A different quiestion about SATA (length, degree, etc.)

My SATA cable going into the 'B' (secondary) hard drive is damaged. The pins inside the female connector are mangled and rendered useless. I've contacted Apple to get a replacement cable but they said they can't get one as they don't have a part number for it. I was told by them that any SATA cable would fit and to go to an Apple store once I had the cable to have the repairs done, as this would not void my standard warranty. However, upon talking with an Apple Store technician, the technician explained to me anything that wasn't bought from the location where the repairs take place automatically voids the standard warranty.
I'm getting rather fed up with the bounce around and I'm at the point where I'm about to replace the cable myself and bite the bullet on the warranty. What I'd like to know is how long is the secondary SATA cable (ex: 12, 18, etc inches)? Would the proper cable be a 90 degree cable? Does the entire hard drive bay have to be taken out to reroute the cable; if so, how does the bay come out? What standard of SATA cable should I be looking for ex: 'SATA1' OR 'SATA2'?
Thanks!

Hello
You should looking for a S-ATA with one or two right angle connectors (not S-ATA II). The part number of the original cable for a G5 "late 2004" is 590-5366A.
Dont think they changed it, so it should be the same for the new G5 Dual-Core.
My suggestion, visit your local Apple Store, ask them to order the cable for you. Im pretty sure they can order it, if they really want to.
They have normally special Service Guides for each Mac Model, assume the Part Number for the S-ATA Cable is in the "Service Guide" (not "User Guide") for the new Dual-Core too.
You might have to pay for the cable and the replacement of the cable.
Imagine following situation, the Harddisk doesnt work in a new Mac, because the S-ATA Cable is broken. The Service cannot order a new cable, so they replace the complete Mac, instead of the Cable for a low Price.
Sounds not possible for me
In case they dont help you, asking for the Store Manager could be helpful.
If nothing helps, order a normal S-ATA Cable.

I have a late 2005 power PC G5 that I want to bring back to life.  I need to replace the original hard drive, a Maxtor 250 GB Sata.  Can I replace it with modern drives, SATA 5-6 etc?

I knew I should never get rid of my old G5's.  By the way, there is a browser still supported for the PPC, TenFourFox, if you're not using it already.  Go to the Floodgap website (they author it)  download it for free.  The only thing it doesn't support is the Flash plugin, but the browser works great. Other video types are supported.  It's based on Firefox, and runs most of the plugins and add-ons. It's very fast, and beats all other browsers on the browser compatibility and speed test.  That's now my default on my G5's.  Firefox and Safari are no longer supported.  As far as the OS, both Tiger and Leopard were solid for me.  The reason, as I stated before, was iMovie.  The version in Tiger with iLife was far superior to what Apple changed it to.  They 'dumbed it down' for the masses.  Even the newest iLife 11 on my Mac Pro quad isn't is good, in my opinion.  So Leopard should be fine for you.  It's a much larger browser in terms of sheer megabytes and disk space, but it's fine.  As far as getting an OS disc, I'm seeing Tiger for about $45.00, Leopard for $50 - 60.00 on that famous auction site.  As far as RAM, I have 8GB in my G5 2.3, but you should check Activity Monitor when you are running your apps.  See how much green slice you have left (unused RAM).  You might find you don't need eight.  A Mac Pro will grab more free RAM than a PPC machine will.  I have a hard time maxing out use of my 8 on the PPC.  Not true with the eight on my Mac Pro.  The OS doesn't hesitate to grab and use it.  You might be OK with 6GB on your PPC. More will not make you faster, as long as you still have free RAM available.  As far as backup on your resurrected machine:  look for a firewire enabled backup if can.  Use CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner) and make a clone backup.  Next time your PPC machine wipes out the hard drive, just take your Firewire drive and plug it into another PPC machine, and you can select it as your boot drive. You'll be back and running in five minutes.  You can also take the physical drive out of your enclosure, and put it in your tower to replace the failed drive, and you'll be back to where you were in less than ten minutes, OS and all.  The PowerMac has an 800 port, so you can do the 800 on the machine to an 800 port on your backup. A firewire 800 to 800 cable is only about $8.00.  It runs nice and fast through the 800 port.  I like the OWC Mercury Extreme enclosures.  They use USB, Firewire 800, and eSATA, so all your options are open.

