A bug is loose!

I'm not sure what the problem is exactly, but since a recent update to the software in my iMac running Snow Leopard 10.6.5 (10H574); Time Machine has been going kind of nuts. I have been getting error messages: Time Machine (apparently isn't running anymore and my backup hard-drive is no longer recognized), also recently when I turned on my printer a message appears on screen within a small window and with a Warning icon and message, "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" with ignore and (highlighted) Eject for choices. The computer has also become sluggish. I haven't changed anything, no cables have been used and I haven't downloaded anything since the computer updated itself.
One other thing. This is an Intel iMac. Downstairs we also have a G5 iMac running Leopard. Similar things have been going on with it too. It also has a back-up hard-drive that today started to not be recognized.
Something happened to both machines, which were recently updated. Can someone please shed a light and possible corrective actions. Thank You!

Open /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility and Repair your Time Machine Machine disk. I found that I had to do this on mine because it was doing the same exact thing on mine. Hope this work for you.

  • Bugs in MultiTouch drivers

    Hello, I have Vista 64 Ultimate X61T, I switched working on my Multitouch Multiview thinkpad screen as primary screen and having external screen as secondary.
    As I dock and undock frequently, I am experiencing bugs:
     - frequent loosing of input for the pen and touchscreen and redirecting to external screen,
    - if thinkpad screen is secondary the pen and touch are only giving output on the primary screen, which when PC is docked in tablet mode will have reverse input.
    - frequent message about WWAN preventing screen rotation while there is no WWAN in my PC.
    So where to send this and how to push Lenovo to fix it? Errors are repeating across many platforms and all with updated software.

    Thanks Justin!
    As far as I can tell its a bug. If you open an ODBC linked table in Access and update a Varchar2(4000) field it only writes 3,700 or so characters (for a table with lots of fields). If you do the same thing with an update query and update just the varchar2(4000) field it will update the full 4000 characters.
    Also, this truncation does not occur with earlier versions of the ODBC drivers so it is something they have introduced with v9.2.0.2 and v8.1.7.7. I encountered the UTF-8 issue a while ago with early versions of the 8.1.6 drivers and this is different.
    I appreciate the response. I thought these forums were monitored by Oracle personnel but I guess youre doing such a great job they dont deem it necessary. You should send them an invoice!! :)

  • Need links to open in different window

    Please forgive my outrageous ignorance with respect to
    webpage design/development and especially Dreamweaver CS3. I
    created a very basic website in Microsoft Office Publisher 2003 and
    I have it up and running (www.ftembroidery.com). It is my very
    first attempt at making a website.
    The purpose of this page is not so much to make sales over
    the internet, although some of our repeat customers do contact us
    and order via the internet. The purpose of our page is to be able
    to talk with our customers on the telelphone and guide them to
    various products in the catalogs we have linked. Basically we're
    handing them a stack of "electronic" catalogs from a handfull of
    our suppliers so they can decide what to purchase.
    I would like these "catalogs" (links) to return to OUR
    website if the viewer closes the page. Currently, they do not. If
    you close the window of one of the catalogs, you shut down
    everything. I believe that means the catalog links need to open in
    a new window. If I am correct in that belief, how do I
    change/correct my webpage to do that?
    Once I have done that, I will have time to learn more about
    webpage design/development and how to use the Dreamweaver CS3 that
    I just purchased.
    Thanks in advance for your help, remembering please to be
    very clear and specific because of my lack of knowledge and
    experience.

  • 4k television and the correct processor

    I purchased a Sony 930C for its ability to provide 4k programming.  I am using an Onkyo SC3309 processor which was designed for HDMI 1.4. In order to get the best 4k, I am now told that I need a new processor, one designed to handle the new standard, 2.0 HDMI.  I use an external audio system including my B&W 802 mains.  Can I get away without replacing my Onkyo and if so, how?  Otherwise, any suggestions about an appropriate processor?

    You may have to run another optical cable from your receiver to the TV. I use Pioneer SC-85 receiver, it is hdmi 2.0 and works well with the Sony 4k (xbr75x850c) with full control including ARC. The SC-85 even has it's own 4K upscalling processor. Very stable and reliable receiver with no issues what so ever, also has a nice detailed documentation (Sony take note). Although due to android bugs it looses sync occasionally, very frustating. I have to recycle the TV power to fixt it.

