A dead laptop

It started out with everything was running slower. The beachball would come up for anything I did on my laptop. The next day it wouldn''t start up at all. It get's as far as the gray screen, then shuts down. I've tried all the suggestions on this forum. I just started up from the Apple disk and First Aid can't repair the drive. It won't install a new system because it can't see the hard dirve. What is the next step? Is this my hardrive gone bad or logic board? Any advice is appreciated. I backed up everything but my iTunes music so I'll lose at least 500 or more songs.

OK, your hard drive is overflowing, which in turn can cause a bad directory, which in turn can cause Disk Utility to be unable to repair it, and cause trouble to the power management kernel extensions and other kernel extensions to speak properly to the machine.
Never let your 80 GB hard drive get more full than 12 GB free.
See this FAQ on what can fill up hard drives:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=122973&tstart=10
Given the fact you haven't backed up your music, you are in a catch-22 situation here. You still don't know if the directory alone is at issue, or there is an issue with the hard disk. A 2 year old notebook hard drive can easily fail. I've seen even a 6 month old notebook hard drive fail. How much is that music worth to you, and how much would you be willing to spend to ensure that it is safe?

  • Transfer data from hard drive on a dead laptop

I have a dead laptop that contains a hdd2183 y hard drive that appears to be a non-standard connector.  It is not IDE nor is it SATA.  The drive has a FEMALE receptacle instead of male pins or blades.  The CONNECTOR that attaches to the drive has a male blade that inserts into the hard drive receptacle.  I can't find anything on the internet about any such configuration, and I need to get the data off this drive, but no way that I can find to turn it into an external drive.  I COULD take the connector out of the laptop and MAKE a cable or convert it to either SATA or IDE, IF I knew which contact was supposed to go to which pin on the corresponding connector.
Anybody know anything about this?  None of the standard enclosures or conversion devices fit this drive.
    This question was solved.

    Hi,
I think the non-standard connector you describe can be removed.
Remove the HDD from its metal casing as shown in the image below.
Once done, you should find the connector can be removed from the HDD by sliding it off as shown in the lower diagram ( it may take some gentle persuasion ).

  • How to deauthorise DEAD LAPTOP? :(((

    Hi everyone,
My laptop has given up completely last night and we tried to save it but didn't succeed so now it is dead.
It happened very unexpectedly, I haven't even had time to save my data (we removed the harddrive and just saving whats left over it) so therefore I haven't had a chance to deauthorise my laptop as my primary iTunes source for my iPhone.
How can I deauthorise it and add a new laptop?
I don't even want to think about what happened with my previous iPhone backups stored on the dead laptop's harddrive :((((
Your answers and help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Andrea

    Hi Andrea,
iTunes will let you authorize up to 5 computers to playback your music and videos that you have purchased from the iTunes store, so if you have not yet authorized that many, you should be OK once you get things up and running again.
If you have authorized 5 computers so far, check out this support document which should address your questions: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1420
Hope you get things working again soon!

  • How can I deinstall CS6 from a dead laptop

My laptop recently died due to a cafe accident - I've installed CS6 on my new laptop but now need to install the second copy (allowed two) on to my office computer - is there some way of  deinstalling from the dead laptop? I guess this is fairly common but I can't seem to find an answer anywhere.
Or is there some way of de-regstering the copy of CS6 on the dead laptop. I can't find any other way to contact adobe support about this so if anyone has any hints that would be much appreciated.

You need to contact Adobe Support either by chat or via phone when you have serial number and activation issues.  They have the ability to deactivate the lost installation.
Here is a link to a page with options to help make contact:

Depending how far you want to go to preserve everything.
The keep everything and spend a bit of money way:
Depending on the type of HDD you have you can get a connector that plugs directly into the HDD and the other end plugs into a USB slot. The computer will recognise it as a normal drive then you just copy all the iTunes stuff back to your main computer.
Or alternatively you could use what you have on your backup drive and copy that to the main iTunes folder.

  • HT1920 itunes library on dead laptop.

Long story short. Son had full amount of devices being used and now after his/my laptop went dead awhile back i made my own account. But wanted to know how to access my old library if possible.

You may be able to redownload some/all of your past purchases (you won't be able to download your own music e.g. copied from CDs unless you had subscribed to iTunes Match and uploaded it to it) via the Purchased link under Quicklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store homepage on your computer's iTunes - what you can redownload will depend upon what country that you are in (music, films, tv programmes can't be redownloaded in all ; audiobooks and ringtones are one-time only downloads) and whether the item is still in your country's store (content providers occasionally remove things).

  • Dead laptop - bad wifi card or ???

