A bit slow

bootup is quite fast... then once I put my password in the GDM it seems slow in getting to the GUI... also looking in some folders take quite a bit of time to load...
any suggestions?

Try a Restart.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.

Ipod Seems a Bit Slow (Laggy?)

I have filled up my 60gb ipod a little over half of it with just music. It seems a bit slow now trying to explore through menus... is this normal? If not, how can I go about fixing or improving it? It's getting a bit tedious now because it's hard to distinguish what you are doing at times. Thanks.

Thats normal, the new 1.2 firmware slowed thing as down a tad with all its new features. I don't mind much, cause the new freaure were much needed (Like gapless playback). Unfortunaly there is no way to to make things run a little snappier. Or at least not anyway I have found.

Periodically delete all apps from the recently-used bar (double clickHome button) and power off and then back on the iPod. With iOS 5, the iPod uses more memory (do not confuse with storage) and periodically you have to reclaim memory for use.

MacBook getting a bit slow

Hi,
I have a 2008 white MacBook. In the beginning it was extremely quick (startup/shutdown/loading of apps) however as time has gone on it has become a bit slower in doing all these tasks.
I have upgraded the RAM to 4GB (from Crucial) and tbh I didn't find this to have done much even though the reviews/opinions of others suggested it would.
I now am thinking of upgrading the OS to snow leopard however am worried that this too may disappoint, plus im thinking it may be worth simply waiting for lion to come out in the summer.
Compared to the what the MacBook came with in the beginning it hasn't got that much installed on it (iWork, TomTom, Skype) so im a bit puzzled as to what could make it slower.
Anyone got any suggestion as to what I could do before I make any purchases?

Sounds like plenty of space on the hard drive. A full hard drive can slow down OSX.
I think more memory can slow down a computer on startup because it takes longer to test it. However, once started things go faster. May be wrong.
Probably some slow down due to having more files, etc. Computer needs to read and write items to cache and directory. Some run system-only partitions to get around having data files sharing same drive as system.
Try doing a bit of spring cleaning by starting up in Safe Mode, then restarting.

ITunes 10.1 (64-bit) slow performance

Hello all,
I have recently bought a new pc, a very fast machine (see details below), but I'm experiencing bad performance with iTunes 10.1 (64-bit) for windows.
I don't have a lot of stuff in iTunes, I have about 120 apps, 500 songs, 1200 photos, couple of ringtones and 0 videos in my library. The whole iTunes interface responds slowly. Like clicking on Music, Videos, my iPhone in the side menu makes iTunes freeze for a couple of seconds and then switches to the screen. Even after loading a screen iTunes is freezed for a seconds before it's responsive.
I've googled around for a while, and got some tips to disable some options in the preference window, so I've set all unnecessary things off, like: crossfadings songs, automatic update checking, looking for devices, automatic organizing, ping, genius, shared libraries, etc. but it doesn't speed up iTunes much.
It gets even worse whenever I connect my iPhone 3G (Fw 4.2.1, 16GB, Black). iTunes simply freezes for like half a minute and the pc makes a few beeping noises because of connecting an usb-device. Even Windows 7 slows down a lot while connecting. iTunes gets responsive once my iPhone appears under devices in the side menu.
Software I have constantly running in the backround are: AVG anti-virus free edition, SQL Server 2008, Steam and Skype. Turning off these softwares doesn't make a difference as well. There are no virusses or whatever on my pc. I let AVG anti-virus do a complete scan like once a week.
Taskmanager shows iTunes using about 240,000K of memory, followed by steam with 70,000k of memory and skype with 30,000k of memory.
Anyone else experiencing slow performance or know how to resolve this ?

Intel i7 950 @ 3.06GHz quad core processor
6gigs of ddr3 (1600mhz) memory
Ocz vertex2 ssd (The O/S and all music, photos, apps are on this disk)

Same with me! I recently bought a new laptop, and iTunes 9 was working just fine. It takes like 5 seconds to scroll down one line. Clicking on different tabs and things takes forever as well. I am not sure what is causing it yet, but like you, I have disabled all sorts of iTunes settings which has not helped yet. Hopefully Apple will fix this problem soon! Let me know if you find a way to solve this.

Fingerprint scanner on Win 7 64-bit slows machine

Brand New Tecra R840. Running Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit. Any ideas on how to make the fingerprint utility more responsive. There is a 3-10 second lag when trying to log in , or unlock the computer. It scans just fine, but the time between the computer accepting the scan and giving me the green check mark, and the computer unlocking is painfully slow.