  • Xperia M loses network on WCDMA/GSM auto mode

    Hi there,Xperia M usually loses network while calling on WCDMA/GSM auto mode. After a few seconds of a call phone freezes, a caller does not hear me, I do not hear them either.After this phone becomes unreachable for several minutes. However the network coverage shows as 100%.I know you might advise to switch to GSM mode only, but this is not a solution. I have bought 3G phone, and I need 3G.in order to be back to network I have to reboot the phone.This is surely a bug of loosing the network while auto-switching WCDMA/GSM modes automatically.Dear Support team, any solutions?thank you.Best, Max

  • Logic windows loosing "link" bug?

    Hello everyone,
    My Logic windows are loosing their "link" ability, and I'm wondering if its a bug. In my main screenset I have 5 windows that are used: Arrange, movie as float, global mixer, event editor, and an environment window on a 2nd monitor used for selecting instruments. In my setup, I use midi instrument tracks to trigger exs instruments, and use channel splitters to select different articulations per instrument, allowing for my instrument parts to play multiple articulations on a single track.
    Now, in the course of my work I consistently switch between the event editor, global mixer, environment, and arrange page, and sometimes my "link" between the environment page and my arrange page becomes dead. i.e. I can switch between tracks in my arrange page, but it no longer switches instruments in my environment page. The only solution I've found is to click on the environment to "refresh it" and then click on my arrange page, and they are now back in sync. However, it seems that once I click on the global mixer, the environment is once again out of sync with the arrange page.
    Is there anyway to fix this behavior and have the environment always be in sync with the arrange page? Is this a flaw in dual monitor operation or a bug in Logic? Note: my environment uses the "pink/purple" link where my event editor uses "golden link." All windows, except my movie and transport, are non-float.
    I'm guessing this is a bug, but would like to make sure. Thanks again for your help!

    I figured out what I do sometimes that causes that (maybe this is what's happening to you guys - at least some of the time?). Try this:
    While the song is playing, use the scrollbar to scroll ahead to a part of the song that isn't on the screen. As soon as you scroll off-screen, the Link button goes out. The song stays where you put it, but you lose the Link.
    A better behavior would be that when you release the mouse, the song snaps back to where the SPL is and keeps the Link button enabled. Alternatively, the song position could stay where you left it (with the SPL finally catching up), but keep the Link button enabled. The next time you start the song, it would snap to the SPL. The way it is just doesn't work well - at least for me.

  • Mavericks Mail has a bug:  emails refresh and I loose current email.

    Many times, when reading emails in mail in the mornings, I loose my email from the unread smartbox where I was reading it.  The problem I found is that Mail refreshes after getting more email and after refresh, the email I was reading does no longer meet the unread condition of my smartbox.  It is extremely annoying.
    Is anyone experiencing similar problems caused by mail's refresh?
    Apple, please fix this!
    Most people recommended to access gmail directly online.   But I manage multiple emails in my mail (gmail would be messy)...
    ideas?

    Ok, well, the good news is that only 2 people on earth have had this problem.  The other good news is that I have narrowed the culprit down to Keychain which was causing mail to refresh every 60 seconds.  Hopefully this will save someone else many, many hours of greif should they come across the same issue.
    Turning off keychain under iCloud settings fixes the problem immediately.  Turning it back on brings the problem back immediately.  I would still like to use Keychain across my devices so I've tried the Repair option in Keychain First-Aid under the Keychain menu.  I have applied this on both my air and iMac (as doing it on one didn't fix it on the other) and restarted both machines.  First-aid did find and fix a couple of Keychain issues.  Will know whitin a week whether that was the correct fix or not as it can take anywhere from 5 hours to 5 days for the issue to reappear after a restart.

