A DNG File Processed by an Earlier Version of ACR--How to Re-Process in ACR 8.4

I have thousands of DNG files processed by the ACR versions that came with CS4 and CS5. I was hoping to re-process some of them with the later ACR versions that came with CS6. But when I open a previously edited DNG file in ACR 8.4, it seems to revert to the earlier version in which the file was originally edited/processed. I made a duplicate of a file and reverted it to Default--sort of like restoring its virginity--but ACR 8.4 was not fooled; it still opened the earlier version. What to do???????

The earlier version of ACR was using a previous Process Version.
If you want the newer adjustment sliders, set your Process Version to 2012 on the Camera Calibration tab.

DNG files do not contain some metadata supplied by the camera, which can be used by the manufacturer's software. Thus, if you don't keep the original Raw photo, you will lose this information.
If your 1000% sure you're never going to use the manufacturer's software, then this isn't a problem. But who can be sure what software you will be using 10 years from now?

  • Cannot open CC, indd files saved in an earlier versions in CS6

When attempting to open CC files inside of version CS6 that have been saved by students in version CS4 and later, I get the following message" Cannot open "fileName.indd" because it was saved with a newer version of Adobe  InDesign (CS7.0) You must use tht version or later to open the file... How can I open these files? I also get plugin messages.

That's weird. But I guess they didn't properly Exported the file into an .idml file. Save As is different from File -> Export to idml
If your student did just File -> Save As, thinking that Save As works just like MS Word that saving it will work with backward compatibility to a lower version of InDesign then probably it won't work.
However, just ask them to Re-Export the file to .idml and see if you can open it in your InDesign CS6.

When I selected one image, the “Raw Fine Tuning” menu on the left side of my screen, in the Ajustments tab, was gone and there was one message telling me that the image was processed with an earlier version of aperture and it needed reprocessing. Even if I select “Reprocess” nothing has changed.
I spent one week seeking for a solution and that's what worked for me:
    1) I read in many forums that the solution was to delete the file "Raw Decode Presets.plist" in ~/Library/Application Support/Aperture. I checked but didn't found that I don’t that file. This file is where Aperture stores the raw decode presets that it uses every time you make an import. A didn’t have this file because I had never saved my presets.
    2) What I did to solve the problem was to go to another project that I had previously imported before upgrade to version 3.0.2, and selected an image.
    3) Aperture showed all right the “Raw Fine Tuning” menu in Ajustments tab. Then I clicked on the ajustment icon on the right corner of “Raw Fine Tuning" menu and selected the option “Save as Preset”. I gave the name of my camera to the file and saved it. I also selected the option “Save as Camera Default” in the same location.
    4) I closed and restarted Aperture.
    5) After that I went to the project where my dark green photos were. I selected one of the images and clicked on the “Reprocess” button that appeared in the place of “Raw Fine Tuning” Menu.
    6) Voila! The “Raw Fine Tuning” re-appeared and the image was recovered.

  • Problems reading xmp data into dng files

    Hi there,
I am working on a Mac and have exported files as lossy dng for colour correction externally. They have done the work for LR 5 process (I am using CC) and returned xml files. I cannot seem to read this data into the dng files for further editing in Lightroom. I have tried re-importing them and I have tried reading metadata from file. Any help would be appreciated as I usually simply read the xmp to the original RAW but the RAW files are currently on an external drive in another country!!!
    Thanks,
    Andy

    Hi Andy,
I dunno how best to get extracted xmp files into the raw folders, but if you are comfortable with exiftool, you can use it to extract xmp sidecars from DNG files.
If you want a turn-key solution which does not required you to futz with exiftool, then consider a free plugin I wrote:
    robcole.com - xEmP
It will allow you to create xmp sidecars with all your DNG adjustments and metadata (which can then be applied to the non-dng raw files).
However, if you won't need the DNGs in your catalog afterward, then the easiest way is to convert them back to proprietary raw format using this plugin (also free, and I wrote it):
    robcole.com - UnDNG
Conceptually, you can think of it as converting the DNGs to proprietary raw format, but note: it doesn't convert anything, it just allows existing raw files that are NOT in the catalog, to replace the DNGs that are in the catalog. All adjustments and metadata and everything else will be preserved (just like when you convert a proprietary raw to DNG format).

