A better (less expensive) iPod case?

Hi all,
I was hoping maybe someone could point me in the direction of an iPod case that is little more than a thin layer of film and only protects from scratches, that is less than $25.
In short, something similar to this, but cheaper:

I'm very happy with my iPod socks. I've had my iPod for about 5 months now, and it is totally scratch free.

  • Apple displays superior to other less expensive models?

    Hi.
I'm getting ready to install a new desktop computer setup.
Already I have purchased, but not yet removed from the box a huge (to me) LCD TFT Viewsonic 22 inch monitor. This display looked fabulous in the store and, with a rebate, it cost me only $320.
But are Apple displays superior to less expensive ones, such as Viewsonic, Acer, Samsung, etc.?
Thanks for your opinions and insights.

Apple is a manufacturer, but not the OEM of the panel. it is not necessarily true that the panel used is the same from product to product... even the ACD undergoes panel changes as their supply runs out from 1 source. but, your logic is compelling, if you want a a similiar image from the iMac monitor to the external display, the Apple monitor might lend itself better to this goal, but many 3rd party manufacturers should also do nicely. there is no such thing a "Mac" video... video is video and each monitor represents the reference video to a different level of accuracy. reviews that say "this monitor was really bright - i like it" are missing the point that there is in fact a correct contrast and brightness setting.
not nano-seconds, but milli-seconds. yes it is significant, but you cannot rely on published manufacturers specifications to compare any two products. there are enough variations in measurement techniques to effectively make any published claim totally useless, or at least give it a +/- 15 ms margin of error (or really +15ms margin of error). better response time equates to less ghosting on motion or video. if you work with static office type documents, latency doesn't isn't much of an issue for you. if you play games or watch video, it could be. anything below 16ms is generally considered quite good. gamers are usually the one that require extreme performance, because outside of scientific computing and AEC professionals, they are the only ones really pushing the limits of computer graphics hardware.
Apple displays are expensive. i'm not going to counter that point. a significant portion of the cost goes into the industrial design of the case, which has nothing to do with the performance of the display. its also marketing of scale... simple marketing 101... they aim at the high end consumer, not the big box econo-box retailers, so the pricing reflects this too. i own a 30", i like it, and want to buy another one. ultimately, you have to make your own decision about your money and how important all of these elements are to you.

  • Earbuds - should I get the more expensive ones or the less expensive ones?

I have an iPod Nano 5th generation.
If I get the special earbuds that have the mike and the remote controls, will they actually save any power from the battery?  Or is it just a convenience thing?
If the more expensive earbuds will help to save some power from the battery, I will get them.  Otherwise, I will get a less expensive set!
Thanks in advance for answering my question!
    Talk to y'all later!
    Mark

As a matter of expense only then you could just stay with the Apple earbuds that come with the device. If it is a matter of audio quality then you will notice some difference by opting up to a higher quality brand such as Sennheizer, Klipsch, Shure. There are already compromises in audio quality with portable players no matter the file format [AAC, MP3] , but if those are not considerations then use the Apple buds. You will not notice an appreciable difference in battery usage with any buds at all. A better option for quality is high quality headphones: (again) Sennheizer, Sony, Bose, but these have there own battery power and do not use the Nano's power for use.

  • Creating less expensive small xSAN for 2 editors - suggestions?

