A different "Spaces" problem than most...

I've read through some of the different posts here about problems with Spaces, but I haven't seen any that were quite the same as the problem I've been having.
First of all, the F8 thing doesn't work.
However, by accident I discovered that if I hold down the Fn key on my MacBook Pro and then press F8, it opens Spaces, but it doesn't have either of the 2 test things that I placed into either Space 1 or Space 2.
BTW, I did set it up according to instructions and it is enabled.
Is this a known problem that may be solved in some future release or did I just get a corrupt disc?
I ask because in the few hours that I've had Leopard, I've found at least one other problem (the video backgrounds in iChat and Photobooth, etc. - they look NOTHING like the video tour by Apple)

a. Some programs don't seem to work well with opening in the right space (older versions of MS Office come to mind), and this should get better with program updates. As a work around, you can change to the proper space and then open the program while there. The applications from Apple seem to work properly for me. Mail, Address Book, and iCal all open on Space 1 automatically, every time I boot up. FireFox and Safari both open on Space 2 when they are launched. Word and Excel launch on Space 5, while WindowsXP inside Parallels always runs on Space 9 in full screen. For me, this is very organized.
b. I used a couple of different programs to do this same type of multiple desktops approach to working with programs. The last program I used, under Tiger, was Virtue Desktops. It was a little more polished than this original version of Spaces, but we should see improvements by .2 or .3 (Maybe):)
I generally work with 10 to 15 programs running at once, and dual monitors, but even the dual monitors don't allow me to arrange program windows the way I want, or to work with full screen programs like Parallels(WinXP) in a less distracting way. I prefer to have up to 9 desktops (accessible using Cntl + 1 or the number of the Space to quickly change my entire desktop.
Some people are distracted or even confused with the whole Spaces concept while others have been using it with many Linux distros for years. If your brain doesn't wrap around it and enjoy the feature it can easily be turned off in the Spaces preferences, just make sure you delete the program assignments from the preferences first, before you disable the feature. I've read that there have been problems by some people where applications will continue to open in a Space, and the Space isn't available, so nevernever land for it...

A different GPU problem than any I've researched

About 6 weeks ago temperature gauge started giving me warnings that the GPU diode 0 was getting too hot. Usually it gets up to around 260 F. I haven't had any performance issues, but I have to assume this is no bueno. After doing extensive research regarding this issue, I found that most people have had issues caused by their discrete GPU, specifically the AMD Radeon 6750M. This was concerning because that's what my computer has. However I installed Gfxcardstatus and found that the GPU only shows as being excessively hot when using the Intel HD Graphics 3000 GPU. The computer never feels hot, and the fans don't seem to help to control the issue, even after using macs fan control to customize the fan settings. I never do any heavy lifting with my computer, and the heat issue persists no matter what applications I have open or what I'm doing. Is this something to be concerned about? Can this kind of heat coming from the GPU damage other components? Is there any kind of fix I could do to help the issue? I know there's a million threads similar to this, but I felt my issue was different enough to warrant a new thread. It's a 15" Early 2011 MacBook Pro running 10.9.4. Just to reiterate, I have had no display or performance issues associated with this issue, just the excessive heat. Thanks in advance for any advice!

Hi - for any photo, info in mountain lion shows a different file size than Photoshop does. I've tested with CS3 and CS6 and get the same problem. Doesn't happen with CS3 and OSX10.4 or any previous versions of Photoshop and OSX. Anyone know why?

this one is actually a really rare symptom of a flaky connection to the ipod on a Windows PC. there's more going on in terms of hardware on nanos and 5th gens than in the earlier models ... so if the connection is flaky to precisely the right/wrong degree, itunes will see the ipod, but misidentify it as an earlier version of ipod.
tracking down the cause of the flakiness can be tricky ... as you already know ...
just checking. have you tried connecting with a different (known-good) USB cable? does that seem to have any impact on the rate of occurence of the problem?

Bug. Dock now wants 2 clicks to change programs on different Spaces.

This just started happening yesterday. Opening a program using the dock wasn't affected. I use Spaces, this only occurs when I want to switch to a program that is assigned to a different space than the active program.
Previously, 1 click would select whatever program I had running, and everything would move to the appropriate Space and that would become the active program. As of yesterday I must first click on the program's dock icon, wait a second, and click again, then it would move to the space on which the program was opened.
Say I have Safari, Pages, and Mail all open on space 1, but Firefox open on page 2. If I'm in Safari, and want to go to Mail, no problem. I just click on the Mail dock icon and it comes to the front. If, however, I want to switch to Firefox, I have to hit the dock icon twice, fairly slowly. On the first click "Firefox" will appear in the menu bar, but it will not 'move' to Firefox until I click a second time. Returning to Safari, or any program not running on the same space as Firefox requires the same action.
If I open a new program, I click once, the program starts up, and it moves to the appropriate space - same as normal. It is just in switching programs that this happens.
Has anyone else experienced this bug? Any ideas on how to get it to behave normally?