  • Multiple return values (Bug-ID 4222792)

    I had exactly the same request for the same 3 reasons: strong type safety and code correctness verification at compile-time, code readability and ease of mantenance, performance.
    Here is what Sun replied to me:
    Autoboxing and varargs are provided as part of
    JSRs 14 and 201
    http://jcp.org/en/jsr/detail?id=14
    http://jcp.org/en/jsr/detail?id=201
    See also:
    http://forum.java.sun.com/forum.jsp?forum=316
    http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/earlyAccess/adding_generics/index.html
    Multiple return values is covered by Bug-ID 4222792
    Typically this is done by returning an array.
    http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/bugParade/bugs/4222792.html
    That's exactly the problem: we dynamically create instances of array objects that would better fit well within the operand stack without stressing the garbage collector with temporary Array object instances (and with their backing store: 2 separate allocations that need to be recycled when it is clearly a pollution that the operand stack would clean up more efficiently)
    If you would like to engage in a discussion with the Java Language developers, the Generics forum would be a better place:
    http://forum.java.sun.com/forum.jsp?forum=316
    I know that (my report was already refering to the JSR for language extension) Generics is not what I was refering to (even if a generic could handle multiple return values, it would still be an allocated Object
    instance to pack them, i.e. just less convenient than using a static class for type safety.
    The most common case of multiple return values involve values that have known static datatypes and that should be checked with strong typesafety.
    The simple case that involves returning two ints then will require at least two object instances and will not solve the garbage collection overhead.
    Using a array of variable objects is exactly similar, except that it requires two instances for the components and one instance for the generic array container. Using extra method parameters with Integer, Byte, ... boxing objects is more efficient, but for now the only practical solution (which causes the least pollution in the VM allocator and garbage collector) is to use a custom class to store the return values in a single instance.
    This is not natural, and needlessly complexifies many interfaces.
    So to avoid this pollution, some solutions are used such as packing two ints into a long and returning a long, depacking the long after return (not quite clean but still much faster at run-time for methods that need to be used with high frequencies within the application. In some case, the only way to cut down the overhead is to inline methods within the caller code, and this does not help code maintenance by splitting the implementation into small methods (something that C++ can do very easily, both because it supports native types parameters by reference, and because it also supports inline methods).
    Finally, suppose we don't want to use tricky code, difficult to maintain, then we'll have to use boxing Object types to allow passing arguments by reference. Shamely boxed native types cannot be allocated on the operand stack as local variables, so we need to instanciate these local variables before call, and we loose the capacity to track the cases where these local variables are not really initialized by an effective call to the method that will assign them. This does not help debugging, and is against the concept of a strongly typed language like Java should be:
    Java makes lots of efforts to track uninitialized variables, but has no way to determine if an already instanciated Object instance refered in a local variable has effectively received an effective assignment because only the instanciation is kept. A typical code will then need to be written like this:
    Integer a = null;
    Integer b = null;
    if (some condition) {
    //call.method(a, b, 0, 1, "dummy input arg");
    // the method is supposed to have assigned a value to a and b,
    // but can't if a and b have not been instanciated, so we perform:
    call.method(a = new Integer(), b = new Integer(), 0, 1, "dummy input
    arg");
    // we must suppose that the method has modified (not initialized!)
    the value
    // of a and b instances.
    now.use(a.value(), b.value())
    // are we sure here that a and b have received a value????
    // the code may be detected at run-time (a null exception)
    // or completely undetected (the method() above was called but it
    // forgot to assign a value to its referenced objects a and b, in which
    // case we are calling in fact: now.use(0, 0); with the default values
    // or a and b, assigned when they were instanciated)
    Very tricky... Hard to debug. It would be much simpler if we just used:
    int a;
    int b;
    if (some condition) {
    (a, b) = call.method(0, 1, "dummy input arg");
    now.use(a, b);
    The compiler would immediately detect the case where a and b are in fact not always initialized (possible use bere initialization), and the first invoked call.method() would not have to check if its arguments are not null, it would not compile if it forgets to return two values in some code path...
    There's no need to provide extra boxing objects in the source as well as at run-time, and there's no stress added to the VM allocator or garbage collector simply because return values are only allocated on the perand stack by the caller, directly instanciated within the callee which MUST (checked at compile-time) create such instances by using the return statement to instanciate them, and the caller now just needs to use directly the variables which were referenced before call (here a and b). Clean and mean. And it allows strong typechecking as well (so this is a real help for programmers.
    Note that the signature of the method() above is:
    class call {
    (int, int) method(int, int, String) { ... }
    id est:
    class "call", member name "method", member type "(IILjava.lang.string;)II"
    This last signature means that the method can only be called by returning the value into a pair of variables of type int, or using the return value as a pair of actual arguments for another method call such as:
    call.method(call.method("dummy input arg"), "other dummy input arg")
    This is strongly typed and convenient to write and debug and very efficient at run-time...