I've been setting up a second editing bay for our company which is supposed to have identical capabilities to my own. It's a Quad with Kona LHe, just like I'm using. We mostly edit TV comercials in DV50, uncompressed 10bit SD and DVCProHD 720P so our bandwidth requirements usually out spec editing over ethernet.
Since both editors need to have equal capability, I have chosen to create a small xSAN to allow both editors to access the same media drives simultaneously. With a SAN, large server volumes (located on a fibre channel network) show up on the editor computers just as a simple local hard drive would at very fast speed. You can point FCP scratches to the same places on each machine, then use any machine to edit any project instantly. My budget is large by my standards, but not very large on the scale of typical xSAN implementations so I've been collecting "deals" on the gear I need before I put it all together.
Since I'm on a budget, it has been fun finding much of the gear on ebay, etc. FYI, here is a quick list of the stuff I've acquired:
    xServe RAID 5.6TB refurbished from Techrestore.com: $5900
xServe 2Ghz Metadata controller w/ Tiger Server 1.5GB ECC RAM, PCIX fibre card new, but last year's model from Smalldog: $2600
Brocade Silkworm 3200 8 channel 2Gb entry fibre switch new on ebay: $950
2 PCI Express fibre cards new for 2 editor G5 quads: $1100
3 xSAN licenses new on eBay: $1300
Mini GB ethernet network stuff and switch (for metadata only - separate from our LAN network): $150
Misc. fibre cables and tranceivers: $700
One of my editing G5's will act as the fallback Metadata controller in case the xServe goes down at any time.
I also am planning on at least 8 hours of time from a local xSAN authorized tech to help me set everything up and teach me what I need to maintain the system. This should be about $700 or so.
I have found several articles posted at xsanity.com very helpful in planning this.
If any of you have any experience with xSAN, you might agree this is a very low cost of entry into this very exciting new workflow. $13.5K for a fully functioning xSAN of this size is not bad at all. Many would spend that on the xServe RAID alone, sans SAN;-) And I can expand very easily since my switch will still have 3 unused ports. Note: the 5.6TB xServe RAID will only be about 4TB after accounting for the RAID 5 and dedicated (and mirrored) metadata volumes. Only 4TB. Pity!
Now that I have the main hardware components ready, it's time to install and setup the system. I'll be posting my progess in the next few weeks as this happens, but first would like to hear any impressions on this. Suggestions or warnings are appreciated by those with experience with xSAN. The xSAN forum here at Apple is used mostly by IT professionals and I'm mostly interested in hearing comments from editors and those that use the system in small settings like my own.
One question for the Gurus: I don't believe FCP projects can be opened and used by two people at the same time, but if there is a way to do this without corrupting the project file, I would love to know.
I'm also seeking to hire an assistant to occupy the new editing bay. Broad multimedia skills are needed, but I can train to a degree. We're an advertising agency just north of Salt Lake City, Utah. Please let me know if any of you are interested.

Thanks for the suggestions. Brian, I'll be sure to get you some points once I close the topic.
I didn't realize the Project files are best copied to the hard drive. Is this for a permissions related reason or just to avoid short spikes in bandwidth during saves?
I agree that Metadata is best on a dedicated controller with full scale xSANs, however with just 2 systems editing mostly DVCPro50 resolution projects I can't imagine burning up more than 100MB/sec at any given time. OK, maybe, but this is unlikely for next year or so. I've read that a single controller can achieve 80MB/sec easily, so 2 should be around 150MB/sec under heavy load. I'll have the metadata mirrored to 2 drives on one side of the XSR and the remaining 5 drives on that controller in a RAID 5. The other side of the XSR will be a full 7 drive RAID 5. These 2 data LUNs will be striped together in xSAN to achieve a full bandwidth of about 150MB/sec. I was told that the XSR controller can handle multiple RAID's at the same time so I can send metadata to one mirror array and designate the other as a RAID 5 LUN. Considering the small size of the data going to the metadata volumes and the relative simplicity of RAID 1 mirroring, I believe the controller shouldn't be adversly affected by this. Is this incorrect in your experience?
I do plan on turning off the cache of the XSR since the system will be used for editing, yet it would be nice to have cache for the metadata so that's a point to consider.
THe metadata should be segregated on its own XSR controller.
Are you saying that the metadata sharing the same controller as the video data is going to slow the whole system down even though the metadata is located on separate, dedicated drives in that controller? I thought metadata was tiny and required very little bandwidth on the bus of a controller. If this is the case, the only bottleneck would be the RAID chip in the XSR. Again, these metadata files are very small and RAID 1 is very simple, so I don't see how it could slow things down enough to justify another $4K for a new XSR. If you still disagree, please let me know.
As per your suggestion, and considering your stellar reputation in this forum, I'm shopping right now for a mostly empty xServe RAID to use this for just the Metadata volumes mirrored. It just seems like a huge waste to get an XSR just to use 2 drive bays mirrored. The plus side of this is I could begin filling the other controller in the future as my storage needs expand.
It would be really cool to use the 2 drive bays in the Xserve Metadata controller for the metadata volumes, but I can see how that would cause problems if the xServe goes down, making the metadata invisible to the fallback MDC. 100% uptime isn't that big of a deal for me, however. As long as the XSAN comes back online safely after the xServe reboots without trouble, I'm OK with such a setup. Have you ever seen this done? It seems a bit of a hack to use anything but fibre channel data. I'd hate to introduce too much complexity just to save some bucks, but it is an intriguing idea and would cost a fraction of a new XSR. It would be fast since the writing the metadata would be local with very little latency.
For this reason, I'm also very interested to find any other simple and less expensive Fibre based storage solutions that could host my metadata as an alternative to full blown XSR for this. There are all kinds of fibre drives out there, but I don't want to waste a valuable fibre switch port just for one drive. All I need is 2 hardware mirrored bays accessible over fibre, preferably sharing the same channel on my switch. Does anyone know where I might find something like this?

