A dedicated Logic website (ala Pro Tools)...what say you?

If you've read my post regarding Spectrasonic's free RMX quicktime tutorials or Luis G's post offering free tech support to users on this forum, you may now be thinking along the same lines as I am...why isn't there a dedicated website (not just an Apple discussion page) for registered Logic Pro users?!
With enthusiasts like Luis and myself offering our skills for free, how much effort would it really take on Apple's part to get the ball rolling? I am envisioning a site akin to Digidesign's (imagine a monthly Logic E-Zine like Pro Tools has for their users?!) but with a focus on Quicktime tutorials featuring tips and tricks for all registered users.
At the very least, Apple could dedicate some web space to a new user community (ala Spectrasonics or Native Instruments). However, if Apple chose to get more actively involved, it would be to everybody's benefit.
If you'd like to see something like this happen, please speak up by either showing your support in this thread or sending your feedback to Apple.
Thanks for listening

I find that soooooo amusing and @ our facility we had quite a few laughs about this great word of advice - The greatest thing was that the advice came from the operator of the site - who supposedly a LOGIC CERTIFIED PRO!!!!
And he was correct, IMO.
I agree with tbird here: unless your hard drives get extremely full, defrag will do almost nothing. Optimization - which is a different issue - might not do much either. If your drives are allowed to become full, that's bad practice anyway, and simply freeing up 30%+ will do some good.
You might want to read this:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25668
and a huge amount of bench mark reports, whilte papers and testing resources on line from drive manufacturers, almost all of which will explain why defragging large drives is p*ssing in the wind.

  • Best feature of Yoga 3 Pro? What would you change?

For those who have Yoga 3 Pro systems,  what do you think are the best features after having used it for a while?
What new features or changes would you want to see on future models?
    Thanks!

    Hello,
I have mainly used my Yoga as a document creation station (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, etc.), so I am looking at it from that perspective.
    The Good:
Screen is bright and high enough resolution so that I can see a full page of information.
System does not weigh much (but see below)
    The Meh:
function and meta keys missing. making it harder to use Microsoft Office
yet another keyboard layout to learn
no TrackPoint (I find the touchpad so abhorrent that I use a Lenovo N700 wireless mouse)
    Micro HDMI port
yet another one-off power supply connector
I'm concerned about how this notebook computer will last over the long-term; while it seems fine, so far, it is so thin that I'm concerned it is not very durable
the external AC adapter (see below)
    The Asks:
Frankly, I would be happy to have a thicker, heavier unit.  Adding a few millimeters to the thickness and a few 100 grams to the weight would be fine by me.  It would make the unit appear more solid and less likely to break.
Can I have te function keys back, please?  Also meta keys (PrtScn, ScrollLock, SysReq, etc.)
Can you please standardize on a power connector and use it across multiple lines and models?
Standardize on one video conector so each laptop doesn't have to get a bespoke set of adapter dongles.  My preference would be MiniDisplayPort, as adapters for that are much easier to locate than for Micro HDMI.
The "wall wart" style AC to DC transformer is very small and does not take up a lot of space.  It is also impossible to plug into many AC outlets that use decorative outlet covers, like my local coffeeshop chain does.  As a result, I now have to carry an additional short AC power extension cord with my notebook computer.  Frankly, I'd just rather have something like Lenovo's own Ultraslim AC adapter, with a detachable AC line cord.  As an added bonus, if I travel to a new country, I can just get a new AC line cord conformal to local power outlets, and be up and running in no time.
Recovery media would be nice.  Even DVDs are okay, since external USB DVD±RW disc drives are plentiful and inexpensive.
That is all I can think off off the top of my head.

    Aryeh Goretsky

What Carolyn says is correct. You can, however, share an Internet connection with your iPhone wirelessly by turning in Internet sharing (found in System Preferences > Sharing.) If your MacBook Pro is already using a wireless connection, you can just connect to the same wireless network it is using.
    Best of luck.

  • Should I buy the WRT610? What say you Linksys???

I am in the market for a new wireless router and found majority of the reviews out on the web to point me in the direction of the new wrt610n. Here is the problem that I have seen so far. I come to the site here and all I see from WRT610N owners is how many issues they are having with this router. I also see a ZERO lack in response from Linksys in this matter which is very discerning.
Linksys are you there??? How about some info on whats going on with this latest product of yours? Has these issues been looked at or does everyone have to wait for the next release of the product... What does a guy have to do to get a decent wirless N router without heading over to apple (no offense meant to apple people).
So in short why Should I buy this product? Feature set looks great but is that all this router is all looks and nothing else? What say you?

