A codec for both platforms

So I've been editing this documentry for a studio:
It was all shot on a Sony XDCam EX at 1080p 24fps and its being cut on FCP 6.1.
Now my issue is the studio primarily works on a PC platrom and i need to know which codecs native to FCP i can render out at that will be both HQ with managable file sizes and readable on both the PC and Mac.
Also, since this project is being put out to DVD are there any other notes you might be able to give on things like the movie's file size, pixel aspect ratio, or letterboxing.
Thank you much!

PhotoJPEG at 75%. This is the format that stock footage companies typically use for files that you download or get on DVDs.
Also, since this project is being put out to DVD are there any other notes you might be able to give on things like the movie's file size, pixel aspect ratio, or letterboxing.
File size is meaningless...time is the factor. And this depends on HOW you will be authoring the DVD. DVD SP has a max of 150 min...and there is a preset for that. Aspect ratio, letterboxing...up do you. Will people be watching it on HDTVs or regular 4:3 ones?

  • Lightroom for Both Platforms

Hopefully this coming week I will be purchasing an iMac for my photography needs. I also own a windows based laptop. So my intention is to purchase a box copy (not download) of Lightroom 2.5.
To date I,ve not seen Lightroom for windows only or Lightroom for iMac OS only. So the the question I ask is are both platforms supported on the one disc and can I load up Lightroom on the iMac and Lightroom on the Laptop (windows) or is this going to mean two purchases.

If you have any version of LR 2.x the up grade to the latest version is free. So if you already have a license you are good to go. The upgrade will overwrite the previous version so there is no need to uninstall.
The Mac version will not install on the PC so you can burn to a cd and Install on the Mac when it arrives.

  • Upgrade for both mac and windows

I use PSE 9 (Photoshop Elements) on my Windows box and PE 11 (Premiere Elements) on my Mac, (both registered).  The upgrade on the Adobe site offers download for a single platform.  After I download for one platform, can I come back somewhere and download for the other?

Buy it in a box and you get discs for both platforms and a serial number that works on both. If you're in the US you can be sure that the full version will be cheaper than the adobe  upgrade version soon, especially around Black Friday, if you watch online retailers and big box stores.

  • Best Projector for MIRRORING in both platforms (OS X / WIN)

We have computer labs that need to project (MIRROR) the instructors screen in MAC OS X or VISTA (Boot Camp). We have the Intel C2D 24" iMacs with the NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT video in some labs and QC Intel XEON Mac Pros with the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT connected to a ViewSonic VP191b in the other labs
    Would purchasing a NATIVE High Def (1920 X 1080 or 1280 X 720) serve both platforms best?

I have Epson Projectors in my labs. Projecting on a white wall is sufficient for me.

  • Best PPCS5 output codec for import to FCE

Got a friend who's had trouble capturing from my XHA1 into Final Cut Express on his Macbook Pro. So I'm capturing using PProCS5 and I'm going to export the clips for him to edit on his FCE. I don't have any special codec packages installed, just the basics that come with PPro. What's the best output to give him for editing in FCE on his Mac?

...but all he needs is the sound.
You could have exported AIFFs then, and forgone the unnecessary bulk of even the DV MOVs.
You're probably a little limited with the built-in codecs for HD source when going from PPro the FCE. Yeah, you could do something like uncompressed/None, but those would be huge. I'm not positive, but a DVCPROHD MOV might work, even in FCE--yes, you do have that as an export option from Premiere Pro, and I'm not talking about P2 MXF. Those would keep the file sizes reasonable, and not apply too much additional, visible compression.
Another choice would be the Avid DNxHD QuickTime codecs; they're cross-platform, free, and look great. That involves an install on both machines (get 'em here), but that's pretty painless and offers great flexibility.

  • Is there a DNG WIC codec for Vista (etc)?

Vista supports some basic file formats directly, but others (including raw formats) are supported via codecs conforming to WIC (Windows Imaging Component).
I have just read that Nikon now supply a WIC codec for NEFs. (I don't know if any other camera manufacturers supply WIC codecs).
Is there a Vista codec for DNG?