  • How do I import images created in earlier versions of Aperture and saved to DVD as an Aperture library into Aperture 3.2.1?

When I insert the DVD into my MacPro the disk appears as though it is blank, with the little 'burn' icon in the top right
When I insert the DVD into my macbook it shows the full Aperture library structure and when I allow file sharing between the machines the MacPro can also recognises the files
I suspect I am making a basic error somewhere as the images are clearly all there.  This doesnt just occur for one DVD, I have dozens that are all perfroming in the same way when I try to import files created in an earlier version of Aperture back into the version I am now using, 3.2.1
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
    Reiss.

To get the old library into Aperture it will need to be upgrade. To do this you will need to copy the library off the DVD onto our HD and then open Aperture on this library. Aperture should then upgrade the library to the latest version.

  • AE not reading all the XMP data from DNG files

I'm working on a very large time-lapse for a construction company - I have a sunset that is broken between two folders and rendering the folders seperately makes Quicktime unhappy during playback and I get an ugly jump in sunset exposure.
So I combined the two folders in Lightroom (LR) from my RAW files (NEF) and exported the entire sequence as DNG files with simpler numbering. The sequence is about 1560 files and constitutes about 22 GB of data. I created a new LR library from the DNG sequence to make sure it all looked good and it does.
I imported the same DNG sequence into AE, checked a few frames in the preview and sent it out to render. Two thirds of the way through the QT movie, exported in H.264 at 30 fps, I start seeing problems. Huge sections look like the XMP data has not been read, then there's a good section and then bad again. I matched the movie time to preview in AE and indeed saw the same problems in the AE preview. So the problem begain in AE's reading the files from the folder, not in rendering.
I went back to LR for file comparison. There was no problem in LR. All the DNGs look great.
I'm on a MacBookPro Retina with 2.8 GHz Intel processor, 16GB 1600 MHz DDR3 Ram and NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB graphics
I have the standard 69GB cache on an external drive and have 11GB RAM available for AE.
    Installed CPUs =8
CPUs reserved for other apps = 2
RAM allocation per background CPU = 1GB
Actual CPUs that will be used = 6
I have the latest AE from the Adobe Cloud, although I haven't done the most recent update yet.
My thought was to break the folder up into smaller segments for rendering, but that's not the problem. I see the XMP hasn't been consistantly read in preview. To me it doesn't make sense that the folder is too large for preview because it's not even rendering it there, just reading the files...?
    Any insight, solutions?
    Thanks,
    Dennis

  • Have AirPort Utility ver 6.1. Can't see printers or external hard drives. I could in earlier version. What gives?

With Airport Utility ver 6.1 can't see printers or hard drives. Dont' even see where to go for those screens. Was much easier in earlier versions. Question: How do I setup ext hard drives and printers in ver 6.1?

You don't need to "see" the printer for it to operate correctly using AirPort Utilty 6.1. If the printer was previously installed, it should continue to operate correctly. If you have a new printer, just install the device according to the manufacturers's instructions.
As far as being able to "see" a disk in AirPort Utility 6.1. Try the following:
Open AirPort Utility, click on the AirPort device, then click Edit in the next box that appears.
Click the Disks tab at the top of the setup window.

  • Update 12.1.1.4 erased all my files (music, videos, playlists, everything). How do I revert to earlier version to get that back?

I opened iTunes tonight to import a CD and it asked me to update. Sure, fine, go ahead. Computer restarts after update and EVERYTHING is gone. I had 20+ videos, over 3k songs, all sorted into playlists, podcasts... it's all gone. How do I get that back? Can I uninstall the update and go back to the earlier version of iTunes? And when I plug in my iPad to sync, will it wipe everything off of there, as well??? I'm a fitness instructor, I have over a year's worth of playlists and routines that are now gone.

You're welcome .  Note, though, that iTunes doesn't really keep "backup files" - it does replicate the library database (iTunes Library.itl) during the installation of an update if (and only if) that update makes a change to the database structure.  The most recent of these was the transition from iTunes 11.4 to iTunes 12.0.  On the basis that:
Computers tend to fail at the least convenient moment
Hard drives fail. Always. You just don't know when its going to happen
There is no process that can be 100% guaranteed not to mess with your data
creating and maintaining a backup of your iTunes library is just about essential. See tt2's notes on Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy for details of a suitable method.  If you make frequent additions or changes to your library you should refresh the backup every couple of days - at a minimum I'd suggest once a week - and always make sure that the backup is up to date before installing a new version of iTunes.  I actually use two backup strategies - one that runs automatically at 3am every Sunday morning, plus as-needed updates to a second external drive that I use to refresh two other systems that I run iTunes on.