This is a community forum.  As far as I know, the only Linksys employee here is the forum moderator, and he rarely answers questions.
The forum is designed to help people solve their router issues.   So naturally, the vast majority of the threads contain reports of various router problems.  You should also consider that the most popular routers have the most postings, not because they are bad routers, but because many (often inexperienced) users are using those routers.
I would estimate that about 75% of the router problems are actually just "user error", that is, not understanding how to setup your router and network properly.  This category also includes users who insist on trying to push the limits of the router, for example, trying to use a brand new (cutting edge) WRT610N with their Windows 98 computer, using a wireless b adapter with an 8 year old driver.   (In theory, this should work, but in reality, there are often problems.)  Another 15% stem from poor wireless connections caused by such things as overcrowding in the 2.4 GHz band, buildings that have "radio dense"  walls  (i.e. walls that have building materials that are hard to penetrate), and the fact that the wireless n standard is not yet finalized (this causes some incompatibilities).  The last 10% of the threads might truely be problems that Linksys could potentially fix.  Linksys generally gets blamed for far more than the problems they are actually causing.
The good news about Linksys is that they have this forum available (Not all router manufacturers run a forum), and it is widely used, so there is a lot of router info here.     Also, to my eye, Linksys seems to have the best documentation of any brand of router.  The other thing is that, especially with newer routers, Linksys does appear to be actively working to correct firmware flaws, as evidenced by their postings of updated firmware.
As to whether or not the WRT610N is best for you, that really depends on a lot of factors including  (1) what other wireless equipment do you own (is it wireless n, g, or b ? ) ,  (2)  how fast is your Internet connection?   (3) how are you planning to use your wireless n?  game play?  large file transfer?  ordinary web surfing?  (4)  do you have any special networking needs (VoIP, video cameras, web servers), or do you just need to surf the web?  (5) Are you willing to buy additional equipment, such as wireless n adapters for your computers?  (6) If you already own a router, what is the make and model?
Please describe you networking equipment, and the planned network workload, in detail.

  • Integrating my Logic tracks with Pro-Tools

I'm involved in arranging/producing a 12-song cd project...all my arrangements are in Logic 8, and they include several instances of EXS24 soft-synths. My small home-studio is not equipped for recording drums so we're going to track drums (& we'll track bass at same time) at a local pro studio which uses Pro-Tools...
...what is the best way to export my tempo-tracks, vocal-work-demos & soft-synth keybd parts to the studio's pro-tools files?...note that some of my tunes incorporate tempo changes.
And what is the best way to bring those drum & bass trax into my Logic?
    Thanks, Brian

oh yes, on a new Mac Pro...surely, but what are your experiences with these combination?
I´m using 48 Channels I/O with many outboard equipment on a HD 3 Pro Tools DAE ,,, Logic 7 is running and the DAE maschine is working...:))) cool what?
now we must talk about "all native" to use Pro Tools Hardware and Logic 9 because the 2 "Legends" are not able to create a stabile contact since 2004 in DAE mode...
now I`m interested what user, who worked with logic in DAE Mode ....- whats the way?
    regards

  • Logic Express or Pro Tools

I am currently considering purchasing Pro Tools with and MAudio firewire interface. I am intrigued by the ads for Logic because they promote "edit your music to Quicktime Movies". That appeals to me because I do alot of slideshows. I am mainly just a video hobbyist/ex musician. I would like to get some stuff recorded for fun and maybe get my kids into playing music as well. Can anyone tell me what they really enjoy about Logic that you think I should know. I have a G4 power book that I seems to keep up nicely with everything I run on it.

I use a Presonus Firepod which does me very well. If the Firepod is out of budget, have a look at the Firebox. I have just finished doing a quite high profile job on a MOTU 828mk2, which I would strongly advise, but which is also nealy 600 quid. The great thing about Forepods is that they have 8 XLR/phone inputs on them. Edirol get great reviews. I know that the FA 66 is a great soundcard, and I know many who will swear by it. They are great value for money, and I reckon sound really like they should cost much more.
David's time sig thing is very important and thank you David for adding it, otherwise, although you get good sync with your frames, you have very little idea which second you're in hehe. If you want other things like 29.97 drops and non-drops, well, all I can say is good luck, and I cannot think of a work-around. Good luck! Best, Fred

  • Logic Express to Pro Tools for mixdown

    Hi!
Really sorry if this topic has been covered before, but all I can find on the various Logic boards I know of are ways of doing this in Logic Pro that aren't available in Express.
My band recorded an EP in Logic Express, which was great, but the engineer we'd like to use to mix it is Pro Tools-only. I know Pro Tools can load up AIF files, but the problem I have is that each track has different start and end points. If I gave him the individual tracks as is, we'd be spending all day synching them up.
I've thought of two ways I can prepare the files for him. Please let me know if they're ********.
    1) Setting the fader at unity (0) and bouncing each track individually to a 24 bit WAV or AIF file while the rest are muted.
    2) Manually cutting and pasting "fake" beginnings and endings of audio information to each track, then using the Glue tool to create a new, merged track. This way, I figure, each track should be in perfect synch with the rest.
    Any help appreciated. Thanks! Rufe.