What features are people looking for in a codec? I'm taking the initiative and writing a commercial decoder. I don't know what Adobe's timeline is, so I have no idea if I will get scooped. On the other hand, Apple wrote their own support into their OS, and it seems like Microsoft should be expected to do the same from Adobe's point of view: Adobe provided a nice SDK, which I am using, and is it Adobe's duty to port their technology to every platform?
Getting in Thumbnails and Previews shouldn't be too hard.
Metadata reading isn't all that difficult, but I wouldn't trust WICs metadata writer to get things right. However, from the sound of it people will most likely using an Adobe product to do editing of either image data or metadata.
Also, are folks aware of any web sites that are maintaining sample DNG images? There are a few flavors: those made with ACR, cameras that shoot DNG natively, and then there's Hasselblad's FlexColor, and I don't know if they are using the DNG SDK or rolling their own implementation. It would be nice if there was a reference library of images available to folks that need to do interop testing.
Also, if anyone from Adobe wants to chat about their implementation of the codec, then I'd like to also do interop testing with their codec (i.e., what happens when both are installed on a PC), if it is something they are indeed interested in developing and maintaining.
So I guess a have a few questions.
    1. Is thumbnail support and preview enough for your needs?
    2. As a bonus, I suspect having the ability to read out metadata would still be useful for those who have a lot of images. Would it be a show stopper to be unable to see all of your metadata in the Vista explorer and other Vista imaging apps? The less I have to do, the sooner you'll have your thumbnails and preview.
    3. What about editing metadata? Would you trust a WIC codec, or would you use the main editing tools in your work flow for maintaining metadata?

  • Where can I get window os 2003 for unity 5.0(1) for MCS7835I1 platform?

    Dear All,
I didn't receive any DVD on window os 2003 for unity 5.0(1) for MCS7835I1 platform for my purchase.
I only have got the IP Telephony OS 2003.1.1 which stated in the document that it is not for Unity.
So I tried to open case to TAC but they asked us to look from Microsoft but I believed that normal window os will not be able to install on MCS sever, am I right? So where actually can I look for this window os?
    Thanks in advance
    Jarunee

    Hi Jarunee,
    You have 2 options:
    1) You purchased the MCS-7835-I1-ECS1, I would expect this one to come with the platform configuration disk (PCD). If you did not get this you will need to contact customer service as outline in this document
    2) You purchased another flavor of this server model such as MCS-7835-I1-IPC1 or directly from IBM. This will not come with the PCD. For this you will not get a PCD and you will need to supply the operating system yourself.
The installation guide covers both scenarios to set up Unity either with PCD or self supplied OS.

  • Hi all ,anyone knows some usefual Codecs for H.264 live video/audio

I'm headache about the JMF codecs ,they are too few ,and seems inefficiency, anyone knows pure java codecs for H.264 or MPEG4 ?And I think it's better a open source one ,do my thanks , guys!

    Here are some basics....
FMLE creates RTMP protocol streams that PCs and Macs watch with Flash players.   iOS devices don't understand RTMP (Flash), only HLS delivery of 10 second chuncks of downloaded video playback.  Both systems understand H.264 video, but iOS wants to see AAC audio not MP3.
You didn't state how you are live streaming, meaning what bandwidth delivery service you are using.  Live streaming only via RTMP won't get you to successful iPad and iPhone HTTP Live Stream.  On-demand delivery to iOS devices normally requires .mp4 video files to be hosted, which Macs and PCs also understand via RTMP delivery.   But unless your delivery service can convert .f4v or .flv files to .mp4 on the fly there is no easy way to to get to iOS via the direct file output of FMLE as of today.   Sometimes we upload live encoded project files to our www.Wistia.com account for PC, Mac and iOS delivery.  This is a YouTube / Vimeo paid type hosting service for on-demand only.
Some commercial CDNs (Content Delivery Networks) today allow an inbound live RTMP into their system using FMLE.  Then they re-mux that RTMP stream into HLS delivery for iOS.  Some work well using the native MP3 audio codec (Internap), but most require FMLE to have the AAC audio codec installed from Main Concept for $200.  Or people use Wirecast from Telestream which is $500 per license to be able to run two instances on that one license.
In my 15 years of being a big commercial webcaster here in Silcion Valley, I have yet to find the perfect simple and easy and affordable RTMP to HLS live and on-demand delivery system.  We currently do it different ways with multiple providers depending on the job.  More offerings are coming out now and we try them all as they come down the pike.

  • Can I access both platforms, window and mac with one cloud account

can I access both platforms, window and mac with one cloud account

    Yes.
    One Cloud membership = 2 software activations: Win/Win or Mac/Mac or Win/Mac.

"Are there any unique benefits that come with my paid membership?
Yes, as a member of Creative Cloud, you get many benefits that you do not get when you purchase a traditional shrinkwrapped product:
Access to both the Mac OS and Windows® versions of the desktop applications and the ability to install them on your primary computer and one backup computer. So, if you have a Mac at home and a PC at work, you can install your applications on both as long as they are not running at the same time. • Mountain Lion Spotlight no longer indexes "codecs" for Apple Lossless files?

