A corrupted CoreStorage volume... what to do next?

Hi all,
I got my new computer (MacBook Pro 13-inch Early-2011 purchased from the Apple Online Store) with Lion installed. One of the best features in Lion is the revamped FileVault which uses CoreStorage to encrypt the whole disk.
Everything was fine until I got back from my vacation and found my computer unable to boot. I have tried everything, resetting from PRAM, etc but to no avail. I booted into single user mode and found several messages stating "CoreStorageFsck: <Bootstrap TXG#5771@1879> : cksum mismatch". When I booted into Recovery HD and tried to use Disk Utility to repair my disk, Disk Utility told me the repair failed, and the corestorage volume was corrupted.
I do have a backup, but that backup was made over 10 days ago on my old computer running 10.6.8. Since CoreStorage is a new feature in 10.7, my old computer isn't able to read data from the hard disk in my new MacBook Pro as well.
I am totally frustrated and do not know anything else I could try. I contacted telephone support but they told me to do a "Erase and Install", but I'd appreciate if I could retain the data in the 10 days.
Help wanted. Does anyone know how to fix the corruption when Disk Utility cannot?

I'd never trust FileFault without a daily or hourly clone, sorry I can't help with the present situation.

I installed the firmware upgrade on my color laserjet model 2605dn to resolve the red background printing problem with pdf documents. The install utility appeared to install it and then I got the little smiley face that I understood meant that it went the way it was supposed to. However, now the printer no longer displays lights or anything on the lcd display when powered up. WHen first turned on, it goes through at least part of the start-up check and then seems to hand and stop. when I turn it back off with the switch on the back, there is an audible click from somewhere inside as it powers down.
sooo.... am I correct in thinking that the firmware may be corrupted and that without the ability to reset or reload from the console, combined with no communcation with computer or network, that it's doa? Or does someone hav a suggestion on how to address? I'm not very knowledgable about printers, but am no stranger to electronics, instruments, etc... in other words, I have no clue what to try next, but am comfortable trying about anything...

Drive Partition and Format
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Open Time Machine preferences to select this drive for use as the backup drive. Turn on Time Machine.

Time machine needs its own partition to operate. So you are not going install a OSx Lion on that volume.
If there is enough room you may be able to partition the drive on the fly with DiskUtility
Are you saying you clean installed Lion and you are trying to move your user Data over with TM via the migration Assistant? Please explain.

Go into your Applications folder
Find the app named Install Mac OS X Lion.app
Move that app to the trash
relaunch The App Store
go to your Purchased list
Click on install next to Lion
It will re-download the installer

Rebuilding iTunes Library...What is the next step ?

I tried follwoing your advice.
I can do the Ctrl-A to select all songs in the iTunes libary.
I can right-click and select Delete,
but when I do, I do not get the 3 options that you mentioned
(Cancel, Keep Files, and Move To Recycle Bin)
I get a dialog box stating:
Are you sure you want to remove the selcted songs from your iTunes library?
These songs will also be remove from any iPod or iPhone which synchronizes with your iTunes library.
Why am I not getting the options you stated above ?
I have seen you oprions on a Mac at best Buy, but I am running an HP laptop under Vista Home Premium.
Then has a Remove or Cancel button to be clicked.
If I follow through with the above, will it wipe out my music library ?
How do I go about rebuilding the databse ?

Sorry DaleB, I have redone my library so many times, I forgot about this prompt. Just click 'yes'/'remove' to that question.
Reloading the library will only make your iPod resync again, thats all.

A related issue.
I made a copy (backup ?) of the Music folder in Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit OS, to my Desktop. If something corrupts the Music in iTunes, will this be a "good enough" backup to be able to restore the music by moving it back into the Music folder, or will soemthing be missing ?

What is it you want to do? If you want to clear your library and start it over with the same media files already on your computer, the way you are doing it is both more work and dangerous (you could lose files accidentally if you hit the wrong button).
Assuming you backed up your library elsewhere, you will have an "iTunes Music.itl" file, or at least you do with XP. I am not sure if Vista works any differently. This is the file that is the database file that contains all the info about what is in your library, playcounts, ratings, etc. If you don't have that backed up somewhere else with your library, you should do that. If you periodically back up just that file, you can rebuild your library assuming the media files are not lost.
So to clear our your current library, simply grab the iTunes Music.itl file in your iTunes folder and drag it to the desktop or the trash. Open iTunes and you should now see a blank library. Close iTunes, you will find a new iTunes Music.itl file has been created (representing the new blank library. To restore your old .tl file, simply drag your back up copy and overwrite the newly created blank library iTunes Music.itl file. That's it.
Alternatively, you can File -> Import the .xml file that is also created and maintained by iTunes in the same folder as the iTunes Music.itl file. But Apple does state the XML file doesn't quite have everything contained in the iTunes Music.itl file, although it isn't clear what exactly is missing, at least not to me.

