A crazy font issue: Helsinki font

What is Helsinki font and where is it? Many web pages, help pages etc are showing up with garbage text. Copying and pasting into Textedit reveals the font as Helsinki. But that font cannot be found anywhere on the system??
I must have deactivated a necessary font, but I cannot find out what it is.
DUal 2.0 Ghz G5 Mac OS X (10.4)
PS I was sure I already posted this topic, but just cannot find it. Oh well -- maybe it was somewhere else.

If he can physically locate it, we could at least help him troubleshoot it.
That might be hard to do. Especially with cheap PC TrueType fonts. It's typical for programs like greeting card apps to dump a ton of fonts on your system that give you no clue what the font name is. That is, the internal name (which you see in your font lists) isn't the name the font itself is given. They're given stupid generic names like TTFONT343.TTF. Oh yeah, I know which font that is. :-P It's no better on the Mac side with these types of programs. They usually come with all of the fonts (sometimes hundreds) all dumped into one TrueType suitcase. So all you see is the one suitcase font which may be named something like "Greeting and banner fonts deluxe". But you of course can't see the names of all the TrueType fonts stuffed inside.

Crazy Font Problem! Help!

Hi All-
When I save a .pdf of my coverletter, the font does this thing where the font mostly disappears, a few lines turn white and one or two lines remain correct. I have no clue what is going on. I've tried to save it every way possible. It is the same font that I used throughout the entire coverletter, and it shows up fine in the header, etc.
Any clue Photoshop pro's????

Typically this is a display issue that's related to layers in your original Photoshop document.
Save a second version of your file, but before saving to PDF, flatten your image. This will usually ensure that your document displays correctly.
You can also change some settings when you save your PDF. Uncheck the Layers options when you go to Save As... and then uncheck Preserve Photoshop Editing Capabilities in the Save Adobe PDF dialog.

FF 6.0 on Mac OS 10.6.7 shows crazy font on some sites. Prefs fonts are not controlling the problem.

Many websites are fine but some (craigslist, google homepage, others) show a gothic font upon loading. I can't get it to change with the prefs settings. I re-installed FF but problem persists.

Help-iTunes Crazy Fonts

I opened up my iTunes yesterday and there is a strange unreadable font on almost everything. The only time it goes away is when I click on a playlist then it turns to english. I have searched on the boards and the closest I could come up with is a reference to having duplicate Lucida Grande fonts. Which I do. The posts suggested removing the duplicate font. Which the system will not let me do. I am logged on as administrator.
In searching mac help I find that you cannot delete a system font but there is a function called "Resolve Duplicates" so I did that and the duplicate Lucida Grande font is still there but switched off. Unfortunately this has not fixed the problem. When I log in as a different user and launch iTunes it is displaying ok so the problem is definately with this admin account.
Any suggestions before I hit the Genuis Bar?

That is definitely a font issue and not iTunes. It's simply trying to display the info, and your fonts folder is indicating some strange font as default for iTunes. Take a look at fonts you added right before this started....dump 'em.

Crazy fonts in Safari

I just recently installed Office:mac 2008 for my iMac and the next time I opened up Safari, my fonts went ballistic on some pages (i.e. Google, Yahoo). When I say "ballistic," I mean numbers/letters typed over by other numbers/letters and other characters are thrown into words. The fonts on other pages are fine. Any thoughts?

CRAZY FONTS! Garbled garbage in Safari and help files. How do I fix it?

I wish I could post a screen shot.
Some pages in my browser, particularly in Wikipedia, display the bulk of the content in numerals that look like fractions--0 over 02 8996 to the 4th--with an occasional hyperlink (bold, blue, and/or underlined) appearing in regular Latin characters. If I copy the nonsense and paste it into anothe app like excel, it displays in Latin characters and I can read it. And that has been my workaround. But I'm getting tired of it. WHY does Safari (and today, a help system, which wasn't ANY help at all) display these fractional numbers instead of alphabetic letters? And how can I stop it? It doesn't appear linked to the font I choose to display in.

The problem is due to an underlying bug in the WebKit.framework, which is the framework Safari, Mail, and other applications use to display HTML content. The bug causes the glyphs from Fraction style fonts to be displayed in place of the plain-style glyphs, even when the web page specifies the plain style should be used.

Crazy preview issue with PS CS5

Hey! I have a rather odd issue that I'm dealing with on 2 separate digital painting projects
on my desktop I have my psd file, and I often throughout the day will hit space bar to do a quick preview of the image.
today I had been using cmd+c and cmd+v on a selection I wanted on a new layer, but it wouldn't do it. so I saved the image, and restarted PS, and that seemed to do the trick. -- I was able to copy/paste just fine.
So the issue is, when i hit space bar on my desktop to view the image, I am now only seeing that piece that I was trying to copy/paste!!
the rest of the image on the thumbnail is there, and all of the layers are visible inside the document.

