A "broken folder" or prohibitory sign appears during startup.

Upgrade to 10.4 from 10.3 and now computer will not startup, but displays the broken folder icon. In addition, the DVD drive will not open to allow me to load the 10.4 DVD. I had to force open it with a paper clip to remove the DVD after upgrading. How can I fix this problem?

Son forced restart to C drive rather than second hard drive which had 10.4 installed on it. Used Command Option R-P while restarting until system restarts. DVD works. Restarted with 10.4 DVD in drive and erased second hard drive and installed full version of 10.4. Worked great.

  • Gray screen appears during startup

I have a later Mac Mini with 10.8.5. installed where the gray screen appears during startup. Have regularly backed up the disk except the last 2 days where I installed some important pictures which unfortunately were deleted on the camera.
Have now followed the following steps under support.apple.com/kb/TS2580
    1) Disconnect, test peripheral devices and network cables
    Didn't solve the problem
    2) Perform a Safe Boot
    Didn't solve the problem
    3) Reset the NVRAM/PRAM
A menu showed up , I checked the disk, didn't show any problems
Then I restarted the Mac and the same problem showed up.
What's the suggestion for next step and minimizing the risk of deleting the pictures which I don't have backup on ?
    Help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Help replaced a kext file and now I get a Prohibitory Sign and cant startup

I replaced my iovideo family.kext file trying to fix my non working dvi output. I replaced it with one from my mbp 15 because that one worked fine now I cant start up my mbp17 I get the Prohibitory Sign???

If you kept a copy of the original file, you can use the terminal to copy it back.
You should be able to boot into the Leopard DVD using the "C" on boot and get into the single user mode to do this.
If you have a TM backup, you can boot into the Leopard DVD and restore the entire OS from the backup.

  • Security Agent is suddently appearing during startup and on my desktop

    Hello,
So recently, during startup while my login/password page is loading, I'll see "Security Agent" appear in the upper left corner of my screen. Then ususally, maybe a half hour to an hour after I've started up, it appears on my dock, running. I can quit from the dock that's the only option I have. It will usually reappear randomly after that throughout the day.
Anyone have any ideas of what this is all about?
    thanks,
    Tucky

    Hello,
Actually "Security Agent" is part of the OS. Here's a apple developers page explaining. http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Security/Conceptual/SecurityOverview/Architecture/chapter_2_section5.html
I just don't understand why a normally invisble operation is suddently appearing out in my desktop.
You can read my computer stats below. But in case you can't I'm on an aluminum power book running 10.4.7
    thanks

  • Apple sign appears during a call iPhone 3Gs

During a call the phone freezes and the apple symbol appears, phone will not reset, by holding down any of the buttons, then after about 5 mins the screen appears again. Has been happening occasionally over the past month.

    Hi there,
This could be a number of things, does it do it EVERY call and after a certain time? Do you regularly quit your multitasking applications to ensure the iPhone is not running too much.
You should also ensure you have the latest software on the phone (4.3.2) by updating and then testing. If the issue occurs after doing that it may be time for a Genius appointment at your local Apple Store. Is the phone still in warranty? Does it seem to be hotter?

  • Question mark appears during startup

i recently got a new hard drive installed and now every time i start up my macbook, a blinking question mark within a folder appears for a second or two before the apple logo. dont notice any difficulties or symptoms of problems, but i remember the blinking question mark from when my hard drive crashed . wondering if it is something i should be concerned about. what is causing this? thanx

It means your computer is having problems finding a valid operating system from which to start. Have you set your new hard drive as the startup drive in system preferences? I think it is looking someplace else first before going through the standard list of alternative places to look and then finding the drive.
I'm not sure but his may also be something that would require: [Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379]

  • No apple logo appears during startup

I am fixing this 2007 iMac for free for an autistic child. Apparently, changing computers for someone that is autistic isn't ideal. I don't have the history with this iMac, just that it isn't working. They supposedly did have the hard drive replaced? It sounds like a dvd is inside it when it starts up, could be the installation dvd?
Either way, I have not seen it before where the Apple logo refuses to show on the start up screen. It just stays gray.
    1. I've tried zapping the PRAM. Didn't have any changes.
    2. I tried starting up in safe mode, but getting passed the apple logo is required for that
    3. I tried single user mode, but getting passed the apple logo is required for that
    4. I tried holding the c key to start up off of the dvd, nothing happens
    5. I tried holding the mouse button (and cmd, opt, f, o) to manually eject the dvd during start-up.
Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Sounds like you've tried the conventional approach to removing a stuck CD/DVD. Not tried this myself, but there is this possibility (at your own risk, of course ):