Windows Vista 32-bit slow on MB Pro 13"

I just bought MacBook Pro 13” (2.53GHz, 4GB memory, 250GB HDD if it makes any difference), and I installed Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit on it followed by Boot Camp Windows drivers. I noticed that the Boot Camp drivers installation took unusually long time (I think definitely more than 15 minutes), but I did not pay too much attention to it, as I assumed that was lot of drivers and programs to install. But then I started noticing other problems. For instance, after the installation, there were over 60 Windows updates scheduled to download and install. First I was not even able to start the update process (it seemed to be stuck on 0KB and 0% forever), so I left it running for a long time. It eventually started (I don’t know precisely when because I was not there), but it took over an hour to download and install about 30 of them. At this point I attempted to stop it and restart the computer, but it got stuck on “Shutting down”.
Now, I decided to reinstall the machine completely to give it one more chance. It’s finishing now, but I don’t have high hopes for it, because this is the most standard installation process. I did not do anything special before, and I’m repeating the same steps now, so I would be surprised if something magically fixed it.
Is it some known problem? Should I try Windows XP or Windows 7?
Also, I noticed another glitch. At one point, I turned off Aero (windows composition), but I was not able to turn it back on. I tried the Theme manager, Performance settings and direct registry tweaking without any luck. Is there anything which is known to block Aero?

It seems that everything is in order, and that the problem was mostly on my side.
The slowness was caused by a huge update. The first update has apparently over 300MB (I guess it is a service pack), and since Windows Update updates the progress bar only when a complete package is downloaded, it appeared as if nothing was happening.
The problem with the Aero was caused by a low Windows Performance Index which was not presumably updated after I installed Boot Camp drivers. When I refreshed it manually, Windows was happy to turn Aero on. This does not explain, however, how I was able to turn on the Aero before ... In any case, it seems to be fixed now.

LR2 64-bit slower than 32-bit (Mac)

I ran a test a while back with Lightroom 1.3.1, generating 1:1 previews on a test directory of images:

On a Mac pro 2.8 GHz 8-core machine with 12GB of RAM, I found I could generate 211 1:1 previews for my directory in about 5:36, or 1.59 seconds/image.
I've found Lightroom 2, in 32-bit mode on the same machine, to run roughly the same speed.
However - running Lightroom 2 in 64-bit mode on this same machine takes 7:23, or 2.10 seconds per image. It's typically using >500% of CPU.
Why is it so much slower running 64-bit?

My results are repeatable; 1:1 preview generation takes about 30% longer using 64-bit than 32-bit. I opened a support ticket on this (case number 180331555) - here is the response from Adobe:
I understand that Lightroom# takes longer to render previews in 64-bit
mode than in 32-bit mode.
I am able to duplicate this basic behavior when rendering a relatively
small batch of previews in Lightroom.
It is not expected that all operations in 64-bit mode will perform
faster. Memory access generally takes longer in 64-bit mode due to
having to address a larger memory space.
Performance benefit should be most noticeable when performing operations
that use more than 4GB of memory. At this point, the 32-bit application
will experience a large performance penalty due to increased hard drive
access.
Hmm. Sounds like they were able to reproduce the behavior I see, but I can't think of why memory access should be slower in 64-bit.

My os is running a bit slow

On start up, my iMac takes a bit longer for all of the icons to show up on the desktop. Saving pictures from websites takes about 10 seconds, while the color pinwheel spins. This is a pretty recent event and i'm wondering if it has anything to do with the Maverics update.

Early 2011 15-inch MacBook pro running a tad bit slow

Had it for a while now and he's been treating me well, but all of a sudden the performance has started going a little wonky. Sometimes when I'm working, it'll just go black-screen (and stop playing music if I was playing any before) and then the login screen will show up, or it'll go to full on sleep where sometimes it'll respond if I press Enter a couple of times, but other times i'll have to close the clamshell and reopen it to be taken back to the login screen. Also, I get the rainbow pinwheel more often than I used to, for longer than I used to, for simple tasks like using Safari or opening Word or trying to access a menu or quit an app. Some apps will take a considerable time to open, and the icon just keeps a-bouncing in the dock until 20 years later when the app eventually opens. I've taken him into the Apple store and had them reset the SMC as that seemed to be the main problem all signs were pointing to. But the symptoms still remain, so I'm hoping I can find some help here from you all. I'm a broke college kid, so I'm not trying to drop huge bucks, but any little bit of info is greatly appreciated.

That's a hardware kernel panic for certain and it does look as if it was caused by a faulty GPU.
The only thing that I can really recommend is printing out the kernel panic and taking it and your machine into your local Apple Store/AASP. They can diagnose the problem and give you an estimate for repair (unless you purchased the extended AppleCare Protection Plan - in which case the repair should be free).

How do I change the settings so my computer doesn't time-out so quickly when I'm trying to send an e-mail and the internet's a bit slow?

I tried sending a smaller picture (about 300 kb) to some of my family members and before it got to them the computer timed out (very quickly, I might add) so it wouldn't send. We have fairly slow internet speed at times and when I was using XP, under tools there was a feature to increase the time so the computer didn't time out as fast. I had it set at about two minutes. I can't seem to find the same feature under tools in Windows8. I'd really like to be able to address this problem. Thanks for your help.

You could adjust the mailnews.tcptimeout preference, as explained in the 2nd point in [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Can_not_send_large_attachments this article]. Also, make sure there's no security program scanning outgoing mail attachments.