We've submitted it to Apple, and they'll eventually get it fixed.

Network Manager driving me crazy (3 issues)

Hey guys I'm new here, hope you can help me
nm-applet is driving me crazy!
First issue: when I boot nm-applet doesn't appear in my tint2 eventhough I'm connected. This don't appear all the time, it's random. I have to kill it and restart it to be able to see it.
I use openbox and I have this in .config/openbox/autostart
(sleep 3 && /usr/bin/nm-applet --sm-disable) &
Second issue:
I selected the save option for the password of my vpn but it won't save it... Or wait, yes it will.. But not all the time. It asks me for the pass sometimes, and sometimes not
Third issue:
I thicked the "automatically connect to vpn for this connection" but guess what... It won't
Any idea about how to troubleshot this. I'm seriously considering pacman -R network-manager and pacman -S something else

1st issue: run nm-applet from the command line (take it out of openbox's start file wherever that is) after you log in to see what's going on.
2nd issue: do you have gnome-keyring installed? I believe it should be started with by networkmanager when it's needed, but you may need to figure out how to start it on your own. I don't know how.
3rd issue: I believe the automatic connection to vpn on a specific network is triggered by networkmanager-dispatcher which is just part of the networkmanager package, but is its own separate service. When you enable/start NetworkManager via systemctl, it should enable/start 3 services - the dispatcher is one of them. Do you have that running?
I may be wrong about some of this; it's been a while since i've used NetworkManager.

Help with crazy printer issue? ;)

My printer is about 2.5 years old and just a few days ago started acting crazy. It seemed to have started when we had a client try and send a fax and it never came across. There was an error message that kept coming up... something like "wrong size paper selected?", although the fax was a standard size that fax never came through. We since had friends send faxes and they do come through. But after that.....
Then it started taking a long time to communicate between our computers and the printer. Typically it has printed immediately when we hit the print command. now it takes several minutes..... Like it's tired and thinking a lot and confused. (a lot like me these days, interestingly - must be another forum however ) Anyway we turned it off with the power button on the front of the machine as we have often done, and a message came on that said something like "this machine was not properly powered down, use the power button - which we had. At one point when it was trying to print the fax (which was not two sided) it started to pull a paper out that had just printed and pull it back into the machine. I've never used the two sided feature but figured, oh that's interesting....but not helpful.
I hate to buy a new printer this one is only 2.5 years old. Out of warranty but really? Can't it be fixed? I think we had a PGE power outage over the weekend before the fax came through maybe the power outage impacted it? Is anything going on astrologically that I should know about? (this is a joke and I know another forum) We have four computers that are networked and all 4 computers have the same long delay when printing.

You said you had a PGE power outage over the weekend, is your printer connected with a USB cable or is it setup wirelessly? I know you said the computers are all networked, I just wonder what connection type you use for the printer. Also, what printer model do you have? How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?
Do you currently have the printer connected directly to a wall outlet, or is it in a surge protector or power bar? If you are currently using a surge protector/power bar all this time and you feel it is not the cause, please connect it to a wall outlet just so we can eliminate the power source as the root cause. Crazy Software issues seem to point to Adobe Creative Suite 5

Using Windows Vista Home Premium. INtel Core i7 CPU. 6 G RAM, 64 Bit operating system, Creative Suite 5
I started having trouble...weird things happening on my computer a year ago. Silverlight plug in crashes. Adobe Acrobat crashes. Firefox crashes. Word crashing repeatedly. Keyboard skipping every 3-4th letter or freezing. Mouse having a mind of its own, needing extra coaxing to go where I wanted it to go.
I have a custom built PC. I've taken in to the guys that built it to check for viruses. They found some but no big deal. They didn't fix my problems. The strangeness happens randomly so I limped a long for a few months and then get frustrated and try to solve the problem again.
I have replaced my keyboard/mouse combo and that slowed down the issues but they still persisted randomly. I have uninstalled all adobe products and reinstalled...no luck. Word crashed more than anything at that time so I uninstalled and reinstalled Microsoft Office. No improvement.
I have purchased a new graphics card...no help. When photoshop started doing weird things, like when I crop, changing the resolution of my document to 1, or no longer letting me re-size anything, freezing and crashing multiple times in a day, I took to the last resort.
I had the whole operating system uninstalled and reinstalled wiping my computer clean. The computer guys said this would fix my problems 100% certainty. As soon as I got it home, the keyboard was possessed again! I unplugged all hardware except monitor and (new) wireless mouse/keyboard and the only software installed was Office and Creative Suite. I still had problems. Firefox and Photoshop are freezing and crashing all the time. What else can I try????
My suspicion is that Adobe is just not playing nice with my system or any other application.