    Hi,
    half ok,
bounce one by one to a folder (mute the other tracks) from the start to the finish, PCM 24 bit (44.1 if you going to make cd's), WAV, SDII or AIFF,
that way, all files start and finish in the same spot, Inside Protools you cut the silence parts and don't forget to place a dither plug-in in the master-fader.

    Jorge

  • Macbook Air or Macbook Pro? What do you think?

I am currently in my last year of high school and will be off to university next year. I am thinking of getting a Mac but i'm not sure which one. I am just wondering if what do you guys think? Macbook Air or the Pro one? I will be mostly using it for school work and for university work on September. As well as for personal use. Thanks

You should also ask this in the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air forums. This is the forum for the white and black plastic MacBooks that were discontinued in 2010. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.

  • Opening Logic Files with Pro Tools/Mbox 2 Micro to Use 'Beat Detective'

    Is this possible?
Just wanna tighten up some acoustic drum tracks
    with Beat Detective.
If so, will I be able to use the new Mbox 2 Micro?
    Thanks a bunch...

this is the correct procedure, as stated make SURE they all start from '0' and that you have the correct tempo entered in protools, and not JUST in the transport bar, but in the main tempo track itself.
also, im assuming you know the limitations of PT LE's beat detective (only one stereo or mono track at a time) unless you have the Music Prod or the Complete Production Toolkit. but there are workarounds to make it work, youll have to check the Digi user confrence boards for that. the to go back to logic you just consolidate the files starting at '0' and export them out.

  • 2 displays for Mac Pro. What do you recommend? What do I need?

I have an older Mac Pro (2007ish - Model Identifier: MacPro1,1) with a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT graphics card. I currently use an old Apple 22" Cinema Display (1 generation - clear plastic style). Anyway, I want to upgrade my display and switch to a dual monitor setup. So I'm looking for two displays in the 22-24" range. I have some questions about what & how.
First, will my graphics card support two displays? If not, what do I need instead?
Second, what displays do you all recommend? (I'm a graphic & web designer) My budget would be in the range of about $1000 per display.
Lastly, I was really hoping to hold out for the new Apple displays but Apple doesn't seem to be moving very fast in that arena. I've actually been waiting a long time for the upgrade and now the whole mini-display port thing has me wondering what to do.

I'd look at replacing the 7300GT, either ATI 4870 or.... ? before the 7300 bites the dust, and because Apple/ATI driver support for OpenGL and upcoming technology (the 7300GT w/ 256MB is also down bottom rung of ladder).

  • What does JSESSIONID stand for when accessing Comcast/Xfinity emails? I was told that it means that a person who lives in my apartment bldg is hacking my mails. What say you?

    Greetings,
I have had a hacker problem for quite a while. I thought I had rid myself of him.  (He is a neighbor in my apt. building).  In any case today while attempting to set up a new e mail addy, my existing addy just 'disappeared' from the comcast site !!  I did not know what to make of it.  I called a friend who is rather tech savvy and understands that I am a bit paranoid after the many many months of serious hacking and the awful history of same that I have experienced. He told me to look at my cookies.  I read the list and when I got to the ones that said "sc0112.wc.mail.com.comcast.net",  with a cookie named "JSESSIONID" that he thought that the hacker might have, at the very least, got into my e mails.  Does anybody have any info on this issue.  Other then hard wiring my iMac to a router via a cable modem are there any other steps that I can take to have as safe of an experience as I can have.
I am most grateful to those of you who take the time to read and respond and I thank you in advance.
    Thank you.
    macuser222

JSESSIONID cookies are placed in your browser by websites (in this case, the comcast webserver) that want to keep track of your login session. Webservers that you log in to, such as your comcast email site, will set cookies such as this one so they can remember that you are logged in. This JSESSIONID cookie that you have is harmless, and actually necessary for the proper operation of the comcast email site.
But, if someone else (eg. a hacker) were able to get a copy of your JSESSIONID cookie, they could impersonate you; they don't need to know your username or password if they have a current copy of your session cookie.
It's hard to say what's happening to you, but if you suspect something fishy is going on, I'd start with:
      - Make sure your wireless router is configured to use WPA or WPA2 security. (WEP is not good enough).
      - Change the password on your wireless router! Make it long (12+ chars), with upper and lowercase letters, and numbers, and throw in some other characters like ! # % $, etc
      - Change your comcast password, make it a good one too.
      - You do own the router, right? You are not connecting to a router owned by someone else?
      - When you login to websites, make sure that the login page uses HTTPS. Really, these days, a security-concious website will keep the session over HTTPS at least until the user logs out.