  • HT4859 How do I keep one Apple ID account for the family, yet have different iCloud accounts for calendar, email, etc.??

How do I keep one Apple ID account for the family, yet have different iCloud accounts for calendar, email, etc.??

First decide which iPhone will be keeping the current iCloud account.  On the others, go to Settings>iCloud, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account.  (This will only delete the account from this phone, not from iCloud.  The phone that will be keeping the account will not be effected by this.)  When prompted about what to do with the iCloud data, be sure to select Keep On iPhone.  Next, set up a new iCloud account using a different Apple ID (if you don't have one, tap Get a Free Apple ID at the bottom).  Then turn iCloud data syncing for contacts, etc. back to On, and when prompted about merging with iCloud, choose Merge.  This will upload the data to the new account.
Once all your devices have their on iCloud accounts, to un-merge the data you will have to go to icloud.com on your computer, sign into each iCloud account separately and manually delete the data you don't want (such as deleting your son's contacts from your account, and vice versa).
You should also use separate Apple IDs for services such as iMessage and FaceTime.  Otherwise, you're likely to end up getting each other's text messages and FaceTime calls.  If you need to change these, for iMessage go to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive, tap the ID, sign out, then sign back in with a separate ID (such as the one just created for iCloud).  For FaceTime, do the same thing in Settings>FaceTime.

correct credential but unable to access that. If i re-share the folder then we are access it but when we are restarted the system then same problem is occurring.
I have checked IP,DNS,Gateway and more each & everything is well.
    Pls suggest us.

    Hi,
According to your description, my understanding is that the same shared folder can be accessed by name, but can’t be accessed be IP address and asks for credentials.
Please try to enable the option below on the device which has shared folder:
Besides, check the Advanced Shring settings of shared folder and confrim that if there is any limitation settings.
    Best Regards,
    Eve Wang

my macbook 3.1 screen goes dark after a period of use; but if i readjust the screen (close it to about a 30 degree angle) the screen light is on again.  i don't have an external monitor, so i just deal with it.  i'm about done dealing with it and am wondering if anyone else had/has this problem, and how did you solve it?

You have a hardware problem. It needs to be fixed.
Contact Apple using www.apple.com/support/contact if you are in a country that supports it or call the appropriate phone number on this page. Alternatively carry the MacBook in to an Apple retail store or service provider to ask for an estimate.

I don't think that is possible. You can manually arrange them, but there is no ability to automatically do it.

  • P67A-GD65 questions about RAID, Overclocking, Sleep, etc

Just got this motherboard a couple of months ago.  Running Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate.  BIOS 1.G0 and yes I am aware that there is a newer version.  It's my first MSI board and I have a few questions.
    1) I am interested in setting up RAID 0.  I have 2x brand new Western Digital 7200 RPM drives that I would like to put into RAID 0 for my OS (and backup to another drive of course).  Which ports should I use?  The integrated Intel RAID controller or the third party (JMicron or Marvell?), which I have currently disabled in the BIOS to increase boot time.  The drives are SATA 3.0 if that matters, not 6.0.
    2) I have a Core i7 2600 non-K installed.  Would I still be able to use the included MSI tools to overclock, even if the multiplier is fixed?  Should I use OC Genie or Afterburner?
    3) What are the BIOS settings that I need to tweak to be able to come out of sleep by moving the mouse or pressing a key on the keyboard?  I tried enabling the "Resume by USB/PCI/e" options but it always makes it so that the computer comes back out of sleep immediately after Windows starts the go-to-sleep process.
    4) I am using this is a server.  Is there any BIOS/hardware level power management that I could implement since it's a machine that will likely be powered on 24/7 except for when I decide to put it to sleep?
Edit: and before anyone decides to post some link about the difference between hardware and software raid, I ALREADY KNOW.  I am just wondering based on which controller I'll get better performance out of, Intel ICH10R vs Marcel SE9128.  All of the forum posts I've seen online are only with regards to SSD drives and not mechanical, which will yield different benchmarks.