Unlikely. Whatever you see are probably driver issues with your USB and keyboard controller or even possibly physical damage on the plugs or controller chip, including voltage issues due to a poor power supply or a fused resistor or capacitor on the motherboard.

anybody having the same problem with their trackpad? mine was bought last july 2011 and this crazy trackpad thing started a few days ago. It keeps moving, opening new folders, swiping through desktops. is this because of an update? advice anyone? thanks!

Crazy time issues

In March another user reported the following:
I have a crazy problem. I CANNOT use the Apple server to set my time! It always defaults to GMT (no other choices!) If I set the time to Columbus, Ohio EST, the clock keeps the correct time but the clock icon goes to GMT time! This will not change! I have to set the time manual and CANNOT use the set time auto feature??? I've reinstalled the OS. Used the utility from the DVD. Zapped the PRAM. Nothing works??? Other Machines using OS 10.5.6 work fine. Machines with 10.4.11 also are fine. This Powerbook LT is the only problem. The machine is rock solid and has NO other problems???
I have much the same problem now - defaults to GMT whether I like it or not.
It is many hours out - not just DST.
Does someone have a solution now? Any ideas?

Sorry, profile is old. I am running OS 10.5.6 on a new 24" iMac.
I believe I have tried ALL the permutations - Choose location and then change time to manual (but the dimmed auto time stays as the wrong time/date!)
- Choose location and change to auto time, which shows up immediately as the wrong time. I go back to Locations and it has defaulted back to GMT.
Even when I set the time to manual (correct time & date) our email programme Eudora sends emails on the auto time!

Crazy lag issues upgrading from OS 10.58 to OS 10.6, what gives?

I've just upgraded to OS 10.6 from OS 10.5.8 on my 3.06ghz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac and pretty much everything has slowed down considerably. I've got 4gigs and 800 mhz of memory and my computer was lightning fast running 10.5 so I'm pretty sure that's not the issue.
My main problem is that I'm no longer able to "spacebar" preview any files without extremely long lag times. Trying to preview video, music, and .PSD files takes 5 minutes to load in some cases even for a 10mb file. I'm in the process of editing over 200 video clips and this has basically prevented me from using this machine at all.
Additionally I made the mistake of deleting Quicktime 10 because the interface was horrendous and sticking with Quicktime 7 since I had already purchased a pro code for it. Even though Quicktime 7 is still on my computer all of my audio and video files are now opening in the "Grapher" utility by default, which is extremely annoying and ridiculous. How can I make Quicktime 7 my default again?
Anyone have any idea what would cause these issues and more importantly what can I do to resolve them?

Try restarting in Safe Mode, this clears some of the caches it's possible one has become corrupted. You should also Repair Disk Permissions using Disk Utility (Applications - Utilities - Disk Utility) and I'd also recommend doing a SMC reset (maybe even 2) and reset the PRAM.
SMC RESET
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
Release the power button.
Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
PRAM RESET
Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.

Firmware 6.0.2 crazy draining issue

Please help is my phone faulty or software unplugged my phone this morning had 100% battery life after 3hours on standby had only 40% battery life remaining what is going on.

I tried DFU restore via iTunes and hard reset and even taking into apple store for a replacement phone same things happens once I updated to 6.0.2. I ran out of ideas what to do next I wish apple could update on this matter seems like I not the only one with this sort of issue.

Lots of crazy internet issues

I seem to be having a massive amount of random internet issues after upgrading to Leopard. The first and most apparent is that Mail and iChat both get randomly disconnected and Mail often insists that it cannot connect to the IMAP server one moment, only to work perfectly again within a minute while no other internet services (Safari, Transmission) are affected.
Safari has decided that http://news.bbc.co.uk is actually http://www.apple.com. I kid you not. I try and look at BBC news and I am consistently redirected to Apple's website. news.bbc.co.uk/iphone goes to apple.com/iphone. I've never seen anything like it before in my life.
Mail's RSS feeds seem to randomly disappear. No trace of their existence is left. After switching the 'default RSS reader' preference to Safari and then back to Mail, they re-appear - with all articles unread.
On the whole, quite a number of confusing bugs.

So, what happens if you go here: http://212.58.226.73/ ? That's the IP address that news.bbc.co.uk is supposed to point to. I found that by looking in Tiger's Network Utility as my Leo is still on it's way to me. If you want to know what that IP is before going there ( a good idea ), you can put that in the lookup tab on Net Util and see what comes back.
If the IP works, then DNS is hosed somewhere. See what Net Util says news.bbc.co.uk translates to. If it the number above, it's a Safari thing. If it's apple (starts with 17 IIRC) then it might be fixable by flushing the DNS cache though I don't know how to in Leo (shouldn't be hard).
If you did an upgrade install, you might want to reinstall using Archive and Install.