  • Updating playhead in Pro Tools (slave) from Logic (master) using MTC.

    Hey there,
I have setup MIDI over LAN using the Audio MIDI Setup between two Macs and it works so far as when I hit play in Logic the Film in my Pro Tools picture machine seems to be in sync with the music coming from Logic. Questions:
    1) When nudging the playhead in Logic left and right the corresponding timecode changes are not updated on the Pro Tools machine until you hit play again in Logic. Is there any way Pro Tools can update it's play head, timecode values and picture as I nudge the Logic playhead without pressing play again? It would be great to nudge the Logic session by one frame and see the update in Pro Tools accordingly.
    2) When I hit play to stop the music in Logic the time code readings are not the same in each DAW how can this be remedied so that they are? Is something going wrong here? e.g. stopped @ 01:00:03:04 in Logic and Pro Tools reads 01:00:03:09.
Using Pro Tools 9.05, Logic Studio 9.1.8 (64-bit).
    Thank you!
    Ben

Ok after more testing I have managed to get this working using a direct midi connection between the 003 and the laptop (using a Edirol UM1 and the 003). Here is what I did.
ProTools8LE as master running on MacPro:
    1. Setup->Session
1a. Set the session start time to 00:00:00:00
    1b. Time code rate =25
    2. Setup->Peripherals
2a. Synchronization - MTC reader Port: Digi 003, Port 1
MTC Generator Port: Digi 003, Port 1
    3. Set session tempo (eg: 120bpm)
    4. Transport- hit the arrow on the right hand side of the transport window and select "Synchronization" then hit the GEN MTC button
    LOGIC slave running on Laptop.
    1. Connect MIDI i/o interface to ports on 003
    2. Set session tempo to match that in PT (120bpm)
    3. Settings->Synchronization
    Sync mode = MTC
Auto Enable External Sync = yes
Frame Rate = 25 (same as protools)
Auto detect format of MTC = yes
Bar position 1111 plays at SMPTE 00:00:00:00 (this matches the setting in PT)
Thats it. This setup appears to be working on my rig. I still haven't got this to work over Network midi, and I still haven't got PT8LE and Logic 8 to work together on the same machine. Let me know how you go.

  • Logic Pro 9.1.3 with Pro Tools HD 8.1.1

    Hey guys,
I've been reading all day and hoping I could make this happen but I'm losing hope.
I have an Pro Tools HD 2 system with 8.1.1 and Logic Pro 9.1.3 installed on my computer.
I currently have Logic slaved to pro tools but I can only get sound to come out of the built in output of the speakers which I then record it to pro tools on seperate passes. I'm trying to get my logic instruments to go out seperate audio channels and into seperate audio tracks on Pro Tools.
For example, I want a sound from my exs sampler to be monitored through my pro tools channel 1-2 and a sound from ES1 or some synth to be monitored through channels 3-4.
It would just make things sooooo much easier if this could happen! I also have reason 5 rewired to logic which I wanted to go through logic into pro tools on seperate channels as well.
As of now, I'm using all 3 programs but I have to use just one stereo channel in pro tools to monitor both logic and reason!
Is it possible to assign logic to go out different output channels into different pro tools tracks??????
Thanks much - Oh yeah I'm also on Snow Leopard if that matters.
    Josh

Avid dropped support for Logic TDM in Pro Tools HD 8.0.3. You need Pro Tools HD 8.0.1 if you want to use Logic with TDM hardware. Pro Tools HD 8.0.1 is qualified up to OS 10.5.8. Anything else is untested.
Logic followed suit by dropping the DAE menu in version 9.1 or later (gleamed from reading these forums), but annoyingly did not mention anything in their release notes. 9.0.2 is the last official mention of TDM support.
You can always use eight channels of Avid hardware with CoreAudio. By using aggregate IO you can do what you need to with eight channels. If you want to use DAE TDM, the only guarantee is PT HD 8.0.1, Logic 9.0.2, OS 10.5.8.