I am experiencing similar symptoms trying to get AD authentication to work in apex 3.2.1. After reading your thread, I changed to use a custom page already in the app (I'm testing with the demo app) and it seemed to accept my credentials. However... The application itself is not showing any data now. When I have the auth scheme set back to the original (I think it is using DB accounts), I see data again. So even though it seems that I had a successful auth, something else is wrong. Did you ever solve your issue with an acceptable solution or work-around?

A workaround to get open documents in different Spaces to the allocated PS space

A small workaround for Spaces CS5 Mac.
If you have CS5 documents spread over different Spaces due to clicking them in the finder and want to get them all back in to the allocated PS Space, here's a workaround.
You do need one doc open in the correct space I'm afraid for it to work. Create a new doc in there if you have to. I tend to leave one small doc open in the right Space all the time now.
Go to the allocated PS space. Select the menu option "Consolidate all to tabs" from the Window>Arrange menu.
This will bring all the open docs from their spaces to the correct space as tabs.
That might be enough for you but you can't drag adjustments layers and layers with alphas etc to another doc in Tab view, something I do all the time when I'm retouching 20-30 shots and I'm trying to match them.
Hard to do that with tab view obviously.
Next select "Float all in windows" and you'll have your docs viewable, side by side in the right space.
If you assign a key command to those options, it becomes a quick tap 1-2 and you're done.
As far as I can tell, if you want floating windows, and all your docs in the right place, and don't want to open your images from the PS open dialogue (who does when you have 6 windows of 50 images on your dual 30" monitor setup?) then this will do it.
It's not great for all things but it's better than "It's all Apple's fault"

there is certainly no built in way to do it. In fact Dock Spaces is the only program I've ever heard of that allows you to have different docks in different spaces. if it can't do it, it's impossible.

This post was about having updated the primary email address on an iTunes account via a computer - if you do that you might need to log out of the account on an iPad by tapping on the id in Settings > iTunes & App Store and then log back in with the updated version of the account for that email address change to be recognised on your iPad. If you don't log out and back in then an iPad (or iPhone or iPod Touch) might continue to show the old version of the iTunes account id.

I saw another thread on the matter but thought I would post because the circumstances are different. Here is how it happened.
I have had an Apple Store account for years and until recently our family has only had our one Mac and my iPhone 4. Thus any purchases we have made on the Apple App Store were made only with this account.
We recently purchased two iPhone 5S's--one for my wife and one for my daughter. Neither had Apple IDs so first we set up my wife's iPhone and created an Apple ID for her. Next we used the Family Sharing feature to set up an account for our "under age 13" daughter.
Because I am still waiting for my iPhone 6 Plus to arrive, and because the iPhone 4 cannot upgrade to iOS 8, and because my Apple ID is the only account with any apps that have been purchased in prior years, I set up my wife as the Family Organizer but when I set up her account, I chose the option to "share purchases from a different account" and entered the information for my Apple ID.
My daughter is able to view my prior purchases on her iPhone, but when my wife tries to view my prior purchases, she receives the message "This iTunes account is set up to use Family Sharing with a different iCloud account than <her Apple ID>."
I hope Apple is reading this. I would be more than willing to help them on this one as this feature is one of the main reasons I put our family on iPhones.

I had this problem. I finally figured it out yesterday. Try this:
On the device that is having trouble seeing purchases, go to Settings>iCloud>Family Sharing> Then tap on the user of the device you are on. Under "Family Purchases" make sure it has the AppleID of the person for that device. Mine originally had my husbands AppleID in there (he is the Organizer), but I changed it to mine. That doesn't make it so that the purchases are under me. The purchases remained under my husband, but my ID had to be in this spot for it to work.
After that, I closed settings, then I went to Settings>iTunes and App Store> click on the AppleID and Sign Out, even if it has the right AppleID in there. Then Sign In again using the AppleID of the person on that device. Again-- even if it has the right ID in there to start, still sign out and back in.
See if they show up. If they don't show up still, try doing a restart (hold down power button and home button until it restarts).
They should show up by then, but if they don't, at that point, try to go into iCloud and Sign Out and back in.
I think the key is having the right ID in "Family Purchases". I hope this works for you.

How do I open multiple Safari pages in different Spaces?

My wife's MacBook Pro will open Safari in different Spaces by opening Safari, switching to a new space, then holding down a single click on the Safari sign located in the Dock. It pulls up several options including Open New Window. When I click on that, it will open another session of Safari, while retaining the session running on the other Space.
My new MacBook Pro will not do this. I have looked and cannot find any topic addressing this issue. Please help me with this, it is a more practical option for my work than just opening multiple tabs in the same space.

