A bit of evangelizing about Motion 3

I was invited to a small event in Santa Monica with the Motion developers - a sort of Motion 3 roll out. Trish and Chris Meyer were there, JJ Franzen of South Park Studios was there, among others. There were several demo rooms set up and we were treated to demos of new features along with face time with the actual engineers who wrote the features being demoed.
First of all, though it will be focused on by everyone, 3d was only one aspect of the improvements. Tracking, Speed changes, Filters/Generators, Integration, Audio are some of the other new facets of Motion 3.
Although it's been portrayed as being lifted from Shake, the new tracker in Motion was written from scratch. It has some nifty features, like the ability to suggest tracking points, the ability to track a set of pixels even if they rotate from their original position. And you can do the typical tracking things, like stabilize or match motion or cornerpin.
Motion 3 allows you to alter the speed of clips with the standard "nearest neighbor" or frame blending, but it also will create new frames using optical flow analysis. Motion 3 does borrow code from Shake for its optical flow retiming. The addition of this speed change ability allows Motion to properly recognize speed changed clips when they're passed in from FCP.
The Audio changes are very cool - you can set any parameter to be affected by not only the audio volume, but audio changes as well (which is pretty close to a "beat detector"). Additionally, you can select different bands of frequencies to affect parameters. They had one demo where bass affected the birthrate of a particle emitter and the higher frequencies affected a drag behavior. I can imagine adding an audio track to a projectthat will never be heard just to trigger events in a natural rhythmic way.
There are new Filters (Bad TV is one fun one) and generators. Motion 3 finally has a grid generator - and a very nice one at that.
The integration with FCP is something that will be SO handy. Basically, you can design and save a template in Motion, during which you will mark specific text and graphics that will be accessible from within FCP. Then in FCP, you can cut in this template, then type in the text (just as though it was a Text Generator), drop any new graphics in their respective drop zones - and voilå! So credit sequences, lower thirds, all that kind of stuff becomes INFINITELY easier. You don't have to have umpteen jillion separate Motion projects, just a template. AND if you make changes to the template, it will instantly be reflected in your sequences, unlike the difficult route of propagating a change to many separate motion project files.
OH! Content... To quote one of the engineers, there is a METRIC TON of new content in Motion 3 - little things like widgets, gauges, bar graphcs, etc - you can throw together a mock HUD or cockpit display in about 20 seconds. Along with brushes, shapes, etc...
And I haven't even touched on the Paint capabilites - but a tidbit - when you use a tablet to paint, Motion records the timing and pressure so when it plays back, it mimics your timing exactly...
I could go on and on, but I'll stop there for now...
AMAZING - the difference between Motion 1 and 2 was nothing compared to the quantum leap that is Motion 3. I was there for 4+ hours and could've stayed for 4 more.
Have fun!
Patrick

Motion 3 finally has a grid generator -
and a very nice one at that.
For anyone stuck with Motion 2 still, it does have a (crude) Grid generator already if you know where to look. Just apply the checkerboard generator, apply the Edges filter under the Stylize sub menu, and adjust to your liking. Perfect? Hardly. Workable? In several of my projects at least.
Thanks for the very cool update though Patrick. Sounds like the event was fun!
Peace,
-Harry

  • HT4865 So who believes Apple should be a bit more cautionary about the sharing of iMessages and other content when several members of a family share the same iCloud account and unknowing can audit each other's iMessages, Contacts, and god only knows what

I think Apple should be a bit more cautionary about iCloud and privacy.  My family shares the same iCloud account as we all enjoy the music we collectively purchase on iTunes; we paid Apple for this feature with some kind of grouped account.  We didn't know, however that this joins our devices so that iMessages, contacts, pictures and just about everything else is shared too.  The unprivate default seems to be to share everything between all devices vs. to allow access by exception or by choice (or by password?).  Sure, when my kids get all my texts I can go figure out why and fix it but that is in my mind the antithesis of privacy and could be quite embarrassing for any family.  I guess it is good for stalking the kids or parents though if they don't know about the partyline approach to privacy.  Maybe a tech solution would be to have the iPhone show somehow the extent of its audience to its user.

