A Better Way to "Preview" Effects in FCP?

Okay, in Motion (which I've recently started using), you can browse various effects (filters, behaviors, etc.) in the Library Pane and see a helpful little thumbnail movie, along with a verbal description, which gives you a good idea of what kind of "effect" that particular Effect is going to have.
I'm told (though I've not used either app myself) that both iMovie '08 and Adobe's Premiere have a similar mini-preview function to help you choose the right filter and/or transition.
So my question is (before submitting another Feature Request to the FCP team): what is the closest thing to this much appreciated function in the current version of Final Cut?
I'm currently working on a project which demands a very wide variety of different (and sometimes even intentionally cheesy) filters and transitions. So I seem to spend a lot of time in my Browser's Effects tab searching for "something different", or wondering "what the heck does this one do?" -- and often having to actually drop the effect and/or transition into a Timeline (and then reading e-mails while it renders), just to get a sense of what it actually does.
So...
— Has anyone created some sort of "FCP Effects Previewer" that mimics the kind of function already built-in to Motion?
— Is there a website somewhere with easy-to-search little examples of every Final Cut filter and transition?
— Or has anyone even a created a pdf with clear verbal descriptions and accompanying screenshots of same (or even just simple diagrams to illustrate all the different wipe transitions)?
So far my Googling on this topic hasn't been very successful, but I'd appreciate any tips on where to look.
Thanks,
John Bertram

Hi again.
FWIW, it was Motion which I've only recently started using. I've actually been working with FinalCut since version 4.5, though so far not for "paying clients" (in other words, just for my own indie film work, plus some pro bono projects for friends in theater and business presentations). So in that sense my work as a "professional" editor is mostly pre-NLE, cutting 16mm docs and TV episodes on Steenbecks a couple of lifetimes ago.
But you've raised an interesting point, which I guess could be summarized as the ongoing tension between making a Pro App "stronger" (more versatile, more compatible, more stable) while also trying to make its interface “friendlier" (easier to learn, easier to customize, easier to navigate, etc.). And I can certainly understand how, for those who've slogged their way up several years of learning curves, the former category is always going to be top priority in terms of how Apple allocates its development resources.
But whenever I venture into a previously unexplored quadrant of the Final Cut galaxy (and that can include even just an Effects Tab folder I've never opened before), I definitely experience that Newbie Chill all over again. So I've always hoped (perhaps naively) that FinalCut's development could pursue BOTH goals simultaneously -- overhaul the Media Manager; keep adding those new codecs -- while at the same time keep making the FCP interface a more inviting, more comfortable place in which to work.
When I think about the many FCP Feedback Suggestions I've submitted over the years (also for Logic Express then Logic Studio), I can see how a lot of them -- not all, but quite a few -- would fall into that second, “user-friendliness” category. The irony is that many of the feature requests I've submitted for the Consumer apps -- ways to make iPhoto, say (or Address Book, or Pages, or whatever) more powerful -- would fall into the first category, the it-really-should-be-able-to-do-this-or-that, "beefing up the engine" one. And those suggestions, when discussed in their respective forums, have sometimes drawn the criticism of "Hey c'mon -- it's just a Consumer App".
But every once in a while, a new version gets released, and some progress is made on both fronts. So I guess I’ll just keep tilting at both windmills for now.
Cheers,
jb

  • There's got to be a better way to do this (RAM preview frustration)

    I loaded a 1:20 second Full HD clip into after effects. I need to edit the video based on certain sounds in the video and see if I'm matching them up correctly by previewing it with sound.
    The problem is i'm getting frustrated due to After effects not behaving like Premiere. First who thought it was a good idea not to incorporate sound into after effects? Second, I have an i7 sandy bridge processor, and 16 gbs of ram, yet it still takes time to render the ram preview (with no effects on it yet).
    So ram preview is my only option for sound, but the problem is every time I hit ram preview it starts the video all the way from the beginning. This is frustrating as I want to start at a specific point. Imagine having a longer video where the editing needs to take place at the end.
    There are people out there doing a lot more complicated professional projects, what do you guys do to get around this?
    Why can't after effects do some basic things like premiere like render fast with sound? Is it due to Mercury engine and 64 bits?
    This is one of the best products on the market, surely there is a better way to do this right?

    but the problem is every time I hit ram preview it starts the video all the way from the beginning.
    Window --> Preview, enable the "From current time" option
    yet it still takes time to render the ram preview (with no effects on it yet).
    There is no magic button. If it is compressed, naturally it needs to be decompressed and decoded first. This can consume resources even on fast machines. Furthermore, drive speed matters a lot in such cases. This might actualyl multiply, if you use multiprocessing, so for this kind of simple setup it's usually better to not use it. If your harddrives are fragmented or simply generally slow, frames cannot be loaded as fast and neither will AE be able to use the disk cache. Ergo, convert the footage and move it to the fastest drive in your system.
    what do you guys do to get around this?
    We preview at reduced compo resolution to extend RAM previews and place markers while the RAM preview plays using the * key on the numpad.

