A bit more pondering...

Here's a reply from a previous post of mine that has now been locked.
"Well it does (and not so well). You can export files to any output color space meaning any CMYK profile you have installed on your Mac. Not different from Photoshop expect you have NO control over rendering intent, you don’t have half the necessary soft proof options, the sharpening isn’t very useful and you end up with a file sized at 72ppi. IOW, Aperture tries to do some prepress work (it involves itself with CMYK) but does it in a crippled way compared to Photoshop. So unless I’m misunderstanding your definition of “prepress”, Aperture is making the attempt but not in a very robust way.
If that were not the case, they would only allow rendering and encoding into a few RGB working spaces like Adobe Camera RAW (something based on the above comments they probably should have done)."
OK... here's my rant...
Leave the prepress work to Illustrator, InDesign or Quark. Have you ever delivered a Photoshop file to a professional print shop and have the technician/craftsman scream at you. I'm sure all those print pros just loved it when all the advertising agencies, magazines, graphic design firms fired or laid off their prepress/production artists and dumped all that work on to us photographers!
I can just hear those ad execs saying... "Hey look, photographers use Photoshop, let's make them do all the work! We'll save money by laying off whole departments of people, and hey... ya' know, those photographers won't charge us for the extra work we're gonna make them do! Yippee... free money!"
The print shop pros just shook their heads, broke out the bottles of whiskey and cringed every time we walked into their doors and begged them to give us an education on how to set up digital files for offset printing.
End of rant...
What Aperture should do and does, is offer us a way to print our images and by far (this is a big assumption I'm making) most of us print to ink-jet or some sort of direct digital print made at a professional photolab. These prints are made from RGB files, not CMYK files.
As far as the 72ppi export, who cares what your ppi is. As long as you don't change the pixel dimension, you can make the ppi anything you want. Why did Apple choose 72ppi, who knows, only they do and it doesn't matter.
Ranting about to begin again....
My whole point is that Photoshop is the real crippled application here. And I hope that Aperture doesn't become one also. Why does Adobe give me kerning in Photoshop? Huh... really why do I need kerning in Photoshop? Why does Photoshop allow me to choose how to set up a block of text in a paragraph and allow me to center it, justify it right or left. Why do I need to have a pen tool to allow me to make paths and cut out a portion of the image and paste it into/onto another image? A slice tool? An extract tool, swatches... oh yeah... gotta love those! All those prepress/production tools... man I tell you, they really help me run my business of taking pictures and moving them out the door to make room for the next client coming tomorrow morning. Boy and how!
Some time ago, in about 1993 or 1994 when Photoshop was a 3.0, a little company put out a nifty little Photoshop plugin called... Collage? (I think that was the name, if I'm wrong, will someone please correct me) This plugin allowed Photoshop to have layers and you could in a very real sense create excellent composites in a very easy manner. The first person who told me about this was a graphic designer, not a photographer, and he was unbelievably excited about this! Adobe soon released Photoshop 3.5 with built in layers and the entire commercial art industry went bananas! Everyone loved it, still loves it and I do too!
So Adobe started building Photoshop to play nice with art directors and graphic designers. And it still plays nice with photographers too. But don't you just wish that Adobe could've made Photoshop just for us photographers. You can't blame them, they gave us what the market asked for. And to be honest... the digital photography revolution didn't really start until just a few years ago. How could they have know this 10, 12 or ahhh... 3 years ago when we were all still shooting film.
So... again I believe that Aperture is one of the first attempts at creating a complete digital photography workflow solution and I believe that Apple has truly done their homework, paid attention to the way most of us work and given us a product that truly shines.

I think Aperture is pretty incredible for wedding work! It's not perfect but it's the best I've used for my workflow and my camera/shooting style are apparently well suited to its RAW processing.

    I think Apple should be a bit more cautionary about iCloud and privacy.  My family shares the same iCloud account as we all enjoy the music we collectively purchase on iTunes; we paid Apple for this feature with some kind of grouped account.  We didn't know, however that this joins our devices so that iMessages, contacts, pictures and just about everything else is shared too.  The unprivate default seems to be to share everything between all devices vs. to allow access by exception or by choice (or by password?).  Sure, when my kids get all my texts I can go figure out why and fix it but that is in my mind the antithesis of privacy and could be quite embarrassing for any family.  I guess it is good for stalking the kids or parents though if they don't know about the partyline approach to privacy.  Maybe a tech solution would be to have the iPhone show somehow the extent of its audience to its user.

    No argument from me about the vagaries of using and sharing Apple IDs.  This can lead to unintended consequences, especially in a family situation.
    If you're sharing the same ID for FaceTime, you might want to go to Settings>FaceTime, tap the ID, sign out, then sign in with separate IDs there too.  Otherwise, you'll end up getting each other's FaceTime calls.
    Also, if you need to migrate everyone's devices to separate iCloud accounts to keep your synced data separated, you can do this by saving any photo stream photos you wish to keep to your camera roll (unless already there) by opening your my photo stream album, tapping Select, tapping the photos, tap the share icon (box with upward facing arrow), then tapping Save to Camera Roll.  If you are syncing notes with iCloud, you'll need to open each of your notes and email them to yourself so you can later copy and paste the text into new notes created in your new account.  Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account (which only deletes it from this device, not from iCloud), choose Keep on My iDevice and provide the password to turn off Find My iPhone.  Then sign back in with a different Apple ID to create your new account and choose Merge to upload your data.  Once everyone's devices are on separate accounts, you can go to icloud.com and delete each other's data from your accounts.

    I bought my Photoshop Extended (PC) last year in the US. I have been using it for a bit more than a year. Today, opening Photoshop, Adobe asks me to pay or enter my serial number. So I enter the number (again), and it says that the number is invalid.
    My version is an official version, I paid for it.
    What I am supposed to do now ?