No argument from me about the vagaries of using and sharing Apple IDs.  This can lead to unintended consequences, especially in a family situation.
If you're sharing the same ID for FaceTime, you might want to go to Settings>FaceTime, tap the ID, sign out, then sign in with separate IDs there too.  Otherwise, you'll end up getting each other's FaceTime calls.
Also, if you need to migrate everyone's devices to separate iCloud accounts to keep your synced data separated, you can do this by saving any photo stream photos you wish to keep to your camera roll (unless already there) by opening your my photo stream album, tapping Select, tapping the photos, tap the share icon (box with upward facing arrow), then tapping Save to Camera Roll.  If you are syncing notes with iCloud, you'll need to open each of your notes and email them to yourself so you can later copy and paste the text into new notes created in your new account.  Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account (which only deletes it from this device, not from iCloud), choose Keep on My iDevice and provide the password to turn off Find My iPhone.  Then sign back in with a different Apple ID to create your new account and choose Merge to upload your data.  Once everyone's devices are on separate accounts, you can go to icloud.com and delete each other's data from your accounts.

    Thanks for the reply.
I checked the link that I posted back in post 3 of your thread. It is working with at least Firefox and Chrome.
ATR Premiere Elements Troubleshooting: PE12: Motion Tracking/What To Use To Track Object?
    What browser are you using?
The blog post contains significant information related to Premiere Elements 12 Motion Tracking. But, if you cannot access it for some reason, then we will need to troubleshoot via communications in the thread.
SG has asked if you are able to create Motion Tracking effect using one of the graphics included with the program. We will watch for your response to him on that question. Please include in your message to him whether you can obtain your file to track the object using Organizer Tab or Project Assets routes as well as Graphics Tab.
The following is an excerpt from the blog post referenced....
    SOLUTION
Various tutorials and online comments have pointed to places other than Graphics Tab where objects can be selected and used to track the moving object in the video when the Motion Tracking workspace is opened in the Expert or Quick workspace.
Organizer Tab, Expert or Quick workspace to access Elements Organizer 12. Cascade Windows and drag a video or photo from Elements Organizer into the yellow track box of Motion Tracking workspace.
Project Assets, Expert workspace. Drag text, video, or photos from opened Project Assets into the yellow track box of Motion Tracking workspace.
Graphics Tab, Expert or Quick workspace. Create a png file (graphic) or prtl file (text) and place it in Clip Arts in the Program Files of the program to have a permanent resource. Then from Graphics Tab, drag the newly created graphic or text object into yellow track box of Motion Tracking workspace.
    Thanks.

  • Running Logic in 64-bit but what about Snow Loepard?

    Hi all,
I am wondering what the benefit is of running Logic in 64-bit if you only run Snow Leopard in 32-bit. Is there better performance when you run both Logic and the OS in 64-bit?

    Mike Connelly wrote:
The only thing that is still 32 bit is the kernel itself. If you're on 64 bit hardware, you're already running the OS in 64 bit.
64 bit kernel may boost performance a little more, but from tests run it looks like it will be a pretty tiny difference.
That is because we are looking at "word length", not sample rate...
ie one 64 bit piece of info is more detailed than a 32 bit, but takes just as long to go through the motherboard... therefore the small increase in performance.
I for one cannot go to 64 bit since I use 3rd party plug ins a lot... and none of them are 64 bit yet, except for Omnisphere.

  • A bit of information about the iSync plugin for th...

