"A disk read error has occurred; press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart"

Hello,
I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop (A205-S5804) running Windows Vista Home Premium; I have had this laptop since 2008. All of a sudden, it decided to crash on me the other day. I also have been having issues with my CD-ROM drive as well; it won't seem to start up the CDs I put it in automatically. I have to give it a few tries for it actually work.
I took the Recovery, Applications/Drivers CD to see where that might get me to solve this problem. I finally have gotten to the point where it has asked me to start Windows in Safe Mode and in other options. Just when I think I have gotten to work, it's newest stopping point is getting it into safe mode, but then just the mouse pointer is showing and nothing else but a black screen. I've done this several times now.
So with all this being said, is there anything else I can do? I've tried hitting F8, I've tried holding down the 0 (zero) key to bring up the default Toshiba restore thing right when my computer starts, but that's not even working.
Guess my main question is, do you think that my data has already been lost? Or what? Kind of hard to say, I'm sure.
Hope to hear from somone soon
Thanks

It's unclear exactly what you did with the 'Recovery, Applications/Drivers CD'. So, your data may or may not be already gone.
The Toshiba Recovery Disk Creator program does not appear in your model's list of installed software. But, the recovery utility is mentioned in the recovery section, starting on page 57 of your User's Guide, with the proviso 'Available on certain models'. Your system came out on the cusp of when Toshiba began consistently installing the recovery partition on their HDDs.  So, you may or may not have it.
To try running the Toshiba Recovery from the HDD one more time. Power off your unit, press and hold down the '0' (zero) key, power on your unit, keep holding the '0' key down until you hopefully see the Toshiba Recovery Wizard menu, you could then return your unit to its factory default out-of-the-box setup.
However, if you can and do run this, your data will definitely be gone. Do you have data you wish to try to save?

  • HP g7 Laptop - "A Read Disk Error Has Occured - Use Ctrl Alt Delete to restart"

I recently ran into a problem with my HP g7 Laptop. Purchased from Fry's less than 8 months ago.
The issue i ran into is - when turning on the Laptop
1st the monitor did not appear to come on...but it had its just that the montior was not
    showing illuminence...
i ran into the DOS message:
"A read disk error has occured
Use ctrl alt delete to restart"
which i did but did not work. I took apart the laptop to examine the hard drive and based on visual review did not appear to be damaged. Though I was shocked to see the hard drive is a SEAGATE product! which i have found to be a NOT RELIABLE hard drive product. I feared the worst knowing i had lost what I had saved and backed up on the C/D drive portion of the Hard Drive. Using a Flashlight to see what appeared on the monitor, I was able to perform the HP Recovery options on the computer but each option ended with the computer replying to the effect the it could not detect or there was no hard drive or c: - anything...which confused me because why was the laptop allowing to performing the recovery options. The last option i tried was to restore laptop to original factory settings. When it completed and I click the button for the system to restart the next error message i received was that "BOOTMRG missing - use ctrl alt delete to restart"
    which again did not work.
Can you please bottom line it for me...have i experienced a HD crash and if so how can i know if this is covered under manufacture warrenty? It is upsetting to know that only after 8months of having this product, which i have been very happy with, until now, that the HD experiences a crash. none of the reviews for this product that i have read indicates this problem occuring!
if this is a HD crash, also i am going to have to purchase a new HD correct, if not covered under warrenty?
please help! spending over $600 for the Laptop and it only lasting a little over 8 months is not acceptable!
    Sincerely
    Frustrated Customer

    Hi admiral74,
Call in and speak to a customer service rep. That will be the only way to know if it is still covered by warranty.
    Good luck!