  • DNG Files with Legacy Versions of ACR

In our office, we have 16 staff members currently running Photoshop CS. Although these terminals have the newest version of ACR available for CS, which supports DNG files, I ran into a DNG that I was unable to open today. I converted a Raw file from a Fuji S5 Pro using DNG Converter v 4.3.1 without a problem. However when I tried to open it with Photoshop CS, it did not open ACR. Instead I got a "not the right kind of document" error.
I took the same DNG file to a remote terminal that has Photoshop CS3 installed (with updated ACR as of a couple of weeks ago) and had no problem launching the ACR program and opening the file.
We are in the process of replacing all of our terminals at the staff member desks. But this may not happen until the 2nd half of 2008. At that time we will be upgrading all of the terminals to Photoshop CS3. My hope was that the DNG support for the version of ACR we had would be a bandage for working with these files until we were able to complete the upgrade. We can install the software that came with the cameras, but for the sake of consistency in how we file and archive files, since we'll be using DNG in the future it would be nice to now also. I've been able to work with other 'new' Raw files in this manner, but for some reason not the DNG converted from the S5 Pro Raw.
My assumption was that DNG was the same regardless of the initial Raw file type. Is there something I'm overlooking, or are newer DNG files not able to be converted with this legacy version of Photoshop and ACR?

It depends on how you define a raw format. As far as the Camera Raw adjustment controls are concerned, you cannot tell the difference between a linear dng and "raw data" dng, since all the current Camera Raw adjustment controls happen after demosaic step.
(Both Canon and Kodak have cameras that produce demosaiced "raw" file formats in some cases. In Canon's case, the new "sRAW" format is already demosaiced. Some Kodak cameras (e.g. Kodak 14n, etc.) also saved a "lower resolution" raw format that was also demosaiced.)
The dividing line between a "raw" format and a "rendered" format is with whether the data stored in the file is scene referred or output referred. As long as the data is in a scene referred color space, it is easy to change the white balance, exposure, tone curve, etc. Once the data is converted to an output referred color space, it gets much harder to change those parameters without causing artifacts.
That said, it is better to keep the image in mosaic format if possible, since this allows you to take advantage of better demosaic algorithms in the future. For this user, that is not possible because Camera Raw 2.4 does not have a demosaic algorithms that works for the Fuji S5, so using the linear form of dng solves that problem.

  • Error message when opening CS6 files in earlier versions

    PSCS6 with 12.0.4 update.  Mac OSX 10.8.2   16GB 1333 Mhz DDR3  543 GB Available
I've recently become aware that other people are getting an error message when opening many of my my psd files if they are on earlier versions of PS and also on PSE, (including the latest version).  The message is:
This document contains unknown data which will be discarded to keep layers editable.  To preserve the original appearance instead, choose flatten to load composite data as a flattened image.
Three options follow:  Flatten  Cancel  Keep Layers
When 'keep layers' is selected the file opens as normal.  However, people with much earlier version (CS version 8) don't get the option to keep layers, and the layers are flattened when the document is opened.
I still have CS5 on my mac, and I find that if I take my finished file into CS5 and save it there, the customer does not get the message above, and the file behaves as it should.  Those on very early version of PS can also open the files without any issues.
I've been using CS6 since it was released and have had to delve through all my files and save them in CS5.  Not every file is affected and I've been unable to find a common thread.
Hoping someone can throw some light on this.

This similar to the message one should get in an older version of photoshop such as photoshop 7.
If one presses ok instead of read composite that might preserve the layers with the original look.
But sometimes if a layer blending mode or some other feature is used an earlier versions of photoshop doesn't have, reading the composite is the only way to preserve the look of the image.
You said your using shape layers?
If they are shape layers you didn't use a stroke from the tool options bar?
Can you post an example of the image with the layers panel visible that you get that message with?
I guess your using photoshop cs6 with the 13.01 update?