  • Gray screen with Apple logo and spinning gear appears during startup

I followed the steps outlined in order in Apple Support by disconnecting all peripheral devices, performing a safe boot, and resetting the NVRAM / PRAM. Nothing changed - the gray screen still appeared when restarting the computer. Next I tried bringing up the Mac OS X Install disc using Disk Utility. I was able to get into Disk Utility but it would not allow me to click "Repair Disk" for the hard drive. I could only select "Verify Disk". So I did that then and the results in red were as follows:
    -Invalid node structure
-The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaiired.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
So this is where I'm at, unsure as exactly how to proceed from here. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Well I tried entering in (after the "umount/dev/") disk0s1, disk0, disk1, disk2 etc. all to no avail. So I'm just recopying below exactly what shows up on screen in the Terminal once I enter "df" so that maybe you can better detect that way what my volume should be. Thanks David!

  • TS2570 what to do grey screen appears during startup

anyone else having trouble booting from osx install disk after replaceing hard disk?

    Hello,
Open console in Applications>Utilities, check the system log for the date/time of the last problem  & the Startup right after that for clues.
Have you blown the dust out lately?
Get Temperature Monitor to see if it's heat related...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/12381/temperature-monitor
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Prohibitory Sign, Can't sign in to computer after software update

I have a MacBook Pro 13" inch, mid 2012. I updated some of my software, (I believe it was Safari, maybe a security update, and maybe a startup update?) I can't really remember, but they were all relatively small and I figured they would be quick updates. Once it updated and told me to restart, my computer will not properly start up at all. I get to the user login screen, type the password, then the apple logo shows up for a few seconds then goes to the prohibatory sign on the gray screen with the spinning gear. I left my computer plugged into the power cord all night and when I woke up it was still doing the same thing. I've held down the power button to hard restart it multiple times, tried to restart in SafeMode, but nothing changes when I hold down "shift" or "shift-command-V"
I CANNOT lose my files.I have so many documents from my entire 4 years of college on there that I've spent countless hours working on and perfecting.
PLEASE Tell me this can be an easy fix?!?!

Mac OS X- Gray screen or prohibitory sign appears during startup

  • MacBook doesnt boot. It shows Apple logo and spinning wheel. Soon it wont go beyond prohibitory sign with spinning wheel

I have a MacBook (Late 2008 edition) having Mac OS X 10.6.8 SnowLeopard OS installed (2 X 512GB RAM, 160 HDD). I copied some mp3 into iTunes library and soon the process got stucked. MacBook was not accepting any command/it seemed to got hanged. Carelessly, I switched the MacBook OFF by pressing the Power button. Now, when it began to boot again, all I hear was some clicking sound from the MacBook (seems HardDrive failure because the sounds seems to be from HardDrive). After few seconds, It showed flashing folder with question mark and it wont go beyond that.
    Steps I tried:
    1. Resetting NVRAM, PVRAM and SMC.
    2. Booting in safe mode.
    3. To boot from install DVD (Mac OS X 10.6.3 SnowLeopard).
    4. Holding down 'option' button while booting. It shows the "Mac OS X Install DVD" icon but as I click it and press return, it again shows Apple logo with spinning wheel and little later it shows prohibitory sign with spinning wheel. This will now remain for ever and ever.
    5. I bought a new 500 GB HardDrive and replaced the old one with this. Now trying to boot with DVD (Mac OS X 10.6.3 SnowLeopard) it again hows Apple logo with spinning wheel and little later it shows prohibitory sign with spinning wheel. This will remain for ever.
Any suggestions to overcome this problem will be highly appreciated and I'll be very grateful for all your help.
    Thanking You.

  • Prohibitory sign on start up.

When starting up my MacBook, it boots to a white screen with a prohibitory sign (circle with a cross through it). I looked up some suggestions, but have not had luck yet. They were also older support posts (2010, etc).
My computer is a MacBook Pro from about 2009. It has the most recent Yosemite OS X.

    Good Morning Mere-Glim,