    1) RAID preference is individual. Since you disabled 3rd party for loading time, will you want to sacrifice loading time now? Do you need to connect more drives to the system as a standalone data drive or just those needed for RAID?
    2) Overclocking Q&A, please refer to Overclockers section.
3 & 4) I would use S1 and tweak settings in OS Power Management for hibernation settings. Since it is a server on 24/7, usually, just the monitor will be off and screensaver on. The rest are not needed to be powered off or put to energy saving.

  • Questions about e-mail sync etc...

    Hi,
I will be setting up a new Palm Pre Plus Verizon phone soon but had a couple of questions to make sure I now what's possible.
    1) Is it possible to sync only the Calendar / Contacts from Microsoft Exchange but not the e-mail (work account)?  Can the same be done for other accounts (google, yahoo, etc...)?
    2) If not, can the Calendar/Contacts be set to automatically download but the e-mail be set for manual control (downloaded by user action only) thus choosing never to download?
    3) If so, can those preferences be set differently per individual account (Exchange vs Google vs Yahoo etc...)?
Also...I've seen several Palm reps on the posts suggesting users check out homebrew / 3rd party opportunities to customize their phones even though Palm doesn't "support them.  Can I get an overall take on whether this is a good idea or not?  Do you run the risk of ruining / breaking your phone using those types of 3rd party solutions (I would assume not if your reps are suggesting to look there...)?
Thanks very much for any input.
    FVP

    Hi,
Thank you so much, you've been a big help.
Would it be possible to bother you (or anyone in the know) with more complicated questions I've been facing trying to set up the palm?
I understand about how to Exchange (and control e-mail).
I still have questions though, on e-mail / contact setup.
My questions revolve around multiple accounts from the same place, and also AIM buddy control (and multiple AIM accounts).
Basically...is it a problem to pull in multiple Gmail accounts for example (more than 1)?  I use 2 different Gmail accounts (one for my friends / family, and one for work)?  That along with the Exchange acount?
As for AIM...I also have two AIM accounts I use (one for friends / family, one when working).  when I created both accounts, they sort of merged, and both stayed on (I wasn't able to control signing one off, keeping one on at a time)?  Am I just not finding the right settings?
Also...the contacts list was a disaster after bringing in the AIM accounts.  Even after deleting the accounts (because I couldn't get them to work right), the screennames stayed in my contacts list, and when I try to delete them (swipe away, choose delete) they say AIM profiles can't be deleted...even though the account is deleted.  Am I missing something??
I read in the manual, you are supposed to be able to stop contacts from feeding from certain accounts by choosing the menue / prerences / selecting the account / stopping the sync....but that wasn't even an option as the only "account" listed in preferences is the Palm account.
I'm just terribly confused on how to set things up and what can be controlled.  Thanks for any help you can provide (or a place I can go for this assistance).
    Thanks!

  • Extracting informations about rectangles, lines, fields etc from PDF

I'm looking for a way, to extract rectangles, lines, fields etc from a PDF, for example think of a blue rectangle which is drawn in a Word document, which is later exported to pdf. I need informations about the position of the rectangle, the color, the size, if it is filled or not, etc. Is there something like an API or an SDK which can help me? I searched for quite a time (so please, no RTFM-answers), but the only references I found where about producing PDF or extracting text, images or graphics (oh, just at the moment, I had the idea, that lines and rectangles could be coded as vector-graphics in PDF, could that be possible?).
I'm thankful for all answers and ideas (even if you just post links with informations),
    kind regards,
    Pivo

Yes, lines and rects are coded as vector graphics (or specifically path drawing instructions) in a PDF.
Adobe offers an SDK around Adobe Acrobat which would enable you to get this information. If you need a standalone solution, we also offer our full PDFLibrary.
