A color that's impossible on the web?

I'm mostly a print and photography person, so I have a theory about what's going on here, but in practice, I'm SOOOO stumped! Can anyone help?
I have a logo, designed in Illustrator. It uses two flat spot colors (A pantone color and a Toyo color). The PMS color is a very bright, almost neon, peachy orange. (PMS 178 M). I need to create a version of this logo for the web that looks as color-accurate as possible to the designer's original intent.
When I "save for web and devices" in AI, the color (in both the "original" and "optimized" views) goes very pink or very dull taupe-y, no matter what GIF, JPG or PNG settings I try. When I use the SWF setting, the color fidelity is pretty good, but I'm wary of providing the client a SWF file for general use where they'd usually use a GIF or JPG. (though this might ultimately be the best answer).
I've tried tweaking the color in AI, using different color models, proofing it in different ways, etc. No matter what I do, I always get web-gamut warnings that offer me no reasonable options.
There's definitely no "web safe" color that is anything like this color. But, I thought you didn't have to be "web safe" (i.e. the 216 or 256 specific colors) anymore. Shouldn't I be able to simulate this with something like #FF8875? Why won't AI save it that way? Are there colors that browsers just can't get anywhere near in a GIF but they can in a SWF file? I thought at least some browsers (like Safari) were "color-managed". I am SO confused.
Any advice, explanation, etc. would be gratefully accepted!
Thanks.
Annie

no, browser color does not have limits that Flash color lacks. You don't have your color management set up right for web design.
It's impossible to know exactly what you are doing wrong, but the fairly standard naive approach to this is to work in Adobe RGB instead of sRGB, and to have your Mac monitor set to 1.8 gamma. Either of these of these guarantee color mismatches when you strip the profile, view in a non-color managed browser, or look at the image anywhere outside color management.
Recalibrate/profile your monitor with a 2.2 gamma
Set your RGB working space to sRGB.
NOW, you can choose your hex color to match your PMS or Toyo color.
Whether you tag your images or not depends upon your specific use of the image.

Yes, the tone is available and checked in iTunes under the Tones library.
Yes, it is also listed under the Tones tab for my iPhone, but it is grayed out.
Yes, tones are selected under "sources" in General Preferences, along with everything else.
SyncTones was NOT selected under the Tones tab for my iPhone. I did so and it synced.
    Thanks for your help!

I have over 11,000+ contact in my contact data base and it is getting really slow, especailly when it try to update with iCloud.  I need a  true multi-user contact management that do not involve the web. i.e. I prefer thety sync as most of the time, I do not have access to internet at all!  I would perfer it wil work with apple contact in some way, but I need a robust contact data base... sort of the older style CRM without the web, but with sneaker net ablity and true client server speed!  I really do not feel like wriitng it in a relationship data base and do the hard work and prefer to just pay and get a top notch product.  Address book server seems to be great except I am running moutain lion and it does not work under that OS!
Any suggesytino would be sincerely appreciated.

As my friends above have pointed out, the sweet spot on the JVC is the size of a postage stamp; move a few degrees in any direction and the image takes a trip into the dumper. Even that can be worked with except when you're cheek to jowl with a producer and dp - one of whom had extremely bad breath - looking over a cut for approval. The screen is incredibly reflective so you'll see something from the next county over. Other than these two rather large problems, the imaging of the JVC looks nice.
The Flanders are decent products and I would like to see them in use other than the horrid conditions at NAB, but I wouldn't go overboard with praise for them like some of the grazers do on the Creative Cow. They have a 30 day no questions asked return policy and that gives you a chance to use them which is nice. I really hate their big white logo, if I was to get one I'd have them remove it first.
$3,000 to $4,000? You really want my opinion? Find a good used Sony BVM or Ikegami HTM, something with low hours on the tube or something that has been recently retubed. Those animals are still out there. Maybe by the time it dies all this flat panel bs may have worked itself out.

  • Disappearing color profile when saved for the Web

    Hello.
I have a problem with the “Save for the Web” results using Photoshop CS6 running on Win 7 x64.
My photos are already in 8 bits and in sRGB and when I save for the Web I check the option “embed color profile”, uncheck “convert to sRGB”, metadata to “copyright and contact info”.
When I open the resulting photos in Photoshop, everything is fine as it recognizes the embedded color profile. Same thing when I open these files in Firefox, Safari or Chrome: the colors are correct.
Now, when I right-click on a file in the Win Explorer and look its properties, the line about the color profile is blank, as if there wasn't any. This doesn't bother me but the problem appears on my Website created with Joomla and using for the display a module, Responsive Image Gallery, which creates resized copies of the photos. At this point the copies have completely lost their color profile. I entered in contact with the module's support and they assured me that it preserves the embedded profile, so I come here to gather some information about how this “Save for the Web” embeds the color profile because may be I just didn't understand how it does and if it's different from the “Save as” way.
The fact I can't see the profile through the Win Explorer makes me think Joomla's module doesn't either.