  • A better way to run a 7 day report?

    Using Crystal Reports 11
    I am hoping there is a better way of running a seven day report that i have to run weekly
    In the report i have it set when refreshing the document, the "Prompt for new parameter values" comes up and there is a date field for start and end
    This is how i did it
    I made a formula called "Date" this comes from the closed date of our accounts
    I made a Parameter Field "Start Date" with the TYPE field is "Date"
    I made a Parameter Field "End Date" with the TYPE field is "Date"
    I made a Select Expert Using data from the "ClosedDate" in the first drop down I picked "Formula" and used this as the formula
    {WH_ACCTCOMMON.CLOSEDATE} in {?Start Date} to {?End Date}
    Two things
    1. Is there a way to have "Prompt for new parameters values" as the default checked off box when clicking "Refresh"?
    2. Is there a way to only enter a start date and the refresh would just run 7 days without entering a end date?

    Hi,
    Here's a suggestion for question 1:
    When you preview the report for 1st time there is no prompt window that asks you to select whether you wish to 'Use current values' or 'Prompt for new values'.
    If the Preview window is open and you hit refresh again, this is when you get the pop-up with the above options. If you close the Preview window and refresh again, you would not get a pop-up and it will show the Prompt window instead.
    For question 1, you can follow Alun's sugestions.

  • A better way to Double Click

    I have been wondering if there is a better way to detect single clicks Vs double clikcs than the model currently implemented. I am sure all of you have run into the problem of even though an event listener detects a double click eventually, it detects the single click first, so often you have to compromise the quality of your software to account for that. I have considered writing my own custom handler using threads and such, but it seems to me there must be a better way out there that I just have not been able to find. I need a way to detect double clicks, and fool the machine into believing no single click has occured. Must I re-invent the wheel?
    AC

    I agree that GUIs should have some uniformity to
    them..especially as we enter an age where computers
    are ubiquitous. But there are some situations where
    customized behavior is preferrable. If you have ever
    worked with movie special effects software, some art
    software, music software, especially, you know that to
    make a GUI intuitive, sometimes liberties must be
    taken with the 'standard' gui design.The application determines the standard not the OS nor the GUI.
    And to say 'Your code is not standard, therefore the
    fact that java cannont accurately distinguish between
    single and double clicks is your problem' smacks of
    nonsense to me.
    We all know that Java is a great
    language.Java is not just a language it is a platform and a philosophy.
    It is quicker and easier to program in,
    than c++, but it is not at full maturity. Every c++
    development environment I have ever used had the
    ability built in to distinguish between a true single
    click and a double click.As does Swing..
    I love Java, but most
    programmers could fill a page with the enhancements
    that it needs. Not all enhancements are practical.
    Like many I balked when I first started with Java at
    the fact that it did not have true multiple
    inheritence. I now realize that
    I never really needed it anyway. But some things, eg
    templates, I definitely could still use. That being,
    said, thanks for the dialog. Templates are a complicated horror, unless you really need your software to be truly adaptable you will never use them. Even MS, Sun and IBM disposed of that need a long time ago.

  • Is there a better way to generate custom timed digital Signals

    I am trying to generate digital output of high and lows with particular delays on different lines. Each daq assistant is activating single line on a port on USB 6501. There more complex high and lows that I need to generate with variable time difference between high and low. There is codebelow which accomplishes what I am trying to achieve but for executing a long pattern of high and low signal is very time consuming to do this way. I am sure there is a better way to do this, I  not a expert on labview so I haven't uncovered its full potential. Can anybody suggest a more effective and a quick way to do this. I would hgihly appreciate. Thanks!
    I have not shown in the code below but through DAQ assistant I have initialized lines to low level logic.

  • Is There a Better Way to Work in the Marker List Window?