  • HP Elitebook 8560w Won't Boot UP -- Disk Read Error Press CTRL ALT DEL to restart

Hello. I have an Elitebook 8560w, that won't boot up. The screen says "Disk Read Error Press CTRL ALT DEL to restart".  The screen isn't all black...there are some random colored square pixels with a random flashing !, but it's mostly black.
I've run the diagnostics and the F4 Hard Disk Test has passed everytime I've run it. I can hear the hard drive running, so mechanically it's okay (not sure on the logic side).
The F3 Run-in Test fails under the Memory Test, it reads "Run-in test failed - Failed Memory Address 0x76B99000 Pattern expected - 0XFEFFFF Pattern Read - OxFFFFFF
I tried a new 4GB DDDR RAM (removed the old one), and it hasn't helped. I should add before I changed RAM, it failed memory test and said "Disk Not Found".
That made me think it was the hard drive, but the hard drive test has always passed.
Any help would be appreciated. I'm lost. I have a new drive and ram coming from HP, but hoping I can salvage info on HDD.
Also...the computer was set up with Windows 7 as new, but my company reimages everyone's computer and installs XP. So I'm not sure running the HP CD (assuming I can find it) would even help.

Disk read failure and disk not found are classic signs of a hard drive failure. The memory failed the test, so it looks like this had two issues at once.
The good news is that the right parts are on their way. If you want to save your data, do not use the recovery disks for the system. They will wipe the hard drive if it is still functional for them.
With regards to retrieving your data, have you talked to the IT team yet? Most IT departments have a process for data retrieval on company equipment.
If they do not have a process setup to do that, then you could try getting a notebook hard drive external enclosure. They usually run fairly cheap for a basic enclosure and that is enough to connect the hard drive externally to a different computer using a USB cable to copy data from it. This would work provided they do not encrypt the hard drive. If they do encrypt it, contact the IT team for their process as encryption limits the methods that are available.

  • "A Disk Read Error Has Occured" past 239 FSB?

The title says it all.  I'm runnin an Neo Platinum 2 and when booting up overclocked past 239 FSB I get "A Disk Read Error Has Occured" and it asks me to reboot.  Is this as simple as my SATA being overclocked too far?  I was under the impression this board had an SATA lock, but I could be wrong.  Any suggestions on getting past this?  Or have I reached my peak?

  • Error message NTLDR is missing - press ctrl alt del to restart

    Hello,
I am extremely embarrassed to admit the following and ridiculously angry with myself for doing something as totally stupid as I did, but it is done now..sigh..
I have the NTLDR is missing - press ctrl alt del to restart nightmare error.
This is how it happened. I need(ed) to reformat my hard drive, but first I was going to back up everything. I back up every so often, though, now I know not near as often as I should!. (last back up was 5/21/07 sigh.) Well, not thinking, instead of backing up, I put the restore cd in the drive and the screen came up saying: "loading ramdisk" then I got to the next screen which basically was asking if I wanted to restore out of the box or not. I chose the first step in the wizard which said out of the box. Then I clicked NEXT and realized I had not backed up my files!! So I cancelled out of the restore cd wizard.
When I restarted the computer, I got the aforementioned nightmare error.
I have been researching for many, many hours on how to fix it or at least be able to boot into windows. I've done the following:
    1. created a floppy boot disk with ntldr, ntdetect.com, and boot.ini on it to restore I have all but I don't know if the dates mean anything on the ones downloaded from another laptop
this did not work I still came up with the same error or some other errors one pointing to hal\something. i am not sure if it is my boot.ini that is causing the problem or what. Oh, by the way, I went into the BIOS and made sure that the computer booted up to FDD first when trying the floppy option.
    [boot loader]

    Hi
Its a very stupid and tricky situation.
The simplest solution would be the HDD formatting and new reinstallation of the OS.
But it seems you want to rescue all the files available on the HDD.
    Hopefully its not too late
Hmmm. I think youve got only one chance!!! You have to remove the internal HDD from the notebook and try to connect it to second PC via external USB controller!!!!
Such part is not expensive and can be ordered from every notebook dealer.
You should be able to get the access to the HDD removed from notebook....
After this procedure the HDD should be formatted in NTFS and all partition should be erased!
Then you should try to start the installation procedure from the Windows or Recovery CD.
By the way; I have investigate a little bit in the Microsoft database and found these both documents:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318728
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314057
Maybe some hints described in these documents could be useful.
    Good luck

  • Tried installing Windows Vista, cancelled install and now it won't boot from the OEM Vista DVD, all i get is BOOTMGR is missing error... Ctrl Alt Del to restart and when i turn the computer on i get a blank screen and pressing C is not working to boot....