Incredible how much gballard's site is famous! Lol. I use it for a while now and checked again right now with the three Web browsers and everything is all right.
As indicated in my first post, when saving for the Web I checked the “embed color profile” option. I already resized the file and converted it in sRGB first in Photoshop.
Yes it's pretty confusing to see some software not able to see the color profile when the file is saved with that option.
To illustrate, here are three screenshots from Windows' file browser => right-ckick on the file => properties => details:
Opening that “saved for the Web” file in PS, it's ok, the CP is recognized.
Opening it directly (from the file browser => “open with”) in Web browsers: ok in Firefox, Safari and Chrome (CP recognized in all).
Copying that file in my working site on localhost (no modification), integer it in Joomla's module gallery (which is CP aware) and then opening my site on localhost with Web browsers: ok in Firefox (because it considers a non-tagged file by default as beeing sRGB), NOT OK in Safari neither in Chrome.
Now, if I do the same with the “Save as” version of the file with embedded sRGB CP:
    PS: ok
Opened directly in Web browsers: ok in the three cases
Opened in Web browsers through my Joomla site on localhost: OK IN ALL THREE BROWSERS
Good point gator_soup: I'll post a bug report. I'm new here on the forum and thought Adobe's staff would post here.

  • Color shift when going to the web?

I spent 2 hours yesterday trying to get a graphic I had done in illustrator to export for use on the web. No matter what I did, the color always shifted - it looked like a gamma or lightening thing. The thing is, I'm not a noob to graphics or the web, I've been doing this professionally for over 10 years. But either CS3, or my recent move to the Mac, or something... has completely thrown a wrench in the works. The final response from Tech Support was that it was inevitable, and that was it. ?? What? That makes no sense.
Here's the lowdown: Illustrator document is set to RGB color space. I tried the standard color profile, and also tried setting it to unmanaged. I then tried both export and 'save for web'. I always get this shift. Everything is lighter. soo.. I then tried taking it over to Photoshop and saving from there. Strangely, it looked right in Photoshop, and then still wouldn't export without lightening everything.
Ultimately, nothing worked. What am I missing?

Here are a couple of good links about sRGB and color spaces in general.
    http://www.color.org/sRGB.xalter
    http://www.drycreekphoto.com/Learn/color_spaces.htm
The first one gets pretty technical after a few paragraphs; don't worry about the more technical aspects, just read the first part.
To make a long story short, the reason we create in or convert to sRGB before posting to the Web is that it has become a standard reference space for work that is intended to be displayed on monitors. No individual monitor behaves exactly as sRGB describes, but historically it was developed to be a good average color space that most monitors can achieve, or come close to.
When you go to choose a hex color for a web page, if you watch what you are doing, you will notice that the same color has a different hex code for every different color space you might try out. For instance, I have a client that uses PMS 109C in their logo and all their packaging. The only way I can select a hex color for that PMS color in a reproducible manner is to choose that color in a defined working space.
For the Web, we have all already agreed that working space should be sRGB. If I chose that color in my monitor's display space used as a working space, it would be different on every different machine I have available to me. I work on 4 different monitors, so I personally could potentially choose four different translations of that color. Which would be correct? None of them, because each monitor is different, each has a different profile, and so each would give me a different translation of the same color. So I need to make that translation while working in a standard working space. I can either select my color directly in sRGB, or I can select it in Adobe RGB (or another standardized working space that actually contains that color), and convert the entire file to sRGB before publishing to the web. Either approach works.
Since sRGB has the 2.2 gamma, you want to set your display to 2.2 so you won't see a lightening of the image when you view it without a profile.
why strip the profile? As far as I am concerned, you often do not have to, but under some circumstances will want to.
For photographs, illustrations, and paintings I leave the profile on jpegs, because color managed browsers will display them more accurately with the profile embedded. This is particularly true of Safari, for reasons I have already stated.
For graphics that need to match hex colors, I leave the profile off, because safari does not color manage hex colors. so Safari will set-up a mismatch between tagged jpegs and hex colors. If you need to match a graphic to hex colors on the page, it's better to leave the profile off.
If you are working on a page or a site with very large numbers of images, you may want to leave the profile off to save on disk space and download time as well. For me that is usually not a big consideration... but for some sites it may be.

  • How can i search for a color that is not in the color palette? (CS 5.5)

I have a client, that has used a certain color in a series of textfields throughout the document.
The color consists of all 4 CMYK colors and needs to be just Keycolor. However the color is not in the swatches menu, so marking it there and changing it won't work. I have downloaded a script that might have worked, but it could only find colors that were in the swatches palette. (Find / Change by Color / Overprint" version 1.2).
Ofcourse, creating a similar color and adding it to the swatches doesn't work.
Is there anyway that i can search for the color or does it really have to be done manually.
    Best regards

You can only search for real, actually existing swatches. No sweat: use "Add Unnamed Colors" in the Swatch panel dropdown menu to get a list of all of the manually applied colors.
Since you want to change all of them to the same color, you don't even have to use Search/Replace. Simply delete the new colors and select the one you need in the "Replace With" dialog that appears.