Several 3rd party developers have confirmed that something is broken in the way the N97 communicates via the iSync plugin. Nokia has changed, incorrectly implemented, or out right made something wrong and a firmware upgrade is DRASTICALLY needed or a plugin will NEVER work. The problem started with Nokia and ends with Nokia. They need to fix the problem with the N97. The developers feel that unless Nokia fixes this problem there will never be a plugin for the N97. It is as simple as that.
This is all the info that I have at the moment. For the time being the only way to sync your data is:
    1. Prepare all of your data the way you want on your phone and then us Ovi. This can be a problem too as Ovi is not that great and is not very stable.
    2. You can use Memotoo (www.memotoo.com) to sync your data via SyncML. I have used tried it and it works okay. Better than Ovi for sure but it costs.
    3. You can use The Missing Sync by Mark Space (www.markspace.com - currently testing). It does not use the same way to sync via iSync plugins. The Missing Sync sends a plugin to your phone instead. The syncing is very stable and works flawlessly. The only drawback is that the phone plugin is not exactly designed for the N97 and it requires that the N97 needs to be reboot sometimes to sync. Other than this, the operation is flawless and it appears that Mark Space will be able to fix this one problem faster than Nokia will be able to fix their phone.
    Hope this helps......

  • A bit of Advice about iwork and office

Sorry if this is maybe the wrong forum, but it was to 'general' for the iwork forum. I am going to purchase a macbook and of course i am going to work for school with it. Now I have one problem. As a Windows user I can only work with office so iwork would be new to me. And sometimes I got to make projects with my calssmates - All ( like me )poor windows users. So what would you advice me to go for iWork, MSOffice or Open Office ?
    JTC

Stick to microsoft office. The macbook comes with a free 14 day (almost positive that it's that long) for both Office and iWork. No one can beat Microsoft Office because everyone already uses it and Office on the mac works seamlessly with pc's when transfering files. Also, with the purchase of office, you get 3 licences so you would be able to split the cost of it with 3 people/3 different computers. I have been using Macs for years and Microsoft Office works very well on the mac and you would easily be able to work with your students without worrying about compatibility problems.
I am sure Apple's iWork is great (obviously keynote is excellent) but depending on what you wish to do, Office might just be the easier solution.
If you look at the reviews of iWork you will notice many people love it, mostly for Keynote, and say that Pages needs work.

  • About Motion

Hi everybody, my question is, how can I make a freeze frame or still image in motion, I know How to do it in Final Cut, But I don't find the way in motion.
    Some Help?

Or if you really wanted to get complicated you could keep the frame on the canvas, open up grab, take a screen-shot of the canvas, then edit/crop the image in Photoshop.
Attempted point is there's many ways to do it but Export/Current Frame is probably the easiest.

  • Bit of Advice about FTTC cabinets

    Hi all,
In my village we have all had FTTC cabinets installed, which is great however every cabinet has been powerd on and is accepting orders apart from the one that serves my property, it is cabinet no 19 and my post code is SG8 5JX.
I checked the BT wholesale checker and still tells me can only get up to 1.5 meg.
Anyone have any idea why it taking so long to switch on one cabinet or any more information on when it be turned on
    Thanks
    Paul D

most likely reason is that all testing openreach do before the cab goes live has not yet been completed just a matter of waiting the wholesale checker will advise you of the date your cab should go live all you can do is keep checking

  • 64 bit motion control ready now?

I recently upgraded LabVIEW to 2010 64bit. Then it turned out the previous motion control VIs don't function in 2010 64bit version. The error points to the failure to load "FlexMotion32.dll". It makes sense, apparently that DLL file is 32-bit.
I did a search on ni.com about FlexMotion. This page http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/3753 illustrates that "FlexMotion32.dll" is required for the communication between LabVIEW and motion controller board. Tried to find if "FlexMotion64.dll" is available, but it doesn't seem it exist yet.
So my question is how I can update the motion control to 64 bit.

  • Advice About Switching To Motion

    Hi all,
Just wanted some advice, I'm coming from Adobe products like Premiere and After Effects and wanted to know if the Mac products were just as good and you can achieve everything you can in After Effects? If someone could let me know the best Mac packages to buy would be much appreciated...
    Cheers!