    Hi all,
Oddball question: I have a Lenovo t410i that is completely dead. About two years ago, I dropped a bit of water on the keyboard, and something got fried so that the keys wouldn't type correctly anymore. When I went to replace the keyboard, I accidentally ripped one of the cables from the Intel Wifi Card (model 622anhmw). When this happened, the laptop would not power on. After two years, I am finally sitting down to try and fix this, but before I go buy a new wifi card (the cable was ripped out with the solder connection), I wanted to ask if anyone out there knew whether simply replacing the wifi card will actually solve the problem.
Seems like it's a pretty strange thing for the laptop to route all power through this tiny card, but I've seen stranger things.
    Thanks!

My WAG is a blown fuse (if there are any in that laptop) or something else that got yanked on and shorted when the cable was ripped out.
You'll need one of the members, mods, or gurus her on the forums with repair experience to offer advice.  Sorry, it's above my pay grade.

  • Dead Laptop??? Please help...

Hi there, I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop, afraid not sure of the model number.  I was having trouble with available space on the C:/ - the last warning message I received was that I only had 1 MB left.  I was in the process of trying to remove some programmes to make some space available when the laptop went completely dead and I haven't been able to turn it on ever since, i.e. pressing the power button does nothing at all.  When plugging in the charger, the charge light no longer lights up on the laptop.  I am going to try the old "turn laptop upside down" trick tonight, then also buy a new charger to check that - but does anyone else have any solutions?  Could the battery be completely dead? (we normally use the laptop with the charger on all the time, not ideal, I know).  Any suggestions much appreciated!!

try to remove completely the battery and use only the ac power to turn it on.

  • Dead laptop after BIOS update - dv6500

I have a HP Pavilion dv6500 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC. I started bios update recommended by HP support team, left the notebook alone and came back few minutes later to find that the laptop was off. When I turned on, power light came on briefly and went back off, and then light came on briefly again and went back off. It repeated this cycle indefinately. The screen is entrely black the whole time. Virtually, the notebook is dead. Anyone had this kind of problem and was able to sovle it?

Try install BIOS from a pendrive!!! First, you need to find your mobo's model number, (my dv5's 3600, cause its mobos name Quanta 3600), you dont wrote your lappys specifications.
Nvm, download another bios version, extract the "sp????.exe" file with WinRAR, found there a .fd or .WPH file (it’s BIOS source file, if you find 2 of them, try the upper one first), rename it to ????.BIN (where ???? is the mobo number of DV6500 laptops), copy to USB flash drive, remove the battery and power cable from laptop, press the WinKey+B combination on the keyboard, insert the USB flash drive, insert power cable, turn the notebook on while keep those keys pressed, and after some minutes of beeping you have a good working BIOS installed. It worked for me.

  • How to import bookmarks from the hd of a dead laptop using Windows 8.

    Hello,
I have tried the other solutions listed for this issue but none of them seem to work. My profile folder for the older version of firefox is empty, and I don't find APPDATA or any .json files even when files are unhidden. I would be grateful if you could provide an alternative method for importing old bookmarks from an external hd to a new computer than runs Windows 8.
    Many thanks in advance.

    Hi,
Please try this: Open your current profile folder via Firefox '''Help''' ('''Alt''' + '''H''') > '''Troubleshooting Information''' > '''Show Folder''', exit Firefox, and delete '''places.sqlite''' into the Recycle Bin. Next, open the drive letter corresponding to the external HD (usually it would be listed after your current drives i.e. if your laptop has C and D drives, the attached external HD would start at E), browse to '''E:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles''', open the folder inside, copy the '''places.sqlite''' into your current Firefox profile folder opened earlier via Firefox, and start Firefox.

  • Can I safely unplug my Lacie from my dead laptop?

    Hello,
My powerbook finally died (blinking question mark / folder icon on startup) after months of pinging and a day of whirring. (Tech store said it needs a new hard drive, logic board, and OS.) I have everything backed up on a Lacie firewire external HD, but FORGOT TO EJECT IT during my last precious minutes with my laptop.
How can I safely unplug the Lacie from the laptop? I've tried booting from a Disk Warrior CD, and the startup CD, but I can't get to my desktop.
You geniuses are always appreciated, thanks

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
It sounds like your system has already died. Just unplug the firewire/USB connection to the drive.

  • Dead laptop - need to transfer iTunes to new one

Our IT guy spilled water on my laptop and POOF it's gone. Hard drive saved tho.
Have new laptop and want to be able to transfer my iTunes from the other laptop to this one, maintaining my playlists, etc.

  • Dealing with a dead laptop. Help needed

I am a college student and my acer computer just died on me. It has been having problems for the longest time the plg only works when it wants to and the battery won't hold a charge. Now the computer won't even charge. So i have ordered a dell but is there a way that i can get all my info from the acer on to the dell without the acer even being able to turn on. And the acer is still under warranty but the customer service is horrible and i can never get on agnet to really help me order the parts i think  need.

Hi there and welcome to the Community! It is very sad to hear about you laptop biting the dust. Your local Geek Squad can transfer the data from the Acer to the Dell without much problem, assuming the hard drive is in working order. Prices start at $99 depending on how much data you need transferred.