    Can anyone give me some real-world examples where
    multiple return values aren't better captured in a
    class that logically groups those values? I can of
    course give hundreds of examples for why it's better
    to capture method arguments as multiple values instead
    of as one "logical object", but whenever I've hankered
    for multiple return values, I end up rethinking my
    strategy and rewriting my code to be better Object
    Oriented.I'd personally say you're usually right. There's almost always a O-O way of avoiding the situation.
    Sometimes though, you really do just want to return "two ints" from a function. There's no logical object you can think of to put them in. So you end up polluting the namespace:
    public class MyUsefulClass {
    public TwoInts calculateSomething(int a, int b, int c) {
    public static class TwoInts {
        //now, do I use two public int fields here, making it
        //in essence a struct?
       //or do I make my two ints private & final, which
       //requires a constructor & two getters?
      //and while I'm at it, is it worth implementing
      //equals(), how about hashCode()? clone()?
      //readResolve() ?
    }The answer to most of the questions for something as simple as "TwoInts" is usually "no: its not worth implementing those methods", but I still have to think about them.
    More to the point, the TwoInts class looks so ugly polluting the top level namespace like that, MyUsefulClass.TwoInts is public, that I don't think I've ever actually created that class. I always find some way to avoid it, even if the workaround is just as ugly.
    For myself, I'd like to see some simple pass-by-value "Tuple" type. My fear is it'd be abused as a way for lazy programmers to avoid creating objects when they should have a logical type for readability & maintainability.
    Anyone who has maintained code where someone has passed in all their arguments as (mutable!) Maps, Collections and/or Arrays and "returned" values by mutating those structures knows what a nightmare it can be. Which I suppose is an argument that cuts both ways: on the one hand you can say: "why add Tuples which would be another easy thing to abuse", on the other: "why not add Tuples, given Arrays and the Collections framework already allow bad programmers to produce unmainable mush. One more feature isn't going to make a difference either way".
    Ho hum.

  • Screen Mirroring does not work, full of bugs.

    Hi,
    I've had a Sony Z1 for well over six months now and have got a Sony Bravia TV that supports mircast screen mirroring. When I purchased the Z1 it was on android 4.2 and the screen mirroring worked a treat, it was lag free, always responsive etc.
    But when I upgraded to 4.3, the mirroring was buggy as **bleep**, the device always disconnected, when it did connect after several attempts it would lag, black out, then disconnect again. I've tried fiddling with wifi settings as well as wifi direct etc. but no joy and I left it as that.
    When I knew 4.4 kitkat was coming to the z1 I waited as I would assume the issue would be fixed, but I upgraded to 4.4 (build: 14.3.A.0.757) today and is still full of these disconnecting and unresponsive bugs. I'm not sure what the problem is, I mirrored a samsung s4 mini and works absolutely fine (4.2) and I can mirror my sony xperia tablet z (4.3) with no issues either. I know a relative who also owns the z1 and has exactly the same issue, what also seems to happen now and then, is that half way through a mirrored session, the wifi would disable and will switch to the mobile network, then after some time, back to wifi again; yet this never happened on 4.2?
    Is there a fix or a way to solve these issues? It's rather annoying having such a great feature that doesn't want to work on a flagship.
    Thanks.

    I had some issues with Miracast on my Z1 but with 4.2 and 4.3 firmware. It was loosing connection or kept saying that I don't have HDCP. I was connecting using Netgear Push2TV.
    On 4.4  (.757) it works quite stable. On Z1C with 4.3 I wasn't able to miracast at all.
    The same goes with screen mirroring to Z2 tablet. Works fine from Z1 to Z2 (both KitKat, altough one touch pairing is a disaster and not working at all), but you can forget about it using Z1C and Android 4.3.