    Topic says it all...
My friend started a installation of Windows Vista, but pulled out after deleting all partitions...
So now i power it on, get a blank screen (seems a bit gray because of backlighting, should show the apple logo right?)...
Then after like 15-20sec it will throw out a:
    BOOTMGR is missing
    Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart
I have a OEM Windows Vista DVD in the drive, and i know... Windows 7 is better... but i'm not that fond of stealing software from Microsoft and i have 10 licenses for Vista...
I have tried pressing C while booting up but it doesn't work...
Does anyone here have a magic soloution for me, and no i will not install MacOS on it !!!

Deleting Boot Camp partitions the conventional way will not work . You must use the Boot Camp Assistant to remove a Boot Camp partition. Here is a link to the guide.
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/Boot_Camp_Install-Setup_10.6.pdf
The way to restart is to hold down the option/alt key during startup* and then selecting the Mac OS. If you have a valid Boot Camp install of Windows it would show up during this type of start up.
    * hold down immediately after pressing the power button and until the OS choice screen appears.
    To summarize.
1 Use the above method to boot into Mac OS.
2 Download the instructions and read them.
3 Use Boot Camp Assistant to remove the partition.
4 Pick your friends more carefully.

  • A Disk read error has occurred

My laptop froze the other day and now when I try to boot I keep getting the message  A disk read error occurred. Any ideas of what I can do to get my computer to boot?

Which computer? There is a label on the bottom.

  • A disk read error occured (Press ctr-alt-dell to restart)

    HI
I was using my MacBook in a normal why when suddenly all the apps crashes. (In OSX Yosemite)
I wasn't able to do anything... So I had to turn off my MacBook manually! When I restarted, I got a black screen with white letters saying 'A disk read error occured'.
It really looks like a Windows screen (ugly), and yes I have a Windows 7 BootCamp.
What should I do? Can somebody help me?
I can't start OSX or Win...

Do you have any idea if I will lose all of my data when doing recovery?
Booting into the Recovery volume is just booting into a volume other than your normal boot volume. Also running Disk Utility will not affect your data at all.
Also download and run Etrecheck.  Copy and paste the results into your reply. It's a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC to help identify the more obvious culprits.

  • Disk read error keeps coming up after pressing ctrl alt del like it says

Was on the computer and froze, had to turn using on/off button.  When it came back up the disk read error appeared and when you press ctrl alt del it just keeps coming up.  If you can help please know that I am NOT computer savy.

    Hi,
This article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1207 provides tips that will resolve issues causing this message to appear with iPhones and iPods.
Make sure the iPhone is directly connected to a high-speed USB2 port on the PC, using the cable that came with it.

  • Satellite L630 - Bootmng miss press ctrl alt canc to restart

    Hi all,
I have a toshiba L630 with Win 7 premium family OS.
After a failed backup procedure when i start my cpu i read the following message:
+Bootmng miss press ctrl alt canc to restart.+
    I think my cpu died.
Please help me to resolve this problem.
I don't have the repair cd and no os install CD.

I presume you meant to type Bootmgr. There are a lot of tutorials on the web on how to repair this problem. I don't know any way to fix the problem without a W7 disk. If you cannot borrow a W7 disc or a W7 recovery disc (from any machine) then you either have to buy a disc from Toshiba or for 10 US$ you can buy a recovery disc from [http://systemdiscs.com/] . This appears to be a reputable site - linked to in posts on Microsoft's own forum.

