A camcorder and a camera or a DSLR with video?

Hi,
I need a semi-pro photo camera and also a camcorder. I´ve been waiting for good solutions for almost an year, but...I cant´wait no more ,-)
Canon 5D Mark II is the only serious (almost perfect with new firmware this month/where´s the 24fps?). The rest are no good as video solutions. Nikon is losing this war; Lumix (Panasonic) isn´t the real thing too in my opinion (4/3). Sony? Red? No big news. And a year is almost completed since the D90.

Scenario 1:
Pros: good Full format solution for both photo and video, good DOF, big sensor, change lenses, one camera to carry.
Cons: a bit more expensive, no real dedicated video camera.
Scenario 2:
Pros: good DX format solution for photo, a real dedicated video camera (maybe the best at that level), a less expensive solution
Cons: No full format for photo, no good DOF, lenses, big sensor for video, two cameras to carry
Scenario 3:
Pros: good DX format solution for photo, a real dedicated video camera (one of the best at that level), an even less expensive solution
Cons: No full format for photo, no good DOF, lenses, big sensor for video, two cameras to carry
I would like to have your choices, votes and comments for this, please.

The 5D is a very impressive still camera. Video is an extra feature probably required by the marketing department to beef up the feature list; video capability in still cameras has become almost a necessity since even cheap digital point & shoots can do some kind of video.
Here are the 5D's video specs:
• Video shooting available optionally during Live view mode
• 1920 x 1080 (16:9) up to 12 mins (Quicktime 1080p H.264; 38.6 Mbits/sec)
• 640 x 480 (4:3) up to 24 mins (Quicktime 480p H.264; 17.3 Mbits/sec)
• Max file size 4 GB
• Quicktime MOV format (H.264 video, PCM sound)
• 30 fps
These are not exciting video specs. You will be limited to very short videos, few if any controls, a highly compressed video format, and questionable capture & editing capabilities. If you really expect to do serious video, including any meaningful editing, you should invest in a separate camcorder.
Effective integration of still photo + video in a single camera is still in the future.

IMovie 5.0.2 sees and controls camera but won't display video or sound

OK, my camera used to work with my iMac G4 800 just fine, it's a JVC GR-DVF11U back from the stone age (heh but I am having trouble getting any video or audio on my PB 12" G4 with iMovie 5.02. iMovie will control the camera (play, stop, ff, review) just fine but all I get is a blue screen. I tried a friends (modern) Sony (not sure of the model #)and had the same results so I think it's a problem with iMovie, not the cameras. Anyway, any help ya'll could give would be great Thanks

Yes, but you will have to install the Camera Raw 8.5 or later update. Go to Help > Updates to start the update process. You can verify what version of Camera Raw you have installed by going to Help (Win) or Photoshop Elements (Mac) > About Plug-in > Camera Raw.

Can you copy and paste camera raw filter settings for video?

I have just learned how to use the camera raw filter for color correcting my video clips. Is there a way to copy the settings for one clip and apply it to another? How do you do this?

While trying to replace my battery I pulled on the black piece and it came off board along with battery what do I do is there a way to repair it without having to buy a new phone?

While replacing my battery I was using the tool to pop out battery whie doing so the battery came out along with the black piece it catches or goes onto on the motherboard ..I tried to hold it onto the board with finger and phone stays on but now battery won't charge ...so I ought it. A store and this guy solders it back on but now it's as if it's not even on he board and the phone is in permanent reset like as if I plugged it in without a battery is there a way that I can fix this and have Pune still work and recharge my battery without having to buy a new phone?