  • Anyone have an iPod case like this?

I want to know, does anyone have an iPod case similar to the one linked to below?
I'm looking for one for my 5th gen iTouch, and haven't been able to find one in America or on American Amazon (the one I found is on the UK Amazon).
If you have one similar to this, or any other suggestions, please answer. I like the thin, tpu material, and prefferably the case will be clear.

Will this work out for you???
I hate to be too picky but I never have quite liked those hard plastic shells. Tpu is really more of what I am looking for (and for everyone else, I prefer Amazon to eBay, so if you know of one on Amazon, that would be better). Silicone is not an option either.
It does look like a decent case at a fair price, and for trying going on what I described I marked your answer as helpful.

  • Nothing simpler, smaller, less expensive than Apple's DVI to ADC adapter?

My 2001 vintage 466 MHz PowerMac G4 with 15" Studio Display has served me well over the years. But, alas, she's running Panther (10.3.9) and lacks the requirements to move on to Leopard, which I'm ready to do. So, I decided to upgrade the machine. Since the other parts of the system (monitor, keyboard, mouse & printer) were just fine, I decided that a new Mac Mini would fit the bill nicely. (I'm also a Scotsman, always looking for ways to save money. Perhaps that's part of the problem. )
I received it yesterday and wasn't expecting the ADC-monitor to DVI-computer dilemma. (Which shows you just how out of touch I am with technology's incessant march forward.) So, I investigate solutions.
Imagine my surprise when I discover that the only solution out there is by Apple, in the form of a brick almost as big as my Mini! And, another $100 to boot! I did find a third party solution through a link on Apple's website, but that's $150! (Thanks for the referral, Apple!) My mind is boggled - there must be other available solutions but, if there are, they are evading me.
Does anyone know of any solution that is simpler, smaller and less expensive than Apple's DVI to ADC adapter?
Thanks for any and all info.

The Apple adapter is the only solution if you really want to keep that display. It might be a good time to look for a larger display, with DVI.
I am using the Apple adapter with my seven year old 22" display, but I wouldn't want to run OS X on anything smaller.

  • Dropped iPod case repair

My iPod decidet to get out of my pocket(breast pocket!:O) when i was jumping and hit the ground(gravity's fault! :D). It was a hard punch but it's still working. I've also got picture of it: http://img360.imageshack.us/img360/6029/img6793yc5.jpg
Bought it 1 month ago, and it's kind of anoyeing that it looks like that. You know that allkind of dust can get into my iPod from that crack there! :P Also know that warrant won't repair or do anything with it. I was intrested that is it possible to change that metal cover back there? I tryed to phush it to the right place but it won't stay there, where i want to.
A day after drop(today :P) bought new protective case for my iPod.
Actually there were 2 other things i like to mention(maybe it "has to be" like this).
    1.Harddisk makes weird nose(not spinning sound)when i start a vide or songs
    2.I can see backlight gleam where i shouldn't. It's about half cm from screen(it's 1/5" i guess :o))
Well... "things" happen. xD I still like Apple poducts!

To possibly help with your dust problem, because you are right you could definitely get things in there that shouldn't be in there. If you go to like a Target, Radio Shack basically anywhere that sells iPods and iPod equipment buy yourself a nice iPod case. The brand case I have is called "incase" its like a stretchy kinda nylon feeling case with a nice spin wheel cover, that might help keep dust out of it. If you search around there are lots of different kinds of cases out there you could get to put it in. As for replacing the metal cover, I don't know anything about that subject. Your hard drive making a weird noise could be from dropping it. Same with the backlight gleam.