  • Changes in a name of a SRM user (CP), that are visible in the web interface

    Hello,
In our SRM user administration is a name spelled wrong. So I changed the name in SU01 and in the organisational plan.
But the name that is used in shopping carts in SRM, the value in "Central Person", didn't change.
Is it possible to change the name value of "Central Person" without making a new user object or in other words can I make changes in the name that become vissible in the SRM web-GUI?
    Thanks in advance.

  • How do i get back to a message after I access a link in the email that takes me to the web without having to go back to the main screen

How do I get back to my email after I have looked at a message and then clicked on the link in the email and was taken to the web to do something.  I want to be able to get back to my email, but so far I have to go back to the home screen and then into email again.
    Thanks

The only alternative to what you ask and what sberman tells you is to double tap the home button when you are done with the web and select the mail app from the multi-tasking bar. That will bring you right back to the mail message.

  • Cant change color on visited sites without changing background /foreground colors that hide options on the sitec

I want to change the color of visited sites, but am forced to set background and foreground colors which don't properly
show all of the colors for controls etc on many websites.
I have to uncheck the button to Allow pages to choose their own colors....
Google is a good example after doing a search, then change visited sites color, uncheck the allow pages button and then you can't see the search button and most of the options in the top right corner in google.
I am a little color blind, so can't differentiate blue and purple for links on visited sites...
    thx

I think the problem is that many sites use background colors to create buttons, so you lose that when you override the page's colors.
Maybe you could use an add-on to fine-tune colors instead of Firefox's all-or-nothing setting. I found a couple extensions that say they can change page colors, but I haven't tried them myself:
    * [https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/color-that-site/ Color That Site!]
    * [https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/colorific-1/ Colorific]
    * [https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/toggledocumentcolors-198916/ ToggleDocumentColors_]
    * [https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/color-toggle/ Color toggle]
For a truly custom approach to link colors, there are two general purpose ways to apply your own style rules to specific sites: the Stylish extension and a userContent.css files. You would need to set a preferred text ''and'' background color for visited and unvisited links so that you are guaranteed to be able to read the text.
Hope one of these fits the bill!

  • Is there a way to stop colors flattening when encoding for the web and DVD

Hi. I am in post prod on my first feature film, which has some great horror dream sequences, lit red and green in the Mario Bava tradition. They really do look stunning in the original footage, with highly saturated crisp colors (We had a really great cinematographer) But when I try to create clips for the web, the colors flatten a lot. They look better on my i-phone than my Lcd computer monitor. doing DVD outputs also looses something, but less so. It depends on the playback equip. My plasma TV and upscaling dvd player make them look fairly good. The footage is progressive scan 25 frames per sec HD. (16:9 cropped to 2:35:1) Does anyone know the optimum settings for web encoding have just used 310x710 pixels using H264 compressor at 3000 kbts per sec

  • How to secure a PL/SQL procedure that is called from the web browser

If you have ever seen the sample document management application, and tried to download a file that was stored in the system, you are probably familiar with the apex_util.count_click URL that is used to download the file. If you copy that URL and paste it into a new browser, you will not be prompted to login to download the requested file. I'm using SSO with Apex as a partner application. How can I secure a pl/sql procedure like this to redirect to the login page before beginning the download?
    Thanks,
    Kris

You can use the second method described here:
    http://apex.oracle.com/pls/otn/f?p=31517:15
You would use an application process instead of pasting the procedure call in the browser. In the case I describe, you don't need to grant execute to public on the download procedure.

  • Color shift between Ai and the web ... again

    Hi there,
Classic problem again ... color never seems to let me rest in peace
Well, I copied colors hex numbers from this palette
    http://www.colourlovers.com/palette/2077685/Stargazer
When I fill 5 squares in Illustrator, each one with the palette's colors, the 2nd (#592997) and the 3rd (#7208FE) are showing completely different in Illy (more magenta) than in Chrome (more blue).
I need help here since :
    - my screen is calibrated (5 days ago with Spyder3)
    - the color profile in Ai is set to sRGB
    - the document color mode is set to RGB
    - as far as I know, Chrome supports color management & the palette comes from a site about color which I suppose does things right
Is it the same for any of you if you try out ?
Any idea about what's going on ?
    Thanks.
(Sorry, it's being late, maybe I'm just tired & dizzy and just cannot see the evidence anymore )

    Oh good god !
    Did not know that !
I am so used to work with my mac on Safari and here I am on a PC using Chrome & Firefox which were both completely off after checking.
Apparently it is off by default in Firefox too.
I had to go to G. Ballard's website to see that I needed to set the following parameters as such :
    gfx.color_management.enablev4 = true
    gfx.color_management.mode = 1
And I also found that you can force Chrome to display according to the monitor's profile by using this trick
    http://www.binaryturf.com/enable-color-management-google-chrome/
    Well, now everything seems ok.
Thanks. I think I need to go to bed now