Good evening everyone...
First off I wanted to say that I'm ****** off and even more frustrated by my MacBook Air, god dammit this machine was expensive and now all I get are problems.
But enough of that, let me get to the point already.
So I made a topic in "Apple Support Communities" about a week ago ? Maybe two - bascially it was about my MacBook Air having this "kernel_task_" problem.
After that I sent this Mac for a warranty repair, of course they have replaced the Logic Board and claimed that it has been repaired - fine, that's amazing right ?
Well, NO.
So I was happy to finally get to use a computer at home (Not to mention that I need a computer at home to do any kind of studying or anything at all) and when I booted it up everything seemed to be fine - fantastic even !.
After launching it I updated my software (05/03/2013, Firmware Update 1.8, Java for OSX 1.0 and iTunes) and started to use it as normal, I was browsing the internet when my Mac turned off just like that while being plugged in into the charger.
I thought to myself - well, bad luck I guess.
I've turned it on again, it went fine for about 30-60 minutes then I turned it off without any problems
RANDOM SHUTDOWN COUNT : 2
After some time I plugged in my power adapter into it and guess what ? It turned on the MacBook by itself without me pressing the power button.
What the ****
So, basically what happens now is :
1. My MacBook Air randomly Shuts down
2. My MacBook Air turns on every time I plug my charger into it while being completely turned off
Any ideas -.- ?

Well, it turned off randomly again and I had some problems turning it on.
That was my first and last Apple computer I have ever bought, call it bad luck but I am dissapointed right now because I would expect a better quality product for that price.
Seems like I will have to build a PC workstation then, at least that will be more reliable.

Volume and app bug on Amber L920 (with video)

so, up to date Lumia 920, during music playback volume goes all the way down and won't go up without a restat. It happened again after a restart. As you can see, all sorts of things go wild because the volume got stuck, back button stopped working for starters.

Also, i used to have a black 920, prior to Amber, then i occasionaly had the volume going down problem, but never going down to 0 and getting stuck there and never all the other stuff that happens.
Not to mention that 2 reboots drained over 20% of my battery, which is also silly.

Hello and welcome to the forums!
We have just released an update to webOS, which does address several concerns from 1.4, so I would recommend first updating to the most current version, then see if the problems with the volume slider and camera app continue.
If you do continue to see this, you may need to contact technical support for further troubleshooting.

I just bought a brand new Cannon GL2 camcorder and I am trying to import...

I just bought a brand new Cannon GL2 camcorder and I am trying to import some video footage into Final Cut Pro version 5.01. Whenever I put up the Log and Capture screen and turn my camcorder on the computer starts to think(the spinning color wheel) and not let me do anything else not even press play unless I completely turn the camcorder off again which defeats the whole purpose of me even importing footage. I don't understand why the Log and Capture screen won't let me import any video my old Sony Digital Hi8 was importing just fine a day ago, but now that I bumped up to the GL2 for some reason the Log and Capture screen isn't doing it's job so well by the computer starting to think(the spinning color wheel) instead of working. I have used the Cannon GL1 in the past and it worked like a charm. So I don't understand why the GL2 wouldn't be any easier? It is just giving me this problem and I don't know wether it's the firewire bus or what? Can someone please help me with my dilemma?

Ha...ha..very funny...but ah yeah from reading other posts on the "Canon" GL2 I figured out that you can't have multiple devices plugged into the firewire bus at the same time while you're importing video into Final Cut Pro. That's a HUGE bummer...thanks guys for your help you where fast and reliant. But now I have another problem my internal hard drive only has 4 GB out of 75 GB and my applications take up at least 40 GB of space. How am I going to connect my 600 GB external hard drive to the computer and import footage at the same time? Can you guys help me with this now?

Imovie 11 Canon Camcorder and Camera support

I have a Canon Legria HF M46 and a Canon Ixus 600D. Imovie 11 can not recornize any of the 2 models when i connect via USB. Iphoto 11 finds both products
with no problem. Anybody have and idea what i am doing wrong. I can see when i search the internet that other peogle have no proglemt getting Imovie reconizing Legria M41. The Camcorder is the most importent. Of course i could by a SD card and take it out of my Camcorder and into my SD card reader of the mac (i have a mac mini) But i have bougt the M46 becourse of the internel 16gb memory and hope anybody have a suggestion.

Panasonic HDC-Z10000 Professional 3D Camcorder and AVCHD3D

I bought Panasonic HDC-Z10000 Professional 3D Camcorder. Format of shooting of AVCHD3D. Video from the camera is imported to the 2D. How to import the 3D?

