer I use an iMac which is not yet updated to Mavericks and I'd rather not update for now. I recently bought a MBP retina which has Mavericks on it.
Whilst I was using the shared network to copy over some files to my new macbook I opening the iPhoto library off my iMac onto my MBP. Everything worked fine. However when I tried to open that library on my iMac it doesn't work. I just get a pop up saying:
The library “iPhoto Library” cannot be opened.
To open it, you must upgrade to the latest version of iPhoto.
    Quit
I've tried updating but of course I cannot. I can't even double check what version of iPhoto I am running as everything is greyed out. When I go to the app store and click update I get:
Download an older version of this app?
The current version requires OS X 10.9 or later, but you can download the last compatible version.
When I download the older version it doesn't do anything unfortunately. Is there a way to get my iphoto library back on my iMac as there's a LOT of images on there that I need.
    Thanks

You will need to restore your iPhoto Library from a back up of your iMac prior to when you opened it on your new MBP Retina.
The iPhoto app for OS X Mavericks upgrades the iPhoto Library DB and you can't go back. There should have been a message displayed when you first tried opening it from your MBP Retina warning you that the libary will be upgraded.
So, as long as you have a back up of the library prior to opening it with an OS X Mavericks Mac, you can continue using it with your iMac running OS X Mountain Lion. What this means is, until you upgrade your iMac to OS X Mavericks and the newer version of iPhoto, you will have to maintain 2 iPhoto Libraries and not share it.