I can't speak about Premiere Pro 2.0, the last version I used was 1.0. Let it also be said that I learned on FCP, so naturally, I'm going to prefer that. Although, Premiere does has a very similar interface, at least when compared to other NLEs like Avid or Vegas.
I used Premiere 6.5 and Premiere Pro 1.0 on my personal PC before I switched over to Mac. 6.5 had numerous incompatbility problems with my hardware (liked to magically reboot my computer when playing back audio recorded at 32Khz). And it was a memory hog. Pro 1.0 was a pretty big upgrade, but still had stability and performance issues for me. On a comprable Mac, FCP was always more responsive and stable. Since I haven't used it in a while, I can't really compare the two feature-wise now.
As far as choosing a motion graphics package, it's going to depend entirely on your needs. Motion, After Effects, and Shake are three very different programs with different feature lists and workflow capabilities. If I had to personally choose, I would go with After Effects over Motion because of its 3d compositing and camera features. I feel like more can be done with AE. What I really like about Motion, though, is how fast things can be accomplished. It feels more like a sandbox, where animations and effects can be quickly drawn up and played back at full speed (with the right hardware). I think AE has tends to have a little more overhead (pre-comping and RAM rendering is a pain).
Shake is a wholly different beast than those other two. I really haven't had an opportunity to use it seriously, but Patrick would know more. From what I've seen it's really good at compositing elements together, creating mattes, doing motion tracking, keying, etc. It's more of a tool for live action footage and/or 3d footage. AE and Motion do a lot of that stuff, too, but also focus on 2d animation and motion graphics.
EDIT: Just wanted to mention that Shake has a steep learning curve. The interface is not the most user friendly.

  • Motion 2.1.2 crashes, quits unexpectedly, seemingly at random

Bear with me, as I am a relatively new Mac owner; however, I did try to first find, and read, all of the existing posts concerning this same topic, beforehand. I thank you in advance your input, and will mark this thread as "solved" or "helped" if we can get this issue resolved.
I have a Quad G5, running 10.4.8 with 2.5 Gb of RAM, and using the GeForce 6600 video card. In the FCP suite of programs, I have had no problems running Final Cut or DVD Studio (can't say I have found a use for Soundtrack Pro yet).
Motion, on the other hand, has crashed a great deal, and with baffling irregularity. It often aborts on loading (I'd say about 1 out of every 5 of 6 tries to open the problem). Sometimes it crashes when I try to create a new project or open an existing one. In order to dedicate my resources to Motion, I have been closing all other programs before launching.
Other times, I have been working in Motion, and it terminates unexpectedly. This has yet to happen when working with text (unlike many others who have posted here about Motion crashing). Also, I am not using any 3rd party filters. Two of the most recent crashes happened after trying to apply the Basic 3D filter to a replicated object. Another crash occurred when I tried to play a 10 second clip I was working on, with the Light Streaks 1.mov in one of the layers.
Following the advice on the motionsmarts site, I have checked the "fixed resolution" flag of each layer as I create them. I have also been keeping the projects at 8-bit Bit Depth.
The following are some of the header entries in the Motion crash log from the most recent abends:

    Quad G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   2.5 Gb RAM, nVIDIA GeForce 6600

Finally placed a call with Apple support, and they also recommended trashing my preferences. I tried to do that before, but I was apparently looking in the wrong directory (whoops). The correct library is user -> library -> preferences and then the file is "com.apple.motion.plist", just in case others are looking in the wrong location.
I am going to leave this question as unanswered for now, because I want to work with Motion for a few more days before I mark this as "solved". However, at this time, Motion has not crashed once, and I have been giving it a real workout.
The other recommendation from the tech, in case trashing the preferences doesn't work, was to remove the 2 Gb of RAM I added, and then use Motion for awhile. That will be my next step if Motion acts up any in the next few days of testing.
Some things to keep in mind if you are having the problem with Motion crashing:
    - Trash your preferences and then reboot
    - Try to remove any devices since the program last worked, and try Motion without them. If that works, then re-add those components and test Motion again.
    - Upgrade Motion AND the FCP suite (don't just upgrade Motion by itself).
    - Uninstall any 3rd party filters and test again.
These are just some of the recommendations the tech gave me. Like I've said, it looks like my problem has been resolved, but I'm not counting those chickens just yet. I will post again to this thread if it hasn't crashed in the next 5 -7 days.