I just bought two Canon HG10 AVCHD camcorder. I'll be using them for a few Smashing Pumpkins concerts in Philly in the next several days.
Here's what I found out so far just playing with them for 20 minutes.
AVCHD + iMove '08 or Final Cut Pro 6.0.1 /= PowerPC
It's not going to work on a PowerPC Mac.
Final Cut Pro 6.0.1 says:
Warning:
AVCHD media is unsupported on PowerPC based hardware.
iMovie '08 says:
AVCHD Device not supported
An Intel-based Macintosh is required to capture AVCHD video; try changing your camcorder settings to standard definition.
I didn't buy this camcorder for standard def. I did not bother trying that option.
It worked on my Intel MacBook Pro with Final Cut Pro 6.0.1. I don't have iMovie installed on there so I didn't try it.
I recorded a clip about a minute long, 01:01:13 to be exact. I put
the camcorder in USB mode and it mounts on my PowerPC and Intel Mac's
without installing any software.
Going through the file structure I find
/Volumes/CANON_HDD/AVCHD/BDMV/STREAM/00000.MTS
MTS = MPEG Transport Stream
That file is 119.6 mb.
I can get the .MTS to play in VLC Media Player but it crashes after a few seconds.
Final Cut Pro 6.0.1 has no idea what to do with .MTS files. When dragging to the bin I get File error: unknown type. You have to go to File > Log And Transfer. Not File > Log And Capture like you
normally would to capture a tape.
From there it transcodes the .MTS file using the Apple ProRes 422 codec. This takes time and makes your nice little 119.6mb file about EIGHT times as big. The file is 929.3 mb! One gigabyte for one minute! It's 24p and 1080 x 1920 though.

Canon ZR40 camcorder and a Macbook with the latest OS.

I have a Canon ZR40 and a Macbook with the latest OS. My iMovie does not recognize the camcorder. Can someone please give me step by step directions on what I should be doing?

1. Turn on the camcorder and set it to VTR or VCR mode (this mode may have a different name on your
camera).
2. Connect the camcorder to your computer using a FireWire cable (the one that came with your
camcorder or any other FireWire cable).
3. If this is the first time you’re importing from a device that records high-definition (HD) video, an HD
Import Setting dialog appears. Even if you aren’t importing HD video now, select Large or Full, and then
click OK.
You can change this preference later if you do import HD video.
4. If the Import window doesn’t open, choose File > “Import from Camera.”
5. If you have multiple devices connected to your computer, choose the device you want to import from the
Camera pop-up menu.
6. Set the switch on the lower-left side of the window to one of the following:
Automatic: Automatically rewinds the tape, imports all of the tape contents, and rewinds the tape
again.
Manual: Lets you rewind and fast-forward the tape so that you can import only the footage you want.
Use the controls to set your tape to the point where you want to begin importing.
7. Click Import.
If you still can’t import video after checking the items above, try the following:
If iMovie doesn’t recognize your camcorder
Turn the camcorder off and on again.
Disconnect the cable from both the camcorder and the computer, and then reconnect it.
Quit and then reopen iMovie.
Restart your computer.
Try using a different cable.
Try using a different computer with iMovie installed.

In FCE HD swithing between HD camcorder and SD camcorder problem

I am just starting to go HD. I've got my new Sony HC3 HD camcorder and I've just upgraded my mac to FCE HD. I was able to connect the fireware to the HD camcorder and import the footage just fine when I changed "Easy Setup" to "HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60". The problem is I still want to be able to connect to my Canon Optura Xi SD camcorder. When I change the "Easy Setup" to "DV-NTSC", it can not see the SD camcorder. I've tried every option in the "Easy Setup" dropdown. I think I have tried every combination of exiting FCE HD, rebooting, disconnecting the firewire, turning the camcorder on / off, etc.
When I had FCE 2.0, I never had a problem connecting to my SD camcorder. Now I do. The only other point I want to mention is that no matter what option I select in the "Easy Setup", the "External A/V" error message (the one with the continue or check again option) always says:
"Unable to locate the following external devices:
Apple FireWire NTSC (720 x 480)".