    Is there a better way to sequentially listen to phrases one-by-one in the Marker List window? What I'm doing is Auto-Marking one single long file to break out 271 bits and save each as their own file. It's WAY faster than copying and pasting bits into new files and "saving as" 217 times.
    BUT, after Auto-Marking, I have 300-400 phrases to listen to, deleting the non-keepers as I go, until I'm left with my "keeper" 271 marked phrases. But it's so tedious to move from phrase-to-phase. I have to double-click each one before I can hear it (you can move the cursor with the down-arrow, but it won't actually select the audio). So I have to use the mouse (unless I'm missing something) and double-click each of the hundreds of phrases. Then whenever I delete one (which I'll have to do about a hundred times or more to get rid of bad takes, alternates, etc.), inexplicably the cursor jumps way up the list so you have to scroll back down dozens of files to get to where you were. It took me 35 minutes to do it this last time.
    Contrast that with Reaper's audition/preview functionality (which, ironically, AA has also, but only for files already saved into a folder). Once I had all the files saved into a folder, I QC'd all 217 files in Reaper and MAN what a difference! All I had to do was use the "down" arrow to advance to the next file AND have it play automatically (Audition can do the same thing with the "Open File" feature). It literally took me 5 minutes to check all 217 files that way. If AA could add that kind of functionality to the Marker List window, or if I'm just completely missing something (very possible) I would REALLY be happy.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks again! Happy New Years again!
    Ken

    Wild Duck,
    That doesn't quite do what I need. My end-product is 271 (used to be 116) separate files created from one large file. That large one is made up of WAY more than 271 (the VO actor records different versions of some commands, makes mistakes, etc.).
    So I need the ability to listen to each marker, and then be able to delete it if need be.
    The Playlist makes this impossible in two ways. It only has 2 options for hearing each marker, and neither option allows me to delete that marker after I've heard it. It either plays them all back-to-back without stopping, or it plays each as you click the "Move Down" button. That last one would be great if showed me which marker was playing! But it doesn't, so there is no way for me to know which marker number I just heard, nor can I delete that marker after I hear it.
    Sigh.
    Thanks for the tip though:).

  • Better Way To Do This? Selector Operator...

    I'm currently writing the selection operator for the algorithm. The aim of it is
    to rate how the coursework block have been allocated and give there allocation
    a rating...
    How I have done it is have a method that searches through the one of the parent
    timetables. It looks for coursework time blocks. Once it finds one it notes
    this and looks at the next block along. If this is a coursework time block it
    notes this as well. I then perform an operation comparing these two coursework
    time blocks to find out if they are for the same Module. If they are not this
    is not a very effective coursework timetable strategy.
    Because of this I note in an array the the position of these two coursework time
    block and give them a fitness rating of 1000. I then go on to see if the next
    block is a coursework time block. If it is and its not of the same Module ID of
    the two previous then I not these 3 block down in an array and give them a
    fitness rating of 2000.
    My concern is that I am using allot of if and for loop's and the code is
    starting to look untidy at best. Is there any better way of doing this?
    Below Is my code:
          * @param parentOne
          * @param parentTwo
         public void selectionOperator(ArrayList parentOne, ArrayList parentTwo){
              // Store's the fitness rating of sections of the timetable...
              ArrayList parentOneBlockFitnessRating = new ArrayList ();
              ArrayList parentTwoBlockFitnessRating = new ArrayList ();
              //Loops through the timetable's timeblocks...
              for (int i = 0; i < parentOne.size(); i++) {
                   //Checks to see if the current time block is of the class: CourseworkTimeBlock,
                   //if so it enters this statement...
                   if(parentOne.get(i).getClass().toString().equals("class Timetable.CourseworkTimeBlock")){

    Any directions of other ways how to do this?
    Many Thanks
    Chris

    Unfortunately, I think you're stuck with a bunch of if-statements.
    Fortunately, I have some things that may help you.
    First, I usually make sure something is of x class via this
    if (someObject instanceof SomeClass) {So, I'd adjust your 'class checking' conditionals from this
    if(parentOne.get(i).getClass().toString().equals("class Timetable.CourseworkTimeBlock"))to this
    if (parentOne.get(i) instanceof Timetable.CourseworkTimeBlock) {Secondly, your code logic is kind of confusing.
    Why do you have a for-loop that iterates through every CourseworkTimeBlock, if you then (within each possible iteration) check iteration+1 and iteration+2? What happens if those throw an ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException, or are null?