Hi , and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
And sorry to report that OSX is more Widows like than ever, but….
If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS.

what do you have? Version of iPhoto? Of the OS? How is the passport connected to your Mac? What format is the passport (for the iphoto library it must be Mac OS extended (journaled) )? The iPhoto library is not and can not be on the cloud (maybe later with the Photos Application)

I have no idea what to do next?!

I am posting this here because I have no other ideas of what to do next. I purchased an item in October (a pre order item) and when I got it in December, I noticed it had issues and returned it to the stores. I used $115 in reward certificates to purchase this item. I never received the rewards issued back to my account. I have contacted the RZ Reward Customer Service more than 5 times. Each of those times, they assured me they would send it "to the back office". They themselves were not able to credit my account because it was such a large amount. I realize that. Everyone I have talked to said 3-5 days. I once talked with a nice lady that said my account was not linked and did something that made my points disappear, but then reappear. So that's all good... but still no points. In November, I purchased an item that was not in stock at the store for the 3X points night and my points never tripled like they should have. Each time I have contacted Customer Service about the rewards, I have also mentioned the 3X points issue as well. Today, I talked with a Rep who said she could not find the transaction and would now need to find the receipt. That's all good, cause I still have it (because of no resolution) but, I must ask, Why is this taking so long?! During this duration I have received 500 comp points for my trouble, that's nice... but there is about $125 in points missing from my account... and at some point I want to use them, Maybe not now, tomorrow, or next month... but when there is something I realize that I cannot live one more day without. First Timer – Can't get Win Xp Pro to Load – Blue Screens - What to do next??

This is my first build, and I have the following hardware:
Athlon64 939 3000+ Processor

After putting it together, I observed the CPU temps in the BIOS for a while (my concerns, now gone, are documented in another thread), and never noticed any other problems. I partitioned the hard drive using Partition Commander, from the CD.
Last night was the first time I tried to load Windows Xp Pro (have used 98SE on my old PCs), and it did not go well. Although I had loaded the Partition Commander S/W a number of times via the CD ROM drive, the first time I tried to load Win Xp, it wouldn’t boot up from the CD ROM drive. I had to try it a few times before it started (even though the CD ROM was set to first priority for booting in BIOS). Once started, when it was in the middle of loading files (not far into the entire process), I started getting errors with wording something like “Couldn’t load file XYZ, hit enter to retry, or cancel...”. After hitting Enter a few dozen times, it made it through that part of the process, but then later, I started getting blue error screens reading “A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage ...” I rebooted and the installation resumed, but every time but one (I must have tried it six times) I ended up at a blue error screen before it finished. At the bottom of these screens, there was always a line that read (but not always the same numbers):
“*** STOP 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0x804EAAB4, 0xEE7A8C80, 0x00000000)”. One time, there was also, after the first para on the screen the line “DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL”. Another time, it made it to the final (I think) “Saving Settings” part of the process, showing 5 mins left to go, and just hung.
Can someone help me figure out what these errors mean? I’m at a loss as to what to do next, and of course really want to get this thing up and running. I read another similar thread where people suggested the PSU was insufficient (he was using a 300W PSU), but I don’t think that is the issue here. I’m also sure I have the latest BIOS version (V1.4) for my motherboard, so that shouldn’t be an issue either.

This is a completely new install (new h/w and s/w) of Xp Pro w/SP2 incorporated (not an upgrade). Someone recommended removing one of the two memory sticks, and trying to load Xp afterwards, then reinstalling the 2nd stick after the install completes. I tried it tonight, after reformatting the partition, and the install went completely thru without a hitch the first time!!! I can't explain why it worked, but I guess there can be some kind of memory issue when you have two dual channel sticks during an Xp install. I have now reinstalled the 2nd stick, and so far, so good. Tomorrow I will run Memtest86 to see if that turns up any errors. By the way, how do you tell if it's truly operating as "Dual Channel"? Is there some way to tell?

If nothing helps, you need to contact Verizon for information for an exchange or refund. This is a user to user forum, not Apple.
Apple's policy for a refund or exchange is within 14 days of purchase. Verizon's policy may be different.
Definitely try restoring .. hopefully you won't have to go through the hassle of an exchange.

Hello, not certain, but turn the Camera onto Play if it has such a setting, does it show up in iMovie then?

In the early days of digital video editing, an export render could take hours! Not many applications are as hard on system resources as video editing, and rendering the final edit is probably the most system intense action of all.
Head on over to the Premiere Pro Hardware forum to see what sort of computer hardware the pros use for NLE (non linear editing), or to the PPBM5 site for a better look.