  • Revolve 810 G1 Unlock Computer when in Tablet Mode. Press CTRL-ALT-DEL or Windows Security Button

    1.  I have an Revolve 810 G1
Running Windows 7 Pro (64 Bit).
When I change the screen to Tablet Mode
(Folding tablet over keyboard and using as tablet).
    I lock my computer.
    2.  What to know how to unlock without having to Open back up and use the CTL-Alt-DEL keys.
When Locked screen shows:  Press CTRL-ALT-DEL or use the Windows Security Button to unlock this computer.
I would like to use the Windows Button on the bottom of the screen
(One Used in Windows 8 to change between Desktop and Metro) to Unlock screen And bring up on screen keyboard to put in my password.
This is probably how it should work, but it does not work.
Even bringing up the onscreen keyboard via the blue power button On the screen to Ease Of Access does not work.
The CLT-ALT-DEL on the on screen keyboard will not unlock the screen.
    P.S.
Where is that Windows Security Button when you need it?
    Thanks,
    Rog

If you are using Windows 7 (not Windows 8), you should be able to touch the Ease of Access button at the lower left of the screen, then select Type without the keyboard (On-screen keyboard). When the on-screen keyboard pops-up, press CTRL, then ALT, then DEL. You should get a password prompt; the on-screen keyboard will stay visible unless and until you close it.

  • Firefox 9.0.1 keeps hanging once I access a website with video, when I write e-mails etc. If a press ctrl+alt+del, opens a window to confirm closing, and firefox works again. When I close that confirm window, firefox immediately hangs again.

It stops working if I access websites with videos, and all sort of more complex flash. It I try to write an e-mail, it also stops. I can't do anything. PC keeps working, though. So I press ctrl+alt+del. It opens that window asking if you want to close all the tabs. I notice that firefox start to work again, behind that window. But, once I close the window, it stops again. Sometimes I can close the tab with the video before it hangs again, which can take a few ctr+alt+del's. It doesn't happen with other browsers! It started 1 week ago. Is it an extension? Or a virus (i use avast)? Thank you!

  • BOOTMGR is missing press ctrl+alt+delete to restart.

    Hello there!
I'm having trouble since i formatted my t61's primary hard drive, after i did that i thought i could recover the operating system simply by using the recovery DVD's but for my surprise when i turned on the laptop to begin the recovery process this message appeared on a black screen BOOTMGR is missing press ctrl+alt+delete to restart... even tho i put the 1rst recovery disc in the DVD drive. After that i tried the 2nd one which is the operating system recovery DVD and still got the same message. What can i do?? I do have an old yet functional thinkpad HDD that came with the computer with vista, R&R and the lenovo preloaded softwares in it, i don't use it anymore because i replaced it with an HD with more GB which now is (was) my primary HD but I don't have the original windows vista DVD just have the 4 recovery DVD's, one thing I'm concerned of is that if i install windows vista again from an original vista DVD then i wont be able to have all the lenovo preloaded software (productivity center, rescue and recovery and all that). PLEASE help! Thank you in advanced.

    Welcome to the forums
If you have an original Vista DVD you can try to repair the bootmanager of your laptop.MIcrosoft has 4 resolutions for this try them

  • Windows Server 2012R2 - Cannot RDP, server hangs at logon from console after pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL

We have several machines that have exhibited this behavior so far. Once they get into this state, the only option is to reboot. They are HP ProLiant BL460c G7 blades.
    The behavior exhibited is:
You can no longer RDP to the machine.  It just eventually times out.
Console access via iLO shows what you'd expect, asking for CTRL+ALT+DEL, but when you press that, it just goes to the dark blue screen with "Windows Server 2012 R2" written at the bottom and doesn't go further.
There doesn't seem to be any unusual notes in the System Log that I can see.

I've also read the support article that you linked, but that seems to suggest that there is always a problem with RDP and in this case the server gets to a point where it is stuck and requires a reboot to clear.
    Hi Mitch,
For the above line of yours seems there is some misunderstanding, as nowhere in the link provided it suggest to restart\reboot the server. But instead need to check the certificate related scenario.
Can you ping the destination server when you can’t perform RDP?
Now for more troubleshooting you can choose performance monitor and can see what is effecting, for that you can go through beneath article.