  • Is there better way to write SQl Insert Script

    I am running out of ideas while working on one scenario and thought you guys would be able to guide me in right way.
    So, the scenario is I have a Table table1 table1(fieldkey, DisplayName, type) fieldkey - pkey   This table have n number of rows. The value of fieldkey in nth row is n. So if we have 1000 record, then the last row has a fieldkey = 1000.
    Below is my sample data.
    Insert into table1 (FIELDKEY,DISPLAYNAME,TYPE) values
    (1001, 'COfficer',100);
    Insert into table1 (FIELDKEY,DISPLAYNAME,TYPE) values
    (1002, 'PData',100);
    Insert into table1 (FIELDKEY,DISPLAYNAME,TYPE) values
    (1003, 'EDate',100);
    Insert into table1 (FIELDKEY,DISPLAYNAME,TYPE) values
    (1004, 'PData',200);
    Insert into table1 (FIELDKEY,DISPLAYNAME,TYPE) values
    (1005, 'EDate',300);
    Insert into table1 (FIELDKEY,DISPLAYNAME,TYPE) values
    (1006, 'Owner',400);This way of inserting the row with hardcoded value of fieldkey was creating the problem when the same table was used by other developer for their own new functionality.
    So, I thought of using the max(fieldkey) +1 from that table and use it in my insert script. This script file runs every time during software installation.
    I thought of using count to see if the row with same displaytype and type exists in that table or not. If exisits do not insert new row, if not insert new row.
    It looks like i will have to query the count statement everytime before I insert the row.
    select max(fieldkey) +1 into ll_fieldkey from table1
    select count(*) into ll_count from table1 where display ltrim(upper(name)) = 'COFFICER' and type =100)
    if ll_count >0 then
    Insert into table1 (FIELDKEY,DISPLAYNAME,TYPE) values
    ( ll_fieldkey, 'COfficer',100);
    ll_fieldkey := ll_fieldkey +1
    end if;
    select count(*) into ll_count from table1 where display ltrim(upper(name)) = 'PData' and type =100)
    if ll_count >0 then
    Insert into table1 (FIELDKEY,DISPLAYNAME,TYPE) values
    ( ll_fieldkey, 'PData',100);
    ll_fieldkey := ll_fieldkey +1
    end if;
    ... and so on for all the insert statement. So, i was wondering if there is some better way to handle this situation of inserting the data.
    Thank you

    Hi !
    For check if the same display name and type already exists in table i would use Unique Key , but then again instead of if statement you should code some exception handlers. ... Hm .. Unque key is by may opinion better solution as
    codeing checks .
    For faster inserts that is , smaller code .. if there is no rules for values and the values are fixed , in any case you have to do this 100 inserts. If you can "calculate" values then maybe you can figure out some code .. but effect will be the same as hundred insert stetements one after another .. Procedure with this 100 inserts is not so bad solution.
    You can fill with values a nested table and then use forall ... save exceptions insert and with above mentioned UK , maybe this will be better.

  • Is there a better way to do this with Flash?

    I am new to Flash but am slowly teaching myself via Lynda.com etc
    I have an image that I have added to a website via a content management system and want to make certain areas of that image into links to other sites.
    I found this page that does the kind of thing I want to do, but it appears from looking at the source code that the person who has done this has cut the image up into several sections in order to fit it into a table: http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/staffdevelopment/postdocs1/guidance
    Is there a better way to achieve the same kind of effect using Flash by making ares of an image into links and keeping the image as a whole?

    There are ways to keep the image whole and have portions of it linking to different places both in HTML and in Flash.  In HTML you can use an image map.  In Flash, you can just lay invisible buttons atop the image and use those to link.

  • When I share a file to YouTube, where does the output file live? I want also to make a DVD. And is this a best practice or is there a better way?

    I want also to make a DVD, but can't see where the .mov files are.

    I would export to a file saved on your drive as h.264, same frame size. Then import that into youtube.
    I have never used FCP X to make a DVD but I assume that it will build the needed vob mpeg 2 source material for the disk.
      I used to use Toast & IDVD. Toast is great.
    To "see" the files created by FCP 10.1.1 for YouTube, rt. (control) click on the Library Icon in your Movies/show package contents/"project"/share.

  • Is there any better way for updating table other than this?