  • Why motion menu bitrates can't be changed

When you click "Animate" buttons for a menu, this turns it into a motion menu. Encore renders all motion menus at 8 mbps, cannot be changed. This wastes a lot of space on the DVD if you have many motion menus.
All assets have Transcode Settings. Motion menus are the lone exception. Is there something special about motion menus that Transcode Settings couldn't be implemented? Is there a reason why motion menus must be rendered at 8 mbps while everything else can have different bitrates? Is there something technologically difficult for Adobe to make an option to have Transcode Settings for motion menus?

Please refer to your post in the Cow forum.
The best thing for you to do if you would like to have control over the bit rates that are used to transcode motion menus is to file a
    feature request
    here on the Adobe site.

  • Bit Rate and Encoding

    Hey y'all--
I've read all the posts about this, but can someone please give me a simple answer (if one exists)?
When I format (encode) my project, I would like to start with high settings then back-off when I run out of room on the DVD. The media (aside from Menus) is a series of 3min animated films (4 now, more later). My encode settings are as follows:
    FIELD ORDER: Auto
    MODE: Two Pass VBR
    BIT RATE: 5.0
    MAX BIT RATE: 7.5
    MOTION ESTIMATION: Best
Is this a good place to start or should I up the bit rate settings? I'm just looking for a benchmark.
    Thanks in advance.
    G4 Dual 1.25; 2gigs Ram   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Did you Google for a bitrate calculator as I suggested?
    http://www.videohelp.com/calc.htm
With an audio bitrate of 192kbps (i.e. Dolby Digital encoded by Compressor 2 or A.Pack), it tells me that 90 minutes of video should be encoded at an AVERAGE bitrate of 6.6Mbps to fill a single DVD-R.
If you want, you can do that as a constant bitrate encode of 6.6. You can also do a two-pass VBR encode with average of 6.6 and maximum of (say) 7.5 (because as David points out again, there are issues with high bitrate playback off of DVD-Rs).
If you want to get more on the disc, encoded at a lower average bitrate.
If you want to split it across two discs and encode everything at a high constant bitrate, you can do that too.
If you are going to get this disc REPLICATED and therefore not have the DVD-R playback issues, you can encode all video at 9.5Mbps and fit 40 minutes onto a DVD-5, or 80 minutes onto a DVD-9.
Or you can lower bitrates and resolutions dramatically and fit a lot more onto a single disc.
It completely depends on your project, your delivery requirements, and your quality requirements.

  • Where is the Motion 5.0.1 update?

I looked at the "About Motion" box to see what version I have. It says 5.0. I wondered if there was an update, so I started to search. 30 minutes later, I'm no closer than when I started.
The first obvious thing I did was choose Software Update from the Apple menu. It tells me that all of my software is up to date, so I decided to check further just out of curiostiy.
I found this page telling me what's new in Motion 5.0.1:
    http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/motion/id434290957?mt=12
I found this page with the Motion 5.0.1 release notes:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4591
When I go to the downloads page, all I see for Motion 5 is the Content update:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/#motion%205
So, what am I missing? Is there a 5.0.1? If so, where is it?
    Related questions...
Is there an automatic update option for Motion? I sure can't find one. It's easy to find that option on iTunes. If there isn't one for Motion, why not?
Yes, I'm a bit frustrated at this point (sorry). Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Bryce

Thanks, Karsten! I bought Motion 5 in June 2011, and that's the only time I've ever used the App Store, so I'd completely forgotten about that.
Maybe it's because I've only used the App Store once, but I'm confused and disoriented trying to navigate my way through it. I finally found what I'm looking for, but now I have a lot of other questions....however, those are for the App Store community.
Thank you for pointing me in the right direction!