It slightly darkens the entire screen, shrinking my page some, and gives me three side by side options including, Quit, Hide, Options. The Options tab expands into three more options of Keep in Dock, Open at Login, Show in Finder. The first two of these tabs are checked.

HD space problem - startup disk shouldn't be full...

Hello everyone.
I'm having a really weird problem with my hard drive. All of a sudden, a message popped up saying that my Startup Disk was almost full, and the system profiler read it as having "zero k". This is extremely odd because I had about 19 Gb free just a moment before, and after checking folders, apps and documents there really shouldn't be a space problem. The first message came up right after importing a CD, but that shouldn't have caused this.
I tried deleting some items, but space increased only by that tiny amount. After a restart, the indicated hard drive space randomly jumped up to 1 Gb. When I woke it back up right now it was down to 200 Mb, and after another restart it's just come up to 650Mb. It just seems to fluctuate...
If anyone knows what the issue might be or what I could do about it, please help! Thanks,

Hi. Thanks for the tip, it was really helpful. Everything was as expected except for some log files in my Library. The sizes are mostly up to 100 K except for one huge 15.9 Gb file, called console.log.2 in a strange folder called 501
It's located in
Library > Logs > Console > 501 >
I'm really not sure what these files are and what they do, or what these folders are. Can I trash them or is that a problem?
Also, I've noticed that my hard drive space is actually continuously decreasing little by little... Do you think this is related?

I've shut down my computer and opened iTunes from the hard drive Program Files and tried to import the CD again with the same problem. How can I retrieve the "CD Looup Results" diaglogue box to choose the correct CD title to fit the song list on my original CD?

You might also be able to do it without importing the songs again I think. Just highlight the tracks, right click them and choose "Get Track Names". This feature only works on CDs that were imported via iTunes.

Ordered an iPhone 6 Plus off contract with a credit card that has a different billing address than the account. Does it matter and is the order going to be cancelled if it doesn't process the card correctly?

Just don't want to find out Wednesday that my order was cancelled or delayed because the credit card has a different billing address than the account. If they check the validity of the card at the time you pre-order I don't see it being a problem.

Oh, should mention I ordered right at 3AM (EST) on the 12th and got a Confirmation email with a Deliver by: 9/19/14 but when you try the "Check Status page" it spits out "Expected Ship Date: Not available at this time."

How to Setup a JSP to Run on Different Physical Location than OC4J Defaul

I am trying to setup a development environment for jsp application development in Oracle 9ias Release 2 for a development group. I followed the steps outlined in NOTe:167960.1 using both EM Website (creating a OC4J and editing server.xml and defau*.xml files) and DCMCTL (Doc ID: 185635.1) utility. OC4J app is coming up only partially which does not work.
Is this possible to "Setup a JSP to Run on Different Physical Location than OC4J Default Home" in Oracle 9ias Release 2 ?

I was finally able to get it up and running... I commented out all the apple specific lines in smb.conf until I was able to successfully finish the driver copy process via the Windows driver wizard. The line in the /etc/smb.conf which was causing this weird problem was:
vfs objects = notify_kqueue,darwinacl,darwin_streams
I have no idea what this line is about. However after commenting it out the driver installation immediately started to work. I cross checked it by adding the line again and viola the problem was back - so it can be broken down to this line...
As I've found some other comments to this line in the internet I guess I will go for the smb.conf changes described in this article:

An app which I have never purchased shows as an update on the App store. When I try to deal qith it shows as being purchased by someone with a different apple id than me. No one else uses my Macbook Pro. Any ideas???

His last suuggestion was to go home, back up all the data an take the computer back to the Apple store to reinstall the operating system. Any simpler ideas to solve this problem.???

Assigning Different Spaces to Multiple Displays

Hi,
I have my Mac connected to my TV (not mirroring) and I'm using Spaces.
I was wondering if it was possible to assign to each display, a different Space?
In other words, can I have my Mac screen displaying Space 1, and my TV displaying Space 3?
My problem is simple: I'm working on my Mac display, and I'm also watching a video on my TV. But I can't display the video in full-screen because then it takes up both screens.

Just to be clear, you CAN run an application and split its windows across different Spaces by dragging those windows in the Spaces view. So open Firefox in Space 1, open a second FF window in Space 1, then F8 and drag the second window into Space 2 and voila. It's somewhat random what happens when you click on the application icon in the dock when you do this, but it does work.
Good point about the background being very resource-intensive. Never mind.

Why am I getting this error message every time I open iTunes? I'm giving the option of Sync or don't Sync and click sync and there are no problems. But why does it open with: You are signed in with a different Apple ID than previously used with Podcasts. Do you want to sync these podcast subscriptions and stations with “*****”?

Please sign out of the iTunes Store by selecting
Store ▹ Sign Out
from the iTunes menu bar. Then sign back in.