    Hi all, I need to update a row in the table that require me to search for it first (the table will have more than hundred thousands of row). Now, I am using a LOV that will return the primary key of the row and put that primary key to DEFAULT_WHERE property in the block and execute query command to fetch the row that need updating. This works fine except that it require 2-query-trip per update (the lov and the execute_query). Is there any better way to doing this? This update is the main objective for my application and I need to use the most effective way to do it since we need to update many records per hour.

    Thanks Rama, I will try your method. Others, how to query row instead of primary key? I thought that querying primary key is faster due to the index?
    BTW, what people do if you need to update a table using Form? I have been using the LOV then execute query since I first developing form. But I am building a bigger database recently that I start worrying about multiple query trip to dbms.
    FYI my table will have up to million rows on it. Each row will be very active (updated) within 1-2 weeks after it creation. After that it will exist for records purposes only (select only). The active rows are probably less than 1% of all the rows.

  • After I open and read an email how do I get back to email.  I am closing the open email then having to go back to the home screen and then reopen the mail app.  There has to be a better way.

    After I open and read an email using my mail app, how do I get back to the email app to open an read others.  I am closing the email open, going back to the home screen and reopening the mail app every time.  There's got to be a better way to do this.

    If you are using the iPad in portrait mode, swipe from left to right in order to bring up the preview window of your emails again.

  • Is it possible to recreate this effect on FCP or Motion?

    Hi there, I'm attempting to recreate this multi luma key effect on FCP but it is proving diffucult? Are there any methods for this to work on either FCP or Motion?
    Thanks in advance,

    Yeah - it's possible, but not without some trickery.
    First download and install this:
    http://sight-creations.com/fxexchange/LumaFill.zip
    if you need installation instructions, go here: http://sight-creations.com/install4fcpx/  (this is an Effect).
    You need greenscreen media. Apply the Keyer to the greenscreen footage. After the Keyer, apply Luma Fill. Select the Drop Zone source well and click on the clip you want to place inside the "person" (or whatever's left of the green screen). (The drop zone source can be from the event browser OR from the storyline [or connected clip -- and you can "hide" clips underneath the storyline.])
    Place a generator or another clip (or clips) beneath the clip to serve as a background.
    Adjust the Luma Fill with the Levels control -- drag the White Point down towards the black to "open it up". Or adjust the gamma (grey/middle control) upwards to create a mix (and try some of the other parameter controls as well.)
    [this greenscreen footage also has tracking marks... ]
    You can also use this effect (without a keyer) on "plain" (non-greenscreen) media and with or without drop zone media -- it's a cool way to add a mix of Black & White over whatever you place the clip. [Add drop zone media for a 3-way mix.]
    [stockfootage from BottledVideo.com and HollywoodCameraWork.us (greenscreen media)]
    PS - if FCPX "freaks" a little (doesn't show the effects in the video pane) simply select the transform icon under the left corner of the view, then click the Done button (that's all you need to do -- the effects should reappear in the Video inspector.) I didn't notice any adverse effects beyond that.

  • I've created a key frame effect in FCP but it dissapears along with the moving object in my layer after rendering, how do I fix this?

    I'm creating a titles sequence with Final Cut Pro. In two instances I've put an object in the time line and moved it using keyframes and motion. Before I render the file is still on the layer and visible while scanning the footage with the playhead. However as soon as I render the file dissapears while playing. The object is still listed on the timeline, but is basically invisible when I play the rendered footage. This has happened twice on my timeline. I wish I could explain this any better, but to be honest I've never seen this before and I have no better way to describe it. Other than my object just simply disappears after I render it. Hope you can help. Thank you.

    You want your scratch disk to be set externally to a drive with a minimum of a FW800 connection.  Is that what you have?  (I understand you moved it during the troubleshooting process)
    You haven't turned off Clip Enable have you? Right click the text file and make sure Clip Enable is checked.  Or have you  disabled the track with the green button to the left on the track?
    I can't say I've seen this behavior from FCP.  Maybe someone else has and they can shed some light on the situation.
    I wouldn't use HQ even for a Canon 5D. I use ProRes(LT)  RED or Arri Alexa now we talking big sensors that would take advantage of HQ.  Assuming that the project will be exhibited on a system that would show you the differences.

  • "Automation" is too manual - is there a better way?

    I'm using automation to apply different effects (echo, reverb, etc) at various points in my track - but I can't believe I have to keep doing the same thing manually every time I want to change effects at each point. Is there a better way to apply the same automation of effects to various points (or regions) in the track?
    Thanks in advance!

    OMG...HangTime - you saved me a TON of work...THANKS!!!