    Just wondering if there's any way I can get a little bit more speed from my line; Purely because although the speed I'm getting now is fine, I am just curious to see what could be done to perhaps make it a bit faster?

    Maybe I am just being hopeful but I have snapped 2000+ pics with my iphone and now it seems to be a bit more stable on images....
    Any thoughts?

  • Why does H.264 export with a bit more orange color than anything else?

    this is really annoying, I export some footage that was AVCHD footage, as an mpeg 2 file and it looks great like it should, and then I export to H.264 to upload to the web and there is a bit more of an orange colored tint to it, its mostly noticeable when you see red in the image because it looks more orange than its supposed to, and I didn't put any color correcting effects on at all!
    Please help me figure this out and fix it!

    yikes....good question.
    hard to answer really...except to cut a long story short...
    In this case your end product is youtube. think of that as your "printer" connected to your computer.
    When you output to your printer, if it looks too "orange" or whatever, you can calibrate your monitor to more exactly "match" what the printer is printing..
    To do THAT you hold a print up to your monitor and match the colors of the image you printed on your monitor....most people use color swatches and grayscales and so on....to get a wide range of the color values , gamma, etc.
    soooo, you make your monitor look like the print....and NOW you can use your color adjustments in the program being used ( editor, photoshop, etc ) and really see more accurately what you will get when you make a print.
    In THIS case it's not a print from your printer, but a picture from YouTube.....
    Soooo, what you want to do is look at the YouTube video product ( on the web ) and adjust your monitor in the PROGRAM ( cs5) to match what the product is....the YouTube video....
    Once you have the same orange color you see in YouTube product as you see in CS5 project monitor, you can NOW adjust your colors to the way you want them to match...
    It's really the same sort of calibration that happens with all color related stuff and is NOT a problem with cs5 or YouTube...it's just a matter of matching the product (output and viewing ) to the creator of that image color etc...so that future products will be what you expect.
    and that's the "short" answer...hehe...but it works
    sooo, unfortunately you probably don't have all the equipment and tools to make that happen easily... ( color spaces , LUT , icc profiles , whatever....)  and you will have to export, upload, look, adjust as needed ....   that's the fastest for what you are using probably.

    My iPhone 5 looks a bit different. The screen seems to be a bit more wider and a bit taller. I've used many cases including a knock-off LifeProof. After taking off the knock-off Lifeproof, this is where my phone started to look different.

  • Wish Safari was a bit more like Firefox...

    I mean when I need to work on bookmarks, can't it open the 'show all bookmarks' window in a page I'm not looking at on the web? Ok, I can do that by holding command down but honest, would it be so hard to have it open up into a new page or tab automatically?
    And what about the possibility of breaking the bookmarks flyout into sections like I can do with Firefox...I'm talking about just the ability to put in some dotted lines between bookmark folders that appear in the book marks menu and bar...is there a way to do that that I'm not aware of? This way I can say divide folders with bookmarks for music related links into a section, art related links into another...just a visual divider so the bookmarks menu isn't one long gigantic list of folders...
    okokok, maybe i'm asking for too much...forgive this wild charade, i'll try not to let it happen again...

    Oh, one other thing...I also wish Safari was more like Firefox in how it handles color...I rarely use Safari these days cause I'm using a wide gamut monitor and having these neon greens and reds all over is quite hard on the eyes...
    I've read about how Safari is color managed, I just don't think it works as well as the Firefox has color managed its browser...
    I'd love to go back to using Safari a bit more...maybe Mr. Jobs can put a word in for me?...

    No, you cannot get your money back.
    If you have tried the basics restart, reset, restore, then make an appointment at the genius bar.  If the iphone is defective then they will replace it.

  • Compressor, squeezing out a bit more quality for DVD?

    The original master was XDCam EX bumped to ProRes 4:2:2 HQ.  Then straight to Compressor.
    I'm wondering if there is a way to squeeze out a bit more quality than the default setting in Compressor.  My movie is only 50 minutes.  The DVD holds 4.5 gigs of course.  The default settings in Compressor for the shortest DVD (90 minutes) render the movie out at 2.6 gigs.
    I've jacked up the .m2v 'quality' to 6.6 Average bit rate and 7.8 Maximum bit rate.
    I've set the Dolby ac.3 at 448 kbps (the default is 192 - I'm wondering if I'm going to be creating problems for myself later by doing this?).
    So I'm curious to know if anyone has found a way to get a cleaner final DVD from Compressor by tweaking the default settings?
    I'll be using DVD Studio Pro to author the DVD.

  • Making hair look a bit more like hair?

    I have an illustration of a person and want to make goatee appear a bit more texturized instead of appearing look a simple shape filled with a color. My illustration is not anywhere near photo real, I just want the goatee to seem to have strands of hair, etc.
    What are some ways I can do this?

    Try creating a symbol of a few squirrels of hair, then use the "Scatter" brush to spray a bunch of them in the area of the hair.  You may have to "Expand" the artwork to modify the individual elements.  Check out some of the Illustrator tutorial sites online, use keywords: Illustrator tutorials.

  • VOLUME I need a bit more

    Just purchased some new in ear phones for my iPod Touch and they need just a bit more volume on some music.
    I assume the Touch cannot drive my new ones as well the old ones.
    I wish there was a way to make your own EQ rather than select from the list, both options would be good, pick one or make one.....
    I suppose they are keeping it down to stop ear damage, but some out here maybe a bit harder of hearing than others and need a bit more...............

    Right clicking the song>get info>options>volume adjustment...
    I assume the gain in volume is then saved into the track so will stay that way when copied over to the Touch.