Did you quit FCE HD before unpluging your HC3?
It's always a good idea to do all conections and turn on your camcorder to VCR mode before lauching FCE.
Avoid to plug and unplug differents camcorders in one FCE session.
Try to connect your DV camcorder in a new project and select DV-NTSC or firewire basic (canon camcorder are prone to be "uncontrolable" with DV NTSC ) in easy setup BEFORE creating a new sequence. Now quit, plug your DV cam and re-lauch FCE HD.
For your "warning problem" on startup, check "do not show A/V device warning on lauch" in user preference.
At last, you can trash all 3 FCE HD preference files.

Sony Camcorder and an ibook G4 - a love/hate relationship?

Hi, I'm new to using a Mac and i'm keen to edit our summer videos, shot using a Sony Handycam DCR-HC18E.
I don't think it's compatible -so what do i have to do?
Is it worth keeping the Handycam or do i launch it up the Garden?

As Karsten says (..at least, I think that's what he says!! nudge-nudge-wink-wink!..) that camera is completely compatible with iMovie.
Sony's description says (click on this link) "i.LINK (DV) In: NO, i.LINK (DV) Out: YES", which means, as Karsten said(?!) that you can feed DV OUT of the camcorder, but not back IN again from your Mac after editing, but that's no big problem: burn a DVD of it instead.
Sony don't pack a FireWire/i.Link/DV cable in the box (you can't use a USB cable for video) with the camcorder, but you can get the 4-pin-to-6-pin FireWire/i.Link cable which Karsten suggests at any Jessops/Curry's.digital/Dixons/PC World/Maplin/John Lewis or other electronics shop, and that will connect the cam to your Mac.
P.S: Karsten; it's a lovely day here in Haidhausen ..I'll be hobbling up to Herr Modl's camera and electronics shop in half a mo'..

Mac Pro and MiniDV camera there's an issue

Hi everybody,
I've bough a Mac Pro 2.66 Ghz and when I try to connect my MiniDV cam on it it doesn't work
Here's the problem: When working on Final Cut Express HD or iMovie HD it just don't see any camcorder attached but it was working on my old G4
And I just tried it on my Win XP partition and it works as it should so it's not a cable issue
any idea ?
By the way my cam is a Panasonic PV-GS2

Humm... I have a Canon GL2 and Final Cut Express and iMovie see and capture video just fine. If possible, try a different camcorder and if its a no go then run a hardware test and make sure your firewire feature is operating as it should. Check your cables, might be a source problem.

Using My Digital Video Camcorder and Quicktime...any Help???

I recently purchased a digital camcorder that I am trying to get to work with my Mac. I also just purchased Quicktime 7.0.4 PRO which I am hoping can convert the files from my camcorder to a viewable Mac format.
I am using OSX 10.4.6. The camera is a DXG-305 and the software written for the camera is for PC only. When I connect the camera to my Mac I get a folder to pop up of whatever I have captured but it shows files that are in a .ASF format. When I click on the file to try to open it , it wants to open in Microsoft Windows. When I go into Quicktime PRO and under File try to "Open File"- the file does not even become highlighted or selectable? Is this a file that Quicktime PRO is not able to open? If not, is there anyway that I can convert this file to one that I can use on my Mac? Is it possible to upload from my camcorder via the included USB cable and convert directly through Quicktime PRO? I am looking for ANY solution to this dilemma? Thank you-

Yes. Your camera's native video format is MPEG-4 and appears to possibly be "muxed" with MP3 audio.
If not, is there anyway that I can convert this file to one that I can use on my Mac?
Try installing the free Flip4Mac component. Then try playing the .asf file in the QT Player.
Is it possible to upload from my camcorder via the included USB cable and convert directly through Quicktime PRO?
If your file plays using the Flip4Mac player component, you may then wish to consider purchasing full conversion codec which will allow you to export your DXG-305V files to any frame-to-frame synchronized QT compatible format in QTPro.