Hi, I was recently trying to find some Apple Lossless files stored on my hard drive, and I tried searching using Spotlight's "codec" option (by typing "lossless" into the search field in the Finder). However, nothing came up. Upon further investigation (by looking at the info windows for various Apple Lossless files), it appears as though Mountain Lion no longer indexes the "codec" for Apple Lossless files, and therefore doesn't let you search by it. (Although I haven't tried this recently on at least Lion or Snow Leopard systems, I can verify that on OS X Leopard, which I still have running on an old machine, both the description "Apple Lossless" next to the codec field in the Info window came up, and it would also let you search by it.)
I was just wondering if anyone else might have experienced this on their Mountain Lion systems? Thanks!

I regret to inform this still has not been solved, though deleting the externalrecords helps purge those remnants away.

power book not loading (error: unable to find driver for this platform) help

That usually happens when trying to install Mac software intended for Intel-powered Macs (made in 2006 through present) on a PowerPC mac like teh powerbook (made before 2006).
You post is a little cryptic, however. We may be of further help if you can tell us:

<> what program and its version your were trying to run and/or install.

  • Best codec for data discs?

I want to clear a large project off my drive by burning it onto data discs. What's the best codec to use for later FCP editing?
On a slightly different topic, is there a best "universal" codec that can be edited in other popular NLE systems, e.g. Avid, Pinnacle, etc.?
    Thanks.

On a slightly different topic, is there a best "universal" codec that can be edited in other popular NLE systems, e.g. Avid, Pinnacle, etc.?< </div>
Read up on H.264, it's for distribution, not editing. The only codec that approaches platform agnosticism or universality is MPEG1 which is also useless as an image preservation or editing codec. After that, maybe plain ol' DV. There is a different flavor for each operating system but getting the files unwrapped and imported into all NLEs cannot be assumed.

  • I have 2 computers. Do I have to buy 2 separate downloads for each computer? Or can I save money and buy one download for both laptops.

I have 2 computers. Do I have to buy 2 separate downloads for each computer? Or can I save money and buy one download for both laptops.

Also, downloads are for only one platform, so the answer is yes only if both computers are windows computers or both are macs. To do one each you need the boxed version.

  • Cannot Find Codec for H.264

I am running on Windows XP and have downloaded the latest version 7.1.5 and it is just playing a white screen with audio but no video. The video codec for the videos used is h.264 which makes no sense to me because that codec should have been installed with the Quicktime download. Can anyone help me? I have also downloaded Divx for windows. Thanks

    Have a look here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H264#External_links
There are some links to H264 codecs. IIRC, installing a codec on XP ensures that both quicktime and window mean player should both use that codec. Googling H264 codec XP brings back loads of results also

  • Add P-ATA drives: "Driver is not intended for this platform" for IDE Channel

With the S-ATA drives in my sig everything has worked without problems for a long time...
But when I tried to add an old P-ATA deathstar drive as master on first primary IDE and a LITE-ON dvd-rom as master on secondary my Windows XP reports hardware problems. When I enter Windows the hardware auto wiz starts working and after a little while reports that two devices of type "IDE channel" have "Driver is not intended for this platform", hints from the status bar says Primary IDE Channel and Secondary IDE Channel are found before showing the error window.
I currently use these settings in BIOS:
    Native Mode
    ATA Configuration - SATA only
    SATA Keep enabled - yes
    PATA Keep enabled - yes
    PATA channel selection - both
Weird thing is both the deathstar and the LITE-ON drive seem to work great in Windows. Of course I want to get rid of the exclamation marks in my device manager though. I read elsewhere drive emulation software could be a culprit, and renaming/deleting atapi.sys could be a problem solver - but not for me it turned out. Anyone got other methods to try out?
    I've tried...
    -other BIOS settings
-putting both devices on the same channel
    -changing master/slave settings
-misc windows tricks, re-installing Intel Chipset drivers, uninstalling devices etc
    -uninstalling Daemon Tools and TrueCrypt
The only thing all this accomplished is the I now got 4 devices with exclamation marks instead 2 when starting out.
I posted the same question here but was recommended to start a new one:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=58269.0
This sounds exactly like what I got except I got the problems when adding drives, not upgrading bios:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=51681.0

I got rid of the problem
Turns out an older daemon tools version wasn't completely removed, I had to delete files starting with d346 from c:\windows\system32\drivers and then also search and delete registry keys found with relation to those files. Now my device manager reports no problems.
d346* is files that come with v 3.46, I figure they are named in the same way for other versions.
